Doing some kitbashing on my Dark Imperium lads to fix some posing I found a tad awkward. I'm pretty happy with 'em so far but I'm not sure if I want to swap out Sgt. #2's combat knife for a frag grenade.
What do y'all think? Anything I should fix/add besides moldlines and some gap filing? These are some really nice models, I gotta say. I was doubtful when they were first revealed but they've really grown on me.

Just trying out my airbrush, getting a feel for how well it works, and getting my Sakura Tree Dryads painted up. The branchwych on the left was painted by hand, and the tree lord was painted solely with an airbrush.

I plan on finding some kind of highlight for my tree-lord's bark that I can paint by hand. But here's where my work with the airbrush on it ends, as there's nothing more I can do with it.

Going to pick up a box of Sanguinary Guard soon and am trying to plan what I want to do for my Sanguinary Ancient. After reading all the shit that went down at Baal with the Tyranids, I thought it would be cool to make the Ancient look like he came from that battle, carrying a banner that is dedicated to it. I wanna write on the banner "Baal Invicta" with a Tyranid Skull hanging over the top. Also playing with the idea of what if the Guard wore a headdress made from a Tyranid like how Velites wore wolf pelts in pic related.

Does this sound good? What are some other ideas?

Thinking about doing these guys in a dark blue/blue gray with creme markings, being spess Austrians, and possibly dropping to just a single shoulderpad. Figured I'd take a shot in the dark on this. I feel like I've seen this head bit before but for the life of me can't remember where. I tried looking at some pictures of older SoB models but couldn't seem to see it. Is it from some newer kit/somewhere else or am I just blind?

Looks like the body is from the female inquisitor, the head is one of the Sallet helmed sisters, think the one with the storm bolter.

I hope everyone is ready, I am starting work on my new aos deathbringer using kharne the betrayer as base.

I hope everyone is strapped in, this is gonna be a bumpy ride.

Right, after cutting some wiring and other 40k things off I have all the basic pieces to finish him off.

However I don't know how I exactly want him. To his right is different weapons to replace the chain axe, to the right things to replace the plasma pistol and on top to replace the backpack.

>>
Painting up Squad #1 of my Primaris Marines (posted them in grey a couple threads ago). Removed them from elevated bases because consistency (and my autism) be damned, they looked too tall with the extensions.

Waiting on a bottle of Biel-Tan Green shade to get delivered to finish it off before I do details and the last load of highlights and then they'll be done. Liking my new recipe for green though.

Thoughts? Should I just paint them now and wait for the greenshade to arrive and get some other squads up to this stage or do my details now and just apply the shade carefully when it arrives? Torn at the moment with it really.

Right? Nothing hard about getting hold of some cheap brass on eBay for £6 and raiding the bits box. I feel bad for people not using one of the main five chapters though. Made a fully articulated Wraithlord. Copper wire inserts for the shoulder guns, ankles, neck and wrists, which also allows the hands to be swapped out. Ball and cap joints for the upper torso and shoulders. Swivel ball joints from a Megabloks figure for the elbows and hips and custom made double hinged knees inserted into hollowed out partitions of the legs which were carefully pinned.

Didn't early WHF/40k have some fluff explanation about how traveling through the warp could sometimes end up with weapons or armour switching dimensions, leading to Chaos Warriors with Plasma Pistols, Skinks with Lasguns and the like?
And personally, I like the guys idea. Imagine Khorne sitting atop of his throne, thinking about how he could murder everything in AoS, when he suddenly has the brilliant idea of sending over that chainaxe guy who's really, REALLY good at killing people. *POP*, Kharn travels through the dimensions, angry as fuck, and Khorne mortal followers start gathering around him, viewing him as a worthy leader (Also, not much your average regular axe can do against power-armour and a chainaxe)

exactly, maybe thinner lines with multiple layers to really make the pink pop. I like vibrant colors on Lizards though so ultimately up to you
>>
>>54000283
You know, scales can easily drybrushed too. Saves you some time and might even give them a more natural look.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mihVmvHHyUQ
>>
>>54000310
So one of the things that kills me is the thin paint going into the creases of the scales. is there something to correct this?

also why use thin multiple layers on an edge highlight? wouldnt a strong line help the color and vibrancy?
>>
Does anybody have a simple recipe for good white cloaks? Nice clean white rather than Dark Angels style cream. I'm painting my first Sisters and it's the one part I'm struggling with.
>>
>>54000382
>>53999476

I tried drybrushing the pink onto purple, but it didn't really seem to take well. Appeared chalky and couldn't really tell it was there. maybe needed to go in a little more heavy?
>>
>>54000501
Don't do a pure white. Light grey with white highlights works much better.
>>
>>54000501
If you're using GW paint then base Celestra Grey and layer Ulthuan Grey, Then depending on your surface you can either target or widely wash (I'd use a 1:1 ratio of wash to medium because you're washing such light colours), touch up non-recess areas with Ulthuan Grey, and then highlight with White Scar.

also upon close inspection the weapon is slightly bent, but its not noticable when deployed on the battlefield.

Also my phone is on charge now and i forgot to take a pic of behind to show the cape.

>Didn't early WHF/40k have some fluff explanation about how traveling through the warp could sometimes end up with weapons or armour switching dimensions, leading to Chaos Warriors with Plasma Pistols, Skinks with Lasguns and the like?

Technology was a valid gift of the chaos gods in Rogue Trader days. The Realms of Chaos books had both WHFB and WH40K rules in them, and there was some amount of crossover.

You know, that's not a bad idea. I was wondering what to do with the heavy dudes, because the 30K-style everyone has a special gun thing gets in the way of my whole "these are true scale marines" thing. The Primaris torsos are a fair bit wider than normal Space Marine models, so I think putting it on will require a fair amount of conversion work. But I've got two spare plasma cannons on sprue, I might do a mock up in the next couple of days because it's a cool idea that I'm absolutely going to nick.

Also update on Primaris Dark Angels. Sergeant is nigh on finished, just some minor work on the details and his chapter badge and he's done.

I don't like how his tabard has turned out though. Any ideas on a fix? I'm thinking of just painting it all in Ushbati Bone, throwing on seraphim shade, throwing another layer of bone on it and then highlighting as appropriate, but I'm not sure. Worst part about being a Dark Angels player is having to paint those bloody robes. They hurt so good.

I'd say it's probably easier to cut them over or under the kneejoint (whichever looks better in the final pose, over the kneejoint if you want to straighten the leg) and glue them pack with plastic cement.
It's a chemical weld and should hold up reasonably well.

Trying to heat parts like that with and open flame is almost certainly gonna ruin them since the heat it hard to control.

As alternative to that you could look into a technique called salt bathing or something like that.
Basically you fill a small container with salt, and put that container in another container with hot water, wait until the salt is hot and then put the plastic parts into the salt until they are pliable.

Never tried that myself, but I've seen conversions by somebody who made running SM scout legs that way without cutting.

Cut and glue sounds easier though, and would be my personal choice for something mechanical like Necron legs. You don't want the legs to look soft and bendy.

So I bought a box of marines from a friend, and among them were a five man squad of Legion of the Damned troops, one of them missing his bolter, which was nowhere to be found in the box, or any of my friend's miscellaneous bits boxes, so I've been trying to figure out what to do with him.

Legion of the Damned can have one special weapon and one heavy weapon regardless of squad size, and I already have a flamer marine with the squad, so I was thinking a multi-melta marine would be good.

Would it be too weird looking to take the melta gun from an attack bike sprue and like take the left hand from a tactical sergeant and cut the blade off of it to attach the hand to the melta make him pistol grip holding the thing, and stick that arm onto the guy's stump?

I've never really done any conversions or anything before, but I feel like it could be a neat looking model. Attack bike weapon converted to a handheld weapon being held in the off-hand of a Damned Legionnaire.

The attack biker multi-meltas aren't too terribly large, I think they're only a tad larger than the ones that come with Devastators, and he wouldn't be using it one handed only, it would be just holding it like that while he throws a grenade, I'll just say he's a left handed marine.

Or maybe I could stick the melta half of a combi-melta on top of a normal melta-gun somehow?
>>
>>54011146
If you just give him a multimelta one handed gripped, it's going to look kinda bad. It's a honking big gun and it will look pretty unnatural just sticking out. If you, say, hand him holding it by support grip while he lobs the grenade, that would look better.

I guess a devastator box would have the proper bits to make a hand in a position like that?

Another idea I had was getting something like pic related going on, but with the melta part of a combi-weapon kit on top of the melta there, maybe with some sort of brace around the marine's arm to support it in the way the Sternguard heavy flamer model has that wrist brace.

It looks very good, though some small pointers:
>yellow/black striped cable could use some cleaning up
>blue verdigris could be a little bit watered down, as it looks very "clump"-ish in a few places
>maybe a few highlights here and there for extra "pop"

Preliminary scheme for my Skitarii/Mechanicus and a Knight that still needs transfers, still need to buy a transfer sheet. All the blank white areas will have an admech transfer of some sort.

Knight is fully magnetized and can swap the battle cannon and reaper chainsword around either way. Kinda want to get a missile pod for it.

Blank grey-green area will probably have black flames painted on it like the Ranger has, but I need to get a new Micron pen because mine are long dead. Need to think of something good for the banner.
>>
>>54013191
Bronze is balthazar gold, brown wash and sycorax bronze for highlights. The green is literally just a couple of camoshade washes over white.

>>54013217
I have loved painting mine so far, especially the guy throwing the grenade, I just love everything about that model. so-so for converting. I think most heads are left off the models but some are attached to back plats and stuff to cut down on the amount of assembly steps. If you are handy with a a knife and putty then you will be fine. Theres a lot of character in the models, I just hope the new box set plague marines can keep up.

You seem like a good painter
Like it looks very neat and detailed

You just gotta unironically thin your paints better

Especially on the dress where it looks grainy and weird

Also try doing some highlights on the edges and use a wash or two
Agrax earthshade would be good for that model

Also some people like to hate on it when people paint the eyes like you did
But desu i like it

Hey /tg/ - I'm working on plague marine conversions / kitbashes. It's really my first foray into conversion and I'm finding it really difficult but rewarding. I'd love to hear any tips you guys might have for conversion. I'm finding green stuff harder to work with than I thought - and I'm not really trying to sculpt anything. I'm more using it to connect bits that otherwise wouldn't go together.

Anyway, here are the dudes I've worked on so far. I feel like I'm still missing something but I can't put my finger on it. Rebreathers? Spines and spikes? I'd love some feedback.

Right bros I want to get more into kitbashing, having already made an imperial space marine and more unique space marine scout.

This time I decided I wanted to go for something a little more unique and make Miriael Sabathiel.

What does /tg/ think of using these bits as the base parts of the model?

- chaos space marine sword/ chainsword
- chaos space marine bolt pistol
- chaos space marine power pack
- female head (probs will need to go 3rd party)
- sisters of silence torso or leg (probs will have to go to ebay)
- sisters of silence pauldrons (ditto)
- random spikey chaos bits/ icons for flavor

Love the idea! I would say power sword instead of chainsword. You might consider slaanesh champion pauldrons - from the chaos space marines kit or possibly, with some work, form the noise marine bits. Also for the head, not sure how adept with a knife you are, but you might think about a combination of a daemonette head and battle sisters hair (possibly from one of the gematria?) Just some ideas! I would love to see it when you are done!

Right on, you aren't doing badly for being so new. Definitely work on thinning your paints. You might try a wet palette. When you undercoat, do you use a spray? That can be really helpful too.

The paildrons on your marine there - GW whites are weird - very chunky. When you paint white, try the lightest grey you can find with white scar as a highlight. White scar is a little better than ceramite white in terms of thickness out of the pot.

Just some thoughts and suggestions. You are doing quite well in my opinion!

Cheers mate.

When I got him he was primed by someone else. Got him base second hand, pulled apart the model and rebuilt it, should have stripped him and reprimed him.

I used imperial primer from the pot on the bits (chaos lord cloak, necron gun piece, random bits of sqrue I cannibalized, bolt pistol scope and a bit from a shotgun)

I just started getting sprays and I agree on the whites, I typically use dawnstone as a buffer and then ulthewen white over the top, but I still get the issues with it, hence why I am moving away from whites a little and changing my chapter scheme around, going for white knee pads with blue legs.

Ah, gotcha! I want to reiterate that those guys don't look bad. I've used imperial primer as well (it's what I started with) and the results have been mixed. Sometimes it works quite well but it seems like over time it develops sticky little chunks that can really fuck up a model. So I normally spray these days. I'm going to be trying washes over a corax spray for my death guard. But usually when I paint white I try to do Uluthan with white scar highlights and I've found that the Uluthan doesn't have that weird texture that so many of the GW whites do.

Keep it up man! I want to see Miriel when she is done!

Dunno how much experience you have with brass, but I really struggle with it. I'm generally more than happy to just get the damn things on in place, because they're so tiny and fiddly that they just get coated in glue that's hard to remove and can really fuck up a model. But I see what you mean, they're generally a bit gappy but there's not much I can do but get better at it.

Saying that though, the brass is much less noticeably gappy once they're primed and painted. This is roughly what it should look like when done (after the spray and paint has filled in what gaps it can).

Any tips on how to get a better fit would be appreciated like, always wondered if there's a trick to it that I just haven't worked out.
>>
>>54016775

You should always do a thin coat of black over your primer if you're doing a black scheme bud. If adequately thin, it's not going to clog up the deets.

If you're talking about the leafy boys on the dude's head, they're laurels. Check your dark imperium transfer sheet, right at the left of the ultramarines part. There's white laurel decals there that you can apply boi

Ok /wip/, a week ago I was at my flgs and found some really old metal painboys for sale for around $24. Because I'm making a painboy dominant army, I bought them without hesitation.
I've already painted the first one and he looks great but the other painboy he came packaged with just looks so goofy. I couldn't even think of how I should paint the fucker.
I tried to paint him and see if I could just make something up as I went on and, as expected, he kinda looks like shit. I'm going to strip him down and try painting him again but I still dont know what I should do with him. Any advice on what I should do?

Thanks for the feedback! Personally I think its the pattern of the stripes I myself dislike the most. Its printed in the base so nothing I can really do about that aspect. I just chose to paint it that classical yellow black style and think it came out pretty good.

I use the same style for all my 40k armies, but this time I also tried to integrate some temple ground of some sort. To lift the holy presence of my marines, and that they might actually fight something worth saving.

Yea I know, my thoughts exactly. Its the way its printed on the texture pin. To paint it all black or all yellow has been tried, but it still looks awkward. I guess I could use it as plain metal, but that´s just a missed opportunity to ad some color amongst the debris.
And as I said, of what I have tried, this looks the best, even though I am in agreement with you, it still does look a bit odd with that metal in the middle.
