For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

SD Group Build

Rules:
Pick up an SD anything, plane, Gundam/other MS, whatever, if it's generally an SD it counts (so I hope to see someone do a D-Style). Obviously, per all group builds, you'll want to paint it.

Submissions:
Email it to [email protected]
USE AN ACTIVE EMAIL ADDRESS

Due Date: November 1st

Good news! A kind anon has purchased some prizes for the group build. He has decided to do a random drawing rather than judge them like I did in the previous group build. Winners will be contacted via email.

For those curious, I intend to start the secret Santa signups on October 1st.

I hope whatever designs they come up with for the BF ova are better than the disappointment we got with the Island war ova.

I assume we have a few crossboarders from /m/ and such, how do you guys feel about the current topic of Tomino hating Gunpla/PlaModel culture, and his insistence that PlaModel didn't nurture the franchise, but obsessive female fans that would contribute to fanzines and crowd recording studios or meet ups.

http://dargol.blog3.fc2.com/blog-entry-4241.html

(It's not really new or anything since it's from the late '90s, but there's a resurgence on the topic)

It makes me wonder how many of my favorite creators hate me for buying into commercialism, actually. Supposedly Tomino has on record said he would shut down the Gundam Cafe if he could, as well.

>I need you to support my product, because I am an artist trying to make a living
>Whoa, whoa, that is too much support! Now that I am comfortably surviving from my artistic output, I feel the need to let everyone know I am against capitalism!
Honestly, this is how I see this sort of thing. An artist like Tomino wants to have a job, but they also don't want to admit they are not creating art purely for it's own sake. It's as they say, "art cannot exist in a vacuum". Without an audience, your writing is literally nothing. Fucking hypocrites.
>>
>>5901694

>>
>>5901694
I don't know how he can see gunpla as a drain on the franchise, it's the best hook I've found to get people interested in gundam.

The biggest drain on the franchise has been the lack of curation regarding new material. It ranges from good to horrible, with several universes and timelines with varying feelings and flavor. They pushed the pretty boys in the series, which is what led to obsessive female fans.

I really don't like seeing the guy who wrote turn A gundam blaming other people for obsessive female fans.

I've been looking for a certain gundam model kit for a while now and my total lack of knowledge on gundams in general is really killing me. I need some help tracking this guy down. It's got lanky arms that fold up into his shoulder jets because I'm guessing he fights in space? It's got a tan colorization bandit's head has like 5 dots I believe in an upside down T for eyes if I'm remembering correctly. It's definitely gotta be a grunt or something along those lines any help tracking this down would be so much fucking appreciated. Thank you in advance!

He can say whatever the fuck he wants. A lot of my favorite suits don't even have models.

That's one nasty leg seam and the bullet holes look too "clean", maybe dry brush some black around it, but it looks nice otherwise.
>>
>>5901997
A) I really hope you aren't planning on using that lighter for "Realistic weathering" purposes, because if so it won't work like you're thinking.

B) Good god seam weld those legs and arms.

Other than that the bullet holes look nice. Like you actually looked up what something like a line of machinegun fire would look like on armor instead of just randomly adding holes everywhere like I see a lot of beginners do.

Yeah, the only reason I got in to gundam as a whole was gundam build fighters and the gunpla it spawned.

Now I'm all over UC stuff.
>>
>>5902064
>kek dont worry i wont burn down my house

I meant more "Don't try to create realistic burn damage with actual fire" because melted plastic does not look like burned and melted metal and armor.

Paints could be thinned more but overall nice work.
>>
So I was reading the directions on my Alclad bottles and I noticed that the non-high shine metallics (Gunmetal, Steel, Magnesium) don't say to use a gloss black base. They say to just spray the paint straight onto the primer.

>>5902075
>that color scheme
>>
>>5902173
You can but the gloss black is meant to "help" the finish of a high-shine metallic to give it the mirror-like finish. The more perfect the surface of the glass the more uniform the mirror-finish of the metallic color is, which means higher shine and less distortions in reflections.

The alclad metals are reflective on their own so they technically don't need a gloss black base unless you want that mirror-like finish. And you can usually still get a non-mirror metallic look just by not polishing the alclad after it dries even if you do use a gloss black base, though it might be shinier than if you spray your metal over satin or flat.
>>
>>5902183
I'm doing a gold and "Black" paintjob using Polished brass and gunmetal with various non-mirror metallics for the frame (Mostly steel). Basecoating the brass pieces tonight with gloss black and since I'm a lazy shit I was wondering if I could just skip basecoating the gunmetal and steel parts or if basecoating would even make a noticable difference to them.

>>
>>5902194
You don't need a gloss black base coat for any of the regular finish metals, only the high-shine ones. There's a list on their site for the two categories.

http://alclad2.com/how-to/
>>
>>5902183
Why gloss black specifically? Why not gloss yellow or gloss green?
>>
>>5902236
It's important to note that the core tenet it is that no matter what colour or type of paint you're using, your choice of primer/undercoat will affect the appearance of it.
>>
>>5902141

>>5902241
Black contrasts the best I guess? Not really sure why, but I've experimented with metallic paints and they always seem to look better on a black base

Holy shit is the whole thing painted? If so that's amazing!

Do you use primer? And how many coats and how long do you wait between each coat?

Pic is mine
>>
>>5901694
Didn't Gundam almost get cancelled until bandai started making model kits
>>
>>5902588

I don't use primer unless I change the colors drastically. might not be for everyone, as I rarely touch my kits. I only use 2 coats and the shortest I'll wait is a day, only because I only paint a little at a time.

half of it is about getting the paint to the right consitency. I use vallejo's right now and just thin with water, but I'm researching other brands as per the guide.

the other half is about being really fickle with the brush and making sure paint doesn't pool up or have any bubbles. usually it takes lots of repetitive small and quick strokes. it does take some trial and error to get it down
>>
>>5902228

I would kind of like more of the gundam armor girls. it would be cool to have both versions, but i don't like the designs of the ones that are out now.
>>
>>5902364
I kinda wanna see what it would look like with four moving limbs, never really liked the static poses. Post pics if you go through with it!
>>
>>5902588
Paint is too thick and brush strokes are evident. Yellow on the crotch is really bad, and the grey isn't much better. I find that generally, primer *really* help. It makes it easier to get an even colour, and helps the paint to adhere better. Overall, not a bad first attempt, but next time practice a bit more on spoons, don't paint so thickly, and get some masking tape (which would have helped with the paint on the crotch)
>>
>>5902658
Alright thanks for the advice anon. :*
>>
I wonder how all the handbrushed gunpla and kits don't have those weird specks and lumps in the paintjobss, when a lot of painted wargamming minis (other thread, other board) are full of it.

Do those people not clean off the surfaces of dirt before priming/painting?

i had a question for you guys since i've never seen anyone else ask about this (at least not recently). i'm planning on buying some metal pipe parts for my next zaku kit. i've never painted metal before, so do you need special paints for them or will tamiya primer/lacquer paint do nicely? if anyone knows any good sellers as well, that would be nice too. thanks.

Decent choices. Atleast you didn't go with something horrible like the MG The O, anyways If it's a char suit I reccomend you The Char Zaku 2.0 or the Gelgoog. Both kits are good in their own right, but the piping is a nightmare for the zaku.

Any specific type/brand of glue to use ? When it's plastic on plastic I usually just use plastic cement or some revel modelism glue I had laying around, but when I try metal or others on plastic, like when repairing a joint by pinning, it doesn't seems to do the trick.

>>5902818
>>5902842
Yep, Tamiya's primer states on the can that it's good for plastic and metal. Personally I recommend the Fine primers, they go down much more smoothly.

>>5902988
It was rushed because it won a popularity poll, so it's not as good as it could be (another glaring gripe: it reuses the pipe-armor runners from the MG 1.0 Gouf instead of having a dedicated runner of its own).
The only good point I'll give it is the gunmetal frame.

>>5903307
Isn't that just from either the flat finish or drybrushing?
>>
>>5903307
The stuff they do is a lot smaller than gunpla, and pretty much any paintjob will have imperfections when you zoom in that close to it. If the people with "Smooth" handbrush results in this thread took pictures that close in with proper lighting you would see surface imperfections as well.
>>

I'm painting a Gusion Rebake into Tan armor into an Olive Drab and the white parts into a whitish Gray color.

Will be painting a Carta graze kitbashed with some Scwhalbe graze parts, jet black with a lance gun to give it a black knight motif. Might add a cloak to it too. Now i Just need a big shield to go with it.

I built my first kit recently, an HG 1/144 Gundam G-Arcane and not too long after that I built an HG 1/144 Barbatos.

The difference between the two in terms of articulation is incredible to me. I can hardly touch G-Arcane's waist without the thing falling apart, whereas everything on Barbatos feels so tight and stable.

What I'm wondering is, are all of the G-Reco kits as fiddly as G-Arcane? Or is that normal for kits with alt modes in general? I have a G-Self that I sort of bought while I was still giddy from finishing my first gunpla, and I'm worried that it'll have the same issues that G-Arcane does.
>>
Has anyone else had issues with HG Dynames or the other 00 S1 Gundams having tight as fuck wrist joints?
>>
>>5904482
I don't have any issues with Gaeon being unstable, so I doubt it's a general problem with G-Reco kits. Probably just an issue with Arcane.

What's the minimum curing time for Tamiya cement and thin cement before I can start sanding and puttying the plastic?
>>
>>5904739
>curing time for Tamiya cement
Do you have any idea how plastic cement works? It's not paint. It doesn't cure. It contains solvents that melt the plastic and allows the melted plastic to be welded together as the solvents evaporate. The only thing you're waiting on is for all the solvents to evaporate and the plastic to reharden.

I bought the RG Astray because I wanted to try building an RG and I already had most of the other suits in other grades. Personally I was pretty disappointed because I enjoy seeing how things fit together and suddenly go from anonymous plastic bits to joints and entire limbs and shit the most in building gunpla, and the Red Astray (and possibly all other RGs) comes with a mostly pre-assembled inner frame and just lets you stick on the armor, which the Red Frame has little of. If you're buying it for the collecting it's fine, it's amazingly poseable, but if you're buying it for the building I'd recommend you get any MG instead.

To be 100% safe? By not drilling or shaving. There are a variety of solutions for you if you need to drill or shave, but do you think posters here are going to be experts?
There are all kinds of dust collection systems for carpenters, that literally suck the sawdust off the table as boards are being cut. Nothing like that exists specifically for models, but nothing is stopping you from going to Lowe's or Home Depot and buying a nice system. Alternatively, you could get some kind of attachment for a shop vac and work near it.
Use your brain.

No luck if you wanted a 1/144 Tequila Gundam I'm afraid.

I'm really anal about nub marks so I can spend 30+ minutes on one piece just shaving it down, sanding it, and lining it. Then I top coat them all and assemble.

Unicorn Sequel
Hathaway Flash
Crossbone
New UC original

At the top currently is Crossbone followed by Hathaway Flash.

This one here is a photo thats mine, I visited there 1st of February this year, was spectacular and shiny. I journeyed through Nagoya and and reached Tokyo just to see it and buy the mega size gft Gundam.

When it turns its head and lights up it plays various music from 0079 then it starts playing music from other series. Then it looks up and does the ventilation smoke effect. Quite spectacular I would say.

Also check out the gundam cafe in expocity, statue of the RX78 and Char Zaku going at it, and you can sit down in the cafe. Line up only takes 10 mins as well and the menu is entertaining.

Mr Super Clear is NOT lacquer-based, right? What is an alternative choice for sealing between paint coats/colors? Vallejo matte varnish okay?
>>
>>5907179
m,r top coat is acrylic, mr super clear is lacquer

desu i've never had a problem with putting super clear over my shit so long as i wasn't an idiot
>>
>>5907179
Like that guy said, Mr Super Clear is lacquer-based, but I've been airbrushing Mr Super Clear Gloss for clear coats after my acrylic paint coats for panel lining, decals, etc. and nothing ever happened. You just have to properly wait for the paint to cure before spraying it on, just like anything else.
>>
>>5907179
>>5907185
An anon from the custom thread there said:
>"Super clear uses a stronger solvent. It is more durable but will attack enamel and acrylic paints underneath."
>"Yes both are clear paint, but you need to be aware what paint type is chemically weaker than what other paint type you're using or you'll end up with a mess"
They didn't confirm the acrylic/lacquer thing. You'd think looking at their item descriptions in the shops would help but it's always just one sentence flavour text. All I want is something good for acrylic & (watercolor) pencils...

Don't be afraid of spraying up closer and laying it a bit thick, or at least do multiple coats. The classic 30cm distance you'll be told about online is a fucking joke, sure spray cans lay on thick but at that distance you're putting your shit to waste and only lightly sprinkling your kit.

Keep it even and under light there should be minimum highlights, the plastic shouldn't really shine though a layer of spotty top coat, it should be an even rough layer that diffuses light.

I'm no expert though, that's just what I've figured out on my own experience and in contrast to builds I've seen online I prefer my results.

Made a quick comparison out of stuff I found online, it might not be the fairest due to completely different builders and photo set ups but you can tell the left is a pretty bad matte
>>
How would I achieve a candy coat or a titanium finish for white?
>>
>>5907211
Almost all lacquers will attack weaker paints. Most of the time you can put it over well-cured acrylic that's a good acrylic to begin with but also had a week to cure.
>>
>>5905667
All i did to the blade was paint it and sand down the nub bits.
>>
>>5907216
this, the pic i posted with the matte was not sprayed from 30cm, i've never sprayed that far before
>>
>>5907222
Alright, Top Coat it is then. Thanks, m8.

I have a bunch of acrylic paints I bought years ago but never used, they're probably not great but I'd rather not blow even more money on a hobby I'm just starting. Is it dumb to thin acrylic paint with water, should a special thinner always be used?
>>
>>5907242
>They're probably not great
Anon, before you waste hours and make us all assmad at your decision, for the love of God tell us the paint brand or provide a picture. No matter how great you may be at thinning nothing good comes of craft paints on gunpla, Reddit is lying if they tell you otherwise.

Finally getting around to painting my first Gundam in years. Working with Tamiya paints has been quite a learning curve. I'm used to Reaper and GW paint, so the quick drying time has been a challenge to adapt to. I've finished painting all the white parts, and I'll work on the red parts the rest of this week.

If I'm panel lining with enamels and cleaning the lines with enamel thinner, is it ok to do that over an acrylic clear coat? Or will the acrylic be destroyed by the enamel thinner?
>>
>>5907308

I used Alclad's Black Chrome over this whole thing.
I had to darken it a little extra though, one of the belly stripes came out darker than the rest on the first pass, so I had to tone everything else to match.

any suggestions? I built a RG before but it sucked badly (it was RX78-2, somebody told me it was the worst kit for starters ever as it keeps falling a part)

Grab the Squadron nippers, and the pour type gundam markers (you clean it with lighter fluid and qtips).
>>
>>5907451
I'm a nooblet myself, but you are missing those basics. Kit-wise, the guide has some suggestions, the one I got worked well enough for starters.

Come to think, I hear lots of love for the IBO kits out, are they good for beginners?

I would say you don't need all the different kinds of blades with the knife. For basic stuff, at most you'd just need the one knife, but I'd recommend buy extra of the #11 blade for back up.
>>

apply setter, manipulate to desired location, dab out all the excess to fix in place then use softer?
>>
>>5907442
So all I need is white paint over the chrome? Should be easy enough. I wanted to give one of my own kits a titanium finish, and I thought I would have to use pearl white or something.
>>
>>5907532
No it's white paint, and on top of that is the Black Chrome. While testing it out I noticed that it just had less and finer flakes than the regular chrome, so I got the Petitguy to see how it worked over colors other than black.
>>
>>5907540
Did you prime anything special or put anything underneath the white paint? Like

Primer > white paint > Alclad Black Chrome ?
>>
>>5907527
