Truly the end of an era. We won't see squat marines on the tabletop in 2-3 years max, screencap this
>manlet marines were somewhat realistic beside valhallans, valhallans were small and thinner than them
>Xbox huge marines make them look like fucking children
Haha! Russian child soldiers go go go!
>>53611074
if that's true then it speaks very poorly of the 40k community as a whole. but sadly it might be right.
if you don't give a shit about your collection of miniatures, the culmination of your personal artistic expression, effort and time, then why do you play a miniature wargame instead of a video game? if the models don't matter and you don't give a fuck and will just ditch your shit for the new stuff (instead of just adding on things, like a sensible company would make possible) then what's the fucking point?
to me that says "40k is filled with half-assed 'hobbyists' who don't give a shit and just want to WAAC", which is pretty lame. don't get me wrong, there's nothing inherently bad about being a WAAC player, but if the entire game is WAAC players then that probably means the game is full of shitty unpainted armies and fluff raping manchildren who create an environment unappealing to non-retards. therefore it's a hobby full of retards and spergs.
>>53611396
Don't believe it. GW loves their Space Marines, and it's going to take more than 3 years for people to stop playing with the originals, if they ever do. They're going to try to push for everyone to change, but not enough will.
>>53611292
So much for that Custodes are shorter nonsense, because even without the helmet I can clearly see that he's slightly taller.
>>53611555
>even without the helmet I can clearly see that he's slightly taller.
He's actually not.
His stance is narrower, giving him height, and his base is actually higher as well.
Flat ground, same stance and the Primaris are a bit taller.
Here are some minis that I have. I can show & tell in a WIP thread, can't I?
This was my best shot at a Palanquin of Nurgle. I put matte varnish on it, but it was still shiny, so I put more on, and then it was a different kind of shiny... So Army Painter matte varnish failed me, after proving so useful up until then. Oh well. At least it's Nurgle
Also, GW removed the rules for Palanquin Heralds. Fortunately, I can just play this as an Epidemius without the tally, or as an Epidemius stand-in. Shame I have to house rules it, though.
Here's a shot of the rest of the gang that I have set up in the volunteer showcase at Warhammer.
Part of me thinks that the bases are too bright. Should I darken them?
>>53611631
It's actually a great idea.
/WIP/ hates work in progress. The only way not to have people scream at you to drown yourself in liquid greenstuff is to post finished models.
which looks better?
I'm finagling around, trying to come up with a Color scheme I like for the release for Nurgle soon, but I'm not sure about any of them.
>>53611738
Bit bland more than anything, maybe something to break up the flat grey? some rocks, etc
>>53611757
What a fucking horrendous model. It may be the worst sculpt from GW in a couple years. Right is better. Rust it up though, DG are often painted too clean.
>>53611738
If you darken them (and to be honest I'd just go either a Nuln or Agrax wash) you'll need some contrast, maybe some flagstones? If you could do near pristine marble that would be a nice contrast.
>>53611790
Can do. If you check out that Palanquin, you can see the level of basework I'm-Oh! You know what? You should see the actual WIPs that I've shelved. Hell, I actually have a lot of WIPs, I just never think about them. Hang on...
>>53611757
It looks like theres a baby in that armour. Also the left one is better.
>>53611757
The second one but with the cloth purple instead of yellow?
>>53611757
I personally like the left one better, the scheme seems more cohesive on that one.
>>53611738
Looking good. I think the bases are just too on the bluer side of grey, rather than being too bright. If you bring them more into the red/brown side with a wash or glaze I think it would be enough.
Pic is mine, I use red, brown and blue in the base.
>>53611790
>>53611825
So I actually own two Greater Daemons, one is Nurgle the other is Tzeentch, and I've gotten more creative with bases as time's gone by, with the GUO there wasn't much room so I just had to make it look like he was sitting on a pile of half-buried debris
Does the GW white spray paint have a regular paint equivalent? I cant see to find a color of white that matches it to touch up mistakes
He's a wide load, so I can really only show you a quarter of the base in any detail. The front's a bit sparse by comparison because there's less room, it's mostly just rocks.
>>53612046
Digging it all the same though, always love a solid ash/debris-type base
This one I'm really proud of. I took the tank trap from that one misc. scenery bag that GW sells, and combined with with a Nurgling I had lying around, and the Brimstone Horrors that came with the LoC...
The other side just has a piece from the old 40k basing kit with this little micro conversion of mine. the spare helmet from the Cadian box on a skull from the new 40k Hero bases.
>>53612075
I should really put some of the basing material on that tank trap. I want it to look like it's been that way for a while.
>>53611757
I like the one on the right, but I would make the armor far more rusted and stained. I love the original Death Guard colors, and so I love plague marine color schemes that recall that, and white/silver armor does that.
>>53611797
Seconded, this model blows.
>>53612075
Nice church. Looks good.
>>53611797
The stick is meh. Head and hand magic thing look terrible. Rest looks ok but not great.
>>53611292
Take a photo again as the mkIII marine only looks half a head taller than the Mordian
>>53612363
The magic I can at least tell what they were going for, but the staff looks so out of place. Cut the flys off and it looks like a wood elf bit!
About to start painting some old Chaos Terminators. I want to go for a porcelain/ceramic armor with evil black oil oozing out (pic related).
I'm dead set on priming black. How do go about getting the white armor? I know I'll need to do multiple layers, but should it be white then white then white, or grey then light grey then white?
Any recommendations (no GW please) for white and/or grey paints? Also looking for some good cold less blingy looking silver.
New to painting:
Which shade goes best for Mephiston red and Balthesar Gold armour, Nuln oil or Agrax Earthshade?
>>53612621
If it has to be one of those two, then Earthshade
tons more to go :< and time is running
>>53612279
>I would make the armor far more rusted and stained
how would I best do that?
I've tried before with it, but it never really ends up well
>>53612560
Over black, I'd do a grey then white, or, you know, just White x 10...

oh. well.

>Primaris Marines are XBOCKSHUEG! Edition!
We really should have seen it coming the instant they gave marines bigger bases. No way in hell GW would ever resist letting the mini grow until it just barely fit the base.

>Mordian
>>53612674
IF HE SHOOTS YA
IT'S GONNA HURT
>>53612723
Primaris Marines fit on the bases well though.
They're taller than Marines, but not much broader.
>>53612721
Please help me.
>>53612806
no, just add thin layers of medium-light grey (celestra from GW), shade the darker parts where shade usually gathers up, then take a one or two steps lighter grey and paint a thin layer ontop of it, perhaps several if you need the effect you want.
Highlight with pure white
>>53612560
Prime Black
Vallejo Game Color Heavy Blue Grey (#72144)
Vallejo Model Color Deck Tan (this is more of a warm light grey than a tan) (#70986)
Vallejo Game Color Off White (#72101) or Rotten White (#72130)
Highlights with Vallejo Game Color Skull White (#72001)
Now I've not tried this IRL, just looking at colors and estimating.

Our lord and savior, Duncan, to the rescue!
Base, wash, highlight, grime dabbing, chipped metal/rust dabbing.
The attached .pdf has the suggested Death Guard pre-heresy color scheme paints, so just fit those in in place of the yellows in Dunc's video.

Why?
Any anons around Cincinnati, OH with an interest in Guard or Genestealer cultists? I've got a few boxes of shit, almost all still on sprue, that I cannot muster the will to fuck with especially after 8th ed.

Try priming grey.
Painted me some Kalabites
Mold line cleanup currently in progress on this Archon.
Painted some Bloodbowl Orcs and some IH today. What'd YOU get up to anon?
>>53611989
Love it. Is that just a combination of washes and glazes over a white primer?
Posted this in 40k general too.
I'm looking to make a counts-as lysander because I'm not too fond of his current model + have a cataphractii termie laying around.
I figured I could pick up a storm shield set from FW, but are there any places that sell 'good' thunder hammers for termies? I want something kind of fancy that isn't just carving the actual fist of dorn off my existing Lysander.
any suggestions?
>>53613972
primed, drybrushed and washed tanks. Currently looking for references and guides for which units served on the German side in Normandy and their armour camo.
>>53611292
Scale is fucked.
>>53614204
I don't get it. What don't you like about the miniature?
I'm getting back into 40k after having quit since the beginning of 5th edition and I'm gonna be going hard on the Primaris Hype-train and making a Primaris Chapter.
Now I'm rediscovering the problems of having to choose a colour scheme all over again. Any suggestions? I'm kinda digging a blue/blue-grey heavy scheme. I used to play Ultramarines (yes, I know, but Blue+Gold is dope) and I'd like to keep near the same colours. This is a quick mock-up of an option. I like the idea of having a gold torso + thigh.
What y'all think?
>>53611396
Primaris rules are crap, tho
>>53613790
Are you on Mars?
>>53613023
Nope.
>>53614344
What about something like this?
The yellow just seems too minor of a color for me in the original.
>>53613843
aren't Archons pretty high-level deldar? because that looks like a sergeant, at best.
>>53613026
Maybe try grey primer? There it wouldnt be too hard to go for black or white.
>>53614554
You know what? I kinda like the idea of the hands being gold, but I'd keep the feet blue.
After looking at the models in person, I can say that the torso is actually quite large in proportion (realistically, for once) and the gold would be nearly 50/50 in ratio if the backpack was blue.
>>53614749
Cool, just throwing out ideas. I haven't seen the models in person yet.
Any thoughts on my scheme?
I know quartered is going to be a pain to paint. But I am not worried about that factor, this is going to be a real small project. Like 5-8 models probably
I posted a thread or two ago about my disappointing first attempt at painting plate armour (the two regular sized models).
I tried to so a second time on my Gregor Clegane model, trying to keep my paint fairly thin, and also starting with a dark basecoat of Leadbelcher + black paint. I then used Leadbelcher + Ironbreaker as the layer. This means I can use runefang steel or stromhost silver as highlights and will have a decent amount of contrast.
Let me know what you think so far. I still have issues with primer clumpiness and my paint constantly drying up as I paint, very persnickety stuff.

Trying out some colours for some chaos. Gems in his chest seems to have gotten damaged at some point, dang.
>>53615473
use that gem damage to turn it into an opal instead.
forgot to mention, cartoon tank is by meng model, other one is "scrap tank" by another company
anyone have suggestion for what would make good bases for this color scheme?
I had an idea to make proper lightsaber blades. Basically I'd a transparent acrylic tube, drill it out, and drain some super thinned white paint into the hole. If my thinking is right, capillary action should draw in the paint and properly opaqe the inside after a couple of coats. Sound legit?
>>53616046
Try it on a necron rod and show us the results.
Doing some Primaris as RG birdboys.
>>53616159
So far so good anon, I'm digging the subtle edge highlights.
8/10 from me, try to be more careful when highlighting the backpacks, I can see some uneven lines on them, as well as on the sergeant's left shoulderpad, but other than that, great job.
>>53615208
Could you explain the thought process behind the creation of this colour scheme? I'm genuinely intrigued.
>>53613972
solid job, anon. how'd you get that sickly green on the claws?

>>53616159

>>53616765
Stores have it.
Batfag here, after a week long break from painting I've finally managed to find a moment to finish the last joker gang member - the clown prince of crime himself.
I've also made a little conversion on him: I really didn't like the way his right hand looked, so I've glued a piece of cut out plastic to make it look like he's holding a playing card.
I think he came out alright, gotta love that devilish grin.

>>53617043

>>53614629
The official Archon kit is essentially the same armor with no helmet, a trophy rack, and a cloak of flayed skin. I don't like the flayed skin cloak or trophy rack so I wouldn't have put that on anyway, and the helmet was never made except as a metal or Finecast bit for a now OOP model. The base model from the neck down is essentially just a Kabalite with a cloak.
Plus, relics are gone now. If I was giving them the Armor of Misery it'd be a lot fancier, but that no longer exists.
>>53616159
I feel like the sergeant is about to tip over and fall at any moment.
But they're painted well. Good job.
Hi, I don't come to /tg/ often so I apologize for the dumb question.
I recently bought a minifig for my DnD character. It is a "Dark Heaven BONES" brand. The box says it is "ready to paint".
Do I need to apply an undercoat layer of spray paint like with my Warhammer figs?
>>53617199
except it has engraving on all the plates + chains + soulstones + extra plating but yeah otherwise the same
>>53617332
No such thing as a dumb question, regardless of what others will say.
Bones plastic doesn't strictly need primer, but I'd recommend it to be safe; some paints don't work as well on its plastic.
>>53617395
The engravings are a concern, yeah, but I'm hoping to make up for that a little bit with freehanding. The only extra plates I see are the hip plates, which wouldn't play nice with the pose and base body anyway.
So far so goodie

Warpstone Glow, Moot Green, some black, a couple of brown washes, and some copper or dull gold

More seriously, the only primaris models that don't look terrible are the basic not-tactical marines. Given what the jump troops, captain, dreadnought and repulsive look like, I'm not certain any terminator equivalent will end up very good.
>>53618926

Thanks. I'll see what I have lying around. Seeds of an Incubi conversion being sown, who knows how that'll turn out. I've probably got knives and a few chains from the Raider kit somewhere that I can look for; that said, I'd rather not make the model too busy-looking.
For the guys that acknowledge that they're average or below painters, how do you keep motivated to keep painting knowing that they could look a lot better,
I have some of the Dark Vengeance set to paint but am scared to paint the Hellbrute/Terminators thinking that it would be a waste to paint such nice models so amateurishly

Just practice and keep practicing/use tips from places like here/youtube/etc and keep working.
and worst comes to worst you can just strip your dudes if you fuckle them and start over.
I do rank-and-file bitch marines first and spend my time with the nicer models just b/c nice models like termies and shit b/c they usually catch the eye
>>53619024
Just keep painting. If you are worried about doing injustice to your nicer models, buy some models that you don't mind fucking up to practice on. My buddy has never painted minis, but bought a shit load of Kingdom Death stuff when their first kickstarter began, so I bought him a Dwarf army box for KoW to paint before he touches any of that.

Any advice on how to a achieve a shiny "black rainbow" beetle shell appearance (see pic related) for nids?
My current thought process is to basecoat black, then make glazes with a little bit of metallic paint mixed in and layer those repeatedly over the chitinous shells, probably finished off with a gloss varnish.

>gold on the armor looks amazing, great job
>hair is spot on, as are the birds
>you have a nice rich red going on the accent bits
>overall nice clean lines and neat highlighting
>the bluish tinge to the steel on their swords is a nice touch
Suggestions for improvement:
>parchment looks a little splotchy for my personal tastes, a little touching up with your layer color would help
>skin could do with another, brighter highlight or two
>white on the wings could do with another clean-up coat/neatness pass
>I feel like Celestine's eyes could do with a stronger effect to make them stand out more

I know I've already posted the other day but I'm looking for some ideas about how to paint her mount, not pictured because I'm in the middle of assembling it, if you're not familiar with it it's just a giant beetle.
I've been thinking about an iridescent blue look, I've never really tried anything like it before and I'm not sure if it's the best direction to go in.
My other idea is to go with something pretty dark coloured so Alarielle stands out more, it'd probably be black or something.
If anyone else has any ideas or other directions I could approach this from I'd really appreciate some ideas.
>>53621668
One of the guys in my group has Alarielle so I know how big the bug is. I think doing a dark blue with iridescence could look really good. Iridescent mediums don't work too well on most minis because they are too small to see the color shifting but her bug is big enough it should work.

Pretty well any closed faced helmet should work fine depending on your end goal. Particularly some of the Skitarii Vanguard/Dragoon Heads have a close to SoB look, and are cheap because the kits come with more heads than dudes.
If you specifically want a female head Victoria Miniatures would probably be my first choice.
If you want to try something more "out there" try looking at Puppets War but be aware their heads are by and large tinier than GW standard (probably more anatomically correct in most cases but it will be noticeable next to other minis).

>>53625344
>>53625278
Copper and what? You need a complimentary color to prevent blandness.
As for your rusted and oxidized look here's what id go with
>heavy wash agrax+reikland
Multiple washes around rivets and places where metal meets metal. Then drag the wash down to blend it out, this will create a runny effect
>light wash Athonian camoshade in the same way, but blend out more
>typhus corrosion
Hit edges you want to rust or oxidize with this. The more fucked up you want it to look the more corrosion you put. Be careful this eats brushes and can ruin detail . This can be blended around the rivets
>drybrush ryza rust+burnt umber (gw and vallejo)
Get a nice orange brown going and a super dusty brush. Swirl around flat panels to create light rust effect. Medium drybrush edges and over corrosion.
>wash rusted areas with agrax+nuln
More brown than black
>light wash camoshade
>light drybrush ryza rust
>LIGHT FOCUSED drybrush of runefang steel/stormhost silver of weathered areas. This should be very sparing
BONUS
Use weathering powders to give better impressions of rust and wear. I myself have not used these but have seen incredible results other people have achieved
>>53625463
What would be a solid complimentary color?
Also shouldn't I use the Nihilakh Oxide?
I'm going to screenshot your post though, great advice.
>>53625344
>>53625417
I'm digging your scheme anon and I think you're doing fine work. However your going for an effect that's best achieved with blending (the orange and blue). If you're doing this by brush it can be very difficult and time consuming. Requiring many transparent layers delicately built up. You can also consider an airbrush to make blending easier (but they can be pricey)
As for getting better your paint is a bit thick. Shoot for the consistency of milk when you thin your paints. It is actually a good thing if your first coat is slightly transparent, it's better to have 10 thin coats to build a nice strong color than 1 thick.
Consider looking up warhammer tv on YouTube, they have tutorials featuring our spiritual liege duncan. The videos are great for new painters and offer tips for veterans, it's how I learned to paint.
Finally this is my mantra "it's going to look like shit until it looks good". Sometimes I'm painting an effect that I just can't get right, or a scheme I thought would be dope just isn't coming out. Sometimes it just takes a simple trick or a new color, sometimes just another thin coat to make your mini look dope!
>>53618668
Calm down Tzeentch
>>53614825
Not bad. Basically the Rogue Trader-era Death Eagles colour scheme.
>>53625526
I could have sworn I typed it, my bad
>light drybrush of oxide
Brush needs to be very dry, work the brush quickly to catch the faintest edges
>focused oxide
Take your smallest brush and paint the oxide onto areas that stick out. Things like armor tips, blades, spears, etc.
>camoshade +corrosion
Lightly apply corrosion around (not on) oxidized areas.Wash around areas you oxidize (not the oxidization itself) with a few coats of camoshade. This will give the impression of creeping decay. For added effect subtly drybrush a few specks of oxide on over camoshade
As for your complimentary color , it depends specifically on the shade and tone of your metal the specific paint to go with it. So I'll just list colors and you can pick the specific shade
>red
>yellow
>black (duh)
>brown (you will need something like hazard stripes to break it up)
>green
>purple (not sure on this one, but might be cool)
>blue (copper is just dark gold desu)
>>53625293
Pretty much what I do. If you want it to look shiny/clean reapply the leadbelcher. It looks a little more weathered if you don't.
>>53625643
I like painting purple. Where would it go on the mini? I've never actually painted Space Marines before--I've only ever played Orks.
>>53625669
Depends where you want the copper. If the primary color is copper I'd paint the purple on shoulder pads (with metal trim) maybe helmets and or backpacks. Bolters casings could also be a solid area.
Choose the areas you want but remember it shouldn't overpower your primary color, keep it noticeable but in the backseat.
>>53625740
Gotcha. I think purple would go nice with the copper and blueish-oxidized look, right? Thanks anon, you've been very helpful and have hyped me for 8th edition that much more.
>>53625755
No problem at all anon! I love this hobby, getting people excited about it and generating a community is what makes this fun for me.
Make sure you post your work!
>>53625845
Oh one last question, what color should I use to prime the models? I only have army painter's green spray, but I could obviously buy something more suited to this purpose.
>>53625892
Black grey or silver.
Black will be the most forgiving.
Grey for more vibrant colors than black
Silver for advanced metal blending (but much harder purple)
Gw sprays are not primer but work fine. I have heard good things about rustoleum but I've never touched the stuff.
>>53625547
Cheers bro. Yeah i started out with milky paint and gradually just lost my mind and started rushing a bit. Ive got loads more to paint yet so ill try blending with brush on my next batch
>>53611989
the great thing about this is that the base doesn't clash with the figures, it feels like the same rotten browny green palette
also of course the colour variation on the figures with the unifying boil highlights is pretty great too
>>53618770
Honestly, for me personally it's probably the Jetbike helmet. Many HQs in 40k have better truescale to them and the helmet is way too large for the rest of the model's frame.
You can't substitute pose for imposition. If that model we're just standing straight up, would it look like something you'd be afraid to fight on the battlefield? It looks just like any other kabalite except it has a sword on it's back.
Bit new at the hobby, really didn't want to pay $30 for a Weirdboy so decided to try and make my own. Pretty happy about how he turned out.
Any thoughts before I prime him? I won a fairly large bin of bits so I have all kinds more I could add.

Looking good, nigguh.

I gave up because I realized my superglue bottle was superglued closed.
Got bored with my studio scheme Ret, updating a battlegroup with something different as a test. Original concept was a Metroid armor color scheme.

Jobs a good'un, boss!
>>53623516
Nice progress, keep it up champ.
>>53626641
Scheme looks cool, but you need more layers than an ogre or onions. Thin yo shit and build up some layers, bustah.
hey wip.
I used to use a colour called catachan green. but that might be way out of date.
anyone know what colour would be closest to it?
>>53627473
Citadel conversion chart says Castellan Green.
>>53627493
oh perfect thank you, i didn't realize there was a conversion chart. thank you for that information i'll seek it out.
>>53623254
you're too hard on yourself, anon. it looks great for a first! keep at it, try to leave more wash in the recesses
>tfw you didn't even notice the scale was wrong on space marines until Primaris but you promised yourself you wouldn't buy any more minis until you finished what you have
>>53611490
It will also take years to make all the sculpts for primaris scale chapter specific units and heroes. The transition is not complete until that occurs.
>>53627473
Castellan green = catachan green bro
>tfw spend half a day painting 2 space marines and they still look shit
>they've already had a good 5 hours in them before that
Being a beginner sucks

BROTHER!?
>>53628414
>still struggling to paint good skin
I know that feel bro
>>53627904
make this a gondola, please
>>53628454
When I share pictures with /wip/ everyone always says to wash the face or do highlights but whenever I do it turns out worse, so I've just stopped doing faces
;-;
>>53628490
My faces are tolerable but I can't get skin to look nice, especially on females. I just wanted to paint up that pin up commissar mini and do it justice
>>53628414
thin your paints negro
think of it more like you're "staining" the model than painting it, you should be building the color, not applying it
that includes highlights
gradually building up the color can create much more subtle gradients and convincing highlighting
essentially, if your first coat doesn't look like the pants on pic related, your shit is too thick
your paintjob should look like shit until you're AT LEAST 3 coats of paint in
>>53625163
It's a kingdom death mini
>>53628519
Well, don't feel too bad. That image, and most of the "painted" examples on that site are digitally coloured.
>>53626376
He's looking a little top heavy. Are those nob legz?
>>53628520
I was highlighting thin and gradual but got lost a bit and went for more contrast too quickly.
A poor basecoat really fucks up the gradual effect as ive come to learn. So now the lit areas have obvious watermarks on em.
Im tempted to just finish these 2 off as my first miniatures and do a better job base-coating the rest.
