I need some Volkite paint schemes, my Volkite Carronade is a little big to just paint with the usual copper/leadbelcher I use for plasma guns.
Sadly, I'm short an airbrush, or I'd try some OSL.
Can anyone help?

Heat blackened brass tip with shiny brass or gold rings and a casing that's the bolter color of your legion

Does everyone usually varnish their models?

Is it necessary to dilute it?

I just varnished a model and I'm not completely satisfied with the results. On my test model I applied some of my The Army Painter varnish (anti-shine) but it was too dull for my tastes. I also have Citadel Ardcoat but it's way too glossy.

Applying ardcoat and then mat varnish was better, but maybe I messed it up, because I suddenly saw brush strokes as the ardcoat dried...

Any advice?

My first model!

The more I look at it, the shittier it gets, but it's not garbage at least. Especially the gold and eyes need a lot more improvement. The edge highlighting is somewhat rough as well, and the bolter needs more contrast.

However, other than -fixing- these mistakes, I'm not quite sure how I'm going to -improve- on my next model.

If anyone knows a certain technique or tutorial that this model definitely needs, then I'd love to hear it. Any other critique or comment is also very welcome.

Let's say you had to paint a company's worth of Marines from various eras very fast.

Is Astral Claws the easiest, most striking scheme you can think of?

Fuck off that's brilliant mate.

Your technique looks fine and will only improve with each model you paint, maybe the blending could be a little smoother but that will come with time

You'd be surprised at how hard gold can be to pull of but nowadays dith the new paints I kinda agree. Even more so with GW's new gold spray.

Sounds good, was worrying it would look shit without fancy airbrush OSL. Not a Legion vehicle, it's one of the two main weapons on my custom fuckheug Admech flyer, which is probably going to use the Manta rules.
My last project fell through before money was spent because shipping problems, so I have a little bit to throw at something cool.

Truth there. My Dudes are a Traitor Biologis Explorator fleet, who got shot at a couple times after everything went to hell during the Heresy because they thought we were on the other side - First planet shot because they saw Xana (traitors) markings, second planet because they were Reductor ships and Reductor mostly stayed loyalist.
They assumed everyone had gone mental, found a tasty system with rich mining and interesting fauna and set up shop, and slowly went more heretical as they found more cool shit to do. Basically an independent biopunk Admech nation.

Lets me go completely nuts with converting whatever the hell I want, and because most of it is mainly plastic kits it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the Heresy Mech anyway, and easier to tinker with. £42 for one 100pt beepboop that isn't even all of one troop choice?

Didn't do much today, due to illness. A bit of shading on his front, one or two details and a bunch layers on his back where the colour was looking really off in places. I think I've managed to bring it all back to a similar tone. Based his sword, I think I'll tackle that tomorrow when hopefully I feel less ill and there are fewer terrorist attacks going on.

I gotta say, I'm slightly impressed by your dedication to make the meme happen, but also somewhat annoyed that you bought GW's overpriced "terrain".

Good luck with your work, nevertheless.

>9.9mm by 0.8mm magnets
I'm not sure if that'll hold, you might want to look for something bigger
>>
>>52309522
Well, okay then.
>>
>>52311177
I must say, that wasn't actually an intended meme, I just wanted some battlefieldy boxes and shit to put on the bases, although now I see I've slightly skimped on this one - going to have to spray and glue down some cork and such, since it's currently one crate, one barrel, a beacon, some barbed wire and a dead Son of Horus.

Built it before I heard about the meme, so accidental use of the same parts is accidental.

>not sure if that'll hold
Damn. Not even if I stick two or three together?

Also, side question:
If I use greenstuff to fill holes to sink magnets into, will it hold to the plastic well enough on it's own, and can I just press the magnets into the stuff when it's not dry and smooth over the top a bit to hold them in? Other ones are using superglue, of course.

>>52311483

Don't worry anon, what goes as a "church" on /tg/ is just about a few sprue parts and a piece of plastic card sticking out of the base.

Why exactly would you want to magnetize the legs? I get it if you want to do it for the weapons, but the legs? If it is for transportation, just put a rod in between his torso/groin.

>Advice?

I see the green making an attempt at OSL, but let's talk about the bodies. Is that just Leadbelcher washed with Nuln Oil? Seems like you could use some Runefang Steel or (so aptly named!) Necron Compound to brighten them up on the edges.
>>
>>52311676
>not doing the helmet
>>
>>52311514

I'd say they are passable but there is room for improvement. The green on the thick cable on the rifle and the high lights on the back carapace look inconsistent and patchy, you might try giving them another thin coat to even them out.
With the high lighting if you feel up to it I'd recommend a second high light with a bright green, maybe mix some white with the green you're already using. You could especially use it on the lines under the barrel of the rifle as it just seems like a big thick green line or you could just try and thin that line out a bit.
>>
>>52312050

Yeah it's lead Belcher with nuln oil because I wanted them to look kinda dark and worn. I tried to dry brush with some necron compound, but it didn't seem to make a difference. Maybe I was doing it wrong?

Should I cut back on the green highlights on the gun in favor of typical eshin grey?

It is for transportation, and so the torso doesn't randomly fall off as much as the rest of the store knights during a game. Decided fuck it and secured some stacks of three magnets in with greenstuff. If it doesn't work I can always try that method.

My other motive was to get a little practice with magnets and greenstuff before I start mucking around with arm joints and weapons options, since I've not used them before.

Yeah, I think a think thinner, lighter highlight would look good.

Green highlighting on a Necrons should be fine. If you wanted though you could go with eshin grey on the majority of the black regions then just green on the surfaces surrounding the green plastic rod part of the barrel to give the impression that it's light coming off the barrel.

Looks very good for a first model, very easily 8.5/10. Here is some c&c

1) drill the barrel if you feel comfortable with it
2)some highlights are a tad thick and shaky. This comes with practice
3)the bolter needs a touch-up and highlights
4)the base is a little off kilter. It looks like he's tramping through a field of shattered stones topped with cake frosting.

I usually reserve cork bases for characters or larger models, though if you are insistent I'd recommend using pieces to make rocks instead of entire sheets of stone. How did you do the snow? While not personally a huge fan, GW Valhallan blizzard creates fluffy snow

>>52308913
For advice you should not batch paint until after you've finished say, your 10th single miniature. Things like paint consistency, brush strokes for smooth layers, getting colours right only come from trail and error.

For instance you would probably find a purple you prefer.

There's plenty of shit that looks inconsistent and shit on the model. Pic related. That's horrible layering. Aside from that, the eye effects are not smooth at all, there's no decent blending. The gold is mat and painted too thickly. The bolter is flat and downright bad and so is the face. The only thing I'm proud of is the basic purple blending, and judging from the tutorial video I literally imitated, none of that is particularly complicated. Yet, it IS the selling point of the model.

It took me about eight days to do and spent about 2 to 3 hours a day painting. Still not sure whether I should feel flattered or annoyed that I'm being called a liar for it being my first model. :|

So i noticed Perry miniatures sells command sprues for their Austrian infantry that have moveable arms for 5/6 troopers with iron crest helmets. Then i noticed victoria miniatures sells female troopers, and ordered some to see of their arms can easily fit into place. If so, instead of having to kitbash lasguns, i can just expedite the process with full kit arms and then adding shoulder pads and chest armor. I got burnt out on over 400 skeletons so im just gonna switch over for a moment

So got my first models and some tools getting ready to finally put my first kit together anyone got suggestions.Kit was a starter kit and I went to a local hobby store to get sprue cutters, super glue, pin vice, and a #11 knife and some blades, sanding file boards, some paint brushes and ten paint colors, all Vallejo White, Black, Oily Steel, Gunmetal, Leather Brown, German C Black Brown, Intermediate Green, Flat Green, Scarlet, Flat Red and Flat Yellow. I'm putting together an Ork Starter kit and have been reading a lot and watching videos recently I was suggested https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL10C32CB2CD611E84 and have watched most of it.I'm still trying to learn as much as I can cause I want to be prepared before I start building and painting so if there is anything you guys think i should for sure know concerning constructing and painting I'd love to have some input before I jumped in. Oh and given the color I am thinking of mostly making the theme Evil sunz and maybe some goffs since I think I might have some decent color for a couple boys, but as ive said im not sure cause I really am quite new to painting.
>>
Do people glue together the models before they start painting?

When I was a kid we always painted the pieces first so we could get crannys but I just tried it and it was really difficult to paint the piece while holding it.
>>
>>52315999
Really, REALLY depends on the model. Though largely I'll assemble section, paint those, then put all of it together.

>if there is anything you guys think i should for sure know concerning constructing and painting I'd love to have some input

There's a truckload you should know. Hopefully you've picked it up from watching the tutorial videos and lurking in these threads

>Build sub-assemblies instead of entire models, with an eye towards painting them this way. This is typically more crucial with models with disparate parts like Space Marines, but it will benefit just about anyone.
>Clean the mould lines off the models *before* you prime.
>Consider how you want to base the model. You might do well to attach the model to its base and add some basing material - especially if it's going to get painted - before you prime.
>Be aware of the weather if yer gonna spray prime. High humidity is the biggest factor to watch out for.
>Thin ya paints (milk-like consistency is ideal), get a nice fine tip on ya brush.
>Try not to handle the model while you paint it. Attach it to something else (wine cork, old paint jar, medicine bottle lid, etc.) you can handle instead, and let the brush be the only thing touching the model.

>Do people glue together the models before they start painting?

Like >>52316053 says, it depends on the model. Space Marines are easy to break down into sub-assemblies because their armour is made to be modular like that. Additionally, many such models hold a weapon across their chests, making it difficult to paint the chest plastron if you've already gone and glued the arms and gun on.

Legs and torso on the base is usually a good start for me, although sometimes one or more arms and the head are beneficial ... or unavoidable!
>>
>>52316066
What exactly do you mean by sub assemblies? I do plan on trying to clean the moldlines up as much as I can with my knife and boards. I think im going to do my bases later so for now I should find something to hold pieces in place as I paint them. I think Im going to end up pinning my models when i do paint the bases since I did get a pin vice but im not sure what to use as pins I have read some people using paper clips and others using thin nails i think. It has been raining a lot the last couple days which has made it kinda bad outside which is quite unfortunate. Milk like consistency is something i have heard before but thats actually something thats quite nice to know. I'm not really sure how im going to mount the pieces in place as i paint them yet but ill try to make sure they are secured.I'm hoping I got a good color palette for making my boys ive seen a lot of models built with incredibly limited color palettes and they looked amazing and others that use loads of colors and as well look incredible.
>>
So is Vallejo primer supposed to be easily rubbed off minis when airbrushed on? I accidentally took off a good portion of primer on a metal mini's cape to paint it, and even dragging a fingernail across it with no more weight than gravity peels away a little bit.

I mean, I get that airbrush coats are supposed to be thin, but damn. I'm just so used to rattlecan primer or gesso that it's surprising how thin the actual layer of primer is. Is that normal with airbrushes?
>>
>>52316374
No, but like half the time I hear about Vallejp problems the complainer hasn't read up on how to actually use the stuff; you don't thin it, and you give it a nice long cure time (like a full day before you even think about handling it).
>>
>>52316595
Yeah, I didn't thin it (why would you thin primer???), but I didn't realize it took a whole day+ to cure. I'll keep that in mind.

>What exactly do you mean by sub assemblies?

I mean like >>52316151. If there are parts that are going to get in the way of painting other parts (arms, armour plates, backpacks, big shooty weapons, etc.), try to leave them off and paint them separately before attaching them. This isn't always possible with all models.

>I think im going to do my bases later so for now I should find something to hold pieces in place as I paint them.

I use blue-tack/poster putty to hold the base of the model I'm working on to a large medicine bottle lid. You can see a tiny bit of the blue in this picture.

>I think Im going to end up pinning my models when i do paint the bases since I did get a pin vice but im not sure what to use as pins I have read some people using paper clips and others using thin nails i think.

Paper clips - especially the larger, thicker ones - are usually all you'll need for infantry models, but I also have some nails and larger gauge brass rod should something like that become necessary.

>It has been raining a lot the last couple days which has made it kinda bad outside which is quite unfortunate.

If you can plan far enough ahead, sometimes it helps to prime multiple projects on the good weather days, and then just put what you're not working on back into storage so it's not staring you in the face.
>>

Color spray primer from Army Painter. Dry brush your highlights then detail.
>>
>>52316943
Ok I think I understand what you mean about sub assemblies and that for sure helps.
So in thinking I need to get some cork and blue-tack/ poster putty,
Why the larger thicker paper clips? Is it just because they are more rigid?
I got black primer spray from testors since my local hobby lobby didnt have any vallejo primer, Ive been waiting for good weathing to prime my models
>>
>>52317122
Drybrushing power armor looks like ass, just tried it.
>>
>>52317149
I didn't say it would look great, but if you gotta "power through it" then it's passable.

Otherwise prime 'em and detail 'em and just work your way through highlights at a casual pace. At the very least you can field something painted if you need a break from painting.
>>
>>52317149
>>52317020

This doesn't work on some colors like white and grey, but you can do

Step 1: Spray whole model Army Painter color (let's say green)
Step 2: Spray top of model white so only the top parts are white and the shadows and bottom are still colored. Look up zenithal lightning or zenithal priming
Step 3: Use the appropriate colored glaze or wash (green in this case) and paint it over the whole model.

Bam, instantly good looking and blended model with highlights and smooth color.
>>
>>52316374

Vallejo primer isn't as durable in general because it has no aerosol in it to bind to the model. Metal models also scratch easier. Combine both and you get easy to remove primer. Vallejo also needs like 48 hours minimum before handling and can require up to 2 weeks for the protective resin shell to fully cur.e

For Space Marines, that's just about the right size that will fit the same drill bit I use in my pin vise to drill bolt gun barrels. It provides good stability for things like shoulders and arms when you pin them on.

I know there needs to be a few touchups on the librarian's chest emblems, I need to fix the antenna on the rhino which bent when the rhino was dropped during airbrushing, and there was one part on the speeder which the airbrushing got damaged by a wash that took some paint with it.

Not pictured is the already mostly "done" tactical squad, which need some touchups too. The green on them came out wrong (Think Salamanders instead of Dark Angels) and I am unsure what I can do to fix it. Maybe wash a layer or two each of black and green until it is stained a more correct shade and then do some highlighting?

>>
Man wtf did you people do to learn to paint before the internet. I always see people bitching about peoples work and how its not good enough. Before internet only way to learn was to paint for yourself. Its like most of you wanna rag on people for doing their own thing. With the material out there painting good GW models is a joke yet you treat it like something special and sacred. I'd love to see these critics take on non GW minis without step by step guides, would be hilarious to see.
>>
>>52321926

That's why the paintjobs from the 80's and 90's before the internet are so bad. Golden Daemon winners from the early 90's are literally worse than Duncan's tutorials.

Dip the barrel in a cup of warm/hot water and hold a few moments. After that, take it out and bend it into shape with your fingers, careful not to distort the shape. Hold it there to set up for a few moments, then you're good.

Boom. This works best on resin, but I think you can do it with plastic too if you're careful.

You should basecoat the silver with black and the gold with brown. This helps a lot. Another layer of metals wouldn't hurt either.
And washes on large flat areas rarely turn out well. And the handle on Kreoss' spear looks really bad. The purple looks great though. good job!
>>
>>52323341
Downplay the chemicals you use to Superclean or simple green (depending on what you can find at autozone or the equivilant for degreaser) and use a ultrasonic cleaner instead. You will save time, fingers, sanity, and money.
>>
>>52325195
I'd definitely stay clear of the dry paints if you want to use the color as basecoat.
>And if not does anyone know of a good equivalent in the Vallejo Model Color range?

Vallejo has a color called Dead Flesh which looks really similar, judging by the color chart I have.
Can't compare the colors 1:1, but Vallejo basically used the names as a tongue in cheek way to help you out with color matching.

Black Templars come to mind. Especially for fast painting.
If you are into metallics I'd go with 2nd edition style Doom Eagles though.
The bright silver and piercing red orange they had is probably one of the most striking schemes I can think of.
Another close second would be Sons of Medusa. Neon green marines with white helmets. I was actually tempted to paint my marines like that when I got into the hobby, green being my favorite color and playing with castle themed legos when I grew up, I went with Dark Angels instead though.
Scythes of the Emperor also kick ass. Not as easy as Templars though.

To give more constructive feedback than the base is shit, a wash would go a long way over the top of the grit, once the glue is dry. Breaking up static grass into more smaller clumps looks more realistic than one big mat. Dot glue, sprinkle grass, blow on it so it stands up. I assumed you were more at a beginner level so I hope this doesn't sound too condescending.

>>52329285
The best OSL is done without an airbrush but be aware it is extremely time consuming. You have to work out the light placement perfectly and then slowly glaze up the areas where the light hits, ensuring that it's as smooth as possible so as to create the effect. If done wrong it just looks awful, which is the reason most people use an airbrush for the main part and then glaze sparingly.
>>
>>52324342
>Also amazing how it looks so defined despite only using shades of white and teal.

>>52329323
Look up the From The Warp greenstuff cloak tutorial and adapt it to your needs.
>>
>>52329323
It's a pig iron mini, you could just buy it.

Seriously though, you probably should start with a vaguely rectangular flattened piece of GS and drape it onto the miniature, then use sculpting tools to add the folds. Something like a clayshaper should work well for that. If you don't have one of those use a sculpting tool with a round tip. If you don't have one of those you can use a needle pin.

You could also work in layers and add the folds with small sausages of GS that you then work into the surface below.

If you want to do free hanging cloths I'd recommend drilling a hole somewhere and add wire as amature, then add a thin rough layer of GS and let that dry. Once it has set you can sculpt over that.
>>
>>52329412
Fair enough. I suppose I'll watch some tutorials. Mostly flat vehicle surfaces, at least. Not too familiar with glazing either, almost entirely Duncan techniques so far. Got me from "Wot is highlight/wash" to "not actively blinding people from hideousness" levels, at least.

Hell, the guns are big enough I could probably mount a light in the barrel, but then I'd need to fuck about with wires.
