For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

SD Group Build

Rules:
Pick up an SD anything, plane, Gundam/other MS, whatever, if it's generally an SD it counts (so I hope to see someone do a D-Style). Obviously, per all group builds, you'll want to paint it.

Submissions:
Email it to [email protected]
USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL ADDRESS

Due Date: November 1st

Good news! A kind anon has purchased some prizes for the group build. He has decided to do a random drawing rather than judge them like I did in the previous group build. Winners will be contacted via email.

For those curious, I intend to start the secret Santa signups on October 1st.

The RG RX-78-2 is a grenade at times, it was the first of its kind in the series, later on thry become better, like the MKII, exia, wing etc

RGs are meant to look good posed, not to play with btw

HGs have more playability

>pour type gundam markers (you clean it with lighter fluid and qtips)

Different anon here. I'm going to start painting my kits soon, are pour type markers okay to use for painted kits too or are they recommended just for straight builds? Also, what is the paint base on them? From the lighter fluid tip I'm guessing enamel?
So basically is there any difference between them and a regular enamel wash? It seems like they're less hassle.
>>
>>5907861
I'm not 100% sure what type of paint they are, but enamel is a good guess. Also, I've never had good luck with them on painted kits oddly enough. Either I wasn't waiting long enough or something, because they never came out nicely.
>>
>>5907916
Thanks for your answer. I'm assuming your attempts on painted kits were on top of a gloss coat, right? What exactly went wrong?

Getting paints where I live can be a hassle, but getting enamels even more so (only acrylics are readily available). Off the top of my head I think I can only get Humbrol and Ravell enamels here. I know they're not very popular paints for gunpla, but will they work for panel lining?
>>
>>5907919
Yeah, it was over gloss coat. And the only thing I can think of is that the coat wasn't completely dry or not thick enough. I haven't really experimented much with it recently. There is also a guide to using acrylics for panel lining in the guide, and it's not like you can't just remove the paint if you don't like how it looks.
>>
>>5907920
> There is also a guide to using acrylics for panel lining in the guide
I'm going to be painting with acrylics (Tamiya and Vallejo, probably) and I was planning on using future to gloss coat, so I was under the impression that doing panel washes with acrylics wouldn't work due to damaging the coat below.

I guess I'll try both the pour type markers and Ravell or Humbrol enamels and see what works best, unless you have any other advice.
>>
>>5907921
That suggestion was just if you're not painting, if you can get the pour types they should work.
>>
>>5907679
You have posted this same thing at least once in the last 3 or 4 threads.
>>
>>5907708
What are you even doing here?
>>
>>5907679
>was he right?
It's probably not the hardest kit for beginners, but it definitely not beginner friendly. Since it was the first RG, it has issues that were worked out in new RG kits. It also has enough fiddly bits and gimmicks that bandai basically upscaled it for the MG RX-78-2 3.0
>should I give this another try?
If you mean the RG RX-78 specifically? I wouldn't, but it's your money. If you mean another model? I would say yes. Most gunpla aren't nearly as bad as the RG RX-78. If you want to do another RG, the Mk.II is arguably the best of the line. If you want something simpler/less expensive, Gyan revive and any of the IBO kits are beginner friendly kits.
Now stop posting your sob story every thread and go build some models or something
>>
Probably a stupid question, but how do you guys deal with the autism of watching series/ buying kits? I always look at cool kits on the shelf but i often leave them there cause i have no Story background on it and I always end up buying IBO/ unicorn/ g reco sets cause are the only series I watchedand I don't have time to keep up with everything.
>>
So I've been wanting to get a hyaku shiki for a while now. The problem is a lot of them are that chromed yellow, which is nice but I'd rather get one that's flat yellow so I can paint it. Any one have any recommendations?

The Hyaku Shiki and Re-GZ will need much more paint applications to look accurate to the box art. The BB Senshi will need some apps too, but theyre not as ornate and need major detail work as the Sen/Sangokuden kits.

The Knight Gundam actually looks pretty nice even as just a snap build.

Should I thin these guys? When I tried the matte on a spoon it resulted in small white particles so I'm pretty sure that one needs thinning, but I've heard gloss varnish doesn't have such particles and is just one uniform layer. Any tips?
>>
>>5909356
The white particles in the matte are what makes it matte and if they're showing up on the surface it generally means it's not mixed properly.

I think generally it's advised that you not thin varnishes because it can weaken their protective properties, but a lot of people do when they're airbrushing because unthinned varnishes can be really difficult to spray.
>>
>>5909358
Well, it sprayed alright when I tried so I guess I'll just have to shake the bottle a bunch and see if it turns out alright.
>>
>>5909356
Yes, you need to thin vallejo varnishes. They are far too thick straight out of the bottle and won't level properly if you don't. Just add a little water if you're airbrushing and let the parts sit a couple days before final assembly and you should be good.

Near Flawless. Absolutely perfect color separation, so if you're not the painting kind, you're gonna get an accurate depiction no matter what.

The only Issue I'd say is with the waist, there's no sort of crunch. Merely a swivel that is very limited. Additionally, the head MAYBE gets 15 degrees of movement side-to-side.

Other than that, it's everything a guntank kit should be, which I suspect is why we'll never need a revive. Got it right the first time.

Is it okay to use cheap acrylics for general plamo stuff? I'm just starting out and I think I'd be wasting it if I got expensive paints while not knowing what I'm doing. The problem using cheap acrylics is that they their pigments are too large, making it hard to get a good, even, streak free finish, even after multiple coats. You can give it a try if you want, but generally you'll either end up with a streak filled mess or a >thin your paints

I wasn't terribly interested in collecting them since there were only four, but are there any good robot models of a similar size (about 4 to five inches tall) that are part of a larger range? I can't really get excited for a small figurine set unless it feels like it has some heft to it.

So, got into gunpla a month ago. This is my second try at panel lining. I' ve read in the guide that the second big step is top coat? Where do I start?
>>
>>5910045
25 lol
>>
>>5910059
Well you talk like a fucking 12 year old
>>
>>5910056
I like Tamiya flat (TS-80). Other people swear by Mr. Super Clear. Others use Testors. Ultimately, flat finish looks best overall for most kits. Some kits look nice with a satin or gloss finish, but it all depends on the kit, paint scheme, and so on.
Generally speaking, when using a topcoat over lines and bare plastic, people are talking about flat.
>>
>second big step
It's more like the first big step considering panel lining is baby steps

>Where do I start
Buy what ever matte coat you want (Tamiya, Mr. Hobby, Testor's), buy a mask and filters, find a place to spray, and just do it
>>
>>5910059
are you a grill?
>>
So I feel like this is a pretty silly question but I was wondering, if I'm planning on painting a kit at what point to I apply paint? Straight off the sprue? Or would that compromise parts fitting? Also do gunpla kits need priming?
>>
>>5910275
Do not paint while on the runners, it will end up looking awful. You should be priming if you're painting. Read the guide.
>>
>>5910275
Read the guide.
>>
>>5910283
The guide is bad, m8.
>>
>>5910280
>>5910283
I've had a look over the guide, though bits of it are certainly helpful there are just a few bits that felt a little bit unclear. Essentially my plan is to paint a 1/144 Graze Custom up with a few extra markings/ware ect. Maybe I missed it but I didn't really see anywhere talking about when in the process I should apply paint. I'd assume once everything is off the sprue but before assembly.
>>
Hey guys, what's the best epoxy/CA for gluing resin parts to plastic?

Is there a particular brand I should look for, or can I just run down to Wal-Mart and grab some Gorilla Epoxy?
>>
>>5909478

>Monotone colour scheme is almost always boring.
>Some of the white looks painted and some looks like bare plastic.
>Decals look like a brand sponsorship.
>Autism pillow.

You can do better anon.

That is perfect, thanks man!
>>
Madness is getting to the VERY end of a kit, only to realize you're missing ONE SINGLE PIECE. Fuck!
>>
>>5910301
It was a definite laze job
I just painted the green and clear parts, I left the white because I was too lazy.
It was meant to be a car inspired paint job, since I based it off the Trueno, I stuck those decals on it.
But yeah it was a shitty job desu, I ran out of top coat anyways, and I just lost motivation in the middle of it.
>>
>>5910300

More or less any will do, I tend to steer clear of gorilla glue because some have a weird rubberising agent in. But other than that any CA glue or two part epoxy will do the job. For epoxy make sure you get one that allows enough working time and mix it twice as much as you need. For CA glue make sure you grab some kicker or you'll be holding parts forever waiting for shit to dry.
>>
>>5910307

Let that be a lesson then anon. If you get burned out, put it down, do something else, come back to it when you can give it the attention it deserves.
>>
>>5910314

Ah, cool. Thanks.

The best part of this, is had anon read the guide they would have found the link to the site that has this chart. It's really early in the guide too.
But hey, spoonfeeding wins every time. People just say they have read it, they never actually read it, follow links, etc.
>>
>>5910318
Definitely. The only "excuse" I have is my in general burnt out, growing disinterest of the hobby in general.
The "magic" just disappeared one night, and I had just bought the airbrush to try and actually do something.

I'm gonna be the odd man out and say that you did pretty well.

I think you're well aware of the problems with it, but I get what you were going for, and it's not a bad idea.

Might consider adding some misc. white mobile suit decals to give it more of a giant robot look because as it is now, it just looks like a branded action figure.

The "dobergun" is actually the ground types cannon if you look closely, and the head crest is most likely scratchbuilt given its thickness. The thrusters are either from the G-bouncer/G-xiphos or those pod things from that bf motorcycle kit. I can't tell.

The chest vents are just scribed straight onto the armor.

He promised to pay for his airfare, etc. but did not deliver despite having an entrance fee for his event (only, since the other 2 events are free) AND after soliciting kits and money from the sponsors.

>minor hand tremors
That's not acceptable.

Speaking of which, and toxicity of materials, the /tg/ WIP thread is full of people with hand tremors and nerve damage and can't into safety.

Most people playing /tg/ related stuff do not paint at all and of those that do only a fraction use an airbrush or products with strong solvents. Combined with the fact that the biggest name company has such a cultlike stranglehold on a lot of them, they don't look outside what that company provides and as such most /tg/ related painters are years behind other types of scale modellers.

The people selling crushed glass to use as snow some years ago was pretty funny though.
>>
>>5912518

That is frighteningly accurate. A coworker of mine drank the kool-aid on that one years ago. I've been weaning him off of it slowly over the past couple years thankfully, but every now and again I see a relapse and go WTF dude.
>>
>>5912518
>Most people playing /tg/ related stuff do not paint at all and of those that do only a fraction use an airbrush or products with strong solvents
what are you talking about? I paint /tg/ shit all the time, by hand, using vallejo and other water based acrylics. most of /tg/ shits all over airbrush painters and doesn't use laquers or enamels, which are the two harshest paints I can think of, which /toy/, /m/, and loads of model builders do use. seriously, have you ever been to /tg/ and looked in their wip thread? all hand painted

id say there is a difference mindset for people who build models for a game and people you build a model to look good. though i thought they just hand painted with citidel paint or whatever its called

ive also been to my fair share of /tg/ related event, they dont seem to be the types to take care of themselves too much.

>>
>>5912628
When I first started building the army, it was out of a friends game shop, which was a third party tabletop gaming store.

He ended up closing due to bad debts, so I moved my hobby to the closest GE. At first it was fine, the then manager liked my design, but it was taken over by someone else and when I tried to play the army at a Rogue Trader tournament, despite being by the rules of WYSIWYG, the new manager said it was too offensive to allow there. When I tried to complain that it was rule compliant, he banned me. And sent a message to the other store in town to extend my ban there, claiming I was a disruptive customer
>>
>>5912637
What a dick.
>>
>>5912637
So you can have gorey figures with guts everywhere, half nakid shit, and totally-not-niggers-orcs, but a christmas themed army is offensive?
>>
>>5912641
A lot of the other players at the store shared the same mentality, which is when I realized, if you're in a GW store and playing WH40k, you're probably an autist. Fantasy players, not so much, just the 40k ones
>>
>>5912637
have you just tried talking to the other stores and explaining the situation? or they all autistic. what was so offensive about it
>>
>>5912647
So as >>5912573 was saying, most 40k players in general are severely autistic about their canon color schemes and hate fun. Also I maaaay have created a custom primarch based on Jesus, since that's the whole point of modern Christmas
>>
>>5912652
so you had a guy look at jesus, i cant imagine warhammer fags being pc. ive always wanted to get into 40k, but i hear stories like this and it kills interest. guys in the other gunpla thread are brainstormimg a gunpla game. if we could get gelgoog guy and some /tg/ fags, maybe we could make something.
>>
>>5912664
The main reason to not get into 40k is that the game is insanely bad and GW are an awful company.
>>
>>5912664
I actually even made two /tg/ specific models once. One of a Pretty Marine with Power Rapier, and the other an Angry Marine with a Power Fuck Stick. Lost the pics of them though and sold them
>>
>>5912669
This mostly. The rules have been fucked backwards since 5th Ed and GW keeps jacking kit pricing. A $30 kit from 7 years ago is $55 today
>>
>>5912669
>>5912676
why can we just make our own /gunpla/ game then?
>>
>>5912694
Too big mainly. SD-size is basically the upper limit for a good game.
>>
>>5912702
couldnt you combat that with just having less units and faster games?
>>
>>5912676
$55 and now likely made out of plastic rather than metal.

Their costs are lower and their prices are outrageous.

Rather than becoming a cheaper game and expanding they want to hold on to this premium product image without doing any of the things that make their product a premium product.

What I paid for all my old warhammer fantasy armies, I'd be lucky if that would buy me half those models today.
>>
Bought a second Amazing Red Warrior. Gonna paint it. Should it be based on the Full Armor Gundam colors, G3 Colors, or Original gundam colors?
>>
>>5912707
There's just not much you can do that's interesting game-wise with a couple of HG or MG sized models on a regular sized table. That's why basically any other game that includes giant robots uses a smaller scale.
>>
>>5912725
You could probably get a decent game going on a 6x4 or even a 6x3 playfield, maybe even just 4x4 with HGs, but MGs are out.
>>
>>5912672
Angry Marines are pretty hilarious, juvenile it may be. I'll paint one of my spess muhreens I got from the citadel starter paint set in their colors.

>>5912578
>The big fucks are always expensive, but you can get really creative with some of the miniatures.
And usually the paints their using aren't super adhesive or anything, so you can usually just soak them in paint stripper.

Physical remodeling however is going to get less drastic the higher up you go, mostly because you have few options to begin with for a kits' armaments and what not, so you might as well be scratch building at that point.

The Chapter House suit also didn't help things, as Games Workshop will no longer produce rules for Units they don't actually make Models of.

Seconded, you don't eve know the half of it anon.

I used to work for them as a store manager. I worked in retail beforehand quite a bit before I got my degree, mostly selling electronics so I worked for some really shitty places that were all about hard-selling extended warranties and other garbage people don't want. GW was by far the most pressurised hard-selling shady environment I've ever worked in. You were quite literally targeted on everything. Give a demo to some random kid and you're targetted on selling him a starter kit. Sold the starter kit and you're targeted on selling him paints with it. Someone walks through the door, you're targeted on how quickly you start bothering them. They had a £15 minimum transaction target so if kids just wanted pots of paint you grew to fucking hate them. They even had rules surrounding what to say to people, and they regularly mystery shopped you to make sure you were doing it, and this is a tiny subsection of their targets.

So we have a shop with a huge number of targets and you were expected to hit them all and maintain the shop. it's displays, your own army and learn any new rules. Meanwhile prices were constantly rising, rules and kits were decreasing in quality, and to top it off you were acting as daycare, making sure that the little tards didn't drink the paint and break all the gaming boards. We even had one woman who would regularly leave her giant manchild 30+ year old son with some kind of severe autism in the shop on his own while he ran fucking riot chasing kids around like he was one. And speaking of man children, the regulars (i.e the 16+ year old regulars) I don't know what it is about GW stores that attracts people who don't know how to shower, but you don't even know what suffering is until you've spent 5+ days a week in a shop with them. And to top it all off the pay was shit.

I know I'm blogging right now, and preaching to the converted, but anon to anon, please don't ever buy their shit.
>>
>>5912966
Sounds rough for all you /tg/ fags out there.
And you probably can't use chink recasters(if they exist) either because the crowd of turbonerds would lynch you for it if they ever found out.

Briefly considered getting into war gaming, 40k obviously being the most popular one, but the dissonance in price turned me off.

I've also had the misfortune of working for GW and can confirm all of this (though our regulars were a pretty good bunch all-round and made up the majority of our sales).

I got 'let go' when they switched some of the smaller stores to one-man operation. My fellow staff members only found out about this when the area manager came into the store whilst the manager was away on holiday and effectively made us all redundant.
>>
>>5912982
The good news is that right now there are a ton of non-GW options for war games around that are really fun. Your best bet is to call up whatever your local non-GW game store is, ask what people play there and ask if anyone is willing to give you a demo of something that sounds interesting to you.

Some games with robots include Warmachine (steam powered magic robots), Infinity (exosuits, remote drones and GitS-style spider tanks) and Dropzone Commander (10mm game with a fair amount of walker units in it). Battletech and Heavy Gear are also obvious ones, but I think they're kind of hard to find people for comparatively.

I'd invest in some 400 and 800 as well. Sanding sponges if you can find 'em. It's just easier on curved surfaces; like zaku shoulder bells for example.
>>
>>5913054
2000 is overkill for pretty much anything but an extreme gloss paint job.
>>

Those grits are a bit overkill. I usually just use 600 and 1000 grit, and maybe 1500 to finish if I'm being anal.

Wow, those nub sanding tutorials Ive come across are wasted effort?
Upon reinspection I might have 400-600 grit, somewhere.

Is 400 ok to get rid of the scratches left by the needle files?
Is topcoat recommended or is it ok for a simple snap?
God I feel like a noob again for getting back into sandpaper filing, I remember creating popsicle sticks with two layers of 1200,1500 and 2000 grit, sanding down nubs with failure, so I gave up. And stuck to cutting nubs off little by little to reduce stress marks.
>>
>>5913106

Yeah yeah. You're gonna knock down the bulk of the nub with your files, and then you're gonna wanna hit it with a rough grit like 400 to take it down. Then proceed up your grits until you hit about 800 ((This is all if you plan on doing a full paint job)) and at that point it'd be ready for a basic surfacer primer like Mr. Surfacer 1000.
>>
>>5913106
400 should be fine to start, but you probably want to work your way up to 800 like >>5913112 said, or 1000 if you're not painting. A matte topcoat can really add to a kit, but it's up to you how much effort you want to put in, which isn't really a lot for top coating, but it can still be a pain finding a place to spray, waiting for good weather, etc.
>>
Are the IBO HG kits good? I've built a couple HG kits, including Barbatos, but now there are a ton more options. Do any stand out as really good or very poor quality?
>>
>>5913112
>>5913118
Thanks for the input, ill try it out for a bit.
And spring is coming in Australia, so weather should be fine soon so I can topcoat outside. I have never topcoated a master grade as I was concerned with messing up on them as opposed to a hg.
Despite this Ive heard claims that spraying close is better than 30cm?
>>
>>5913127

Hey, spray however far away you want. What's important is that you go easy. Spray the first few layers so it looks like the parts are covered in a fine mist.

Then, go for a "wet" layer which is what it sounds like (Don't go crazy)

Patience and control.
