Again from last thread, but the glue on my dkok grenadiers isn't sticking for some reason. On the one I've put together, some bits will still move, on others I've attempted, the glue turns into a film which flakes off.

Do I use gorilla glue?

Also, you need to use super glue for resin, not plastic glue

>>
>>53946330
I did wash them but I'd not known about the super glue.
>>
>>53946345
And it still doesn't work? Try to use a very small file in the contact points to make the resin a bit uneven, or put a tiny tiny little bit of paper right into the contact point with the glue.

On resin-resin, metal-metal and resin/metal-plastic you have to use super glue
>>
>>53946382
>On resin-resin, metal-metal and resin/metal-plastic you have to use super glue
No you don't. There are all kinds of glue which will work on those things, many of them better than super-glue in some ways. The only really good thing about super glue is that it dries fairly fast so you don't have to hold the pieces in place.

However, when working with resin, there are some steps you need to take to make sure you have a good bond.

First of all, clean it properly. I know you already gave it a clean, but it pays to go overboard with mold release agent. Soak with detergent, scrub with a toothbrush, repeat like five times. Then just before working on it, give it a bath of isopropyl alcohol and dry with a hot air blower. Wear gloves when handling it after that, to avoid skin grease getting on it and so you don't glue you fingers to it.

Then, you probably want to pin everything you possibly can. At the very least, gouge the surface to give the glue something to grip to.

After you have put the glue on, figure out a way to apply pressure and keep the pieces clamped in position. This often requires a bit of ingenuity with elastic bands, clothespegs, clips and vices. But it really helps to be able to just leave the mini for an hour while the glue sets properly.
>>
>>53946650
Oh well, yeah I guess. I was talking about the glues GW sells. I'm sure there are better ones around.

Lads, how do I paint Space Marines in mostly silver easily and effectively?

I was considering getting the GW Leadbelcher spray, patching up with Leadbelcher before washing with Nuln Oil and possibly picking out some edges with Vallejo Game Chainmail;

But I'm not sure whether I'm limiting myself, didn't GW make some new super metallics recently?

Metallics tend to look bad on non-busy surfaces, especially coppery ones. I'd say you want a nice warm colour which stands out from the grey. Orange and yellow don't tend to look good next to bronze, so probably red.

Leadbelcher spray turned out pretty shit when I tried it. Have no problems with the other colours, but that one just ended up far too grainy.

I think you really need to use an airbrush or spraygun if you want fast silver over smooth surfaces. You don't need a good brush, but unfortunately you do kind of need a good compressor to avoid spattering.

the trouble will be going down low enough with a steady airflow, you only need 10-15 psi most of the time. A tank is also nice to keep the flow from pulsing with the pump.

Not bad for a total beginner. Not bad at all.

But the heavy drybrush with white shows and gives the first skeleton a somewhat messy look. A bit more subtle, and maybe not such a bright white would work better.

As a next step i recommend to look into washes and get a black and a brown one to give your future miniatures more definition and depth.

>>

I really appreciate the input.

Yeah, I realize now that they really do mean as little paint as possible for dry brushing.

I actually did use a wash (vallejo black). I think I got paranoid that it would pool too much outside the recesses and cover much of the color, so I probably ended up brushing off too much of it.

>>
>>53948077
How on earth is that armor painted, green wash over bare tan plastic or something?

Anyway, go for the basics. Put down solid, veen and smooth block colours. Outline everything with black or really dark colours to make shit pop. Mix shading and highlight colours, apply "manually", don't primarily use washes or drybrushing except for when such is really called for.
>>
>>53948362
Its all about getting used to how the different paints and techniques work and behave.

If you enjoy painting, i recommend checking the miniature painting section on twitch creative. Some of the guys there are really nice and helpful and explain everything to you if you ask them in chat.

To make the armor, I used green paint over white primer. I then used a dry brush with metal bronze using more paint than usual for dry brushing.

It's easier to get bright Second Edition Blood Angels red over a white undercoat than over a grey undercoat. I've done both methods, and the models with the grey undercoat ("Zynolyte Light Gray All-Purpose Spray Primer") are noticeably different.

That's not to say it can't be done. In fact, one could paint yellow or even white over a black undercoat (followed by red, of course, is what I mean) and probably achieve a similar effect, but that's one more coat of paint that probably could have been skipped.

Total noob here, i just assembled all of the little shit and tools and paints and crap to start painting. After 6 hours of assembly i managed to put together my first Spess Muhreen Sergeant.

Here's where i get confused. I'm priming it using this (http://www.migjimenez.com/en/acrylic-primers/117-dark-yellow-primer.html). I'm brushing it on and the result is this fucking shit. I assume i need to do up a second coat, but i guess there's something i'm doing wrong that makes it be fucking...splotchy? It dried up real quick like. I did thin it with some acrylic thinner to start, but then i noticed it's not mushing up details and is pretty runny even without the thinner. Tips? Help? Trolling? Anything helps. Thanks dudes.

Man... it looks like he climbed out of a bowl of pea soup.

I wish I had a solution for you, anon, but my only experience with brush-on-primer was Citadel's Imperial Primer - which is an affront to The Emperor's benevolence. Even my local GW's manager does not encourage its use.

If you're determined to go this way - and I suppose you must be because of limitations on using spray primer (lack of suitable weather or spraying location?) - it definitely needs another coat. You're not going to be able to get thinned acrylic paint to stick satisfactorily to all that bare grey area - especially in the crevices where you need to get washes to darken your shadows, even if you are expecting paint to be underneath.

The bigger problem I'm seeing going in this direction are the brush strokes. I suspect they'll be visible underneath a couple of thin coats of acrylic. A second coat of that primer might hide them, but it could come at the cost of some of this model's detail.
>>
>>53950163

>I'll give it a final round of touch ups since i apparently keep missing small spots that come up in pictures.

It never ends. Really. You can think you've one the best job ever, but the moment you switch on the macro lens and post the picture here in glorious 1280 x 1024 resolution, that's the first moment you'll realize how noticeable that splotch on the right foot actually is!

I find the shooty hands on Kastellan Robots extremely retarded so I would like to mount something on their power fists, like in pic. Thing is I am right now extremely poor, so I can work only with leftovers from Mechanicus Battlebox. I probably could use Phosphor blasters from Kataphrons, but I have only 3. Maybe use one from Kastellan's back and one from servitor (and mounting flamers on their backs?)

Hi guys, a quick dumb question. So far I've been painting by wetting my brush in tap water and then taking some paint straight from the container. Not a best way to do it, I know, so I want to start using a palette. I'll probably make myself a wet one soon, but for now, what can be used as a "dry" palette? Will just a few pages of paper do? Are there any specific materials that work well or should be avoided?

Duncan said to me, an absolute novice in the art of painting minis, to assemble a miniature and then prime and paint. One of the minis has a rifle over his chest, will I make it or how should I do it? Prime them separated, finish painting both parts and THEN unite them? Will the glue even work?
>>
>>53953688
You need to cover contact areas but it should work
>>
>>53953688
That's what I usually do, just don't paint over the areas which will connect. If you do it should glue together anyway, but might be problematic so try to avoid it. You can also assemble the entire miniature and then paint, but getting to some areas might be very difficult then.

They are from Denizen miniatures.
They have a range of racecar drivers and the like.

The miniatures are 1/43 so I'm not 100% sure if they'd fit on GW stuff since 28mm translates roughly to 1/56, but since the heads and hands are exaggerated due to heroic scale it may actually fit.

Couldn't find a size comparison picture atm though to say for sure.

The more layers of shade, the more the metallic effect is lessened, so normal ones or darker metallics will not shine through enough.

Thanks for the input so far! By the way, how good is the mechanicus standard grey primer? Or should I stick with regular black primer and apply a base coat of grey?

>>53954763
Revilers actually sparked my interest in grey chapters. But, I fear their extremely simple color scheme could result in bland miniatures since I'm not an expert painter. I should probably look into wearing / weathering techniques.

Very nice, do we know which models are coming yet? Red Scorpions are actually among my top picks together with Carcharodons. The two have a similar color scheme but a very different organization... I like the fact that they are codex-compliant so that I can use whichever units I prefer, but I'm not too keen on apothecaries spam either.

>>53955301
I'm actually very partial to the Carcharodons color scheme. The things which are pushing me back are the fact that they are supposed to use a lot of old armor marks, of which I don't have any atm. I noticed there is a small warhammer tv tutorial for carcharodons armor which is a good start.
>>
>>53955191
Needs some shading, I'd say. Reikland Flesh for the skin, nuln oil for the metals, agrax earthshade for everything else. Then neaten back up again, except for the recesses where the shade settled in (Or do just a recess shading, putting your shades not all over the miniature but specifically into all the little recesses.) Then use a brighter metal colour for some edge highlights on the gun and maybe the mask, and go over the skin like >>53955304 posted. You may not necessarily need much of an edge highlight if you paint up a boatload of cultists though.

>>53955211

scale isn't too bad with regular humans. Might be fair to say they're a little too big, but a large part of that might be the extended base I'm using (which admitedly ruin a lot of their worth for comparing). But the base is only adding an extra 3mm so it shouldn't be too bad.

That's actually a pretty good idea for fluff, especially since Primaris Marines are treated surprisingly expendably all in all so far in the fluff - they're special, but they're being thrown onto the front lines faster than an untrained teenager in WW1.

As for the name, that's harder. What gene-seed do they have? Knights of the Bloody Cross - the idea being that they live for their sacrifice - could be interesting.

Any tips on removing models from bases without damaging either?

I based my models in sand and sprayed them; but I'm having trouble getting the paint to cover the bases now I'm trying to paint over the basic spray. It doesn't seem to cover the sand. (The sand has already been sprayed)

Any way I can just remove the models and spray all the bases my desired color and then reglue them after the wash?

I've seen alot of people mention test painting models, I assume you get them at your FLGS, right? Are they free? Since I don't frequent a game store should I buy something along with it?

You get a cheap miniature from anywhere. Buy some cheap testers on eBay, buy a box at the store to just fuck with, or get some given to by a friend. Fuck, some dollar-store armymem would do.

Basically, just a test mini is just a miniature you use to test out your painting, or see how a scheme you want to paint looks on a model. There aren't designated test models, it's just practice.

Got a nid army for about 10 cents a model from a grab bag. Sure many of you saw that post, so won't go into it here.

What I do want is: recommendations for removing this super glue?

Double checking before I proceed but my plan was...

Step 1: Freeze them, then gently pick/break open super glue to expose surfaces for better chemical weathering

Step 2: Simple Green or some other plastic-safe cleaner to break down the glue bonds

Step 3: Have nearly free Tyranid army.

Better solutions? Is freezing + chipping worth it or will cleaner eat right through it's rather thick coating?

Can't decide between making a swords and flamer heavy Black Templar successor chapter with a Custode squad or well rounded Lamenters successor chapter with lore based in cheeky references to other sci-fi series

i'd go with the templars idea, I doubt the Lamenters have ever had enough marines consistently enough to form a successor
>>
>>53960053

The Lamenters have been consistently under strength, never really approaching anywhere above 500 Marines and consistently standing at roughly ~250 to 300 Marines in later lore, almost since their inception.

Lamenters have never really had Marines to make a successor, and if they did it'd likely die out immediately doe to inheriting their phenomenally bad luck.

The idea was that they were a tiny group of Lamenters that got split up after they got sucked into the Warp. While the Lamenters fought through one direction, they went another on account of being separated and lost as fuck. After popping out of the warp on the edge of bumfuck nowhere, they decided to patrol the far reaches of space, mainly acting as recon for chapters with the forces to do something about it.

Due to their Lamenter tier luck, they end up getting themselves into a plethora of shenanigans, getting their shit beat in but always trucking along to save people. Some of the shit I thought of them to get into so far were

>assisting in the first invasion of Klendathu despite its overwhelming failure
>recon of the planet LV-426 and their encounters with the native xenomorph species which kicked their shit in
>search and rescue mission for federation troopers on the planet SR388, also a failure

Essentially I get to make references to some of my favorite sci-fi shit while playing with the idea of a group of soldiers that never give up despite being near dying out. Of course it's all wip so we'll see what this army even ends up as

Nobody heard the Lamenters check in for a while, so they're assumed destroyed.

Original anon here. Maybe the Lamenters got reinforced /somehow/ so they decided to shovel off a portion of their chadmarines over to [name of chapter] to help patrol the edges of the Imperium with the majority of them joining the main fleet. As for the baby chapter, they would be fleet based, with probably a single main ship due to supply shortages. I wanted the army to mainly be infantry based so that fluff works for the lack of vehicles

My only complaint is not being able to use an Emperor's Champion with this Lamenters successor chapter

>>
>>53960508
You are familiar with the Lamenter's lore right?

If they're not completely dead, they're damn close and up to their necks in nids. They didn't make it back to defend Baal. Even TRAITOR blood angel successors made it back and helped.

If I was going to put primaris marines in Lamenters colors, the only "fluggy" way that it would make sense is that they are a new chapter in all sense of the word, they just inherited geneseed and the heraldry of the original Lamenters. Otherwise they're starting from scratch. Not saying that's bad or anything, it would be an interesting bit of lore to see, especially if the Lamenters bad luck shows up with the new primaris version.

>>53960512
I used to do a scheme of blobs of color over the basecoat then going back and stippling in the base color over the blobs. Makes for a cool camo effect. You could probably try something like that.

With all of this custom chapter talk, I was wondering something.

I'm still relatively new to 40k, so how would you stat up a custom chapter? Do you just pick something close to what you want and base it off of that? Do you have access to chapter specific stuff like the Emperor's Champ because your fluff justifies it? Is there a guide or something?

In the new imperium index 1 (all about space marines) has various rules for different famous chapters and their unique units. Id say pick it up and if any of the chapter specific rules take your fancy just make your own chapter and use those rules, as long as they are using the correct points values and follow the rules I cant see anyone arguing with you just because your space wolf like army isn't painted the right way.

Also force organisation charts give you different shit too so you could theme an army around that. (ie have a heavy support based army with rules that compliment that loadout to up your dakka).

I honestly wouldn't worry about having your lore being absolutely 100% withen established lore. There have been so many chapter foundings that you can justify anything. Just go with something that you personally find fun and interesting, its your army, you spent the money and painted them so fuck the haters. Live the dream battle-brother.

I really just want to get on the table because my lack of painting skills have really prevented me from getting actual games, but I'm confident I can paint a Grey Knights 'scheme' over them with a bit more detail and have them look table top

The Lamenters would never in a million years be allowed to have a successor chapter by the Administratum.

Then again, it's your boys, so it's up to you
>>
>>53960971
Like >>53960938 said, I might just have to adjust or ignore some lore if it comes down to it. I'd like to adhere to it as much as I could but we'll see how it ends up. Regardless, I'm looking forward to painting the new Primarines

> As long as you don't try to be one of those guys who changes chapter rules choice every other week

There is an exception to that rule. As long as you army is painted well you can change your chapter tactics every game for all I care. But if you did the whole '3 colours and a wash' shit then you can fuck right off.
>>
>>53961003
just because they're similar to lamentors doesn't mean they have to literally be their successor.

theres a thousand chalters but GW has only ever fluffed out a couple hundred at most. There's plenty of room for you to homebrew what ever you want.

>>53960928
Looking good mate. As a personal nitpick of mine maybe add a little more colour to the sword hilt, it sticks out to me as its a bit flat.
>>
>>53960956
Light red or crimson
>>
>>53960466
Noice. Shame I went off brand a couple of weeks ago for £20. To be honest I'm happy with it though so no biggy. Anyone else should jump on it though, they're so useful.

Is /tg/ the right place to post and talk about scale military models?
>>
>>53961365
Yeah, pretty much.
>>
>>53961365
What a nice T-34
>>
>>53961365
absolutely! stunning work!
>>
>>53961365
You are certainly not at the wrong place since many in here build models too, but there is also a scale modellers general on /toy/.

Lovely T-34 btw, 1/35?

Cheers. 1/35 yeah. Got a Sherman just about finished too. Needs a little more weathering. Panzer IV ausf F2 next.

I'll check out /toy/, thanks for the heads up.

These are, in my opinion, my best two models that I have painted. Can I get some comments? No bully pls.

Excellent work m8. Our liege the Great Miguel is pleased.

Try giving white and drab more depth by making shades and highlights more contrasting. Also make the scarf red to stick with the lore. Other than that, good work. When based they would definitely be bombin'.
>>
>>53959873

Mentioned that throughout the posts tbf. It was something I did to make my regular marines a bit beefier next to other models. But I'm tempted to tear them off and just have them on regular bases because of the scale issues with Custodes and Orks.

Looks from what I can tell
>GK terminator torso
>Bloodletter legs
>Warp Talon Arms.

>>53952033
Is it kuh-zurkin or kasr-kin?
>>
>>53959027
How to do the blood effects on the claws?
>>

fishing line or hair + watereffects and ink or a technical paint or a paint like tamiya clear red.
You can build the drop up with paint or watereffects.

Depending on what you use and how and where it is added to the model it may not be such a great idea on gaming minis though.

The Latter. They are elite troops from Cadian Kasrs, afterall.

An *excellent* suggestion, sir, with just two minor drawbacks:

1). We don't have a force-field, and ...

2). We don't have a force-field.

Now, sir, I realize that technically, this is only one drawback, but it's such a *big* one, I thought it was worth mentioning twice!

Give him a bath in denatured alcohol (Or 70% or higher isoprol alchol) and take a toothbrush to strip him. Use a can of airisol primer. GW's are okay, but there's many different types. OR get an airbrush, because that primer you used was an airbrush primer.

>>53954679
Astral Knights are underrepresented since, you know, they're dead. So I'd say go with them.
>>
>>53959686
White + agrax earthshade for a nice dirty ork boy.
>>
>>53959012
There's tons of videos on how to do them anon. You can even do them very dark grey if you prefer.

Slowly finishing these Moria goblins. Still got faces and leather to do and final basing.

I'm also contemplating on whether I should abandon citadel/he paints and move to army painter or reaper. What are some pros and cons to them?

posted this the other thread but I'm picking up the models today so I'll be posting some actual minis soon and this is the scheme i'll be doing.
From a fluff standpoint think it's too snowflakey to say that mydudes are an exorcists successor chapter?

That's the beauty of the coin flip. You don't know for sure which decision you want until the moment the coin lands, especially when it shows the "wrong" side.
