Weapons are typically used more as a focus for magic (or a way to express it) rather than for their own qualities in the setting. Mostly because every mainline game has predetermined rules created as an excuse for the gameplay itself, but partly because Youkai basically can't die to mundane weapons no matter how many tiny pieces you cut them into because they're primarily spiritual entities, so they'll always come back. There's also no reason to use weapons on humans when anyone who would be going around trying to kill humans could just use magic instead.

There are weapons that are still dangerous to just about anyone in the setting like Highlander pointed out, but they're few and far between compared to most of the cast just shooting vague magic bullets at each other for 99% of their screentime.

The magic they use in the games is basically like playing dodgeball. It hurts if it hits you, but it's explicitly non-lethal and anyone has a chance to win against anyone else if they're good enough. If people were using real magic, conflicts would be very bloody and end very quickly most of the time. Weapons wouldn't really change anything by themselves because they'd be outranged pretty much all the time and thus totally worthless unless they can also shoot magic, or the person using them is really good with them, or they're like Gungnir and just never miss if you throw them at someone.

I'm not against weapons in the CYOA personally. I mean there are some cool weapons in Touhou as it is, though they're mostly lifted from other media but that's Highlander's thing anyway. Half of their effectiveness is how creative the person using them can be.

There are plenty of choices, it's just that combat is not a large focus. There is a build path that makes you powerful and removes the spellcard rules but the details of your strength and abilities are entirely left to the player. The cyoa is about getting to go to your own ideal gensokyo, whether it be for lewd, comfy, or fun purposes. The dark options are there, but it's not supported as well as the other stuff.

I did have critique saying the companions all fall into certain categories (unintentional) and tried to fix it, but i guess there's only so much you can say in that small box.

I was thinking though, i could always double the number of companion pages and then double the detail each companion receives.

The way i think it makes sense is to think of it this way:

>fate puts plans into motion for enemies to fight you
>don't pick enemies
>fate snoozes, enemies can decide for themselves, if they even know of you

For instance, the Arch Lich is your enemy because your choice of lair is an incursion into their territory. If you don't pick Arch Lich, it's not.
However you can still trespass into their territory. You could also get in touch beforehand and end up completely avoiding any misunderstandings.
Iem’Ha’Tapihr was awoken because you fucked up. If you don't pick it then you didn't fuck up that time. It doesn't preclude you from fucking up in the future, and as immortality is seen as a necessity, you probably will fuck up in the future.
So on, so forth.

Cross-resourcing imo is not really a good idea depending on the context, especially in /CYOAg/. Remember that half the people here are power trippers who would rather min/max than having camaderie.

Some CYOA sections have to be independent from other sections. Companions and powers sharing the resource is basically inviting all of the autists to only pick powers, as an example.

That would be neat especially if just to breathe more life into the companions, honestly I powergamed my first build by not taking companions but after re-reading the options I enjoyed mightily the chance for apprentices (like shasha) or funny/non-serious companions (laughing man, Not!bane, sho'khah) and it'll be something to look forward to if you can expand upon them.

Magical muscles mostly, but not exclusively. We got 50% more spell slots and its much easier to build overpowered combos with them (as schools other than main one do not require their low tier spells to learn high tier ones). Adversaries got stronger to compensate as well. All in all, its good as it allows more freedom to the players, but slowly creeps into becoming a power race.

Creep as creepiness. Its just that most teachers moved from "beings you could learn a lot from but won't bet on your life afterwards" category into "relax, they are not so evil, especially to their disciples".

Excellent idea, I fully support getting more information about companions! Some would greatly benefit from it, others may open from surprising side. And it will blur "categories" somewhat.

I'm writing the new CYOA as we speak, but stupidly, I'm getting stumped because I can't think of an example Combo. Really, my OCD's the main thing delaying this (well, that and general laziness and a HUGE helping of procrastination).

Still, I should be able to finish the Augmentation Category before taking off for the day (my timezone).

Right now I've got 10 Categories: Augmentation, Alteration, Manipulation, Magic, Mental, Skills, Sensory, Movement, Defensive, Meta, Quirky and taking it to 11, there's Ultimate, which are unattainable powers. Also, maybe Package/Archtype Powers.

His mind and will broken and his body morphed and shaped into a hulking beast. But in anguish John discovered something. Or specifically, discovered someone. He summoned his avatar, The Unseelie Fey for the first time. He wished it would make the pain go away.

So it did.

Now John is healed. His disgusting new Case 53 form purified into a righteous force of nature. His mind simplified and soothed by his Unseelie master and caretaker. Life is simple now that he serves as his Fey Druid's animal companion. He loves his master, and his master loves him.

You will find the Unseelie Fey rejuvenating broken land, healing hurt animals and cleaning pollution; creating beautiful gardens and punishing those who damage nature.

The world trembles at her punishments.

I've always wondered about taking the time and sitting down to make cyoa where through some alignment of the stars or other bullshit, an entire race of fantastical beings appears with you as the keystone.
Elves, Fairys, Satyrs, Alarunes, Serfs, Merpeople, something obviously not human but still humanoid enough to be relatable. You'd pick traits and abilities, general themes and tones like their intelligence/instincts and overall abilities, perks or changes to yourself from the link with them while gaining or spending points changing their needs around with things like
>Loyalty to you
>Ease of bringing/making/birthing more of their kind with or without you
>General reaction from the rest of the world
>Special requirements in diet/climate and so on
>If they have a world and history of their own, and if so if it's accessible.
>Any special resources they can bring to the table like healing or youth potions or super conductor material
before figuring out and picking how the next couple decades would go.

Might get the urge to put the effort in someday, but I'm less than creative when it comes to the specifics for these things.

I'm thinking necromancy, in it's most blatant forms, is mostly frowned upon everywhere. The Angry Mob drawback seems to show that the average person in this world will not simply accept it as alright.

But, on the other hand, there are a lot of lines in this that show that the upper crust and many others are more than willing to make use of 'some' necromantic spells that benefit them, their line and their work. Detectives, investigators and more make use of certain Blood Magic. A bio-necromancer could make a fortune simply being a healer/surgeon/plastic surgeon or just supplying super-roids to their patrons or just those that can afford it.

So, my views are that if you can reasonably hide what you're doing, or only make use of some spells here and there, you should be able to fly under the radar.

Incidentally, how does everyone feel about these as tank stats?
- Armour (how well it takes hits)
- Tactics (how well the tank detects enemy forces as well as co-ordinating with allied forces)
- Speed (how fast it moves and dodges)
- Handling (how well it copes with terrain)
- Accuracy (how often it hits the mark)
- Range (how far away the cannon can hit reliably)
- Power (how hard it hits)

Seems ridiculously over-complicated if this is your first CYOA. If you've got the willpower to develop mechanics that takes all of these factors into consideration and makes them worthwhile and interesting then go for it, but personally I'm betting it'll end up leaving a few of them as worthless while everyone invests in the ones that are worthwhile, or even more likely people give up halfway through when they get tired of tracking their point expenditure and individual tank stats.
