i dont have a pdf, but some tips:

make sure the horse is still as possible while you paint it. i've found feeding it helps

brush their coat before applying the primer

they dont like the noise from air compressors, so use a brush instead of an airbrush

I've decided on doing a display for my Thousand Sons for armies on parade later this year and I was thinking about it at work because I need something to make columns and ten minutes later I found a bucket of broken granite slabs that had some small rectangular columns mixed in with it that'll work great.
How the fuck do I cut granite?
>>
>>53772265
do you have a chop saw? get a diamond blade and depending on how small, you are going to want to use a guide to help cut so you dont get your fingers near

you could also use a circular saw, depending on how thin it is, do you have a pic of what you want to cut, or dimensions?

I'd suppose not very well, but that might depend on the kid of bark they have. On the off chance it may peel I'd probably peel it myself before drying, priming and painting.
Or I'd just make a wire tree from scratch, if this is what you need a painted twig for.

So. I'm having to prime in 80-83 degrees with 70-90% humidity. This is a GOOD DAY for me. I can NOT do it indoors as I can't ventilate.

Is this good enough? Did I over-prime? Paint is still wet. I know I didn't get 100% perfect coverage but I'd like "good enough for table top" this weekend - I can strip in acetone later.

This is my first time at spray-priming in 12 years and I can't remember if this looks to thick or just fine.

Still wet. Flash is on. They look WAY smoother in person - but want an opinion.
>>
>>53773260

It's too thick on the bolters. You don't actually need 100% primer coverage. As long as there's enough paint flecks to cover the material and there's no huge patches of bare metal.

It's hard to say though since metal miniatures scratch so easily regardless of primer quality or coverage.

I've given up on spray primers and switched to a high quality brush on. I always looked down on gesso users for years but the past 6 months finally broke me. I don't use gesso or that Vallejo garbage though, I bought a bottle of Stynlyrez.

I enjoy others remember that. But to be fair, I'd imagine if you took longer than 3 minutes (like I did for that picture) and you used thinner, neater lines and cleaned up a bit, you could use the technique for just about anything. And from a distance, on small models, if you're just adding checkers to your mooks I really don't think it would make much of a difference.

>>53773323
So were you going for Asian or "Sisters of Our Matyred Cheeto"?
>>
>>53773491
Not my paint job.

Trying to compare someone else's to my priming. Trying to determine if I over-did it... all the details are there, all the hair recesses and hosery... but the bolter looks thick.. but other bolters on other paint jobs look thick.

Blonde and brunette Asians? Or is it because they look like Reimu.
>>
>>53773516

They might have overprimed too. Compare it to a bare metal bolter. Chances are even if the primer is too thick, it's not a disaster "filled in the details thick". You might have just made the bolters look less crisp, it's not a huge deal. The only real pain is that if you try to sand down the primer it'll probably go to bare metal unless you used a really good and sandable primer.

First, get highlights on that shit. The red and the blue of the tau head desperately need it. After that, blacken those lenses and tips of your gun barrels. Put a little bit of white at the bottom left of the lenses and a tiny dab at the top right.

I see you did wash some of them at the cloth parts with I'm guessing Agrax Earthshade or something comparable, but you need to hit the reds and the skin with a heavy black wash. It's going to dull your white, but honestly, what I would suggest is cleaning the white up with red, doing the highlighting and then wash, and then thin your white very heavily and dab some in those white recesses like a wash to brighten it back up again if you want it very striking like it is now.

Over all, it's alright, yeah. Nothing I'd complain about once you get it done. Better than seeing a big grey blob of plastic on the table as the tau-player stereotype tends to go, that's for god damn sure.

I do

Bugmans glow
Layer of cadian flesh tone
50% watered down reikland fleshtone
Layer of Kislev flesh
Light layer of flayed one flesh on raised surfaces like the brow and bridge of the nose.

I only do one layer of each; you get some nice layering and build up of different tones in different recesses.

Looks nice, but i would recommend get some lighter color on the green tubes, and a brighter red on the edges of the armor. Basically get some colors.
Also i dont think that using the same color on armor and base is a good idea for general composition. Actually some green grass would serve as a connection between te base and the tubes and that would make the overall model look more interesting

Is there a golden ratio for thinning Citadel with water and a brush? I've heard about getting it to the consistency of milk, but I find that hard to visualise.
>>
>>53778284
Put a brush full of paint on your palette, dip the brush in water, stir in paint.

It should be plenty thin enough. Unless you have a wet palette, don't premix large quantities of paint or it'll just dry and ruin the point of watering it down in the first place.
>>
>>53778284
If you still struggle with thinning paints, try using acrylic medium as it's easier to get a consistent result than water.

Also don't expect thinned paints to look good on the first application, it should ideally take 3-4 coats before you get a solid base for most colors.

Sorry if it seems like I post stuff without making much progress. Work has been busy so I don't have much time to paint for now.

Think I finished the glazing, just need to finish up on the belt area. Will do the highlights after and for now will just use Troll Slayer Orange and glaze it back to Mephiston. Also using 1:1 of Flash Gitz and Troll Slayer to put on the corners.

Not sure if I want to try and glaze in some darker reds for some shadows. I don't think this is a bad glazing job for a first timer but that helmet is being a real bitch to work with.

Getting the Dark Imperium box set for the Death Guard, and I'm currently thinking about how to paint the Primaris Marines in the box.
I currently collect Space Wolves so they're my first thought on how to paint them but I'm not sure if from a lore perspective my company would accept them into their rout.

I'm currently considering either Blood Ravens (who nicked the technology bound for another chapter)

Astral Claws (a section of the chapter who survived to present day die to convoluted time in the Warp)

Model seems too glossy, maybe it's the metallics you used? Thin your paints out some more. The basing is really cool, and I like your ambition with the model's detail. Aand I just noticed he has an ammo pack for a hand kek
>>
>>53778284

generally you get some paint on the tip of your brush, dip it in water, then spread it around a bit on a palete, or plastic or card whatever. Ive never really been too worried about being pickywith the exact consistency of paint but remember that, mutiple thin coats will 100% of the time look better than one thick coat that leaves brushmarks.

Really you want it not quite so watery that the paint pigments become visible in the water, but not so thick that it globs out in brush lines

Got off my butt and started painting my kitbashed watch captain. Kinda upsetting his tower shield will end up covering most of the detail.

Also built a taurox for my inquisitor. Minor conversion adding the windows, but otherwise pretty stock. Not sure if I'll put the exhausts on since they look kind of dumb.

I think bone or red, like the helmet and the other details.

I suggest you thin your paints and apply more thin coats instead of a single thick one. Also, your hand will get steadier in time so I wouldn't worry too much. Watch some videos from this guy on different techniques: >>53781425

Probably a Heavy Bolter or twin-linked Heavy Bolter, depending on if the FW turret rules are still around.
>>53780460
The main turret is the Stormlord vulcan mega-bolter from the Baneblade kit. It's attached to the Chimera turret base to allow it to spin. Gubbinz from the Chimera, some plates from the Baneblade, and a bunch of wires and cabling from various lascannons were added to fill in gaps and make it more "solid." The turret's "eye," right between the guns, is from the Centurion kit, I think it's a piece of a grav thing, just turned it upside-down.

Another one painting again after many years without doing so.

C&C more than welcome. Thinking of putting her on a grey urban base, with perhaps a yellowish tuft. How would one go about adding greyish dust? Just several dry brushes?

I'm entirely open to suggestions regarding the base, so if you think something else would work better do tell. I'd love to do a snow base but feel that'd be too much white.

IRL looks much better, it must be said. Also, I THINK my paints were thin enough but due to having to come back time and again and again to fix mistakes, it ended up being too much :(

Hey,
posted some necrons (really noob painter) which were actually the first ever minia I painted.
A pal of mine has seen them and since he's in the hobby too, gave me a doombull to paint (according to him he sucks at painting).
Well, here's the result.

Fur and skin is so much harder than metal / armour but I loved the practice I got out of this minia.

Please be gentle, this is the 6th minia I paint.
Tips obviously very welcomed.

As a sidenote, I don't like seeing unpainted plastic on the table, but I'd honestly rather go against primed models than pic related.

I think it's better to first practice on a single miniature or two, and see if you're happy with the results, before attempting to paint the whole squad.

Could go full rust then.
Paint them brown and stipple orange, red and other browns all over them, before adding a few chips with metallic paints.
Could look pretty striking if done right. I imagine very bright sickly skintones would be a nice contrast to that.

My first though was of another paintscheme though.
I think in one of the books there is a picture of a unit with bonewhite armor with streaks of green and brown running over them. That looked pretty great too and used green only for the weathering.
Think pre.heresy Deathguard armor.

Pick a main color, a secondary and an accent.
Harmonize or contrast them as you like.

Before doing any painting I use photoshop to try some stuff out.

In the case of Tyranids specifically I'd just look at some beetles, spiders, poison frogs, tropical fish, snakes or whatever else you can think of as a source of inspiration.

I painted the colors I wanted and then changed the blend mode to color, to adjust the color. For values I just fill the layer with a shade of grey and use multiply.

It may be easier to use an adjustment layer and just change the color mixes in the channels. Use the selective color one for that.
If you use it with a layermask to take out the bases for example it's probably the easier and better looking method.

Painting the colors by hand is just kind of like doing each color the adjustment layer gives you by hand but for certain things it gives you more control or the ability match and mix.

There are probably a dozen other ways to the same thing in PS as well. Those are just the ones that work easiest for me.

It's not straight white, in fact...

It's Pallid Wytch Flesh -> Vallejo Khaki lined shadows -> Pallid Wytch Flesh + Vallejo White -> Vallejo White highlights. I guess I need to learn to leave more of the previous layers visible?

Bolter has had a Nuln wash and does have some highlights, but the colour is rather subtle, and the studs do (or did) have recess shades. Again, perhaps I should learn to leave the lower layer showing through more.

Thanks for the feedback!

>The MIG metallics are an example I can think of.

Perhaps you are referring to an older generation I'm unaware of but their current generation (the one with Atomic Blue and such) can get the same effect as airbrush, you just need to do several thin layers to get a solid coat. Of course it won't be as thin and solid because airbrushes atomize paint, but you can still get a decent solid coat that's not so thick that it covers detail.

One or two coats isn't going to cut it, it's going to be faint or splotchy.

Anyone else get really discouraged when your paint just doesnt go on like you want it to?

Its like im following all the steps of the tutorial but their work goes on smooth with full coverage, yet mine leaves splotches and gaps.
So hard to keep motivated when you've done 2-3 thin base coats but you're still left uneven and dot marks. And when your detail brush either doesnt apply the paint or applies too much and goes over the lines despite meticulously trying to get it right.

So I've decided I'd like to try and make some money on the side by doing commission work. Making and painting minis for lazy shits or those who don't have the time.

Anyone here have experience or advice to give someone in my situation?

a lot of your metals look really nice, especially the feet, really nice job with the metals, cloak looks nice for the most part except the bottom where it looks like some washpooled up and the canisters could be improved. Overall, really noice

The scheme was semi intentional. I sort of decided on red first then realised what the head reminded me of. I don't know if a brighter red would work that well, but the photo makes it a bit darker than it actually is since my lighting is shitty.

I'll probably try and edge highlight the red some which might make it look brighter overall.

I did some work on him last night, added some troll slayer orange (i think) to the elevated parts of the cloak, I darkened the staff, cleaned up the washes, and darkened some of the metal behind his head with washes, so I could add starker silver highlights (not able to see in picture) I also cleaned up the "plasma glow"

Yes i know there is a moldline right there, its too late for me to fix it, but its very hard to see unless you are looking from under the model
