I posted yesterday stating how I'm attempting to learn Lance and struggling with it. I am still struggling with it today. However, I think I found my problem.

I'm playing it too much like SnS. I feel like with the shield and the triple hop, I can easily escape any situation unharmed. I'm also still trying to get used to countering things.

Anyone know a good way to get out if this mindset? And should I be working on my position more than reacting to moves?

So before I break this game into small pieces:

How do you use the great sword and command damage? I tell my hunter to command damage, and command him to roll, but he's too slow. Agile monsters, aka all monsters are able to dodge around and perform 2-3 attacks while I sit around and nigger out.

Fighting gore magala, simply fight, extremely long tells and if I were using any other weapon, aka a weapon that obeys the commands, it would be simple.

The greatsword is too fucking SLOW, how are you supposed to fucking hit some WALKING monster that's exhausted when it just FUCKING WALKS OUT OF MY CHARGE

I'm getting so fucking mad being bored and doing nothing but dodging, and then occasionally take some damage. I demand damage be done, and in order for that to happen, great swords NEED TO FUCKING BE FASTER. It cannot take 5-7 seconds for a level 3 charge, it has to fucking happen sooner.

I'm just about to break this fucking game for being so fucking unfair. Why do I need equipment skills to fucking move around normally?

You said you wanted to guard lance, the lance gets a special guard with adept, not the meme dodge. If you guard within the perfect timing you nullify all damage (free Guard+2) and get to do a 2-hit follow up that sums more than 100 MV IIRC.

That said, the popular Lance style is Striker, where you spam the charge finisher (70 MV) and uses Guard Rage + the 2 absolute evasions for a kinda evade lancing style.

When your gauge is filled, R should be your main attack as its your strongest, but you always want to do something after an R combo to recoup some spirit.

Thing is, the charge finisher has 70 MV on Striker. Added with some pokes, that's almost GS charges tier of damage and more DPS than anything (coupled with Guard Rage). All that added to the fact that it is available at any given moment since all you have to do is spam R+X+A or Special Attack, as with GS you have to wait the lvl 3 and have an appropriate opening to actually hit the thing.

MH can be fun soloing and discovering the game by yourself little by little, but the online is where most of the fun is at.

Despite this general being super salty and full of shitposting, the online communities for MonHun have been the most helpful and less cancerous I've seen in a while.

Take a while to see guides online about how the game works (there's some on the OP, if you're interested) and ask people when you can't find something on your own.

Download the Ping's Dex (at the OP) for resources on everything.

You'll have to do the village eventually to unlock stuff, but if you want to do online right away, it's not a big deal.

Also, most people say that cats are a crutch and they distract the monster too much, which makes it harder to learn their attack patterns. But roll what you're comfortable with. Me myself like the challenge so I don't bring cats most of the time.

Thing with the MH community, it's that even if most members are dick-stroking ego bastards that only care for minmaxed sets and speedruns, most people are willing to help and spread useful stuff about the game so that the experience is less cancerous in general, since the game itself does a poor job of teaching most of the important, less obvious stuff.

In that regard, it's better than most communities where all you ever see is shitposting and flaming. Also, we have few ecelebs to ever deal with, so there's less gossip altogether, and good lord how I hate that.

I've never touched a bowgun. Though personal experience is a bowgun user sits on a rock or far away from the monster for the entire fight. If the monster goes for them they just run and roll for the next ten minutes doing nothing, trying not to get 1 shot in their paper armor. So you just babysit so the gunner doesn't have to deal with actually playing the game

Does bow get better later or what? I tried hunting village Astalos with the bow and fuck it took forever. I was shooting it nonstop for probably 25 minutes before it finally died, and it wasn't even an exciting death. I threw in power shots and everything.
