Whom will you play as first?

>Civ6 comes in 3 months
>tfw still haven't tried Civ5

First, I wanted to give Firaxis time to iron out the inevitable issues after release. Later, upon seeing the bunch of map pack and whatnot, I decided to wait for GOTY (as I usually do). Then it turned out it doesn't contain everything, plus there'll be an upcomic expansion.

Later, Gold Edition looked a must have but then I realised they still managed to leave Brave New World out of it. After all these hassle Complete Edition finally offered a total package, but by that time my interest (that wasn't that high to begin with) totally dried up.

If Firaxis going to play the same scenario (or worse) with the sixth episode, they won't see a dime from me (again). Unless it's going to be the most polished and advanced episode so far, which is really unlikely from what I'Ve seen so far.

>>151426765
Ah, Battle Realms. It was a breath of fresh air even back then, the unit combination part was innovative yet not overly complicated. It's a shame it never got a proper sequel or at least a spiritual successor.
>>
>>151430263
I heard there's a Lotus expansion in the work, but it's kinda ded right now.

We used to think that if you played on the internet, you could send your troops to be trained in your allies' barracks to get even more units.
>>
is it autistic to not care about civ VI at the slightest because of the artstyle?

no, it's perfectly reasonable to not like something because of the way it looks.

This is the second CBP game I've lost on Immortal. First Persia with Authority then Indonesia with Progress. Both times I used my early UU to conquer a neighboring civ only to be out teched, DOWd, and then bled dry by over 100 turns of war. And they NEVER want peace.

Next time I'll use a civ without an early UU. I'm typically pretty solid on Immortal but maybe early aggression just doesn't work well in CBP.
>>
>>151470113

It also makes them found their actual religions. Celts would found Druidism for example. I use complete edition of it, which adds really shitload of religions and also is compatible with many civ mods
>>
>>151493262
Sounds good. How is it implemented in-game? I mean, do they automatically get it at point or whenever they want to found one their option is limited to one? Also, does it restrict the player in a similar fashion (i.e. you can only found your nation's starting religion)?
>>
>>151493546
That mod is just flavour, doesn't change anything mechanic related. It's just if they found a religion, they found the religion they actually believed in real life. I think, I'm not sure about this part, if the religion they believed is already founded, they choose the closest one. And it doesn't limit players in anyway, so you can still meme if you want. In fact you can meme even harder because you'll have like about 100 extra religions to choose from

It also doesn't help that the fanbase around the game is as awful as the dark souls one, with every reply being either "get gud" or "I can do it with my arms tied while having my grielfriend fucking my in the ass with a strap-on, it's easy".

The AI is pretty bad (your AI, anyway, have fun having governors that are ineps), the fights are just doomstacks against doomstacks with cheese, it lacks something to let you immerse in it, and most features (like the pirates) are way too basic right now.

Distant Worlds has an entire private economy system that really makes you feel like you're in charge of an empire.
And it has space pirates. Good one. And you can play as a pirate.

Sins of Solar Empire is a RTS. Pretty decent, but average.

Endless Space 2 is a gag. Not out yet.

I don't know how I feel about CBP taking away the need to specialize cities. There are no percent boosts to yields and you need to evenly distribute your yields across your cities to maximize your local happiness. It's completely the opposite of what the original game stressed.

Percent yields and national wonders = specialization.

CBP has no specialization. You simply build national wonders in your most populous cities and plop down great people next to cities with the lowest respective yield. If a city is illiterate then that's where you put your Academy.

In vanilla you need to specialize cities. "This is my produciton city and this is my science city". In CBP it's the opposite.

>>151504001

>You simply build national wonders in your most populous cities

Hey guys, how much research should I be producing 40 years into my Stellaris campaign? After losing my dream save I had to start over, and right now I'm producing around +43 in each research.

It feels terrible, like I should be doing better, and my constant energy/mineral woes are happening even without a large fleet.

Simply put, should I just start over? How do you determine if a start will be a good one? Part of me thinks the "dream save" was a fluke since I got dozens of "Moving Shadow" events that have me +6 to a tech, but the mineral/energy problems weren't also nearly this bad.

Sins of Solar Empire is a bit annoying, because the right click is used to give orders, AND it moves the camera around. That apart, it's a fairly standard RTS, but stockpiling ressources and moving fleets around is a bit slow.

Never played Master of Orion, heard it was shit.

Sword of the Stars is okay, it has several races that don't feel like reskins with different bonuses. And the ship creating screen is fun, even through taking care of supplies is a part in the ass and you run out of fuel very quickly.

Haegemonia is kinda fun, but it has no fog of war, so you have no clue about how far your units can see. I often captured the middle of the map and suddenly had bombardement ships attacking my capital. The research is also a bit weird because you start with a limited amount of research points instead of paying for them with money.

The thing is, Darkest Dungeon was pretty good during the early Early Access. They had a good formula going, where the two ways to do well were to either treat your units well, or treat them as disposable means to an end, with the first getting better results but requiring actual investment and learning how to do things right, avoiding or managing risks, with debuffs being a constant but manageable factor. It was fun.
Then they added more grinding. Then they buffed enemies and nerfed you guy's bonuses. Then they added more grinding. Then they put caps on just about every good Stat your guys could have, making bonuses to several stats pointless since most of it would evaporate and what remained wasn't enough to make a difference. Then they added even more grinding. Then, in the final dungeon, they abandoned the "hope/despair" duality present in the rest of the game, around which several major mechanics were based, and replaced it with a copy-pasted "ooh, everything is pointless and you suck" in an attempt to be Lovecraftian when it already WAS, and should have stuck with what made it unique in the first place.

so guys, I played Stellaris because I thought it would be interesting but it turned out to be pretty lackluster. I expected it to be more about micromanaging an empire, trading and all sorts of cool shit. but it's basically just hoard resources, build fleet, attack and repeat until you've won.

what is a good space 4x game that requires brain activity? good graphics, bad graphics turn based or realtime, I don't give a shit I just want that feeling again when I was learning how to play Dwarf Fortress and was constantly losing.

Hang on, let me explain a little more.

Are you familiar with the Total War games, where buildings improve your town's economy, and depending from your taxation, you can get a percentage on that private economy?
Distant Worlds is the same, but with a twist : private sector will use your infrastructures and building to develop, and they will pay you for it. In other words, you will have a lot of private mining ships and freighters built at your spaceport (they don't count in the building queu), and YOU get money for it. In fact, it's pretty common to have 0% taxation, as the money you get from building these is pretty high.

Add to this that the research tree is a lot bigger (you can start a game without warp drive and you have to find it and research it, and each upgrade incrases how far you can travel), that the ship building system is a lot more complete but less of a pain compared to Star Ruler 2 where you build it hexagon per hexagon.
Add to this that Distant Worlds : Universe is actually the basic game with 2-3 expansions.
Add to this that ground combat is more than just numbers, you get to see the fights (through it's just icons shooting at each others).
And you can board ships.

HOWEVER : it's less diplomatically-oriented than Stellaris, and focuses more on developement and expansion. There are also less different armies (no xenomorph army for you), and it's 2D.
>>
>>151495036
>is it any good?
not really
>what are some bad things about it?
you will have some fun to begin with, but it gets very tedious and boring late game due to 0 (zero) depth
>do human names match races so i don't get a black guy called lim wong?
you will get a black dude named Ching Ping and an asian named Mohammad Assad Faheem
>can i disable spics?
with mods, yes
>>
>>151552001
AND, there are many things with Distant Worlds that are weird.
For example, the game starts completely automated, and will scare you if you try to turn the automaton off.

But you have to, otherwise the AI will override all your orders and you'll end up being just a spectator clicking on "okay" when asked to build ships.
There's also an editing mode (basically a cheat mode) that you can open any time. Don't give in.

It also doesn't explain much, and you have to figure out most of the stuff yourself.
For example, one of your first task must be to secure a fuel source. That means going to the ship design screen, checking what your ship use as fuel, find a planet with that gas, and build a gas mining station on it.
And I'm not sure, but I think ressources can run out (you can have them regenerating when you start a game, however).

And it's also a little depressing, the music is okay, but you never hear anyone talking, and all the information you get is dry. You never have the feeling you're talking to anyone.
>>
>>151553031
>>151553585
ok, now I have an erection. I was going to pirate it, but now I'm just going to buy it.
also, I've already read the negative reviews on steam and the only negative thing people seem to say is "bad UI" which would probably be the case if DF was on steam (so all those reviews count as positive ones to me)

thanks m8
>>
>>151552374
In the Stellaris common folder.
>>
>>151554802
Also, you can play as a pirate faction.

Pirates don't start on a planet, they start with a moving building ship. Think of a mothership.
There are three playstyles for pirates :
-smuggler, who focus on extracting ressources and selling them to empires,
-balanced, who does everything,
-yarr (not the real name), who are more focused on raping and pillaging.
You're not restricted to a playstyle but you get advantage.

The basic idea of pirates is that they're bleeding money all the time, but unlike normal empires, they get money by boarding or destroying ships, so if you engage an enemy fleet, as long as you can inflict losses, you get money.
I don't really know how boarding work, but I also think that the pirate have regenerating boarding parties, while imperial crews need to be repleted.

Pirates can also gain influence on neutral planets and eventually build pirates bases on them to get a safe input of money.

The interesting thing is that pirates have different victory conditions than "normal" players, so it's theorically possible to have a pirate player cooperating with an imperial player, but I never tried Distant Worlds online, so I don't know for sure.
What I do know is that if I can even play online, I'm going to be the biggest pest and game disruptor you ever met.
>>
>>151552374
Come on man, do we have to hold your dick while you do it too?
>>
>>151555789
so wait, if you play as an empire can you buy shit from pirates?
>>
>>151556254
Yeah, you can get them to supply you with a specific ressources, or you can pay them to defend one of your facilities.
Or to attack someone else's.

But it's a bid, it's not guaranteed, so the more pirate empires you have, the more likely someone will take on your offer.
Also, pirates are advantaged when the game starts, so the first communications you'll get will ALWAYS be "pay for our protection or die", and you better pay because they'll murder you.
>>
>>151554802
Not the same anon who was giving an overview of Distant Worlds, but I did purchase it rather recently.
Its been great fun so far. I've got a game where I started as pre-warp humans in a huge 400 star cluster galaxy. Started right outside the territory range of a more advanced race of reptilian warrior Mortelans and it's been a roller coaster of a ride up to establishing myself as a player in inter-galactic affairs instead of being basically an uppity little shit of an independent world.
And that's just in the cluster of stars my Homeworld is in. Each cluster has almost been like its own continent with varied histories.

Now, I will say that this is my fourth game I've started, but also the longest I've stuck with. Getting discouraged by all the options and mechanics is definitely possible, it definitely almost happened with me.
Push through it, and maybe get a UI mod. Neatens things up a bit.

Fuck you amplitude, you can't even trade for resources anymore.

>Am l the only one who doen't care about victory conditions in Stellaris?
I think most people don't, since it's designed less like a traditional 4x and more like a gs game as far as progression goes. The goal really isn't a goal, it's just something that ends the game. In most of Paradox's games the only thing that ends the game is a time limit that ends a specific era of human history, Stellaris doesn't have that.

A wrong assumption, as it turned out. All that other shit didn't help, either. I spawned in a really shitty spot, and inward expansion is my only way to go. The one advantage to being a peacenick multiculturalist is that building up individual planets goes ridiculously quickly.

This 'nak union seems like it could put up a fight. Or maybe not.

The game really needs to do something about blobbing. Like actually ganging on overly aggressive blob.
But first it needs more peacetime mechanics.
>>
>>151621336
I agree. At present, there's a massive advantage to playing as a conquerer. One problem is that the AI is utter shit at war. They'll sit in a way for decades, barely doing anything. Literally just keeping their main fleet at their homeworld and sitting idly by while you take the periphery. I love Stellaris, but this shit needs to be fixed.

And yeah, you need more ways of influencing empires through diplomacy.

Why a xenophobic purge 'em all empire gives a shit about truces is anyone's guess. The galaxy trembles before the Waifu Superiorty League and these xenos defensive pacts won't save them.
I even have jump drives. I just hope one of these endgame crisis happens soon. I mean, it's already 2305 or so.

>i'd love it if the game gave me a little more control over space battles, but you cant have it all.
I don't like idea of controlling both strategy and tactics. Although the fact that fleets can't move while fighting is bad, IMO. There shouldn't be a special retreat button.

>still, i might try out a zenophile empire next, and try to uplift some monkeys :D
Don't pick Xenophile ethos, because protectorates are somewhat worthless. Neutral empires can inflitrate instead bringing xenos into your multicultural utopia.
Although fanatic xenophiles have special edict to attract alien migrants, but you'd need to set up migration treaties first.

>>151623050
the fleets not moving is a big issue for me, its a huge pain in the ass to have to set my fleet to passive and wait, hoping that the enemy fleet is using short range weapons so that they'll be drawn in to the range of my defense stations.

the kzin are muh easier to play, ethically its impossible NOT to eat a pre-sentient species.
>>
>>151622983
There should be "fuck the police" button. It's not like truces are protecting anyone, anyway. Player included.

Peace-oriented empires do need casus beli system (They do have rudimentary system, but it's no good) and war-oriented should have wargoals that just let them take anything they occupy.

But there needs to be better diplomacy, so overt agression would be met with massive alliance for retaliation.

And on a related note, I think the game need much harder and lower fleet cap. You want more ships? Better start making vassals and those vassals will have their own AI just waiting to fuck with you.

I was able to settle some lux's and got the Zulu to DOW England, but that didn't stop England and Germany from joint DOWing me on turn 2. Fortunately, Portugal doesn't have anybody to joint DOW with, so she's benched for now.

Pointers, tips, comments, and admonishments welcome.
>>
>>151629132
Hard cap per empire would force blobs to split into vassal groups, relying on vassals to bring extra support and risking uprising like Jesus intended.

Alternatively, cap for fleets in movement, attrition-esque so garrisoning would be justified.
>>
Honestly, i think the Plantoid ships are actually the best looking ships imo. They fit well with the theme i'm going for with my empire.

A hard cap is just plain bullshit, and will always feel like artificial bullshit.

A (comparatively simple) system of replenishment/fuel tankers to keep fleets running would solve most of the blobbing, becasue it forces you to protect this supply line.

Another thing are those uprisings.
It SHOULD require a few warships to stop them from happening.

But the 'FEWER UNITS, MAKE UNITS EXPENSIVE, MORE HARDCAPS mania makes all that impossible.

Good luck.

I read an Carl's Guide to that scenario and attemmpted what he did on the same exact map. This was the result. I defeated England like Carl, but in my playthrough Portugal DOWd me and there wasn't a damn thing I could do to stop it.

Ultimately, months later, I tried again. I found a river in the hills with mountains that blocked nearly every angle canons could use on my cities. My entire territory was constantly surrounded by European units but they just couldn't break into my core area... then I lost to Ethiopia.

I loaded a one of my earlier saves and prioritized culture (I was so scared of Europeans that I didn't build a Hermitage until like turn 75) and was able to eek out a victory.

I don't think I'm going to make it.

Still at war with Germany and UK. Portugal eliminated the Zulu about 15 turns back, but still haven't started a new war. I'm just counting the turns 'till they decide to wipe me out.

Your strategy was pretty much the only one that people had used successfully over at civfanatics - get a start where you can turtle up and just culture out FTW.

I am trying to see if there's another way to win - to actually BEAT the Portuguese. They are weak early game, and the Zulu can stand for dozens of turns against them by themselves - but it's hard to focus on taking out Portugal because UK DOW's you whether they're at war with the zulu or not, they covet so hard.

It's not an option unless you are willing to play again and again and just hope you get lucky. Whatever European power you don't defeat early on will just snowball and annihilate you at the end of the game.

You want this achievement in your lifetime, right? Then restart your games until you see some mountains to your north. Move your settlers there and find a place where canons can't hit you but from a few spots. It's going to be hard enough using that strategy without you making it harder for yourself.

What's the best composition for a laser-based fleet? So far I've got;

>12 all-large battleships with tachyon lances

For what it's worth, the composition let me steamroll a race of equal size that used missiles, though I don't know how much overkill the destroyers really are.

Everything is going better than expected. Let me sum it up.

Conquered Japan. Long peace where I didn't even expand much, just focused on developing what I had. Egypt DOWd me. I took the Eastern coast of Africa all the way to Thebes, claiming most of the wonders in the game. I forced what remained of Egypt to capitulate to me.

Gandhi told me not to get too close to Ur. I told Gandhi to fuck off. Gandhi told me my skull would make a nice goblet. It's not working out too well for him at this point.

Once I conquer all the way to Crimea I'll start focusing on development and building a navy.

Also I have the most popular religion in the gmae, Spanning Sweden and Denmark. Also I have 9 allied CS out of the total 16. I might go Diplo Victory.

Playing as Montezuma, have a great capital, and this leads me to start building wonders once I have five Jaguars, mostly trained on barbarians, one upgraded to Spearman, and an Archer.
But the attack on Onondaga doesn't go well, I build Statue of Zeus only after Temple of Artemis, and the terrain between Tenochtitlan and Onondaga is pretty forested, so I can't get my lately-built Catapult to the siege to back me up. It seems I'm going to lose.
So then Hiwatha offers me a peace deal- take a city he just founded between our empires. The treaty is only ten turns, and the city would be a good staging point, and the peace would give me time to bring up my Catapult. I demand all his gold profits too, and we strike the deal.
He doesn't fucking give me the city.

cod isnt innovative, but its still a solid game, regardless of if you dont like it or not. and its clearly doing a lot right if it pulls in so many players each year. a game cant be that good if only a few 100 or so people still play it, while a game that came out earlier draws in thousands upon thousands, as well as has 10k+ dollar tournaments every few months.

sorry man, I played aoe 2 when it first came out. >40 techs ahead of a shitty African country
Did you install a real-world mod or did I miss an update?
>>
>>151736914
It's Caveman 2 Cosmos, I had a good start and a three or four lucky tech huts. Also raging barbarians so you get Great Hunters faster, the AI is too retarded to know how to use them and keeps settling them as Super Specialists instead of making them hunt. Every new animal you can KO (not kill) and bring back to your nation gives a permanent +1 science until writing because of folklore or something, and Master Hunters KO animals 45% of the time instead of the normal 5% so they're extremely broken with Raging Barbarians
Also there's a weird exploit where if you make a shitton of Gatherers and upgrade them to Workers after Sedentary Lifestyle then repeatedly make and demolish wetland / desert / woodland / whatever camps, you can literally generate resources on every tile you own.

I know very little about 40K, but unbidden don't seem that chaotic. They are more resembling what I heard about Dark Eldars, with all this soul-eating. Too nice and sleek for chaos overall.

I'd like an evil cult crisis. And maybe crisis that rises from earth on colonies and kills organics, like Necrons.

Orc-homage chaos would be fun. Finally something for ground troops to do.

Now that's an interesting idea, have them change their expression/stances based on your relation.
Like when you first meet them they're suspicious, if you're on good terms with them they look friendly, if you have a bad relationship they stand around with their hands behind their backs or arms crossed trying to look intimidating.
>>

'Rebels' are just barbarians.

And barbarian AI is set to suicidally charge player units whenever that is possible, or pillage player tiles, etc.
Only if there is absolutely nothing you own in range will tehy attack city states or AI units and cities.

If you get a unit with 3+ vision, you can see how barbarian and AI units sometimes literally ignore each other.

Barbarians always want attack you, and the AI Civs 'know' this and do not attack the barbarians.
The upside of this is that the AI is absolutely terrible at dealign with barbarians. I have seen AI Civs lose to barbarians.a few times.

I nearly shat myself laughing so hard when I found Attila's Court and it was in barbarian hands.

There might not be, but there's a confirmed military policy called Native Purge or whatever that gives you combat bonuses against units from earlier eras.

Had a few great moments in my Kzinti campaign. I stopped paying attention to the factions and suddenly i get all these rebel armies showing up. My noble heroes fucked em up in seconds.

I was also marshaling my forces for an attack on the mith-fell hierarchy at some border planets and noticed one of my fleets was bombarding something, i zoomed in to find them nuking some pre-space flight species, you just cant leave these guys alone for a second.

My war with the Mith-Fell resulted in me losing a fleet of 15 battleships to 70 or so corvettes, i dont know how or why that happened, but i retaliated with two 20k fleets and wiped those cunts out, resulting in me stealing the tech for Kinetic Artillery and Hyper Shields.

i fucking love being kzin.

For real though, I'd love some magic in the game, magitech is a genre that really needs to get a bit more loving.

It would also encourage Spiritualists a bit more, maybe the magic/mystical elements are given special focus for Spiritualists?

Also, is it just me or should there be a "Psychically Sensitive" racial trait to add bonuses for Psionic abilities? At the moment it feels odd we have mental soldiers but no traits that modify their abilities.

Not long after my defeat of the Indian menace, Bluetooth initiated a surprise attack. He was surprisingly teched up, but my 20% Hellenic League combat bonus evened the odds.

Most of his forces were in Egypt and sieged Budapest (with fucking Gatling guns instead of artillery) I slowly converged my forces in the south on them and am in the process of taking his last two cities there.

Anatolia was relatively unguarded and my veterans from the campaign against India moved down and took the Danish cities one by one.

I made it all he way to the Balkans but then a large push came and lost my foothold there. They are now surging back onto Anatolia. Also my unhappiness from the conquests is through the roof. My golden age is the only thing keeping me below 100.

My religion is a lifesaver. I get 2 turns worth of culture from every kill, and large science, culture, gold, and golden age points from taking cities. I made it to tier III Autocracy policies and closed the tech gap with Harrold from this war alone.

Relations with England are souring. Elizabeth may be the source of my next war.

You could say thats one of the biggest problems with the game, events and decisions matter very little and every ethos is mostly the same.

Would be nice if the tech tree was expanded with techs unique (and not this 1% chance if you arent spiritualist) to each ethos and events, at the very least it would reduce the particle lancer spam also the idea of your "flagship" as a lovercraftian cult spiritualist being an actual lovercraftian horror has its charm

Sorry, your best bet is the wiki.
http://wiki.swordofthestars.com/sots1/Tactical_Combat

Combat was simpler as well, sections just had HP, armor just increased it. but it still had the spread of weapons and varying damage over range.

Your best bet to kill a ship though is to destroy the rear section first to kill the movement then the middle or front section, you could focus fire a weapon to destroy it if you wanted by clicking near or on said weapon.
