Can I just say something?

Sourcefam really is the worst person I've ever seen on the internet. He's not a bad person in the same way people on other boards are, like posting mutilated animals or anything. He's just rotten to the core, negative, and a bad person. He's a failure and he can't stop telling us about it all the time, and if it's wrong for us to point this out, then just ban us I guess?

It would honestly be a favor. Because lately it seems this place is an illusion where supposedly it's for gamedev but 80% of the posts belong to the same raving lunatic. It is hard to keep pouring positive energy into a place that is haunted by this person.

Anyway, that's my only input on the matter.

Fuck you, reek. You're shit and you know it. I hope something comes to you that removes you from the internet for good. I really do. You're so overdue for it.

I'm gonna have a .ini file reference an inconspicuous file that doesn't exist. You have to create the file and structure it precisely because I'm actually going to have my engine try and load the file and run the code to unlock the class. This means decompilation of some sort will be required.

after attempting to finish several lowpoly characters, he is my advice

before i start i wanna say im not good on painting faces on flat surfaces and learned this lesson in the hard way, painting faces on flat surfaces becomes a problem later on when you make more challenging characters and designs

with anime its even a bigger problem because we don't actually know how 2d faces translate to 3d topology but its always good to have rough estimate where you are going to paint.
first have a concept, if you can make concept its fine too. just make sure you have visual landmarks when painting on a 3d model.

Well, learning C++ will help you further down the road in game development, nothing wrong with that. But if considering how fast Computers are nowadays, C# would be the easier and simpler choice to dive in for 2D and even most 3D games.

C++ is recommendable if:
>you think you won't lose your motivation
>don't need fast results
>you are okay with a challange of brainbreaking
>maybe want to do some AAA stuff in the future

C++ is not a real language. Unity C# is the only way to make a game.

If you learn c++, learning c# will take you 0 time and effort. Stick to it if you already started.

No, c# has mono which unity uses and unity works on all sorts of oses.

If you have already started C++ and you don't have any problems, then you might as well continue of course. But even if you drop it and start C# or another Language, transitioning isn't that hard, because most programming languages have fairly similar logic syntax.

Also i am not aware of any c# porting problems, Engines like Unity even allow you to directly Build/Port C# to all Systems.

I more admire the heyday of game modding. It was the perfect middleground between terrible wysiwyg and delving into Assembly to make a pong game. It took just enough skill and talent to be fun, but was easy enough to do as a hobby. And a lot of truly fun stuff came out of it that's still relevant today.

it was a guy that dropped (or finished) diploma in game design in full sail university, he also had a nasty habit of getting drunk.
i don't really remember what the argument was about but he was triggering this guy named mothdan, his point was that gamedev is useless and there is no point of going on.
so everytime sourcefam posted "progress" mothdan pulled out the drunk card and started insluting him. then sourcefam pointed out that mothdan had a unity game with store assets that he was trying to push through greenlight or something. he even had a trailer in youtube if i not mistaken.

Well, there's that Maker Space/Hacker Space concept, and there's plenty of those throughout the world. My idea is more like a dorm with a workshop, though. Some student housing places kinda-sorta try to have common spaces, but they're not full of lathes and servers, at best you'll find a public-use painting easel and some couches.

Maybe work it like, the rent is however much is typical in the area, but for 50 bucks more on a separate contract you can use the workspaces all you want, and branding any works you sell lowers the price? Maybe add some intangibles like stocked food or parties or free building materials or w/e so while your rent isn't decreased, your grocery bill is cut down and you don't have to buy your own supplies? idk. it's a pipe dream though and probably wouldn't work as a public thing

Which I think was really good.

You can hear the theme play in the game here. (it plays when the duck reaches a certain level of happiness).

>once you've got your game actually working you can freak out about trying to make it presentable.
Depends on the game but that's where I stand.
Or more precisely, getting something to work is easier than what people think. I have tons of prototypes lying around but at some point you really need to make some graphics because you can only go so far with primitives, and they're not that great to look at.

I've been looking around at all kind of programmer arts but I feel like they're not even trying so they're not really good references.

I'll eventually find something, I just need to think of it. But sometimes someone else can give you a good suggestion so this is why I'm talking about it.

my suggestion is to learn python first
statically typed languages (such as C#) tend to be harder for beginners because you have to declare all data types and understand a bit more about what they do and how they work. If you learn python first you can focus on understanding the basic premise of programming and then eventually graduate to a more useful language.

Its weird because unreal engine 4 looks so much better than cryengine 4 yet more games are made with cryengine.

Oh, I used L3DT to generate a simple mountain terrain .raw heightmap and used Photoshop to cut off the peaks at a certain height to make a flat see floor. In unity I am using the erosion tool(from the asset store) in case for changes in Unity and I want to use the erosion tool for texturing (looks fairly usefull)

I also got some terrain shader thats a bit more advanced than the standart terrain shader with alpha blending of textures and other nifty stuff but I wouldnt quite figure it out yet (most importaintly for me it makes the vertical cliff faces not streched like it normally would)

I would like to get this thing here since it gets pretty good results but its quite expensive:

Hey man. Game Maker is a pretty good starting point and is free to get started with. Id recommend you download the tutorials that are provided for GM, and just tweak the tutorial files. Add enemy types, make the player jump higher, etc. iys a good jumping off point since all the assets and such are there. Then when you feel comfortable enough, start building your own engine. This is how i git started years ago.

>>143726532
The "brute force" solution would be to introduce constraints, i.e. from the head to the tail, move each segment such that it's within a maximum distance of the one preceding it. It's really easy and it might still look good.

Browser games aren't very mobile-friendly. Save yourself the cluster headaches--that I guarantee will arise from this--and just make a native application. You can distribute an .apk via any filesharing website, bypassing Google Play/Appstore altogether, so your entire point makes no sense.

And I'm going to rephrase my question btw since any engines can do it.
Wich is the the engine that will help me get this result the easiest way possible.
Asking this because I saw a long time ago here that there was an engine that made possible to make 3D models by directly drawing them.
Wanted to know if this shit actually exists or if it was some sort of prototype.

Or just if there's something close to it.

They're just regular models with complex shaders.

tweaks to Death's intro, now with tentacles.

I feel like I'm stuck atm. I just need to make Death aniamtions for when the scores get close enough to decide a winner and then the final scene and after that I'll be able to only focus on gameplay. I still don't know what directions I want to take for the main game mode so I might upload a little demo for you guys to try out and say what you think.

Just tonight I was wondering if it would be better to constantly carry all 3 guns and be able to switch any way you want during the round, using the strong magnum for velocity gains on the ball while the shotgun would be better for when the ball is already fast as fuck and hard to snipe with one bullet.

Then there'll be the magic powerups that will apply effects on the ball...Would it be better to have single charges where you pick up the "artifact" and the next shot you take applies the effect or should I aim for a more energy-based system where you kill skeletons to fill up a bar and then choose what ability you want to use?

There's a little bit too many possibilities sometimes.

Just for a more friendly way to create 3D models of this type. I know I'll never have the patience to reach a pro level with Blender. But Anime characters are easy to draw.
They seem easier to model than realistic models of course.
But if there's an engine that will make it even easier, I want to know.

The camera can get kind of dizzying when it's tracking the player (see: any 3D Sonic game), so I tried implementing a SM64 style dead zone by making the camera tracking strength decrease as the player's transform reaches the middle of the screen. The closest I got today still left me with this odd "galloping horse" effect. Tomorrow I'll align the camera with the horizon direction by the same method, which should fix it.

live2D is, as far as I know, an animation tool, not a character creation / modeling tool.
All of the anime style characters often seen with the software are licensed from third party artists.

I don't think there is any software available right now for generating anime character models that you can use commercially.

If it's just a hobby project though, I believe there are several 3D waifu simulator games that allow customization you could probably rip models from after.

In addition to what the other guy said about the tentacles, make Death more alive. Have him breathe, move his arms a little. Give him intent. As it is now, Death kind of looks like he belongs on top of a roller coaster, not really a threat.

>>
>>143737625
There is a reason nobody really makes this sort of game.

Most of the bandwidth hogging is a result of the game design, since I'm trying to do an RTS without Deterministic Lockstep because it also has to feel good as an FPS.

Still, an unacceptable chunk is Unity's fault. UNET doesn't allow targeting specific clients with an RPC call, so tons of redundant data gets sent out and the server host even sends data over the network to itself. If that's not fixed I'm dropping UNET.

Itll be a learning experience for the player, at first they'll feel angry that they got cheated, then realize duh, what did you expect? Then ultimately realize now they have a way to move money around that isn't traceable back to them. After they get busted for buying the stolen account from their REAL account. Maybe one of the challenges of the game is how to launder dirty money back to your own person account.

Also in my game there is a central planet on the screen and the player ship can move in between 3 lanes of concentric arcs around the planet, when I am moving in between the lanes I want there to a small bullet time effect, what is the best way of achieving this? Currently I am achieving this by reducing the FPS but that seems very hacky and not good practice

Go through your code and multiply every speed or acceleration variable by a TimeScale, set initially to 1. Whenever you want to enter bullet time, lower TimeScale by like 0.5 or whatever you want.
And be sure to lerp TimeScale to that value, or it'll look jarring and less cool.

Programmer question:
I am working on roguelike style controls/movement but that support animations. There are cases where I need an actor to decide whether its going to move or attack, then wait for somebody else to finish animating before it can start. In these cases do you think its more appropriate to keep the same action going but on hold, or instead make the first action a plan action which injects whatever its actually going to do into the front of the queue?

I don't have experience with Unreal, but from my experience in Unity and knowing that Unreal has a spooky C++ garbage collector, I think there is an issue where something is being disposed while its still in use my something else, and that thing tries to access it a bunch during the shutdown sequence. This may or may not be a problem but depending on how Unreal handles it your users could be met with a "this program has stopped working" screen which is not the end of the world for them but makes you look bad.

Well I have no clue if thats why but I put in a node that says to only continue with the action if the object it pulls from the array is valid and that solved it.

Im a little concerned because I can't see a logical reason WHY it would pull an invalid item from the array while still managing to iterate through it perfectly fine but I can live with it.

There are lots of ways to use procedural generation, it doesn't have to be entire levels (Ex, textures & models (weapons, enemies, props), weapon stats, dialogue, skyboxes). You could simply uses it to add more variation to things (reducing repetitiveness, ex ground tiles).

This either means its operating on invalid data that are pointed to by the array member or the engine makers have a check for this that doesn't throw an exception. I am guessing the later at least in the Unreal editor but I would not trust it to work the same in release builds.

A lot of it is good, however, he uses the GM collision system, rather than a proper collision script which is my major complaint

His udemy course you can pirate from cgpeers uses the script, and it's older than that course, so I don't know why he did that
>>
>>143754814
To me almost every third person shooter has bad core gameplay.

That mantra that a game should be fun in blank white hallway seems to be completely disregarded in them, especially in open world ones where the mechanics are wholly trash, but people overlook it because of the world/content.

There are obviously exceptions, I love Max Payne (because they actually put effort into the gunplay) and Sleeping Dogs (because most of the combat isn't shooting).
I guess it just depends on your priorities. And whether your game has guns.

I need to redo the bricks because they get some serious acne right now.

The lightmap also looks really awful and glitchy, I know exactly why, surfaces are z-fighting with stuff that's not supposed to be visible. I should be able to fix it by clipping up all the polygons to remove the parts that are never seen, but I'll leave that for the final iteration.

Early morning progress! Added in Trap spawns. Currently only spawns magic traps, but I'll add more types.

I'm the only one that would like to have the Jams block and the Demo Days block side by side instead of one on top of the other?
They are both equally importante in my opinion.

hey, how do you spawn your enemies? i saw some getting stuck in ceilings yesterday on stream. if you're not already - you should really consider using the bottom edge of the sprite to determine the exact spawn location.

That's an incredibly badass effect for a super simple trap like that.

Still, good progress! Congrats.

Falling rocks now come in a 32x32 variety, which explodes into regular rocks.
Granted, they looked more impressive when tossed through corridors, so I might reuse them for that.
Kinda makes me regret not going for larger maps, though.

Also, recolored tileset. (Background is lighter for now just so I can see my player sprite.)

I've got depression and a tendency for procrastination, but I'm devving anyway, even though it takes me a shitload of energy. Of course my progress is very slow and I drop my games frequently, but I **always** pick them back up.

Compared to drive, desire is not a good source of energy. But it will do. So go and pick up Game Maker, follow the tutorials, and change the tutorial games around until you're confident enough to make it.
If I can do it, you can do it too, anon. Become your own hero. I believe in you!

>>143757723
Not sure I'd be a good devfriend due to spoiler related, but thank you for the offer! Do you do any retro-ish stuff?

Isn't it illegal or something to copy a game's character and or background? I noticed with the flappy bird craze, some people ripped off the pipes and background down to the details while just changing the bird. While others literally ripped off the bird while changing everything else

How did they not get in trouble? Legit dev question because I want to clone a character design

>How did they not get in trouble?
Because some chink ripped off a previous game and he was already making $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Nor would he want to waste that $ taking a foreigner to court.

Also mobile dev is like straya in the 70's.

>>143762525
what do I put then? keep in mind my game is 3d
>>
>>143764645
>what do I put then?
Nothing.
Or if you have to "Move."

Let your designs do their job.
Undermining them with immersion breaking text is lazy and I hate that it became a norm.

>>143763805
Working on a background the last thing I had to do. I guess I'll spend the rest of the day testing to see if I find any weird bug and will upload it late at night.

The enemies are spawned using preset spawn points that are at an average height so ground and air enemies can spawn at them and be useful. The glitch you saw has been fixed - the enemies will search for an open location above or below them if they spawn in the wall ;)

>>143762194
