Just got Attila from a friend for my birthday today. I've seen you guys talk about it a lot, but do you have any essential tips?

I love total war but am not particularly good at them so any useful hints for attila would be nice since I know its harder than the other games.

For provinces, focus on these things first:
Food
Sanitation
Public Order
Economy.

Unless you're a barbar, not every province needs to be a military production province. I say "unless you're a barbar" because barbarian factions get military units from their food and public order buildings.

Provinces will have one or two resources sometimes (though sometimes a province will have no special resources). Open up the building browser and find that resource and look at the last building(s) in the chain so you can potentially plan your economy around it.

You might start with wheat farms since it produces the most food, but climate change will make it so wheat is worthless. Goats, I believe, are the best food production after climate change. Or maybe it was cattle? I cannot remember.

Christian religions (except Eastern Christianity) cost money. Other religions (usually) cost food. As climate change occurs, you'll probably want to switch to Christianity to conserve as much food as possible.

Huns and White Huns lower morale of Christian armies by 10. Be careful.

Jesus Christ the Danes are motherfucking unstoppable in multiplayer in AoC.

Not only did I get steamrolled facing off against a Danes player as Asturias, but I got steamrolled by the AI when I replicated the match in custom battle to try a different build! Ditto for the Lombards.

I'm usually a fan for the changes that AoC introduced to combat, but is it really fair having a faction that pretty much wins the second they get into melee?

I did, but even the basic spearman in a spaghetti line can ruin Royal Knights. Even their paper-armoured axe troops can ruin cavalry if they get them bogged down (which they will, because if you try to withdraw the cav instantly dies).

Buying any kind of high-tier infantry is even more worthless, since the axes completely negate their armour. My 950g heavy inf were the first to die in the entire army!

The only feasible way I can see of countering Danes is just having half your army be archers and kiting the shit out of them with some supporting cav to harass.

With ERE I converted to Greco roman paganism. The sanitation bonus and extra cash at the beginning really helped me to get things rolling. By the late game, though, shit was getting messed up with food only just sufficient in most provinces. I didn't have to deal with the -10 morale, though.

As WRE Latin Christianity has extra osmosis power so I'm thinking of demolishing the churches first but then rebuilding later once I have so extra dosh.

I played WRE on hard but i found that if you can take all of Mauretania early, than you can easily hold Mauretania and africa.

I also found that a good front is Auitania and Narbonensis Liguria and Venetia.

Aquitania can fairly easily be defended by an army and a fleet while the other 3 can be defended easily with one army.

Think it's time to hang up my Lakhmid campaign.

Everything was going fine, consolidating Aethopia and Arabia. Then the Sassanids attacked me, so i took Edessa, Antoichia and Ctiesphon.

A civil war has just broken out, taking Himyar and Antiochia ( my only Mediterranean port so trade has been cut off ) Judea has just declared war on me. Everyone is at war with me. My armies fight off two stacks in one battle, but a third comes from nowhere, out of a selection of 14 factions to send armies to me.

I can fall all the way back and build up again from scratch but thinking, i've had my fun on this campaign and time to try something else.

Any recommendations?

There is this strategy called kiting, and its the bane of that army. Refuse a frontline engagement. Shoot them until you cant shoot anymore, THEN attack. Against an infantry heavy army, dont give them what they want, simply hammer into their weakness and dont charge until every single missile is spent. Reminds me of rtw tourneys where they eventually banned more than 2 horsearchers because said strategy would absolutely crush any army with a weak missile contingient. Once fought a 50 minute battle as macedon where I finally won after he had spent every single missile and then charged my last pikewall, which i had managed to get to a corner, and barely won with my unit almost dead. For 50 minutes he kited and denied me the engagement I wanted, if he brought one more missile unit he would have won easily, thankfully it was against the golden 2 ha limit.

The standing army by the end of the mongol wars was 1.5 million for china and 500,000 for the mongols. They sent 20-40k to eastern europe, 30-50k to central asia, thats it. Might have picked up more recruits along the way but thats it.

Can any proud independent Romans give me some battle tips for the WRE in Attila? Just picked it up the other day and struggling with the battles, I win most of them but I take horrendous casualties in the process and considering pretty much the entire world is at war with me my armies don't have time to recover before the next barbarians come storming over the borders.

Still very early game and I'm mainly using comistanses (or whatever they're called) spears and a few skirmishes and light cav. I'd like some more cav but they seem hard to recruit in my border regions as they're not setup for it. The comistanses apparently all have heavy armour but they still seemed to get badly mauled by the Germanic spear bands even though they eventually beat them. Are there any specific tactics that are good to try and keep Roman casualties down?
