cheesed the 4 directional movement into 2 directions that kinda feels like 4 like that one anon suggested. also you can window the game now Game maker doesn't let you switch from borderless to non-borderless in runtime but theres a plugin that does it I think so I might give that a go.

Interesting, I was just brainstorming for an RPG where some characters have the power of teleportation and levitation. Do you have any ideas about how to incorporate those without game-breaking?

For levitation/telekinesis, I was thinking about lifting enemies to attack hidden weak points or set them off balance for increased damage. Teleportation could be useful in a tactics RPG, but I'm not sure how to incorporate it into a turn-based one like FF/SMT/etc.

For teleportation, you could do a "teleporting the target away" type thing, where the target gets essentially removed from the fight for one turn, preventing them from taking damage or attacking for that turn.

Just thought of this: maybe you can control stuff within the environment of the battlefield (like the cube in the pic), and have another character use their power over space to do something like Portal. Does that seem too derivative or unnecessary for a turn-based RPG? I'm trying to think of ways to make things more interesting than "select enemy, press button" but I'm not the greatest at game design.

An entire school of magic dedicated solely to dropping rocks on enemies seems a little strange.

In fact, you could lump the "drop environment on enemies" thing into teleportation magic. The caster selects an environment piece, selects a target, the environment piece gets teleported into the air above the target's head. No lifting needed.

Have good dialogue, if your game has dialogue. I don't know if it's possible to write things with the intention of them being quotable and not have it sound like complete shit, but you should let people test your game and see if it resonates with them.

If your game is intended to be more about gameplay experiences than storytelling experiences, you might have less fans off the bat. In those cases, just make your gameplay very enjoyable and rewarding.

Yeah, I'm trying to find more uses for control over space besides a couple of uses.It's a little hard to do it without being very boring or very over-powered. I'll keep thinking about it.

Yeah, it's currently a very straight-forward FF-style system. I'm trying to expand interactivity, though, and give the player more options besides select-enemy-and-attack. It depends on how powerful you let the players get.
After all, sufficiently-powerful space compression creates a black hole, which is similarly broken.
The trick is simply to not give players the option to access such power.

In fact, you could even argue that the player isn't truly controlling time, but rather your allies'/enemies' perception of it. A difference in proximity to a gravitational source causes time dilation, in which the farther party is experiencing time faster than the slower party is. My biggest piece of advice, which I tend to not follow and then kick myself for it, is to never delete anything. Even if you get a better idea, modify it, add it in, but don't remove the old one. Having all of your progress is really handy if you need old information and it is no longer accessible.

Basic project management, just keep a list of all the things you need to complete and mark them off one at a time. It's okay to move back and forth between two tasks or maybe even three, but never flit about between a dozen tasks or nothing will ever get completed.

Doing this for a few days is enough to help you gauge what you're capable of doing, and soon it becomes natural to set aside a handful of tasks everyday and complete all or almost all of them in an orderly fashion.

When I did rapid prototyping with a small team, we didn't have any project management stuff so we just created sections of a whiteboard and made a sticky note for each task:

When I worked on a team at a larger company, we had bug-tracking/project management stuff (Jira) for that. Now I'm working on my own, I use those previous categories on Trello. It's nice to be able to add tasks when you're away from your desk.

I wasn't able to work on my game for the last three days so we'll call this Day 5 of Trying to Make Video Games.

Today I started playing with getting enemy waves to spawn how I wanted when the "leader" of the previous wave was killed. I have yet to implement any scoring/lives/damage systems, and I'm realizing in my tests that I'm going to have to do something to make sure the player can't be killed by the laser after they respawn from killing the enemy that shot the laser like in the second wave there. Also trying to prevent the player from killing enemies earlier than they're supposed to while the enemies are flying in.

I probably ought to incorporate damage/lives/scoring before I get too much farther so I can copy shit over and not have to go back and manually write it for every enemy/whatever.

Roommate who's making the enemy sprites shrunk down the laser emitter to a more reasonable size. Will have to make variations to help the player better understand how it's going to fire depending on the wave. Cut off turrets that won't be used, and maybe color ones differently that will fire with different timing.

It's finally starting to look sort of like a game. I'm excited.

Progress posting for Rocket Xeno:

So more people have told me my game is too hard. I sort of expected this as it does get pretty intense 30 seconds in.

The fix I have been working on is an additional powerup system: performing certain actions enough times spawns a mini-powerup. Something not quite as strong as the shield and orb ( both of which are basically get-out-of-jail-free cards ) but still enough to take some of the stress off.

Pic related is the first of these. Basic idea is:
-Flies around for 10 seconds at the bottom of your screen moving towards the last place the player clicked/tapped ( IE: Step: move_towards_point ( mouse_x,50,4 )
-Reflects enemy fire that hits the dome part
-pickup to spawn this thing appears after intercepting 15 enemy shots. Counter resets after the powerup vanishes.

Knocking out more character portraits since I'm on a roll, the two new ones are the blood goddess Liath, (crowned one) and Mauve Maggie, a crazy witch. Still working out how their actual characters will behave.

Still not done fucking around with Maggie's face/design , but I'm pretty satisfied with Liath.

Breaking debris is one half of the gimmick, the other is attaching/welding to your ship.
Although the system has a complicated backend and is internally based on grids, it's intended to make any notion of 'grid' or 'attachment point' disappear from the player's consideration. I totally know where you're coming from, and it's going to be interesting working with Arikado on improving the UI to make it work. I used Fire Emblem sprites as kind of a guide for portrait size, so it fits the GBA resolution the game is natively at. I'll try my hardest to make something that people can approve of, since 48x40 is too damn small for a portrait.

I think fan art is a nice motivation fuel, and it also establishes some sort of community. Just look how popular the bunny idol fan art or the DD9 collab pic has become. I'm saving them if I can, and if I need some motivation for my own project I just look at them and think that one day someone would care about my broken mess of a code and pixelated abominations, so I have to keep on going for him/her.

If you're a complete newb and need to start with a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment, download Game Maker. A better option in my opinion, though I will admit I didn't do this until after screwing around in Game Maker as a teen 10+ years ago, is to pick a skill and learn about it.

Here's roughly my path: I learned HTML and PHP around a similar time as GM (they aren't game dev but got my feet wet in coding, also PHP is awful). I put hundreds of hours into pixel art and pixel fonts, even though I'm not an artist, because I want to be able to hold my own for basic shit and make placeholders at a minimum. I also learned to manipulate simple shit in blender but I'm a shit 3d artist and can't texture. Then I learned C front-to-back from a book (it's a small and beautiful language), and moved into C++ and bought the C++ elitism (which I don't recommend, but it IS a good language). C++ will give you good preparation to download UE4 which has an amazing offer (free until you've made some real cash at which point they want a flat %). C++ is considered "hard" so it's probably not something to try to take a shortcut and start with. I can't advise game engines beyond UE4 seeming to be the best deal, because I'm still a do-it-yourself elitist.
