Sorry the thread died before I could respond. I'd say instead of completely covering up the auric highlight, leave some of it showing when you do the silver edge highlight so the transition is less harsh.

Never tried linking to a dead thread so sorry if it doesn't work, it's for Chaos Dwarf anon.

>>
>>52259309
I've used strips of plastic blister (leftover form character package) as core for waves. Then I've applied first coat of Vallejo Water Texture on it.
6 hours of drying... and I realized that I should have painted base before in blue/teal/black/grey mix before because shit is transparent and I could see my dirty base. So I painted over that soild texture and applied 2 more layers of water texture slowly filling gaps between plastic blister stips to create waves.

Followed that tutorial:
http://fantasygames.com.pl/how-to-make-splashing-water/
and that helped me to paint water after 1st layer of texture:
http://www.coloureddust.com.pl/2012/12/how-to-make-base-with-water-effect.html
>>
How do I get better at doing simple bases that look good without distracting from the model?

For my first army, Necrons, I just pva-ed the base then dipped them in sand, but in retrospect it looks a bit shit and I'll probably have to go back and fix them some day.

Since then I've just been doing texture paint, shade and drybrush. It's fine, but I feel like I'm half assing it to just do that over and over forever.
>>
>>52259347
I know about lines, I've tried to fix them (looks better than before) but I'd have to paint new one to make it look propa.

There's a thousand different ways to do it

1. Buy pre moulded bases - https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Sector-Imperialis-32MM-Round-Bases - https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/002/420/256/751a87eb5c11dfcf04c6b6d23048ed26_large.png?1407799667

2. Do you own Think about your theme for your army? Are they in the mountains? Snow? Grassland?

There are so so many resources online to help you, youtube vides, step by step tutorials for whatever theme you want. Cork for Rocks or cliff faces, real rocks, grass tufts, resin tree bits, real tree bits, slate from your neighbours drive way..

It's such an expansive question because the spark of what you want is in your own noggin

Why? Because I lament the days when we got 1 hour + painting guides of useful tips, techniques over these useless 90 second tip of the day? When we got a beautifully painted model that was almost on par of the Eavy Metal teams offerings?

washes and glazes, a lot of them. i pick a desaturared color for shadows ans more saturated color for highlights, and one to go in between. also what helps is kknowledge of anatomy and how muscles worn, im a professional illustrator with years of exoerience in anatomy and painting muscles.
>>
>>52260850
Wet palette, flow improver, matte medium, drying retardant, masters brush cleaner, Iwata Neo airbrush and compressor, airbrush cleaning station, nice kolinsky sable brushes...

It depends on what you're painting and your particular painting style but I find all of the above very helpful for my work.

Army Painter primer is fine but be sure to read the instructions as they don't work the same as other spray paints and I can't comment on the Krylon as I don't use it.

Probably black would be a good complement. Monochrome, black, white, silver. Go for a sort of gothic look.

Blood red could also be a good compliment. Sickly green as well.

Pretty classic colors.

Assuming the pose doesn't get in the way, you can get the head off by clamping onto it with some needle nose pliers OR a sprue cutter (careful not to squeeze too hard) and just twist that bitch off.

If it's really stubborn put it in the freezer to crystallize the super glue and have it just snap right off. You might have to reglue all the limbs though as the super glue will be killed throughout the whole model.

So my brother just finished his first ever mini and sent me this. I find it pretty solid, all things considered. Yes, I know lighting and all is terrible, but you know how beginners are.

How'd you rste it? Main critique I have on it is the silver being a bit too thick.

He's considering what to do for his bases, but everything he would REALLY want to do is incredibly difficult and almost impossible for a beginner (like a Necron-style floor panneling to so a rolling pin of). Suggested that going for the old eggshell cracked ground with a green glow might get similar results and look alright.

>Anyone tell me how difficult it'd be to remove a space marine's head from the body?

You might have to sacrifice the head, and be careful or you'll wreck the gorget, too.

Starting with Third Edition models, Space Marine heads are separate bitz meant to fit down into the neck socket and be glued to face whatever direction you think is most dramatic given the pose of the body. That there is so much surface area touching (round hemi-sphere in a concave socket) means you could have a tough time.

>Fairly sure it's been super glued.

This may actually be a blessing. Plastic cement works by melting the two plastic surfaces together, forming a bond that is really hard to break. Super-glue, OTOH, just sticks the two pieces together. You might try putting your model in the freezer. Cyano-acrylate glue doesn't adjust well to the minute shrinking and expanding of frozen-then-thawed plastic, and this might help break the bond just enough that you can get that head off of there.

Quit painting so forcefully and quickly with the brush. After cleaning it, lather it in soap again, but instead of rinsing it off, simply wipe the soap off on a paper towel while forming it into a tip. The little bit of soap leftover after wiping will hold it in a sharp point. Rinse off the dry soap next time before you start painting.

You'll probably get a more useful answer here than in 40K General.

>Are second hand figures cheaper or more expensive than sealed product?

As a general rule, they are cheaper, especially when compared to GW's retail prices. The only exceptions would be models that are limited (see >>52269197), hard-to-find, or out-of-production (OOP).

>Im starting my first army and some of the guys at my flgs offered me some of their stuff, most of it its just assembled but unpainted. So far I have a SC box and some space marines squads. I'd have a hard time paying more than 50% of MSRP for plastic models. They're fairly easy to come by on places like eBay and Bartertown, and I have shops here where I can buy new models in the shrinkwrap at a 25-30% discount. Assembled models I might hesitate on, and painted plastic is pretty much destined for the bin unless it's a really slick deal or a model I really want.

Does the turret come as one large part, or are the gun and/or capacitors separate? Would like to not have to hack the Volkite Carronades free from the dome turret, would be nice to use it as part of a bunker or something for when I get around to building some Mechanicus forts.

Finding suitable long-barrelled burst cannon parts is proving a little tricky. Either going to use Necron Gauss blasters since they look cool or 32 heavy bolters, which would be a pain to get my hands on. Are Tau, Cron or Marine players likely to have any of those spare?

Ah well. Just the gun looks like a decent piece with most of the detail I wanted on. I may chop the front parts off the turrets and put them together over a Promethium Pipe to make the shield generator for the Manta on the top deck, that'll look nice. Thanks for the help.
>>
>>52273048
Thinning your paint means to use water or some other medium in order to improve the flow and not clog up the details on your minis. You want a milk-like consistancy or thereabouts. Do not use regular acrylics. You want to use modelling paints, like Citadel or Vallejo, for example.
>>
>>52273095
I mean, prime your mini and thin your paints, but yeah, just throw paint my dude..

This is focused on GW paints, but I figure if you are a beginner you'll probably buy those anyway since they are easiest to find (personally i think the older how to paint book by gw is better but i don't think it's in the library.
Anyway this covers all the basics concerning cleanup, prep and even has a bunch of step by step tutorials for the most common stuff like skin and metals.
Should be a good place to start from.

I'm getting the Kill Team box together right now. It looks like it'll be a fun time, although I'm tempted to give the Tau a Crisis Suit, since there's a really large point imbalance between the two stock lists.

I finished painting the Sergeant for the Space Marines. I went with Crimson Fists because they seemed like a fun paint scheme.

I'll finish up the rest of the squad this and next week.
>>
>>52273694
I think Rape and phallic imagery are par forthe Slaaneshi course.

The issue will be properly blending the natural and mechanical in a way that doesn't look too out of place in Warhammer, whilst still keeping a Giger vibe.
>>
>>52273823
True point. Guess i might turn down the mechanical aspect and turn more into the body horror route

Arguable. Maybe on bigger surfaces, like vehicles or buildings, but on infantry most of the times it's easier and better to just freehand it.

I'm a fan of Reaper minis for D&D stuff. Their Bones line is really cheap, although the plastic they use is bendy. The easiest way to fix it is to throw the mini in a glass of hot water (coffee temp) for a minute, then pull them out with tongs and bend them to how you want, then plunge them in ice water for an hour or so. Alternately you can just use their metal minis, which are normally $7-10. You might have to use an exacto knife to trim it up a little, plus some super glue to put it in a base.

Painting is easy. Get some Vallejo, Citadel, or Reaper primer, paint the model, wait for it to dry. Then use whatever colors you want to paint it! I'd also recommend using a GW wash all over, then reapplying the brighter colors in the flat or raised areas, so that you get a shadow effect with a lot of definition.

You just need a big brush, a medium brush, and a fine-tipped paint brush. You can get cheap brushes from all over the place. GW and Army Paint come to mind. As does the Reaper 3-brush pack.

For thinning your paints, it is all relative. But I'm partial to 4 parts paint to 1 part water. Using dropper bottles (like Vallejo or Reaper) makes that super easy.
>>
>>52274072
Sorry about the file size. Took it with my cellphone camera and can't do a ton about it.

I screwed up clipping off the resin shoulder pad off the sprue, so a chunk came off. I decided to make dent marks in it with my knife and use it like battle damage. I'll probably add some chipped paint effects to the models once the whole squad is done. Honestly I was NOT impressed by the resin kits. There were a lot of small imperfections and I ended up having to use a lot of greenstuff where I shouldn't have had to.

I appreciate the compliment!
>>
>>52274310
I'm getting really disillusioned with the Bones line. The larger stuff is good, but the normal sized minis are often times just amorphous blobs of undetailed shit.
>>
>>52274520
this. when i started, bones were great because i was terrible. after painting GW and more highly detailed minis for a few months now, it is like pulling teeth to return to bones level of detail.
>>
>>52269085
The correct answer is it's not a primer by the formal definition of primer.

The useful answer is it contains the same adhesion-helping solvents as the white and black spray, but in lesser amounts. It will stick to bare plastic.
>>
>>52274556
>>52274520
They're great for airbrushing a solid color, blocking in a couple other colors, washing, then dry brushing. Assuming you're just using them as a D&D mini.

But otherwise I totally agree. You're not going to get you any modeling awards. But they're like $2 a model for most. That's hard to argue with.

rape/phallic iconography is just too straightforward. Why don't anyone get inspiration from the Hellraiser? Cenobites are literally slaaneshi daemons, you can sculpt a great miniature based on cenobites features, take chatterer head, decorate it with pins, multiple slender limbs layered in black leather, open incisions, rib stretchers, chain bondage, whips and other nasty stuff

Ehh yes and no. It's no denying that Slaanesh is pretty synonymous with excessive sex, tits and leather, but outright giving your daemon a throbbing dick or a travel strap on would be kind of unimaginative. Remember that Slaanesh is born from the eldars obsession with vanity, desire, and perfection. You could incorporate more vain things like polished shining armor, brighter, richer hues, gold and jewelry, maybe soulstones and gems too, trophies, leather straps, etc.

For some reason pic relayed is how i always imagined slaaneshi armor to be like. In the 7th ed chaos codex there was fluff about a slaanesh daemon planet that was actually agigantic humanoid, that had goatmen frolicking through its hair. Fucked up imagery like that mixed with armor expected to be adorned by kings and princes is what i imagine Slaanesh to be totally into. Also look at her keeper of secrets' horse head.

Watch this tutorial for the colours, but remember that they don't have perfect color schemes on every model, i.e. yoi can make a plate or armor darker/lighter, mix it up a bit, like a pauldron, a knee pad or even a greave. But the faceplate should be white, the helmet the same colour as the rest of the armour while the pauldrons are darker than the rest.

Duncan did a tutorial on their armour mere days ago. Look it up on their fb page.
