"There are two types of games. The "Long Play", and the "Replay". The long play is any game that is meant to be played once within it's own story. Most linear RPG's or "story based" games would be in here. Of course you can replay them its just that you most likely won't more than once or twice a year.

Long plays don't have to be long. Portal is something 3 hours but is still a long play game.

The "Replay" games are anything that bring people back daily, or weekly,... This could be an mmo, online fps, etc..

These games are the easiest to develop but hardest to come up with the ideas for. Imagine thinking of rocket league. This is the pinnacle of reply games, if someone gave you the idea you could go create it and have the game up in ready within a month. The hard part is in thinking of something that people would actually want to replay.

And this is why Undertale is the greatest game of all time. Not only is it Long Play but it is also Reply which is why I vote it for best game of 2015" - Dan "the Man" Gamerston

Understandable, but I ca only imagine combat being clunky and cramped given the size. That in turn will probably mean the enemies will have to be easy to compensate for it (which will suck) or the environment won't change much to keep as much space as possible (again, that sucks).

It would be nice if your boss rooms got a bigger space to allow variety in them and to also be a good indicator for the player that they entered a boss room.

So far I haven't had any trouble telling player from enemy bullets and I don't want to use many colors but when I put out the demo maybe players will change my mind. I think another option could be to use a shade of gray but so far I'm only using that for defeated enemies.

I'm going to try a mix of room sizes for the demo. I will probably generally use larger rooms that have little or no cover and leave these tight spaces for only a few occasions.

I'm trying to check for collisions against the small circle only. When the object isn't rotated, it's easy; I just check based on the (x,y) position and r1. But how do I check for collisions when the object is rotated?

CryEngine dev first time posting,I don't know if its allowed here since i don't see mention in the OP so tell me and I will delete the post and go somewhere else.
I'm looking for others that work in it to exchange opinions notably about version 5.

So I got reasonably deep as far as level design goes and after making 4 square kilometers map and assets in version 3 when Crytek pulled the rug under my feet and announced the version 5 will come blank and with that stripped the good framework version 3.x offered for decent fps game,which I was hoping to implement directly and easily.
Now I have to write/make characters from scratch and write ai.Since I cant use any of the sample code and I dont know how to program in c++ I am stuck with a dick in my ass and countless hours wasted.
Whats your take on this and how would you proceed.

License has changed and EaaS not for sale/supported anymore.
Also they changed the UI and workflow in version 5 from the ground and discontinued a lot of tools especially custom character creation tool which broke the pipe line in half.
There was a lack of documentation and support as it was not to mention dead forum,half ass answers,and example user code that works only up to 3.8.
Old UI editor is still supported but I don't know for how long and some of the important tools are already broken because of conflicting code with the new version.
I still dont know what I will be doing for the audio since Cryengine has some deal someone and I am only allowed to use 200 sound assets and if I want more I have to pay.
While the engine is now flexible nd alows to use any audio engine you want I don't know what i will going to do,since every software for audio has to be paid for.I am yet to see about FMOD and their indie license but I am far from that for now so whatever.

Make sure your export module is set correctly at the top of the screen. I've had GM:S change it to Steam rather than Windows on occassion, and that would prevent it from booting.

Also, check GM:S for updates, and if all else fails, try rebooting. Sometimes fixes weird bugs with GM:S, usually only software related ones though.

Game Maker is Scratch but better.

I've been making GM games for a few years now, and when I had to try Scratch (as part of an experimental workshop at my school) I thought it was a substantial downgrade. For fuck's sake, Scratch can't even differentiate between instances!

GM is easy to use and it has an actual scripting language instead of shitty blocks. You should have a field time with it.
Alternatives are Multimedia Fusion and Construct 2.

Dialogue system is in, people have names and investigate noise.

But now that my code turns more into Italian noodles every time I work on the game I want to bring some structure into it. Finite state machines seem to be the way to go, but I have no experience with that.

Should I put an object's behaviour that's independent from its state outside of the state or copy it into every individual state? I would go with the former but I don't know what's the better practice in case I want to change it in the future.

Okay, if I post some pics of what I'm currently working on will you go a bit easier on me. I'm only shilling a little bit and I do post here occasionally and on /g/ and /tv/ every single day.

I'm currently working on a dungeon crawler which generated maps by using BSP trees to split the area into rooms and then I use sort of like cellular generation to seed spots for different areas (like stages getting deeper into the map). They're all guarunteed to be connected and flow without having inaccesable areas.

So far it's pretty much working good. I'm writing an actor class now so I can start placing items and developing the different areas.

No actual gameplay yet, although I have made a player class and I stole some graphics from legend of zelda. It has animation, stolen from zelda and you can walk the guy around and he'll collide with the map walls.
That was pretty tough to do as the map can be really large, It's stored as an array and I only look up the values in a 3x3 grid around the player. Those cells get made into a series of rects which is then tested for overlap with an ellipse collider on the player. So it's fairly efficient on a map of any size.
So you can walk him around right now, but not much else. Thanks for the feedback.

I don't know the only way to get good seems to be what /ic/ suggest. Reading Scott Robertson book and Peter Han book it just seems like it is putting in the hours that count. I want to get good not have fun.

Piecing together all the basics currently, being a 1 man show making everything from scratch is gonna be a hard time so I'm keeping expectations in check. I'm thinking it'll be more useful in archviz or photoreal/narrative experiences rather than games.

It sounds cheesy but I think that VR gaming needs a totally different set of rules. Traditional conventions don't work the same in VR and there is really room for it to grow if innovation comes, but at the moment almost everything I've seen is 'X genre and gameplay, but with VR!' I think that once VR is mainstream popular those innovators will come out of the woodwork, and I'm really interested to see what becomes of it.

What would they iterate on at this point? PC hardware is the bottleneck in terms of performance, and I'm not sure what they could add onto the headset side other than wireless which is a pipe dream at this point. I think they'd be better off upgrading just the controllers to something wearable
