Two questions:
1. Has anyone ever made their own transfer sheets with a ink printer?
2. Does the forge world MkIV Dreadnought come with the body crest pictured on forge worlds website and a alternate one like in pic related? Or is it just the one on the website?

Hey guys, I'm new to painting and I apologize for the paint job on pic related, but I've never made a Space Marine chapter before (never played Space Marines at all actually) and I wanted to see what you guys think of my paint scheme. I haven't decided on a chapter badge yet but I was going for an 80s 40k kind of feel, as this is a test model for some Rogue Trader-era marines I have on the way.
The scheme, if you can't tell due to the poor lighting, is halved; the right half is yellow, the left half is black. The helmet is baby blue with a white stripe in the middle. The bolter has a red plate on it and the chest insignia is a goldish bronze.
The name of the chapter is still up in the air, but I'm kind of liking "Space Paladins" for the simplicity, and it sounds very 80s to me.

tl;dr, what do you think of my scheme and what would you change on it?

Anyone done anything interesting with Anvil Industries Regiments conversion kits and Imperial Guard?
I've bought guns from them before, mainly their firestorm carbines for inquisitorial acolytes with stormbolters but with their new trench fighters range has got me tempted to grab some stuff to add some variety to my army.

Alright, first progress on that huge-ass AdMech Mace/Cane. Skull is not attached yet. Unsure if and how much extra decoration and McGuffins I need to make this look like it's a Power Mace.

Was thinking about adding a few of the Electro-Priest wrist electro things onto it below the skull, though not sure if thats enough. Other idea was adding same Priests' backpacks to the back of the skull or dome cables leading...somewhere?

I really need some more input for this.

Maybe you guys could help with this, I'm bad at eyeballing what colours I would need to replicate this colour scheme, and was hoping for some advice.

Obviously black and gunmetal going to be required, but would you say that that shade of gold is Liberator Gold? Also, the thing that's been bugging me the most is that the 'black' looks a lot more like a really dark grey in the picture there, or would you just say that is artistic license to make things appear better on paper?
>>
>>52283990

>>
>>52283990
Many times 'black' is really just very dark grey. Could be that mixing something line Eshin Grey and Abaddon Black could be a decent idea.

And I'd love to know what Citadel gold/copper has that hue, too. Everything I know is shiny as fuck.
>>
>>52284014
Not a fan of the blue personally but it looks good with the wings and if it matches your army cool. Cant fault the model itself but i would paint the base, imo unpainted bases look out of place
>>
>>52284045
Checking the compatibility chart it says Auric Armour Gold is the 'same' shade. I have that for the standard colour scheme anyway, and now I kinda want to try out the alternate one even sooner than I meant to (want it for the Hetaeron Guard).
>>
>>52284045
this

you can not shade black,so most painters use dark grey
>>
>>52284200
That sure doesn't look like the Auric Armor I remember, at least. Godspeed to your efforts, anon.
>>
>>52284014
I dig this a lot. NL DP counts as, I take it? The blue and purple might look better matched if they were either a bit closer in color or a bit further, but as above, I dig it.
>>
>>52284392

Indeed. My wife said the same thing about the purple. Going to hit the tips with the airbrush I think.
>>
Posted a few days ago in a /WIP/ thread, didn't get an answer, let's see if that changes this time.

I'm starting a 30K World Eaters army. So far, I have Kharn coming from FW, and I'm going to pick up a box or two of BaC from my local FLGS and throw away all but the models. But that only gets me so far into the army. Does anyone have any 30K World Eater stuff they'd part with? Painted, Unassembled, On Sprue, Forgotten in a corner. . . doesn't matter. Just looking to get the Legion started without paying FWs shipping fees.
>>
>>52284421
Solid idea. I would either weather the armor or add something to break up the blue just a touch more. The colored spikes and leather is nice, but it needs just a touch more to break up the big block of blue.
>>
>>52283081
Touch the thing you want to photograph so that it focuses there. Don't zoom or get too close to it. Use a photo editing app to crop it and embiggen.

>>
>>52284497

>>52284511
Every time I've went to Chinabro it's like 14 hours after they've been shut down or in between runs and not making more for a while. And second hand sites are normally pretty bad miscasts or third party bits being tacked onto GW torsos.
>>
>>52284511
are there any good second hand sites?
>>
>>52284597
Not that sell 30K stuff. At least not reliably.
>>
>>52284619
>not reliably
That's the name of the game when it comes to shopping for second hand stuff. You get what you want at a great price, you just don't get to choose when you can actually buy it, sometimes it works out though.

>>52284597
Gumtree if you're in Aus/UK/a couple of other Commonwealth countries, otherwise I dunno. eBay too I suppose but the prices tend to be a lot worse on there for the benefit of a greater supply.
>>
Pretty minor conversion but it's my first attempt at altering a model. Not a huge fan of the dumb looking ogre faces and I have a shield fetish, thus this came about. What do you guys think?

Why do Knights always look either super stupid or super cool in photos? I'm gonna guess that the higher the angle of the photo, or the more the legs are viewed straight on to see the dumb splayed V monopose, the worse the model looks. Photos that are shot level or near the ground or hide the leg V make the Knight look really good.

Advice on how to paint the gribbly bits on Plaguebearers? The intestines and mouths and stuff I can do happily enough, but there are plenty of sores or raised areas that really should be painted, that I'm a bit scared of.

I would prime white, then start by painting the whole thing yellow. After that work in orange around the middle section onwards, and then red at the last third. Finally drybrush black at the topmost parts and then a little dark grey at the very very tips of the flames to give a highlight to the smoke.

What are you actually using it for? Strain hardening (the phenomenon that causes wire to become more brittle the more it is manipulated) is a reality of the physical reality we live in, if you want a better suggestion than metal wire you need to be more specific.

I'm customizing my Wraithknight with a Long braid based off pic related.

The Braid will be made from a old wig I had laying around ideally braided around the pose-able 'core' but I want to be able to pose it depending on what pose I set my wraithknight to as I'd like to make my knight very pose-able

>>

It's okay to admit you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.
>>
>>52289015
There's a boatload on youtube. You're pretty safe with googling "how to magnetise an imperial knight" or whatever kit you're building. It's definitely worth reading up on what size of magnet you'll need ahead of time, as you want something with enough strength to hold a pose/not fall off.

If you're just doing regular infantry dudes then 2mm x 1mm magnets should be fine. 3x1 if you want to be safe and the joins are big enough.

>>52283168
I'd add a little more silver in if I were you. Pick out the belt, a few details on the helmet, etc. Nothing major, just a few things to break up the red and yellow a bit.
>>
>>52289040
This

That anons model has 3 stages of highlights and the model transistions from light to dark and is nearly shaded and cleaned up

The helmet doesnt look like chalky shit wich is usually what happens when people paint yellow

To me tabletop standard is a term used when someone puts in the minimum effort into a model just so they can play with them. Its obvious this anon put a good amount of work into this model.
>>
Giving a call-out now:

If any anons out there have yellow armies (Imperial Fists, Lamenters, Eldar, etc.) done with airbrush, post that shit.

For some reason, that dawn-yellow color is the absolute best for showing off airbrush basecoating and transitioning techniques. Looks immaculate when done well. I want some example pics.
>>
>>52288512
God those gaps are horrible
>>
>>52289152
I think tabletop standard is such a broad term it's hard to define. For me it goes

>tourney standard
3 colors and a wash
>tabletop
Model holds detail from 12+ inches away. Based, washed, highlighted cleanly. Base is minimal
>high tabletop
As above but model retains detail at 8 inches. Advanced techniques like blending, osl, and the like are showcased. Base functions as a grounding point for model
>display
All of the above to a masterful level. Transitions are smooth and tasteful, glow effects are bright, highlights crisp etc. Advanced techniques like NMN and 3 color transitions showcased. Base functions as a display piece. Retains detail at 6 inches or less

>>52289302

I don't think many people are going to pay for video tutorials alone, given the ubiquity of free ones. Miniwargaming has their subscription service, but that includes tutorials, battle reports and all sorts of other stuff, all at a relatively high production value.
>>
>>52289691
I mean, patreon tends to be oriented around fan support. Presumably if you made good tutorials, your fanbase would want to help improve production values and help afford tool for more advanced tutorials.
>>
>>52289691

The only other thing that can help you out is personality. If people give a shit about you, as a person, then that will likely result in more crowdfunding bucks, but doing that as a one person is difficult, especially if you're just starting out.

Also, most people/place that go onto Patreon are already established. People who come out of nowhere and instantly go to crowd funding are looking at a couple of dollars a month, maybe.
>>
>>52289650
>Make a youtube channel
>Get subscribers - not an easy thing for something as niche as painting little plastic army men
>retain said subscribers over a peroid long enough for them to become involved
>this means REGULAR content of steady or improving quality
>introduce patreon
>enjoy your 200 bucks a month that pretty much instantly go away as soon as you stop making videos

Not to mention that, in order to get people to even give a fuck, you'd need to be godlike. I mean Painting Buddha is amazing and he made the switch at like 30k subs.

So I rebased fatty, from 60mm to an 80mm base. Had to basically sand away the existing base, no hope of just removing it. Vallejo texture paint is nearly impossible to work with neatly so a bit of retouching to do but I need to do loads to him anyway, there's a lot I'm not happy with.

Went mould line hunting with the Daemonprince, think I've got them all this time. Not impressed with the primer so I may strip and reprime instead of just patching him up.

I am currently conflicted in what I want to do in painting. Right now I'm looking into starting a Death Korps army, at least buying small bits for it at a time. However, the price and quality of the models mandates a paint job far beyond what I am currently capable of. I have plenty of Empire fantasy models, some orks and some skaven to practice on, but I'm pondering just what is the most cost efficient option between practicing to that level and just finding a comission painter to do the job. I follow the Great Duncan's advice, I thin my paints and get the finest tip I can on the brush, but still I am far from any kind of quality, and the paints and brushes stack in cost as they run out, get old, break, Etc. Where can I find someone to paint it all and roughly how much would it cost? I know people will say just practice, but I'll be honest, painting is like the one part of the hobby I don't enjoy.
>>
>>52293531
Having an army painted is not cheap. Neither is buying a FW army in the first place though.

Anyway, just how terrible are you?
Cause even with a coat of Primer and a bunch of washes FW models should look decent enough, cause they got a shitton of detail in the sculpt and the wash should bring that out for you.

Maybe you just need to change your approach to painting to get most out of the models.

Picked up painting for the first time in a year or so, again. I really do not enjoy painting that much, but I know I must do it. Yet I always end up taking my sweet time and I constantly have to fight my own lack of patience.

Fighting my OCD too, as I always find some detailed I missed or didn't paint well and I think "amateurish". Set out to paint 2 custom crypteks (essentially necron warriors with extra bits) and it took me 3 hours to finish half of each (took a while to dry and I keep coming and going to PC). I did a dark brown undercoat, then the brass for flesh. Could've saved time just putting on the brass straight on the black primer, not like you notice a difference, but it's not the "proper way" to do it. I'm too stuck in doing things the right way.

How do you conquer an obsession with getting everything about a model perfect in terms of details and clean-up?

I'm not duncan-tier and I don't care to be. I just want tabletop-decent quality and to be able to be happy and cease my autism on the rank and file. I see one TEENY TINY dash of paint somewhere it has no business being (like getting some blue from armour on a joint which should be black f.ex) and I start obsessing.

I want to only allow myself this detail-whoring on centerpiece models and HQs. This is legit killing me, please advise.

Maybe add a bit more cream color with a brown pinwash to define the skulls more
>>
>>52298627

I have this exact same problem and I simply embrace it. My army may be tiny and my progress slow, but the satisfaction that my completed work is done to the absolute best of my ability is great. I never get an OCD itch looking at finished models and think "I should go back and touch that up" or "I could have done better."

This method only works because I play an elite army and my painting level isn't super high, so it's realistic for me to paint every basic model at 100% effort.

I paint and model as a hobby, not as a chore or requirement to play the game.

I wish I could use this but I have several things that get in my way.

>Have 4 armies, 3 at 2K and 1 at 1.2K
>I take such huge hobby breaks that looking at my necrons f.ex with my "current" paintscheme, I see missed moldlines and shit
>I always think I can do better and am rarely satisfied with my own standard so I keep going back and doing something over
>I am in the hobby mainly to play. I enjoy converting a good bit but painting is tedious at best and I wish I didn't have to do it.

I'm currently doing up a few Tau conversions and then it's off to paint a shitload of foot infantry. Then my next army is to revamp my Thousand Sons, which includes stripping and reposing 16 old half-plastic/metal rubrics.

The shitty part is even if I was filthy rich to commission someone for them, I still wouldn't cause my autism wouldn't let me live it down, lel.

The main thing I've tried to do to unify them and keep them neat is to use very simple hold unifying schemes on everything that isn't their normal skin. So all the pustules are the same bright yellow, all the gore is the same simple bright pink, all the horns are gloss black, all the bases are simple and the same etc. So actually there are a lot of identical elements on all of them which I think ties them together.

those look pretty good for airbrushed OSL

airbrushes generally do shit work for OSL, they work ok for zenithal though

the problem is they dont accurately or naturally light up the surrounding area, good osl needs to be done with a brush and should generally focus on edges a lot more than surfaces, unless the surface directly faces the light source

i thought about marking your picture up to elaborate, but im too lazy. anyways, yours still look pretty good regardless, i'd be happy putting those on the tabletop
