OK! HERE WE GO!

(pre warning, I have 9 pictures that will be accompanying this review, please mods and janitors, forgive me. Im not spamming on purpose or to troll, just being thorough.)

Lepin 16007 "Monster Fighters Mansion"

We got this set from Aliexpress for around $65-$70 including shipping, shipped by DHL. If you are going to order ANYTHING from Ali-X and have the option to have it shipped DHL, fucking DO IT. The set shipped from mainland china to Michigan in around only FOUR DAYS. Compared to the weeks to sometimes MONTHS it takes for regular orders shipped through china post, the extra cost is worth it, especially for big sets like any of the current modulars or UCS sets that Lepin are bootlegging.

We ordered it without the original box, as that always seems to add another $20+ to the cost, not really sure why. We DID choose the "simple box" option that some stores on Ali-X offer, as it was only a couple dollars extra, and to me was much safer than the soft packaging I have seen others post pics of their knockoffs coming in. The box was medium-ish and had probably around 20 sealed bags shoved into it. The bags were NOT numbered but they did seem to have some semblance of sorting done to them (most of the sand green bricks were all in one bag for example.). While this might seem like a nightmare, especially for such a large set, honestly it wasnt that bad at all once I got into the swing of building it. I just separated the pieces by size and some by type (the roof bricks all together, the sand green pieces all together, etc.) and went to work.

The pieces themselves are definitely on par with lego quality. The plastic FEELS a little different, but they locked together very nicely, and even official lego parts lock with them really well. I didnt have any broken, mismolded or bent up pieces like I have seen some people report on other sites, blogs and videos, but YMMV. The only pieces that I do have a little concern over are the hinge pieces, especially the plate hinges. They came seperated, unlike their lego counterparts, and fit together VERY loosely (one set of them didnt even snap together, just kind of fit together.), but honestly for what is a
VERY expensive set to try and source officially, a couple pieces needing replacing is a small price to pay IMO. The colors of the parts seem to match pretty well with official lego colors.

The instructions that came with the set are pretty much a copy of the actual instructions that came with the official set, which is nice because that means you can just bring up the official instructions from the lego site and use those. The funny thing is that the Lepin instructions removed the pictures of the numbered bags in them. Kind of funny that they bothered to do even that.

Missing pieces?

Heres something that was a little odd and funny. I DID end up missing three pieces. What two of them were is whats strange. My set didnt come with the two brown bushes that go on the outside of the mansion. I didnt really care as I plan on doing a nice 32x32 base with a small backyard and a backyard wall for it anyways, so it wasnt a big miss for me. The third missing piece, and this was funny, was a single 2x4 plate, one of the LAST pieces needed to finish the roof at the end of the build. It DID come with two extra 1x4 plates, so it wasnt really a loss at all!

The minifigures.

OK, heres where the quality takes a little dip.

The printing on said figures is good, no smudges or misprints that I can see (correct me if im wrong by seeing the attached pic of said figures, I dont have the OG set or figs to compare...).

The glow in the dark pieces dont glow very well and dont have the "UV charge" capabilities as official lego glow pieces do (UV Charge: if you have access to a black light and any lego pieces that glow in the dark, for example, Brick Daddies head from the Lunar Limo set, hold it in blacklight for a minute and then take it away. It will glow even if it isnt dark.)

I had to replace the zombie chefs legs with official lego legs as they were VERY loose and swung freely.

The two ghosts were the worst offenders of the quality dip, as youll see in the pics. Their ghost....cowls? hoods? clothing? is fucked up. The hole inside it where the minifig head slots in is too long, so the clothing sits way too high. It causes the ams to pop out of their sockets if you try to move them too high. I even cut and shaved off the neck of the ghosts blank black heads (I know, ultimate heresy, but I would only perform that surgery on a bootleg piece, never an official.) and the clothing STILL sits too high.

Lady Vampyres hair is NOT based on the original mold that came with the OG version. In fact, it is a mold I do NOT recognize and could not find ANYTHING similar on bricklinks list of hair pieces. Anyone recognize it? Could it be a copy of some third party piece?

Lord Vampyres cape is VERY flimsy. Its even cheaper than the starched paper shit lego uses for their own capes and is very thin.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I would DEFINITELY suggest this set for SURE to anyone who wants the haunted mansion but doesnt want to take out a second mortgage to get one. The quality is very good, the pieces fit together perfectly and the colors are good. Even the few little gripe I had are all things that are easily replaced, especially if lego is your thing and you have a decent collection of bits already. The minifigs might not fully be up to snuff, but again, easy fix. And honestly, for the cost, treat it as if you bought a used lego version of the set for a pittance because it didnt come with any figures.

Now does this reflect good on Lepins OTHER modular/UCS/big sets knockoffs? I myself dont know, but after throwing some cash to the wind and giving it a try, I am for sure going to grab several more of their offerings and well see how well they stand up. I have the Green Grocer, Imperial Navy ship, Grand Emporium and Emerald Express next on my list, but they
probably wont get to me untill after christmas. But I promise for sure that I will do a similar review for each one of those sets as well so if any of you anons on /lg/ are on the fence, you can get an unbiased, real opinion from one of your own.

Final Score: 8/10

NP NP guys, I just hope an over zealous janitor doesnt wander into the thread and think I was spamming and hit me with the ban hammer.

And yeah, Lepin is hitting it out of the park right now it seems, they have even unveiled two of FOUR "in house" MOC modulars that they are releasing (they are copied off random peoples MOC modular buildings.). One is a combo Starbucks/Barnes and Noble bookstore, and the other is a dinosaur museum. They show pics of the other two modulars, but I dont know what they are yet as they havent shown up on ali-X yet. Also, sadly, the prices for the in-house ones are pretty high right now, but I think thhat because only a small amount of stores have them available right now. Give it a month or so for every store on ali to get ahold of them, and they will go down in price.
>>
>>5974380
Ah well I'm sure you have plans to improve that! What do you think the odds are that Lego will ever make a mold like those studded pieces holding the cockpit together? Slim to none?
>>
>>5974382
The other two modulars they ripped are here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/redcokid/7897170880/in/album-72157630631915282/
http://legogenre.com/international-hotel-cool-lego-modular-building/
more pics: http://brickset.com/article/23889/lepin-now-ripping-off-afol-designs

Apparently they downscaled the university. The original was on a 48 x 48 baseplate, but the bootleg is on a 32 x32. I'm having a hard time seeing where they cut pieces though, they might have just scaled it in photoshop.

The new modulars are each 3-4k pieces, so the prices won't drop too far. Expect maybe $100-150?

I think, maybe, distant possibility. Lego's been giving us better and better pieces.

Not that anon, but sadly, probably never. Other companies have had similar "stud on both sides" pieces for YEARS, and lego has never made the logical leap.

>>5974391
OH SHIT, thanks anon. Fuck, if the knockoff of the university is as detailed as that one on the inside, itll be worth a hundo to me. Also, I dont know if parts count matters. Ive seen some of the two different super star destroyers and the taj mahal in the $70 range on there, also the UCS falcon.

im getting back into lego after a 1-2 year stint of being poor as fuck (and obviously depressed i cant buy toys for myself)
is just going through the entirety of bricklink/brickset per year/month pretty much the easiest way to see every set i missed?
i purposely stayed out of lego sites and threads, because i knew looking at them would just make me spend money i didnt have yet, but now im regretting it, because now i have to make a potentially massive "fuck me, i missed this set" list
>>
>>5974387
So you know they have prototypes of all this shit in their vault, right? They could start production next month if they wanted to.

The issue I've heard is that kids don't expect to build like that, they only understand studs up.

why wouldn't part count matter? The cost to Lepin is directly proportional to the part count. I've noticed that they do roughly follow original lego msrp, at about 40%

I'm the anon that was talking G about Heroica a thread or two ago. Took a gamble on a "for parts" Fortaan on ebay for like $20. Turns out it was only missing two pieces and has a few extras. It was the only heroica set I didn't have. Now I just need to get all the other ones from my parents' house. I think I have some people I can convince to play.

I finally went to a LEGO store last weekend, never knew there was one a few hours from me. It was a small one in a mall, a little underwhelming, but nice.

The build-a-fig stand was extremely limited. They only had 6-10 different bodies and legs to chose from. I kind of expected more than that, but maybe they rotate.

Still it was cool, I regret not getting the mug.

>dont blame lego

Sorry, but at the end of the day, lego KNOWS they could stop the knockoff shit very easily. Just re-release the sets. They know there is an obvious market for them as people are buying the knockoffs in droves and arent even hiding the fact anymore (like I said earlier, I LOVE seeing the asspain in the comments of that page talking about how "scummy" lepin is for knocking off MOCs. And I love that there are at least people in there telling everyone to fuck off and saying the same thing, if lego wants to beat the competition, they need to become more competitive.). Soon enough lego will have to figure it out, even if its the hard way.

And I got no sympathy for them when they do shit like re-release the damned death star with little to no changes in it but a $100 markup (and thats just in the burgerbux market. I shudder to think how bad the markup is for aussie friends or eastern bloc euro friends. Shit, im sure even our cucked friends to the north in canadia are suffering the markup.).

Free market all the way. Adapt or die.
>>
>>5975847
I think TLG is aware that the vast, vast majority of people who buy their products are completely unaware that clone brands even exist, much less about where to find them.
>>
>>5975847
Well, I agree with them needing to re release sets, and I'm buying some lepin shit myself, but the costs they have is also due to the creative development and shit they do for the sets. Its not the free market if they're just blatantly stealing a lot of the hard part of making these sets and the appeal of the very good designs (i mean, look at the knock off lego sets designs and you can see the quality drop)
But lego really has a huge advantage in the name brand recognition and the fact that even a lot of AFOL are oblivious to the knock offs or are too brand loyal to care
Really I don't see much problem with them re making cancelled sets, but when they are making rip offs of current sets I don't like it. And there's no point in justifying it. It's wrong, but its not that big of a deal (yet)
>>
>>5975847
Canada here, I got my Legos catalog today actually and the new Death Star is $599.99 Cdn...
>>
>>5975869
Really though, there IS NO quality drop. The bricks are pretty much spot on, the colors are spot on, as I said in my review, only the figs were really of lower quality.

>>5975863
That was before idiots like eurobricks started covering these sets, now the cats out of the bag. Also im sure im not the only one out there extolling the virtues of lepins current offerings. And not just lepin, but companies like enlighten for some of their sets and their unique pirate line and SY and POGO for their really good figures.

>>5975881
Whats that in american fun bux? Last I had seen, your guys currency was in free fall for a little while. Glad shit did finally stabilize for you poutine-bros though. Never had a problem with canadians, always very friendly whenever ive met them IRL.
>>
>>5975847
First off, I'm with you on the free market aspect, and I'm rooting for Lepin here. However, here are a few explanations for Lego's actions:

1. They have to take legal action. If they don't it could set a precedent that they don't care about their IP.
2. Obviously, they can't afford to release their entire back catalog. There is limited space in their factories and warehouses. This is a strawman, though.
3. They COULD rerelease all old modulars and expensive Star Wars sets, but they don't have that much of an incentive to. Most of the potential buyers have had a chance while the set was in stores for a 2-5 year period. Releasing would make some current owners angry. Resellers mostly, but some owners who don't plan to resell derive some satisftaction from owning a $1000 retired set.
4. The high resale values of old sets contribute to the perceived value of new sets. You know that in 4-6 years, when Assembly Square retires, it will start its slow climb to $1000 or more. Modulars and UCS are advertised, explicitly or implicitly, as exclusive and limited.
5. Current owners of the modulars actually feel threatened. They bought into something, and now the implicit deal they made is broken.
6. Magic the gathering has had a similar nearly decade long boom period, with old cards shooting up in value. Some of the cards needed to play (Tarmogoyf in Modern) are $150 to $200 (you need 4 btw). I've heard these same arguments, "why can't Wizards just release all these old cards to lower prices?", and the answer is because it goes against the interests of both the company and current owners, while only pleasing potential new customers.

THE GREAT HALLOWEEN SPOOKY GIRL GIVEAWAY CONTEST

is halfway over after only a thread and a half!

Everyone in the Lego General has the chance to win their very own mint-in-bag Spooky Girl! Just make a Halloween-related MOC and take a picture of it (with timestamp) and post it in this thread along with an email. Once ten people have entered or the contest deadline hits, the one that makes me laugh the most will win a free Spooky Girl!

This contest is open to everyone in the world, but it ends at midnight on Sunday, October 23 to make sure the winner gets their Spooky Girl before Halloween!

>>
>>5975888
I think the greater consensus is it doesn't really improve on the original to the point of costing more, I mean it only has a couple hundred more pieces for a hundred dollar jump, did inflation hit that hard in just 8 years?
>>
>>5975883
>eurobricks
Again, the vast majority of Lego's audience doesn't know about this. They buy their Legos at TRU and Target. AFOLs are a relatively insignificant market (and even more so the people on Eurobricks and /lg/) that can probably be discounted completely if TLG snags the rights to whatever cool new kids' product comes out next year.

Don't get me wrong, I am perfectly fine with bootlegs and would be happy if it was the kick in the butt that Lego needed to get back on their A-game, but it probably won't happen anytime soon.
>>
>>5975892
Oh, believe me, I KNOW lego isnt going to win this one. Many other companies just dont even bother when it comes to china and knockoffs because they know by the time they even go before a judge for initial hearings and shit, the company will have mysteriously vanished and three other "companies" will appear with new names selling the same shit. Not to mention the chinese government doesnt give a fuck, as long as they are making money.

But yeah, I figure we betterr stop this convo before the whiners and anti-fun brigade pop up bitching about bootlegs and board culture...

I'm sorry, but your logic is really flawed. I myself have no problem with companies stealing lego's brick designs and coming up with their own sets. However I have a problem with them stealing the set designs from lego.

Just think about a different economy: books. Two authors write two different stories (sets) with the same letters (bricks). That's okay and totally normal. If however one author steals another authors story and sells it as his own I'd call him morally bankrupt and would definitely want such behaviour stopped, as it is hurting creative freedom, something every afol should feel is wrong since our hobby is based on said creative freedom.

I especially dislike lepin stealing people's mocs (unless they have given their consent), since they can defend themselves even less than lego in this case.

If the knockoff companies would design their own sets, i'd have no problem in buying them (infact i own multiple non lego sets as i like to compare knockoff qualities to lego). But i would never buy a knockoff design, since i feel it undermines what our hobby is all about.

I don't know about minifig of the year, but for set it's the corner deli. Love the colors and the design of that thing. Hopefully that townhouse in the creator line will be just as good next year.

>>5976531
I don't have really have any big issues with knockoffs producing sets that Lego haven't got in production (when it comes to current sets I'm more in your department) as that mostly fucks scalpers over and not Lego themselves, and scalpers can go fuck themselves. My biggest issue is when stuff like Lepin start copying people's MOCs.

While I really want some of the previous modulars, I don't care for a knock-off. I do want it, but I'd rather just spend my money on something else instead. Not like I buy a lot of Lego in the first place.

I'm torn on the dentist/dentists practice.
The minifig looks great. But the practice it's self looks too open. Like I can just imagine the dentist working on someone's teeth, telling them they have really bad cavities and then getting the patient to admit that maby they eat too many sweets, while the next patient sits waiting and listening. Then the phone rings and the dentist leaves them with their mouth opened, tooth half filled/drilled, while he answers it. It's just too opened. Even odder is that you apparently have to go through the practice to get to the photographers studio.
Also, I've already made myself a dentist's practice, so having two might be a bit of over kill.

So if I buy this modular (what do I mean if, I'm defiantly going to get it), I'll probably change the dentists practice and just make it an extension of the photographers studio.

I never responded to myself. Look at the post times; it's about a half hour too late for me to want to reply to myself. Is it that hard to acknowledge that people do dislike bootlegs?

And how the fuck is it trolling? It's the Lego general and yet I get bitched at for asking why there's Lepin in the Lego general? Fucking christ.

Wheelchair basketball court.

I need a court (using the Pirates chess set as base, plus some other pieces) as well as at least ten brick-built sports wheelchairs (having trouble with those) and five players for each side (using the same body piece within teams, but different faces and hairpieces).

Dat nigga needs some big ass HORNS on his head. Also a mane of hair going down the back of his head into his back wouldnt hurt either, other than that, looks good!

>not just buying TFA Falcon

Also I didn't know that Bricklink sold cats
>>
>>5977993
I used to have the TFA Falcon but it fell apart and quite a few parts broke and even more went missing, so I decided to buy this one since it was cheaper and came with some minifigures I didn't have yet.

>>5977996
Fair enough, I suppose. Don't drop that one.

Also the Rogue Shadow is a fucking mess of a set
>>
>>5977999
I mostly got the Rogue Shadow for the battle-damaged Darth Vader, but Jang's review of it didn't make the ship look too bad.
>>
Does anyone know approx. when the Ghost Rider set will retire, and/or when the best time to buy it is?
>>
>>5978005

not any time in the next 2-3 years, and the best time to buy it is any time you've got 20 burgers on you

Use two 2x2 turntable plates, one on either side?
If it won't fit at any angle, then you may have an issue but try the standard 90, 45, 22.5 11.25 etc first before giving up

I don't have a flickr or anything like that. But i'm pretty much always browsing the general here if you have questions. Didn't see your post because i had to finish an assignment for uni.
It's an old pic, but i have it pretty much intact in my closet right now if you want details.
