You are the best judge on that.
If its your very first try then consider following a tutorial.

But if you know your character isn't going to have finger movement then you don't need finger bones.

If it a human character then its worth having a head and neck bone.

I think you will have some issues with animating because of the model's topology.

The bone structure looks ok, Maybe the start of the wrist looks a bit high. (unless you are using it as a twist bone for the arm)
>>
>>143640527

Is there anything I can do to salvage the topology or is it a case of making something from scratch?

desu I'm editing a template, I couldn't make something like this at this stage.
>>
>>143640605
your topology is fine
dense topology don't affect the weights, its usually more about polycount
>>
>>143640372
>subdiv
that's not for games. turn that shit off.
>>
This is probably a stupid question, but in GM, how do I set the resolution? Is it the width/height option in room properties/settings? Do I need to set the same resolution for every single room? Why would I ever want to have different ones, won't that mess up my sprites?
>>
>>143640652

I was actually considering lowering the polycount, though I don't even know at this stage what a decent polycount is for a low poly model.
>>
Suppose I want to make a game that parodies various other video games.

What are the most iconic video game "scenes" that I could parody? (like how movies often parody Taxi Driver, The Matrix, etc)

width and height at room settings are the windows total size, if you want a huge world map for a rpg like game you can have a 10k x 10k room. Of course you don't want to show all of that all the time and you'll want to keep the window resolution to something smaller, like you too keep everything at the same size and don't mess with your graphics. That's where you use views. Google a little on that, you will love the shit you can do with them

>>

Finally done with the cowgirl texyuring.
I'm not too happy about her mainly because I didn't have a clear idea of what hair/face/clothes to give her so I kinda came up with things while doing the model.

Now I either rig her, move on to cat girl or go back to retexture bunny loli.
>>

then how do you explain the fact that ALL geometry is converted to triangles before it's put on GPU?
>>
>>143641404
those are two different things

a quad that is cut into 2 triangles have different shading than a triangle you made
use decimate and triangulate your model and use specular and smooth shade on it and see what i mean

Needs some adjustments, but with shaders the size shouldn't be a problem.

>>
>>143641597
on the contrary, triangulated quad will behave exactly the same as two triangles, what you said doesn't make sense. your model editor and the game are two different things

you can fuck up any face to deform terribly, triangles and ngons have nothing to do with animation and not using them won't save you from problems. it's a subdiv modelling boogoeyman that has nothing to do with realtime models and animations

Got my 4 starter spells up and running. A single target spell (flame bolt), an AOE spell (fire ball), a spell that uses a different skill (shock), and a healing spell (cure light wounds).

These 4 test almost everything, except for spells which don't require a target to cast. I expect that works, but I don't really know until I add a spell like Cure-All. Another time though.

Next up I have 3 magic tasks left before I can move on:
- Characters shouldn't be able to cast spells they haven't learned
- Characters have to learn spells from spellbook items (and must have the required level of mastery)
- Spellbook pages shouldn't be visible if the character doesn't know any spells in that school

Tell him a real dev from a real company that works with a real programmer for real money who puts real comments in his code that your guy would consider unprofessional says to consider the fact that he has never met or worked with this phantom 'real programmer' that he's so afraid of and neither have I.

But wait, there's more. We work with another one-man studio. That guy leaves even more comments than my boss does that your guy would consider unprofessional. These are programmers who built an entire game engine and accompanying JIT compiler. Google's code has 'unprofessional' remarks in them. I put 'unprofessional' in-jokes and such in all my concept art for the game.

Tell him he doesn't know what a 'professional coder' (or a 'professional game development environment') is. Code-comments are good documentation and a good stress relief and he's bogging down development by forcing you to whitewash the codebase rather than make the game. Ask him what his objective is: selling the codebase or making a game. We all fuck around a little when we make games; what's the point of it if you're not having fun? It's not like your customers/players are going to see your code comments or my terrible concept-art jokes.

I'm the anon who've replied to you positively about GM. I did so because GM is the engine I choose to work on for the next couple of years. But that's just me, I'm not you. You could very well find your way with Unity2D and realize whatever you wish to realize. Besides I noticed /agdg/ being biased towards GM regarding 2D (I'm guilty of this too), I'm pretty sure no one exactly knows how good Unity2D is because none really have tried much more than that. Worst case scenario if you realize Unity2D isn't quite what you need then just somehow "port" your game to GM.

My point is no matter how many questions you ask here and how many replies you get the final decision is yours. Engine are just tools, what matters is what you wish to do mate. So download Unity and try it out yourself. No reason not to. If you consider yourself to be a dev that's the least you could do anyway, and you'll gain some experience by doing so.
>>
>>143657978
Same thing as GM, as C# is rarely used outside of Unity.
There's people who move from Unity to Mono for enginedev.

But ultimately C/++ is the only "portable" so to speak, language that carries over.

But don't get it twisted, GM/Unity are still fine.

I'll start taking submissions for the next recap (June) Toward the end of June.

Here's what's next for the tools site:
> Design changes based on tons of feedback from anons that it's "too big"
> Tutorials section to link useful documentation for engines, coding tutorials, getting started guides, etc
(If you have content you have written or that you found useful and you want it linked here, let me know)
> Some anons have asked for a "collab" section. Not really sure what this should do. Ideas?
> Still offering subdomains to anons that want to run gamedev blogs or want something to link to that isn't xxxxx.tumblr.com

I'm going to take a break this holiday weekend to get some actual gamedev time in, but in the meantime please leave feedback or suggestions either here in the thread or e-mail the site at [email protected]

Thanks again for putting up with my nongamedev nonsense and I hope this stuff has been useful to you guys so far.

PS2 had a fuck ton and plenty of great games still thrived.

Saying "le it has some games made in it therefore it's just as capable" is a horrible argument because 99% of games are programmed in C++.

I'm so retarded. It felt like the gameplay was too slow and a little bit boring. The problem was that the arena was just too long, making travel time between each goal really long. I made it shorter and it's much more engaging. This could be a cool idea for a "mutator mode" where you choose the length of the arena for different playstyles.

Excellent

In my case: GM is faster to work with in a lot of ways. It's not the faster engine - but I'm a lot more agile in the prototype stage in GM than I am in Unity. I partly blame the half-second to 3 second load times for any change I make versus those changes being instant in GM:S because GM:S doesn't recompile the whole codebase every time you make a change - just when you try to launch the game.

Maybe it's just that I have to sit through it every time I want to test changes made to the boss, but the transition from Tier 9 to Tier Max feels slow and uneventful.

I'm sure there was a time I thought that 50 seconds of build-up felt pretty hype, but now it feels too long.

So I cut the whole thing down to 25 seconds, made enemy reclamation more immediate (it's jarring here because normally you'd have to clear a Tier to trigger this, so there wouldn't be any nearby active enemies to just pop away), and added a thing.

And by thing, I mean WARNING! A LARGE ENEMY IS APPROACHING AT FULL THROTTLE. According to data it is identified as a greater gunship. NO REFUGE.

If you can't tell, I had a bit too much fun making this.

Sometimes I don't know where to draw the line between procrastinating and progress.

So I'm making my own game engine from scratch and I've finally got around to implementing sprites.
All I've managed to accomplish in the last hour is implementing an idle animation where if you remain idle for too long the animation will play the second loop. I guess you could say progress.

The visual design is essentially the same. Obviously, there's no indication of his personality, so it's hard to say.

Still, let's consider it:
>looks the same, personality the same
THAT would be a carbon copy.

Misses the whole point of the joke, and comes across as an "epic reference".

A better homage IMO would be one that continues with the joke of "too stubborn to even die" without completely copying the slapstick aspect.

The few devs that do risk their time and money trying to bring actually new ideas to the table are also the ones whose necks are then often and quickly on the chopping block due to nobody buying/playing their game as they created the 'not perfect' version of the new thing they made. I say this from a place of experience.

Then bigger game dev will come along, take that idea, run with it with the benefit of community feedback on it, and probably gain the success and the money from that idea. Few want to be that sacrifice - but everybody wants to be following up someone else's imperfect shot with a perfect one; they've already done 90% of the trailblazing and work.

There are many examples, yes. The real kick in the nads, though isn't watching your studio/drive bleed out because you didn't do it perfectly - and then someone came along and did it perfectly.

It's when your game genre's "Call of Duty" continues to out-sell you despite its userbase constantly moaning about 'lack of innovation' but looking at your game and going 'meh, not perfect' and then going and buying Big Box Standard Genre Game the moment it comes out. That's the real twist of the knife.

So yeah, in summary: Only spunky new upstarts dare try to break *all* the rules rather than bend them. Those few that survive learn quickly the law of the jungle and the loud-mouthed but actually uninterested customer.

The Games Market has no mercy for your dreams of being able to pursue new and weird experiences - because the people who'll buy your game are by and large uncomfortable with 'actually new' or 'actually weird' experiences; unless you've got a big old Patron or two who'll champion your new mechanics - and that's a quietly vanishing group as is. Those few who weren't cynics going into the industry often rapidly become so thanks to by and large the people holding the purse strings (Customers). For the few who can still hold on to that fragile sense of wonder and adventure in spite of all the above: I salute you.

Anyway, anon: If you want more devs to actually innovate - or for existing devs to innovate more - you gotta pay for it. Literally.

thats why indies rarely make it, because they dont give the people what they want, indie devs are not honest with themself.
people want graphics and subtle-sexiness with a little to full blown violence, because you are selling for adults, kids dont buy games
people dont care how innovative you are, if your graphics sucks, and i mean anything not unreal graphics is shit, the only game that have a chance to make it huge here is the unreal dev here with his game, take a look at his game and then take a look at the rest of games here.

if you dont trust me, study the gamer industry yourself, dont fool yourself idealistically, see whats going on
its all about the graphics nowadays, yeah people complain about those AAAs but they play it and the sequel and the like because its no that they complain about how pale the game is, what they mean is that they want more and more features (mechanics), not innovative mechanics... just more mechanics, if you can understand what i mean, thats why they go meh at your innovative game, because yeah it has a new mechanic, what i mean is (THEY WANT "MORE", NOT "NEW") in a sense of (THEY WANT QUANTITY, OVER QUALITY) any gamer will scream otherwise and say innovation is what he needs, but dont trust what you hear, only what you see...

i will get hate for this, but lets all face the truth, look at the gaming world yourself

art is lovely, but its not what people are for, and by people i dont mean this niche hippie 0.1% that look for different games with innovative concept because "muh super taste", i mean the 99% that are the normal average joe, who trusts his eyes and not his brain

Cutting it up and moving it around makes it a bit more difficult to find stuff. If there were like 20 sounds or something then I'd probably switch to that method.

>Yes you can make money sometimes but who the fuck would want a community of retards making mobile shovelware

That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is: Don't expect anyone to play your 'completely new and innovative game' even if people're whining about 'new mechanics' all the time [which was what the post I was originally responding to was about]. What people want is 'standard game, remixed with a new bell or two thrown in'. That means your Risk of Rains, your Undertales, and so on. Nobody wants to make mobile shovelware except people who're obsessed with money.

Also I'm assuming at least a portion of people who're amateur game devs here would, if given the opportunity, enjoy the idea of going professional - even if that just means selling their game.

I'm making games as a hobby too - but I make games that I want people to play, not just to tinker with the idea of game making. If you want people to play your game, you have to keep in mind the above. Getting people interested enough to play your game is the same business, whether you're selling it or giving it away for free.

I'll tell you what everyone thinks but too scared to hurt your feelings (at least I know I feel that way whenever you post progress) :

Your game looks like SHIT. It's awful and unappealing to look at. It really does feel like you're tolling us, or just having the fun of your life deving on drugs. It's ridiculous.

Now that doesn't mean you can't fix it or make it better or anything, and more than that, it doesn't mean you'll need to make huge efforts to make it better... because actually, it feels as if you MADE huge efforts to make it look like shit. Following me? There's too much crap that shouldn't be there. A good example would be that dev who doesn't have art or anything yet and just boxes fighting each others. It looks amazing and yet there's no art. He's doing the right thing by working on the mechanics, physics etc first. You should learn from that.

I don't know if you're really 14 but if you are then nice job nonetheless anon.

> Mantispinae have the most specialized larval development among all mantidflies studied to date (the life history of the Drepanicinae remains unknown): their campodeiform larvae seek out female spiders or their egg sacs which they then enter; the scarabaeiform larvae then feed on the spider eggs, draining egg contents through a piercing/sucking tube formed by modified mandibles and maxillae, pupating in the egg sac.[1]

The problem is jam saturation. It happens every time. We do a jam, people get excited and it turns out well with pretty good participation. Just ignore them anon, focus on gamedev and making progress. We all get bad days, but it's important to keep your head up and just push through. Bad days don't last forever. If you need to, go ahead and take some time off from gamedev and go do something else for a few hours. Go for a run. Keep running until you can barely breath so that you're focused on the current physical pain/soreness. It helps, especially when you're under a lot of mental stress. With a little exercise your focus will temporarily shift away from all the built up mental stress to physical stress, releasing endorphins and giving your body the workout it deserves. You'd be surprised how much it helps.

If you can't run or jog, go for a walk. If you can't walk, do some overhead arm claps.

Why the fuck are all the shitty devs, Rotate, Mothdan, Kobold, ect, always drama inducing elitist faggots? the one drama we had with Arikado, somebody with a decent game, he swallowed his pride, acknowledge his faggotry, and moved on. But retards who make Paranormal Patrol, aka, generic horror unity faggots, or meme games such as "Rotateguy"
Always induce our community with drama along with their shitty games.

4chan was created by an American during a time when Internet technology was in its infancy. 4chan is now owned by a Japanese during a time when Internet technology is in its prime.

It's a completely new era. New tech, new laws and regulations, new outlook, new mindset, new problems that need solving. It's the current year, basically.

Whatever 4chan used to be doesn't matter anymore. Reddit used to be the front page of the Internet. The front page now is Google, or your bookmarks if on mobile. Not even memes will last forever. Some other medium will probably take its place in the distant future when everyone's minds become a collective. At that point there won't be a need for memes because instead of editing a photo and adding text and then uploading it and waiting for people to view it and spread it, you'd already instantly share everyone else's thoughts. Communication will have evolved to perfection by then, making memes a relic of the past.

That puts you on the same level as rotate, good job.

I'm thinking that today I'm going to try and finalize my level generator code. That is, have it place the "End" room, and have raise the attempts quota so that there are more rooms per dungeon.

Nice nodev engine. Funny how people love this guy now just because his baby's first engine allows a bunch of juicy effects. Meanwhile our games are over looked, even if we juice em up with advanced coding, something as simple as game maker will always be on par with your expert level in c++. This triggers me.
