I think the leaked Tech/Civics trees have a lot to discuss.

For example, you can apparently use casus belli in wars now and you can have actual alliances (as opposed to friendship or defensive pacts) with other civs.

im liking how they at least fleshed out the diplomacy a bit. now it even makes sense for the player to denounce others, so they dont take such a crazy warmonger penalty. also nice that early game warmonger penalties dont really matter later on.

I may be biased because I only played one but go with Distant Worlds. Only thing that is missing is ground combat micro but even then there's enough factors to keep it interesting.

meh. lack of unit variety makes it too much of a hero rpg for me to really enjoy. the city building is pretty nice, however.
>>
>>150979994
It's pretty much CiV but better in all the essentials.

And if you're a challengefag you're in for a treat.
>>
>>150979994
What bothers me is how specialized the factions are. For example, the basic broken lords unit (the stalwards, I thin) only get one-handed or two-handed swords. No spearmen, no archers.

So you're going to say "of course, you're supposed to assimilate neutrals to use as auxiliaries, you double hollow".
To which I say "yeah, well, your face looks wrong, you piece of shit."
>>
>>150980259
>What bothers me is how specialized the factions are.
>Specialized factions aren't better than CiV's reskinned nation that gets a different ability and MAYBE a new aestethic every repackage
>>
>>150979994
as >>150980259 points out, you need to learn to assimilate minor factions to expand the variety in your armies. There's also the matter of the Colossus things
>>
Holy christ, how am I suppose to even find a mod in the archive, none of them are even properly named.

>>
>>150980597
Colossus what now?

>>150980506
What I expected was something like Total War, where every faction has pikemen/swordsmen/archer, and only elite units are really unique.
I just have a really soft spot for lines of pikemen holding the line while archers are shooting over their heads.
>>
>>150979865
Played it to death before the Forgotten pack was released, a little burned out on it.
>>
>>150980865
Well, Endless Legend is supposted to be really High Fantasy ("High" as in intoxicated, not noble), especially as later on in the game everything gets really magic-punky to the point you have a medieval UN and magical fridges. There's no place in it for something as gritty as pike and shot.
>>
>>150980865

the Guardians
learn what different minor factions offer and how their units work and you will have significantly more effective armies because you can actually set up what you described
>>
>>150981083
Frankly, if I knew how bad the combat was and that pike and shot wasn't possible, I wouldn't have bothered getting it.
The town building system is fun, but the rest is annoying, and that problem with the AI constantly being behind me despite me having huge advantages really pisses me off.

They should reuse ideas from RPGs and RTS to be honest. To my knowledge, Endless Legend is the only game where you can have a paper/scissor/stone system by giving anti-infantry weapons to your units. Civ6 could benefit from having a similar system.
>>
>>150983459
Hell they had something like that with SMAC. Sure most of your units ended up being glass cannons but mixed with a rock paper scissors system like you said it could work out pretty well.
>choose between type with infantry/horse
>weapons spear/bow/sword
>couple of optional slots to have unit come with certain promotions baked in at much increased production cost as well as a few unique upgrades not obtainable otherwise
Imagine being able to make spearmen with a caltrops upgrade preventing horse units from moving at full speed away from them.

Although that would probably result in an early game meta of horse archers until gunpowder just like in real life
>>
>>150985169
>Imagine being able to make spearmen with a caltrops upgrade preventing horse units from moving at full speed away from them.
My hips are moving on their own.

What would be fun would be if you could have some synergies between the units.
For example (and I'm pulling that idea from Dark Souls), let's say you give torture tools to an infantry unit. Not weapons, but torture tools.
They cause less damage, but cause wounds and demoralize enemy units, who then would be more vulnerable to your fighting units.
>>
>>150985480
Added bonus, you could get some super upgrades like nerve gas for huge anti infantry bonuses or salt the earth as a super pillage that completely rapes a tile into an unusable state. Except they carry huge diplomatic penalties and overuse using them at all will likely have the entire world after you.
>>
>>150985986
Dunno about the salt the earth part, but I'd really like more synergy.
Especially in Civilization, since the 1 unit per tile system make placement so important, you would think units would get better bonuses if they're supported or flanked by friendlies, but no, the fight is extremely basic and relies more on the terrain.
>>
>>150986197
I was just spitballing random shit. It'd certainly be nice to have options though with the more extreme ones being more polarizing with a huge benefit and equally large downside whether in production costs or diplomacy or a huge glaring weakness that can be easily exploited.
>>
>>150986512
Well, Stellaris has upgrades like that. For example, you can build drones to upgrade your armies' attacks.
But they're just bonus, they don't unlock skills or anything of the sort.
>>
Should I bother upgrading my transport ships?
How about science and construction? I don't imagine sensor range does anything for them but the auto-complete gives it to them.
>>
>>150987113
What game?

I don't think Stellaris has transport ships, and Civ5 doesn't have sensors, so are you talking about Distant Worlds?
>>
>>150987440
Stellaris.
The transport ships for when you embark armies.
Just like the science and construction ships they only have a fission reactor and piss poor defenses.
I was wondering if it's worth it to make them more expensive but upgrade their speed and all that.
>>
>>150988576
Maybe their speed, yeah. Upgrading their defense probably isn't worth it.

Never noticed transports ships to be honest famalam.
>>
>>150988576
It's worth upgrading them all. Transport shops is no contest because they cost zero: the best design in your Ship Designer spawns for free when armies lose planets. As for construction and science ships, the convenience of having them move about substantially faster (and therefore finish your mining stations / be able to get back to Assisting Research) more than makes up for the cost.

As I get a bit bigger and start seeing more options for increased number of leaders I will start running around with 3 or 4 science ships since it can take a very long time to get a science ship across the empire to scan debris or survey a star system. But, that's usually not until at least 70 to 100 years in.

So I have been playing Civ V for 30+ hours (in anticipation for Civ VI) and I know the basic concepts, but some advanced stuff still escapes my control.
Is there a comfy video guide for concepts like great persons, faith and religion, diplomacy, trading, caravans, etc.
I watched Quill18's videos of basic stuff and I understood yhr basics, but he doesn't have more tutorials.
>>
>>150992176
there's a mod called exterminatus that does
>>
>>150992771
What do you mean? How things like great people and stuff work? Or how best to use them and specialists and stuff?
>>
>>150993348
Things like that.
What are specialists? How are great people exactly generated? How useful are they? Should I concentrate in them?
I have this kind of questions in almost every "advanced aspect of Civ V. I know abou the Carls guide, but I'm looking for someone that shows what he explains.
>>
>>150992771
If you're doing this in anticipation for ciVI then those things are changing a lot and it's not really worth it.

Personally I've learned a lot about ciV from watching streamers like BabaYetu and Filthyrobot, but they focus on multiplayer and not on how to deal with the AI. Might be better to watch someone like Marbozir.
>>
>>150992771
Just watch an actual playthrough then.
Also it's usually fine to leave your cities on auto-pilot except in the beginning where you're trying to squeeze things out.
They'll focus on the great people for you.

Filthyrobot has some great guides on youtube that really helped smarten my game up. Like >>150995115 says he's mostly multiplayer but a lot of the concepts like why certain beliefs are good etc transfer over so they're still excellent for single player understanding.

Here's his religion video. It's long as fuck though over an hour but he covers literally every belief in the game in it with in depth reasoning on why certain ones are OP as shit and others are garbage you want to avoid with a 10ft pole. His other videos are equally long but equally in depth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R42Xtr2Vfww

One thing I don't recall hearing in his videos is how important internal trade routes are. An internal land route early on with a granary up is 6 food which is a farm on floodplains wheat out of nowhere which is pretty insane growth to give to a city. And more population=more science which is ridiculously important.
>>
>>150992771
>>150993693
Brace you'reself.

>What are specialists?
Certain buildings like the market or workshop or university or the 3 guilds come with specialist slots. If you put a citizen in the slot instead of having them work a tile in your empire they will generate points towards your great people and earn a yield associated with the great person (scientist specialists yield science, merchant specialists yield gold). Eventually a great person will be born, what you do with that great person is up to you.
>Great Prophets
You can found a religion or enhance one, spread your religion, or create a holy site on the tile they are on. You probably want to found a religion and then enhance with your first 2. After that it's up to you. If you have full piety then I would recommend creating holy sites with your prophets, otherwise spread the religion.
>Great Scientists
You should prioritize getting these if you can. They are useful all of the time. They can either create an academy or generate science equal to the last 8 turns. In the early game you want to plant academies, after that you want to bulb them for science.
>Great Engineers
These are slightly less important that scientists, but are still important. They can either hurry production in a city, or create a manufactory. You usually want to just hurry production for a wonder, but sometimes you want to plant the manufactory. The production is based off of your city population, so a 3 pop city won't be able to one-turn a late game wonder. If you get one early then you should plant it unless you have a powerful early or midgame wonder in mind.
>Great Merchant
These generally aren't that useful. If you do get one you should probably plant the customs house, but if there's a city state that has some luxuries that you need for other city state quests or a king's day in your capital then you should do the trade mission with that city state if it will get you to ally status, or you just need short term gold.
>>
>>150998442
>Great Artists
Can start a golden age or make a great work of art. Unless you want to do a culture victory then you should just do golden ages whenever possible. If you get a great artist before renaissance/industrial era try to save it until you get there since the production boost during that time when you have a ton of stuff to build is really good.
>Great Writers
Can generate culture or make a great work of writing. Again, unless you want to do a culture victory, just generate culture. The culture is equal to the last 8 turns worth of culture, so doing them on the last turn of a golden age is really good, also consider saving them until you get to ideologies so you can get the first 3 or 4 tenants.
>Great Musicians
Doodoo, avoid generating these unless you want to win a culture victory. They can only create great works of music or perform concerts in other people's territory which makes a lot of tourism for everyone.
>Great Generals and Admirals
These aren't made by specialists, they are earned through combat. They give a 15% combat bonus to units within 2 tiles of them, and generals can be planted to create a citadel which steals adjacent tiles and makes them part of your empire. Admirals can be bulbed to repair boats around it, kind of useless.
>>
>>150998540
>Tips for planting great people
You should plant them on tiles that you are already working, duplicate luxuries or strategic or bonus resources. If you plant them on a strategic resource you gain that strategic resource. Avoid planting them on fresh water tiles (tiles adjacent to rivers or lakes) since you generally want to make those into farms, and if you are planting them on a quarry resource, make sure you've already built the stone works in that city if you can.
If you've made a lot of great people and are running out of tiles to plant you should prioritize grassland>plains>hills>fresh water stuff in that order.
>>
>>150998668
>Religion
You generate faith to get a pantheon, then a great prophet to found a religion. After that you can either get another great prophet, or missionaries and inquisitors or faith buildings or great people depending on your policies.
You should try to build a shrine in the very early game to at least get a pantheon, even if you don't plan on getting a religion. The pantheons can be broken down into 2 groups, faith generating and non-faith generating. If you get a faith generating pantheon you are probably looking to get a religon, while the non-faith generating pantheons will give you an early game boost while being as likely to get you a religion (unless you are ethiopia or the celts or maya). If you see a really good faith generating one like desert folklore or earth mother you should take that, otherwise go for one of the other ones. The tundra pantheon is terrible, don't get it. When in doubt, take God-King.
When you get a religion you usually want to take one of the 3 gold generating founder beliefs since they are much better than the other ones. Tithe > church property > initiation rites. After that you usually want a building to spend your faith on. Pagodas are the clear best building, followed by mosques. Cathedrals are really mediocre and monasteries are terrible unless you combo it with the wine and incense pantheon and have a lot of the stuff. Other good beliefs are the religious community one, or feed the world, or any of the other happiness ones.
>>
>>150998787
>Diplomacy and Trading
Just don't do it. The AI is finickity and retarded. In the early game you can usually trade one of your duplicate luxuries for one of theirs. Try and trade embassies too, and when they start harassing you for open borders just accept it since they will keep harassing you, there's no drawback since they usually don't ever come into your land and they'll stop harassing you about it. Whenever you do something that upsets them say "We're sorry this has caused a divide between us." then ignore them and keep doing whatever you were doing. Eventually you will get to a point where the overvalue their luxuries and won't trade evenly with you so just ignore them at that point. Some AIs are massive cunts. Augustus and Alexander will settle every tile on the map eventually. Askia, Attila and Shaquille O'Neal will attack you every 20 turns. Genghis Khan will conquer that city state you were allies with. Dido will make a public declaration of friendship with you, then denounce you the next turn. Just ignore them whenever possible and do your own thing.
>>
>>150998908
>Caravans
Most of the time you want to just do internal trade routes. Feeding your capital or maybe some other underfed shithole corner of your empire. Try to get them as soon as possible without sabotaging your overall building goals.
You need a granary to send food trade routes and a workshop to send hammer trade routes. For the first 3/4 of the game you are sending food ones, for the last 1/4 you are sending hammer ones. If you are desperate for gold, or there is a trade route quest from a city state, you should trade with the city state once, or until your gold has stabilized. Cargo ships are better than Caravans in every way and you should build them over caravans if you can. Watch out for large patches of fog of war where barbarians could spawn and plunder your shit. It's annoying.

>General tips
Try to settle your cities on hills wherever possible, it gives one bonus hammer. Rivers are also really good. Another good thing to remember is that you can settle cities on resources, especially luxuries. The AI and the suggester thing that's in the game thinks this is a cardinal sin and will never do it, but it's often beneficial to do so, just avoid food bonus luxuries like deer or sheep or wheat if you can, since they don't contribute their yield to the city, while stone or luxuries or strategic resources do.
A general idea for settling a city is "will this city pay for itself before the game has ended?" if it will then settle it, if it won't then don't.
Get your national college as soon as you can, usually in your capital. It's really, really good. Get workshops as soon as you can, too. They are also really good. Other than that you should try to prioritise science buildings whenever you can.
More food is more citizens which is more science which is more everything.

Have fun.

Why are huge maps in Civ5 so fucking terrible? It seems like they spread the luxuries extremely thin, to the point where I get maybe one other decent city location near my capital and everything else is just empty space with food nodes like camps or bananas and nothing else. Even if there are some nearby, chances are they spawned a city state on it. It makes expanding a pain in the dick. I have to either play the city state game or hope there's some neighbors to conquer nearby with an early war, which on a huge map isn't very likely. I want to clear the achievement for all map sizes but goddamn this is hell.

Meanwhile, the Frank unit speak olde French.

What the gell does "montjoie" even means anyway?
>>
>>151030738
First of all, you should scout the Krush. If you see opponent have a stable and dig a lot of gold in Feudal (and Scout Rush isn't happening) then he will likely Krush, especially if you're against Franks (it's pretty much their only option) or Persia or any good cavalry civ.

Then you have 2 options, either go for a couple of Spearmen or wall up. Don't go Pikemen, those resources aren't worth it, unless the guy is stupid enough to continue the knight spam. If he does then he lost because iirc a Knight is sth like 60f 75g and 2 spears that can wreck a knight are dead cheap and don't cost gold.
That's why Byzantines are a good noob civ, they're very defensive and have cheaper counter units.
Speaking of counter units, if you can you can also buy a couple Camels, they're anti-Knight. But do it only if the opponent is going hard into knights.

Franks rarely have anything but Knight + Skirmisher / Archer as rushing options though. Chinese pikes are cheap as fuck to research to and you'll be using them later anyway

>>
>>151037692
let's not assume we're facing shit like Franks every time.
Franks are bottom tier because of how forced they are into going for Knights. Can't say about African Kingdoms though, because it shook things a little.
When facing a more flexible civ you generally shouldn't be easily baited to invest many resources into sth like Pikes early, and Chinese should go hard for archers or straight for CKN anyway, unless you're doing Knights yourself which is good as Chinese up until late Imperial when you're missing Paladins.
>>
>>151037840
I will get back to AoE2:WWK in a bit, I think. Ethiopians are very good Archer rush civ, at least on paper. I remember some easy wins with them before I quit playing AoE last year.
>>
>>151037840
they dont really suck considering they do 15 bonus damage to them. you have to mass them out but theres no other viable counter to knights outside of knights of your own, and its easy as hell to mass out spears. especially since you should always make a couple in the feudal age to stave off a possible scout rush.

When you're doing 3v3 or 4v4 BF it's just a lottery. I know I can do the boom in the fastest time in 90% of games because most of the players can't be bothered to autistically reproduce TaToH video, and I can be. So depending on the average boom time of my team I either win or loose, because 1 player isn't enough to slay all the others.

Wasn't China typically infested by retarded bureaucracy alongside small scale internal conflict and corruption.
If that isn't the case then I'm not sure what justification there can be for China never really projecting power outside of its borders consistently.

Goths should beat absolutely everyone else 1v1 given enough resources to fuel their endless spam. The only thing that really topples them on boom maps are factions with really hardcore power upon critical mass, like Turkish Janissaries and shit.
>>
I have the problem with CiV and Stellaris that tech goes too fast . In CiV there's the game speed modifier, but that also modifies the speed of all the building. It would be nice if you could modify just the tech speed. Likewise, in Stellaris you'll have pretty much all the needed techs in a century, at which point the game is far from over though.
>>
>>151038536
goths are honestly one of the more broken civs if you dont take account of their lack of defense
they barely have any melee armor but the fact that you can just churn out any unit you need from the barracks with their insane 2x bonus+20% team bonus, as well as huskarls having fucking 10 pierce armor by default, means that castles mean literally nothing to them, as well as their pretty fast movespeed
its great
>>
>>151038785
It doesn't require so much thought, dexterity or knowledge of the game and counters as open maps. Of course it's popular.

"There is no expedient to which a man will not go to avoid the labor of thinking."

For me you can either play AoE2 and have some excitement or just wait for you 100 fully upgraded paladins and clash it with other 100 paladins until one of the sides flinches and looses.
>>
>>151038625
No but seriously,
Japan was basically strictly inferior to chinks during the time period covered. The only reason the Chinese didn't absolutely fucking dominate them, even when the nips had Euroguns, was because they were out of money to pay their troops and bureaucratic shit got in the way.
This ain't even wank or anything.

>>151038834

>The defensive tower just eats archers

I think I know where you're coming from, but I just think of AoE2 as a game of instant counters and calculating resources. A defensive tower - to me - means that I should cease attacking (at least in the protected area, ESPECIALLY with Archers) and try to be faster to Castle age and make use of the fact that you spent 125 stone and I didn't and build additional Town Centers before you, have more Villagers than you and snowball off that.

If I wanted to keep harassing you in protected area I'd consider switching to Skirms. Or would send villagers to another resource area of yours and build an offensive tower (so now we're on equal footing with regards to Stone but I have an edge because I'm denying you something).

But of course it's all very circumstancial, and I'm not an active player now so I won't be stubborn about it if it works for you
>>
>>151039573
It's definitely a gamble but players are surprising negligent in scouting. Also, rushes are usually like, say, 4 knights or 6 archers or something. That's a LOT of gold.

>I'd rather be casul than think
Wait are you just spouting memes? Opinion discarded.
>>
>>151039573
Not him but I think the way it works is that a defensive tower frees him up to not make archers for the defended zone. Feudal towns are tiny, one tower can cover like half the town. If you actually made any archers you just essentially wasted those resources, and offensive towers if detected are easily thwarted. Towers don't get murder holes until a few minutes into castle at earliest, you could even send a lone pikeman to tear it down.

>>151040087

>>
>>151039918
You don't make defensive archers, you defend with Skirmishers and pikes.

And you shouldn't make anything 'just in case', especially not a tower. That just means you are not scouting yourself.

On standard resources you have 200 stone, enough to build 2 town centers in castle age without mining any. If you build a tower which the opponent can just ignore you just force yourself into mining stone that would be better spent for Town Centers which protect and expand your lands better than a single tower, not to mention that in AoE2 the player who has better villager production generally wins.

Original guy here
1. On larger maps scouting is more difficult for both sides. I tend to play on maps bigger than the recommended sizes if possible
2. My usual rhythm has me mining stone at 18 or so anyway
3. That guy's wrong - I make the tower to defend my lumber camp and make no defensive units full stop besides a few pikes, if that. If I've scouted my enemy before this I don't make the pikes unless I see a stable / signs of some form of non-archer rush. If I see a boom I just don't use the tower.
4. A defensive tower lets me rush without heeding defense as much. At the very least, I'll get way advance warning.
Anyway, I don't do it every match.

It is still beyond me how completely retarded the German establishment is about this, and I AM a German.
First, this is fucking history, three or more generations removed. Yes, terrible crimes were commited. By Germans. And by pretty much everyone else.
Second. Why the fuck is it OK to show swastikas and Hitler in hollywood movies that run in cinemas for everyone above the age of twelve, but if I see that in a computer game it's suddenly dangerous, must be censored and is only for people above 18?

This rating and censorship system is completely out of touch with reality, and I can absolutely guarnatee you that they've lost any and all credibility with the actual German people.

To put it in simple term, there's a difference between simple bleeding and a haemorrhage (or a medical bleeding).
In the first case, your immune system will fix it. The blood will coagulate and close the wound. In the second, unless you get medical assistance, you'll die, as the wound will be too large for the coagulation to close it.
Wavy weapons like that are designed to cause open wounds bleeding profusely, as opposed to normal weapons that are just here to kill. Weapons like that are pretty rare, because in a real fight, you usually want to kill the enemy quickly, so either they are dueling weapons, or ceremonial weapons.
And while these weapons are probably ceremonial as you believe, they're still pretty kickass and it would be nice to have pikemen using these.

>>151043530
Because games are for kids.
>>
>>151042630
Only the leftmost, rightmost, and the dagger-axe saw wide-scale deployment. The Guandao is a cavalryman's weapon while the other two are mainly ceremonial.
>>
>>151043775
As for simple geometry, the wavy blade simply makes your weapon wider while being more economic with weight and flexibility. A blade as wide as the waved pattern stretches out would do almost the same sort of damage. Flesh being expansive wouldn't really interact with the cutting instrument more than a normal wide blade either.

I like the centre glaive the most. best form/fuction combination.
>>
>>151044148
>A blade as wide as the waved pattern stretches out would do almost the same sort of damage.
Not him but that's not true
The wavy blade acts as a saw when swung and basically cracks the flesh apart. When stabbed both are lethal and difficult to treat, but when swung the wavy blade is significantly more nasty than a straight blade of the same weight.

Endless Legend is fun, but the game feels too slow to me. By the time I get toward the end-game on a map, I've got all this research, but I feel like I haven't accomplished much. Cities are kind of small, armies aren't that big.

>What about §86a StGB?
This is a question of context.

I can, for example, buy a history book with Himmler in full SS uniform giving the nazi salute (as part of a collage, together with the usual tanks, bombs, etc etc.) on the front.

This video game is not propaganda material, it is not meant to spread or disseminate parts of nazi (or, for that matter, fascist, communist, or whatever other) ideology.

>IIRC some stupid law or video games not being counted as art
Nope. Video games were expressly recognized as being protected in the same way that art, movies or literature is (including , ironically, the source code, which is one FUCKHUGE can of worms that I hope to never have to worry about)

The BPjM is literally fucked as soon as anyone goes to court about their de-facto censorship (even though it is indirect, their way of influencing what gets shown and what does not is censorship, and as such unlawful), and they're double fucked when it comes out that the people making the decisions on what to ban are essentially an old boys club that often doesn't even look at the material directly.
The real problem is that this would require a lot of money.

Of course, that will not ever make it into the mass media. Though it'd be pure fun to watch what happens if Spiegel or Süddeutsche decide to drop the bomb and publish how corrupt tht whole process has been for the past twenty+ years.
>>
>>151051525
To add, the relevant law is §86 Abs 3 StGB.

If that is applicable to movies and TV shows, it's equally applicable to video games.

It's less broken than the release version was.

It's more a case of things they did not fix than things they actually broke.

Diplomacy, war goals and sectors ar the three worst offenders right now, closely followed by weapons balance.

The overall problem of 'nothing to do in midgame' and 'lategame is stale as fuck' still apply.
>>
>>151058603
Weapon balance can be fixed with mods.
>>
>>151058909
A game shouldn't need mod to be fun. Mods are just a bonus.
>>
>>151059035
It's not that it's not fun.

It's just that Tachyon Lances are better than everything, and roughly two-thirds of the available weapon choices are uselss by design.
>>
Do any of these games actually have a good strategic warfare system? Like something that maybe allows resources in the area to synergize with the buildings? I know this is kinda vague but bear with me. Like, say an area has a lot of ore or something, what would be cool is if that ore surplus gave a bonus to manufacturing, like a 25% speed bonus to manufacturing or whatever, and then the AI would read that and utilize it, and be more inclined to defend it. It would also allow for the player to have a strategic objective to go after, like taking a certain city with that bonus will cripple AI manufacturing, at least in that area, and neutralize the threat significantly. Obviously we as players already do that kind of stuff, It'd be awesome to see the AI do it.
Is this something that exists? Would people even want to see it? Should I kill myself because the autism is too strong?

Is Kinetic Artillery really that much worse?
Also, is it just me or a must rare weapons like mining lasers and shard throwers just flat-out useless?
>>
>>151062498
>less accurate
>No armor piercing/extra shield damage/special property of any kind
The only thing it's got going for it is a faster rate of fire, but against Talcyon's 90% accuracy and 75% armor penetration-not to mention higher base damage in the first place- and Kinetic Artillery just doesn't hold up.
>>
>>151063081
Kinetic Artillery uses less energy so in theory that means you can either slap more per ship or have more ships because you kinda safe money on reactors.
There has to be one edge to kinetic weapons, right?
>>
>>151063424
It seems like the game was designed to have sort of a weapon triangle between kinetic, laser, and missile weapons, but they fucked it up.

Energy weapons deal less damage to shields, but heavy damage to hulls.

Kinetic weapons deal less hull damage, but they're effective against shields.

Missiles deal very heavy damage to hulls, but can be shot down.

In practice, they didn't balance it properly, though.
>>
>>151062498
>are weapons like mining lasers and shard throwers just flat-out useless?
Most of them are, yes.

Ultimately, the only weapon other than lances that are worth having are disruptors for the medium slots, PD for small slots and a bunch of fighters and bombers just in case.

Bombers REALLY fuck shit up if they get through, and fighters appear to be really good at shooting down torps and missiles.
>>
>>151063939
No they didn't, because missiles are literally the best until torpedoes which are best until Talcyon

>>
>>151063940
>Bombers REALLY fuck shit up if they get through, and fighters appear to be really good at shooting down torps and missiles.
Yeah, bombers are insane. I play with a mod that adds carriers as ships and my light carrier stuffed full of basic bombers had around 1.5k power rating before I could build cruisers. They were even stronger than my first battleships.
My mid-game fleets consisted mostly of carriers with bombers and fighters with destroyers as meathshields and they shat on absolutly everything. It's even sillier because Light Carriers are about as durable as escorts, which are between destroyers and cruisers.
>>
>>151064731
>Tyranids
isn't that an end-game crisis?
>>
>>151064846
Just wait until you get Carriers and Dreadnoughts.
>>
Does anyone else feel like Stellaris just isn't very strategic?

I have loads of fun playing it, but I feel like the optimal strategy (and the one often employed by the AI as well) is to just lump all your ships into one giant fleet and steam-roll everything.

The fact that the AI does it as well only makes it worse, since splitting up your fleet puts you at a distinct disadvantage. Plus, attacking planets isn't all that useful.
>>
>>151064924
I think so, I'm at 200~ or so years from game start, and I was doing good, bullying my neighbors for territory. Now I am seeing a swarm of 50k fleets destroying me, because my total fleets is MAYBE 50k and I was doing well, so I thought it was enough
>>
>>151065715
Yeah, the end-game events are REALLY rough. They're supposed to be difficult to beat. You're supposed to just barely survive them.
>>
>>151065649
It's just annoying that military units play like a RTS, with you always having units ready.
I prefer CKII's system when you only raise armies when you need them.
>>
>>151065858
Eh, I mean that makes sense to me. A fleet of ships isn't like an army, where you can just recruit some dudes and give them some weapons. They're significant physical investment.

Although, that reminds me that another thing I'm not too fond of about Stellaris is the way wars play out. Ships take so long to build that if you don't have the upper hand at the start of the war, it doesn't seem like there's any way to *get* it. The lack of real strategic choices means that fleet power, more often than not, decides the winner, and you can't built an appreciable number of ships during the span of a war.

Maybe I'm just playing wrong. Or maybe I just need some AI mods or something.
>>
>>151065781
I am reading the crisis, so... only one of them can happen in a game, right? I'll do a new game tomorrow and see what happens, since I got the basics covered in this one
>>
>>151066137
I dunno, you could justify it by mobilizing private ships or contracting mercenaries.
Having a fleet constantly sitting on its ass doesn't please me, I always imagined them patrolling.
>>
>>151066240
Yeah, you'll only get one. Technologies you've researched, etc. will influence your chances of each event.

You probably shouldn't expect to beat them your first time, since obviously you spend a lot of the early game not knowing what you're doing.

This time, though, focus a bit more on military and you should be fine.

I see two options.

Northeast for cotton + wine, lots of desert for maximum Petra bonus, (possibly near the mountain to eventually get an observatory)

Or east near the river mouth, between the marble and truffles. This would allow you to use cargo ships for maximum gold gain from the city states

>from a game mechanics point of view, CivV with expansions is objectively better than Civ 4 with expansions

That's wrong though, the whole game is disunited and it really feels like too many things are just flat "happen" There's less choice other than 1UPT.

The biggest thing is science just being something that's produced by having more people, that's really dumb compared to the fact that you need to invest in science from the commerce that your cities generate. More people does mean more science, but more science also means that you are going to have less money than you could potentially have.

Also Civ 4 gave you more of an incentive to play wide while still being more punishing for doing it too fast than Civ 5 (rather than not at all) with city maintenance, and managed to get a better growth cap with both health and happiness, making food resources as important as they absolutely should be. Peoples in history with just slightly better grass or a sparse population of cows to eat didn't get as far as those that had corn and reliable rivers out the ass.

Also though religions giving bonuses are kind of cool, I still think Civ4 did it better by having the bonuses rely more on what your civics and policy were on religion (another thing better than social policies) while religion really had mostly city happiness/diplomatic effects.

Also tech trading and the nature of the tech tree + traits made every civ different and similar enough but also better encouraged keeping good relations as well as letting you go for a valuable tech so you can barter it around for the ones you may have missed out on.

Prepare for Ground Assault (makes armies and planetary invasions more interesting and varied)
Stellar Expansion (more techs to research, buildings to build, generally more options for development and research, including repeatable researches to increase trade attractiveness/willingness of aliens to enter agreements with you, as well as more ways to generate influence.)
Crystallis Ship Modules Expansion (adds more ship components, namely new crystal plating, more psionic stuff, more engine types(like slower engines that boost armor, or one that gives 250 shields instead of evasion), "crew" modules that take up a large slot and give interesting and varied options, ect. Makes research and shipbuilding more interesting for early and mid-game.)
TFW's Bunch of Ship Parts (Mid-Late game ship modules; makes ship builds in the Late-game more interesting by adding additional tiers to existing weapons, more weapon types, ect.)
More Technologies (I believe you can figure this one out yourself)
Civilian Trade (it's a little boost early on, can be interesting if you want to be a dick to the market, but overall an unobtrusive addition that just makes the universe feel a bit more active.)
More Events Mod (again, easy to figure out)
Beautiful Battles (standard fare, not really much reason NOT to run this mod.)

There's more that I personally like, and probably some you'll like hanging around somewhere, but I believe these are a solid foundation to build on.

Is there any benefit to going really wide in Civ V? I always enjoy blobbing myself across the map but it feels there is no reason to form any more cities after your first 3-5 ones.

The only benefit is making a grab for unclaimed luxuries/strategics, making a city and halting its growth after 1 citizen.
>>
>>151068902
>FTL
>realistic
>>
>>151115871
apart from unhappiness why would you ever halt growth? any reason?
>>
>>151116008

Happiness is the only reason, but I always have problems with it. Some cities are just not worth developing if they are placed in a shit location just to get you a luxury. Then they pay themselves off by +2 happiness if they aren't allowed to grow. A net gain for your empire.
>>
>>151115871
The natural tendency of newbs is to go tall. And honestly in unmodded CiV it is often a solid option, but going wide is more tennable at higher difficulties where wonders are off the table. It's proactive. You are putting your fate into your own hands instead of turtling and hoping no one turtles better than you.

Also going wide is a no-brainer when you have a shitty start. Newbs don't have to worry about that though since they usually restart until they get the perfect start.
>>
>>151116580

When I got this game, I would always go wide, and fucked myself in the process, every time because I would over-expand and pops would just keep growing and unhappiness spiraled out of control.

But I enjoy playing wide, like you always did in old civs. Spread that blob. It just seems unfeasible in Civ V. How do you do it?
>>
>>151115871
depends on the sizae of the map and how many civs you're playing but generally there is no downside to going wide if you can handle the unhappiness. Obviously will be behind in science compared to a tall player but if you dominate land you will eventually eclipse him in all other areas and could possibly overtake in science once a lot of your cities are up and running well.
>>

Always too much land to settle, and not enough happiness.

I guess I should stop playing on huge maps though, I feel they are a little too big, even if you add 4-5 more civs.

I learned how to go wide properly playing Mayan Infinite City Sprawl. The key is to not build buildings you don't absolutely need. Just go for happiness and gold buildings. MAYBE a shrine if you are doing the religious game. Food cap your cities to keep them from growing beyond three pop. Build workers, settlers, and archers with all that excess production.

ICS was nerfed in BNW since now cities increase science cost, but it's good practice for a more diversified wide game. If you can master the basics of ICS then you should have no problem going wide in the future.

So in CIV VI can you make your civ a commie or fascist civ? and can that spread around or am I really wrong in thinking that?

So those faggots are going to understand how to make the game not look like it's for ants in anything bigger than 1080 this time, right?

>>
>>151123774
Err, Civ 6, that is.
>>
>>151123197
they cant spread around, no. governments in civ 6 are the same as civ 4 in ways: they're yours alone, giving you bonuses depending on which one you pick up, and generally defining your playstyle. you can change them at will but it will cause anarchy in your empire for a few turns, and you also insert 'cards' into them that give you other bonuses to your empire. since other civs can pick up governments, of course, it'll be like civ 5 ideologies where civs will bitch at you if you're following a different government.
>>
>>151124742
That;s cool. I wish you could spread your gov. type and make other city states and civs almost like satellite states like the Russians did after WWII.

They have government types, and I think communism and fascism are on the list. Dunno about spreading it around, although you could do the equivalents in Civ V.

well it kinda spreads around, I think. I remember hearing something about how if your empire does really well with x government, people from other civs will start bitching to the leader about how they want x government. and I remember there being something about cities even converting over to other civs because of it. or maybe that was with another part of the game.

It's already the case on tablets.

The thing that makes me pessimist is how much the consoles are forcing themselves in your life. Back in the days, you put the game in, started the console, and played.
Now you have to start the console, put yourself on offline mode to avoid all your "friends" barging on, read the mandatory news and licenser term explaining how much of a faggot you are and how grateful you should be, and then you can finally select the game and play.
>>
I think some one asked here about playing with more civs than what a map was made for on online multiplayer. I want to know if you can because its really fun playing on a small map with a lot of civs.
>>

Ok, so I guess it's as fast as you can pull it off.
It's already paying out since I just won 2 back to back wars against my 2 continent neighbors and they're paying me a nice tribute for obliterating their military.
And now I know I'm well ahead of them since they likely spent the time to build all those troops and all I had to do was buy a few archers.

> 3 pop capital (for instance, I mean. My capital has 4 pop right now)?
Depends on the growth potential of your capital, if you can reach 4 population really fast do it at 4th, if it's going to take more than like 10 turns just start settlers at 3. The usual strategy for this is, assuming that you've already scouted all the places you want to settle and know in which order you're going to settle them and have the happiness for them, most people do settler-settler-a military unit or some infrastructure, which one's going to help most-settler

Answers to these kind of questions depend on shitload of things though, try to tailor these kind of things as your game goes, don't try the same written strategy every game
>>
>>151136243
Not really? Like, a Forge province gives insane boosts to armor or attack, losing your forge province means the enemy will now have better units than you full-stop.
>>
>>151136435
Harder difficulties means they'll have better units than you full stop, it doesn't change too much.
>>
>>151102793
Cheers,I`ll see if I can spot some of my own.
>>
>>151136516
Play multiplayer then. Harder difficulties on any game means that AI gets insane advantages unless they're like AoE2 where they're often just downright better than even 1750 ELO players.
>>
>>151136714
It's only really your more complex strategy games where they rely on AI handicaps.

I'm not complaining. My only proper input is that the unit upgrades in Shogun 2 don't matter all too much.

how do you counter someone who's obviously going for a diplomatic victory? He just founded the world congress and built the forbidden city, basically making sure he gets a majority until city states get invited (and he's good enough to take control over a few before that).
It's a three player multiplayer game btw
>>
>>151136402
Thanks.
Also Playing Dido was fun for the first 200 turns on epic.
All that free money and what-have-you.
Now I'm bored. Killing my neighbors would be too easy and I don't want to wait for another victory.
>>
>>151138103
Kill city states, city state AI is retarded that's really easy
He can have good votes for now, but he really needs city states for diplomatic victory, before he can get them without city states someone else can easily win otherwise
>>
>>151138103
Diplomatic victory is basically just economic victory. The other two human players would easily make enough money to be able to pay off enough city states away from them. If it was the clearest way anyone was going to win they would both attack him as well.
>>
>>151138103
take his capital and the forbidden city which will usually be in his capital
kill city states or be rich enough to buy favor before they have a chance to vote
win another way before world leader is possible.

I thought we were talking about ressources, like irons, incenses, or horses.
I understand you're talking about regional buildings, but these aren't ressources.
Or are they?
>>
>>151139090
They are
You can't build certain buildings in Shogun 2 unless you have the appropriate resource in that province.
>>
>>151139170
You're mixing regional buildings (like the arrow-maker, the blacksmith and whatever else) with ressources that can be exported and used to make buildings.

>>151136435 talks about buildings, but having stones doesn't make your unit less expensive, it only unlocks advanced buildings. It's having the stone quarry in your region that gives you discounts.

that was my initial strategy, the map is huge and places all players on an west-east axis with me to the east, one player that got a real shitty start and so far haven't got a real strategy in the middle and the diplo player to the west. I could easily conquer most city states close by before he even discovers them. The only problem is that I'm allied to most of them, but I suppose I'll have to sacrifice them.

>>151138587
yes probably, I'm doing alright money wise. about 50 GPT. I don't know how the other player is doing, but I don't think it's too good. Is going wide a viable strategy if you want gold? This thread sort of made me want to do that just to try it. The trick is to limit growth so cities only have about 3 pops, right?

>>151139005
as I wrote, he's on the other side of a map filled with rough terrain so I'll probably not be able to take his capital before I get frigates or battleships. Killing city states and going wide will probably be my strategy

>>
>>151140781
in civ, domination. It feels like that has to most player interaction and combat is a large part of the game.
science and diplomatic victory are tied for lowest. Science is pretty much "nobody won in another way so here's the default victory" and diplomatic is frustrating
>>
>>151141078
I personally don't like it. I don't like it one bit. The emphasis recently put on multiplayer penalizes me if I try to play alone (with games like Borderlands being extremely hard if you try to solo them), and I cannot stand playing with other people, as I'm kind of a very slow player, and most online players are GOTTA GO FAST FULL SANIC.

It's hardly a surprise that I got kicked very often when I tried playing MMOs. I just take my sweet time playing, and playing online isn't a fun experience for me.

Segregating by FTL is silly. I mean, first of all, why segregate by FTL? What sense does it make to single this one specifically? Second, it would be impossible to balance.

It would make so much more sense to give everyone access to all FTL. Maybe start with one, but later learn how outfit your ship with more modes. Like you start with warp that can take you anywhere, later learn how to get faster on hyperlanes, then learn how to build what is effectively roads in space. Makes sense?

Having start with one and force players to scavenge for other modes would make an interesting game, especially if hyperlane scheme was less clustered.

Why are defenses so shit in Stellaris? Why do defense platforms even exist when even 1k fleets melt them in 5 seconds? I can barely even use them for FTL snares because they die before I can even send my fleet over.
>>
>>151154830
Combat is horribly unbalanced in Stellaris altogether. One giant deathball fleet is the only viable tactic for everyone.

Also stations used to be substantially worse before 1.2 because their range used to be half what they are now.

>UA:
Building Light cavalry or their UU gives two units instead of one.
>Leader Ability (Tomyris):
All units receive a bonus against wounded units and heal a little after a kill.
>Agenda:
Hates surprise declarations of war
>UU, Saka Horse Archer:
Highly mobile and doesn't require horse resources to construct. (15 Combat Strength, 25 Ranged Strength, 1 Range, 4 Movement, Costs 100 production (technically 50 since you get two), becomes available during the Classical era)
>UI, Kurgan:
Gives faith and gold with a bonus for being built next to pastures. Can't be built on hills or next to each other. (Seems like it on it's own gives 1 faith, bonus yield might be 1 faith per surrounding pasture)

Cyrus II, King of Kings and King of Persia had managed to conquer most of the known world, his empire in charge of about 1/5 of the world population at that time. After ordering the rebuilding of the Temple of Solomon, conquering Babylon and liberating their people, and beginning to consolidate his realm (more effectively than any king before him), he had to deal with the eternal problem of the Persian kings, which were the Scythian tribes in the steppes to the north of their lands. He attempted negotiation and then battle with Tomyris, and that's where he was killed (though the Scythians did fuck off)

What's the most satisfying way to play Civ V in your onion?

>Difficulty
>Map type
>Random or pre-chosen civ
>Random victory condition or chose which victory condition to aim for

Personally I enjoy Emperor, and currently been playing random civs on Huge Fractals. I think Huge might be too big, especially for recommended civs, and more than that will slow the game to a crawl in endgame.

This shit doesn't sound good at all, how is this going to be balanced?
>>
>>151162976
lots of spearmen > pikemen

besides, balance is kind of a silly sacred cow of armchair game designers when it comes to games with multiple sort of class options on how to play (if civ were a roleplaying game, the leaders and civs would be classes)

what's more important (and what civ6 seems to be doing) is making sure that all of the classes are unique and interesting to play
>>
Do characters get XP by overseeing cities in Endless Legend or only when buildings are finished?
>>
>>151158006
Literally Huns of Civ VI. Because of this I guess we won't see Huns or Mongols in this game, Scythians will fill the role of nomadic horse archers
>>
>>151163294
adding on already

it sounds like they're really trying to repair the biggest problem of civ 5 where you had one strategy that applied throughout any game as anyone you played except venice, where you could always go tradition and rationalism, alway build four cities, no real wars till advanced siege weapons so on and so forth

what we see with scythia especially is a better version of the huns in a sense, where early war is very much encouraged with them so that you can fuck shit up until your rivals can fight back but then it would (hopefully) be too late and you already earned something of a victory
>>
>>151163294
>lots of spearmen > pikemen
Do spears even get an attack bonus against HA though? It seems sensible in fact for them to be weak to them because of how horse archers work - spearmen are strong against cav because they're good at defending assuming they aren't flanked and can't be broken by a cav charge and are good at taking cav out once tangled.
Horse archers just sit right out of range and never need to charge at all, completely negating the advantage of spearmen, their tight formation.
Fuck, personally I think spearmen / pikemen / maybe heavy infantry should take a huge penalty for being flanked. They're only useful when facing the enemy in formation, this would encourage spearmen to either be deployed specifically to fight off cavalry that broke through your frontline or have a wall of infantry / spearmen.

>balance is a silly sacred cow
I can't say I disagree, but I highly doubt everyone else agrees.

>>151163519

>literally who is leading France
>a Greek and one of the shittiest pharaohs is leading Egypt
>a woman, whose primal record is fucking Herodotus, is chosen as a leader for Scythia
>Brazil is an Empire but Portugal is a city state

I don't even have anything against having women leaders but why the fuck pick shitty and irrelevant ones? It's worse than civ 5 G&K, at least Theodora was de facto in control for some time and Dido KINDA existed, but they're really just scratching the bottom of the barrel here and for fucking what?
>>
>>151163806
I always thought it was against mounted units in general, right? Or was that in Civ4?

Horse archers have a range of 1 it seems which means even if they can attack without getting hurt, they still can be attacked very easily.

From what I can see it seems that an AI Tomyris would be very annoying possibly, if there's a system for demanding tributes like in the first two civs, I wouldn't be surprised if you find her on your borders early on asking for them. Which would create the interesting paradigm: Would you want to waste turns of production on fighting them off and refusing tribute, or forfeit gold and giving it to them.

>>
>>151164215
Isn't Dido a literally legend for Carthaginians? I'd say she's pretty important and putting her in the game was okay. Though the decision between her or Hannibal is arguable

They simply go for unused leaders this time, and you have to scratch the bottom of barrel to do this sometimes

>>Brazil is an Empire but Portugal is a city state
TSL balance, Europe is filled enough but without Brazil South America would be empty
>>
>>151163806
yes, spearmen get +10 strength against mounted units in general. scythia will have a very strong warmongery early game, (it should be easy to know when they will declare war on you because they're honorabur and will always denounce beforehand) so that should be the time when you get spearmen ready. however, their advantage will really taper off once you get into the medieval era. it only counts for light cavalry, after all, which means that it probably doesnt affect knights.
>>
>>151164316
Right except their bonuses synergize incredibly well.
They get two units for every one, but think about it - their first unit attacks without getting hurt and their second unit does presumably significant bonus damage against the wounded unit. Once they get attacked they can heal from picking off the wounded.

>>151164627
She's a Roman legend, but the Carthaginians actually do have a founding myth, with some historical basis (a few other legends of Phoenician colonies and Phoenicia itself mention a noble girl that got banished / ran away from marriage around the right time), of a founding Queen from Tyre.
>>
>>151163294
>>151163806
>balance is a silly sacred cow
Without some balance, whole Civs will end up as uninteresting shit.

Not challenging, but the 'see enemy Civ, look at era, steamroll or prepare your anus as appropriate' kind of boring.

It's bad enough that the AI will just blatantly cheat and spawn some bonus units whenever it wants, gets fuckhuge tech boosts, free happiness out the wazoo, etc.

If they then go on and just make some Civs ridiculously strong and others ridiculously weak on top of that, it'll simply kill all the fun.
>>
>>151165126
Try too hard to balance things, and you end up with the same civilization.
>>
>>151165190
I'm not proposing to go for perfect-to-the-third-decimal, indexed by time elapsed in seconds vs. clicks per minute kind of balance that Starcraft has.

It is a good idea to give unique buildings, units, districts, etc to all Civs.

But if you're not carefuly with this, it WILL snowball out of control and make certain civs stomp everything.
>>
>>151165126
Being overly concerned with balance removes all prospects of being different.
Yeah you can't just give the Mongols Mangudai with longbow tier range and combat strength and Parthian Shot as an ability letting them attack without using movement points, but you could probably give them Parthian shot alone.
>>
>>150965629

loll
>>
>>151164970
they also only get two units if theres an encampment district in the city. which means that they wont just be spamming them out of every nook and cranny. both districts and settlers cost a bit more with every one you build, so the 'two for one' deal wont be all over the place.
>>
>>151165820
It still sounds like one of those critical mass type of unit / ability combos. Sort of like the jannisarries or the Chu-ko-nu / Longbows in AoE.
>>
>>151165659

Meh I just got reminded of it
Also I didn't make the connection between Mecca getting hit by lightning and Ba'al being an actual god of storms.

Fuck yes. She's the best looking by far. That's not to say I don't like the others though.

The sole cleavage of the game so far doesn't hurt either.

Had to stop this playthrough not long after this point. It crashed three times at the same point. It was preceded by an increasing frequency of crashes which I was able to navigate around using previous saves. It's a major bummer because I was doing well and I was really enjoying playing Asia with all the slanty eyed civs.

I don't know what the issue is. I'm just playing with the CBP mods, RED Modpack, Ethnic Units, and JFD's Exploration mod.
>>
>>151180923
Watching some videos of her, I can see it now- the stills put her in some unflattering shadows. And the actual Egyptian is seriously cute/hot.
I'm warming up to this.
>>
>>151181865
Must be those seductive eyes she gives the player.

>>151181805
Oh, and JFD's Cultural Diversity.
