If you have parts of the model that don't match the colour of the rest of it, at all, consider priming it separately and attaching it later. Like for my Templar Brethren I prime everything but the shoulder pads black, but those I prime yellow to make my life easy because painting yellow over black is a fool's task.
>>
>>50784691

I use a spray. How should I go about priming by brush? I dont have to water it down? And can I just put a bunch on or put a couple.of thin layers?

Progress! Tomorrow I'll paint the highlights on the spear and spear arm and then probably matte down the black.

>>50784777
Well, spray prime the majority of the model if it's going to be black. But take, for example, the heads and shoulder pads that are going to be lighter colours and sit them on top of a straightened out paperclip with a little dab of super glue on the tip (easily broken later). I primed the attached pic with two thin coats, thinning the primer just like paint. Vallejo Surface Primer is already very thin, while Citadel Imperial Primer definitely needs to be thinned.

You don't need to justify it.
It's a common color for Space Marines, no reason CSM couldn't paint their armor the same way.
See Auric Patriarchs and Celestial Lions for example.

If you are asking for an in-universe reason, well that's half the fun of doing a DIY warband. Come up with whatever sounds cool to you.

In all seriousness that is what ended my brother's hobby aspirations.

He was gonna paint some biel tan eldar. Primer caked onto an entire squad of guardians.
Was the last time he ever tried painting something.
Years later during 4th he bought a shitton of Sisters. I think most of them are probably still in their packaging.

Are you trying to do a ghost paint scheme? If so it kinda works crawling along the ceiling is pretty spoopy too, but I think they'd look better if they didn't have the texture from drybrushing.
Washing in reverse order would give you a similar effect but a smoother finish I think.

Yeah ghost was what I was going for but when I tried a washing technique I got the monstrosity at the back.
>>
What paints did you use to get that effect? I wanna try spooky eldar now.
>>
>>50786123
Yeah.
There's lots of ways to wash something, these days with all the premade washes mixing your own is a bit of a lost art.
The GW washes are made to cover evenly and not collect in the nooks and crannies as much as an ink would.
So what you want to do is add something that breaks surface tension in your wash so you have something that is mostly transparent.

For example you start with a white and then use turqoise paint plus water until you can barely see the color and enough detergent to break surface tension (just a tiny bit). Then you paint that all over the mini and it should mostly stay white but give you defined lines in the recesses like a pinwash with oil paints.

You can still add shading by applying the wash more selectively around the mini then and slowly build up color where you want it.

Just an idea, as I said it works as it is and I immediately knew what you were going for even if the picture are upside down.

It's pretty embarrassing to say but I'm actually really struggling to paint these guardian heads I keep spilling paint on the inside and then fixing it I spill paint on the outside and doing the eyes and chin part, these push to fit guardians head is the most hardest part of a model I have painted, I almost feel like I need to make a cutout to protect the face area while painting
>>
>>50786275
If you are still struggling this much with your brush control try painting the eyes first, then the faceplate, and the the helmet around that.
GW guides usually tell you to do it the other way around which mean you can mess the stuff you painted before up. This way you can clean up after yourself in each stage and don't have to go back to the details again.

it varies ,but "inside out" is a common piece of advice given to new painters
>>
>>50786373
yet GW guides always have you do the details like lenses and eyes last.
Inside out is really the best way to paint no matter how experienced you are. Going back to clean up or being super careful takes time. Makes painting armies kind of pain.

>>
>>50786466
You could print it with a laser printer and transfer the toner via pic related.
Just got to rub the backside with acetone while pressing it on.
If you overdo it you'll have pieces of paper stuck in your paint because acetone obviously is a solvent.

If you got the rough outlines you can color the rest in with a brush.
Should be easy enough to do on a dread. Large flat surfaces.

>>50786529
looks like a detail. I could never get those to work personally though.
So I usually resort to the trick above or using a pencil and freehand painting.

That's a clever method I've never seen. But yeah personally I would attempt free hand, because it is fun. But you would need a good brush know how to control the width with all the loops and shit.

But I am a lazy painter anyway. I did this with shit brushes. OP wants something perfect he should stencil or do what your suggesting.

>That's a clever method I've never seen
Can't take credit for it though.
Picked it up a while ago looking at random military scale modelers blog's.
Pretty handy though.

I printed the old GW template for drop pods at 10% the size and transferred those onto plastic card to make tiny objective markers out of supply drops.
I stole the idea for the supply drops from the Space Marine game btw.

Is it me or do Dwarfs only really work in green or blue uniforms? Maybe reds. A lot of the model is basically decided for you, with the ruddy flesh, blond/brown/ginger large beard and plenty of leather straps.

I have a ragtag band of models from the puffy Renaissance-style Marauder lead miniatures to modern plastics, and I'm quite stuck for what will work across them all. Was thinking mostly royal blue with white.

I bought a used lot from some dude and soaked it in super clean for a few weeks. Most of the paint came off, but there were 4 colors on certain details that remained: flesh, red, black, and gray.

So I took some non-acetone nail polish remover to them. Nothing. Then I tried using a hobby file to scrape it off. It still won't come off.

What in the actual fuck did this guy put on these minis, this is impressive.

Just soaked this first batch overnight (maybe 12-13 hours) and for the most part they came clean. I had the same issue - red, black and a stubborn blue. Going to raid the wife and daughters' high acetone content nail polish remover and give that a whirl. If that doesn't do it, then I'll go buy a gallon of pure acetone.

Tbh, they just look like Chaos cultists with a bit different heads. You need to establish their AdMech/DarkMech belonging with the paint scheme.

I think they would look better/more AdMech with different weapons. Their assault rifles look to "common" if that makes sense.

>>
>>50792444
Yeah. These guys are essentially Admech conscripts, just whatever prisoners/misc civilians they grabbed, lobotomized and threw out to catch bullets for the robots.

I do agree with you, though. Next box I think I will give Skitarii guns and see how that looks, as well as maybe turn a couple Chaos stars into a tiny Admech symbol.

Going to be painted in Xana colours. These were equal parts an experiment on whether the conversion worked and a chance to test the paint scheme.

Moving forward on my army redo project

Love how the double headed axe turned out even though I'm usually horrible with this stuff, I think this guy will make a good commander
>>
>>50794823

That's a great pose. The head angle really makes it. However, I would recommend swapping out the shoulder and helmet, the reason being the shoulder is exclusively seen on active duty Champions, so seeing it on a Captain is strange (even ex-Champions like Sicarius don't use that pattern after retiring) and it's a type of shoulder that's iconic of Champions, meaning your guy will always look like a Champion and not any other type of unit.

That helmet used to be my favorite but I just feel like it's a bit too large and there are better looking ones nowadays, 10+ years later. Best Venerable Dreadnought head by far though.
>>
>>50794910
>shoulder is exclusively seen on active duty Champions

>the shoulder is exclusively seen on active duty Champions
it's just an up-armored pad, dude

space wolves don't give a fuck about uniforms
>>
>>50795039

It's a recommendation, and an extremely accurate and valid observation. If he doesn't like it, he can keep the pad and say his Captain isn't a bitch who needs someone to fight his own duels.

The FACT of the matter is that shoulder is a "Champion" type shoulder, and it's going to make people think of Company Champinos. Just like if you put a force hood and psychic staff on your Chaplain, he's going to look like a Librarian.

The frustrating part is that each time I want to try something new, it will take me a few weeks to do it. By the time that arrives I will have come up with something else that I don't have the models ready for.

Right now I want to field 80 Guardsmen and 7 Bullgryn with Yarrick. I have 23 models Guardsmen all painted and ready, and 4 Bullgryn built. Just so much left to do and it will take me almost a month to have it all ready.

White primer is a bitch to use. Came out way too thick, half the lenses have become a single bar visor and the bases are iffy... But it's primed.
>>
>>50796044
cant really tell from here, but the way it looks kinda shiny and is thinnest on edges makes me wonder if you used an enamel. If so, I'm terribly sorry!
>>
>>50796122
Nah, I used Rustoleum white primer. I use their black primer to good effect constantly, but this was my first time trying their white primer. I'm not a fan, but fortunately, I *only* bought it for these guys. Some of the thin-ness is from me trying to keep it from being TOO thick. Like the bases (which get glued/painted/etc over anyway).
>>
>>50796222
Never use pure white, use a grey or a bone-coloured primer. You'll have a much better time.

>>50796222

>>50796044

The trick is to find a good brand, and not try to get a solid white coat. Pic related is good enough for primer coverage, as long as you have enough specks throughout to give tooth and prevent chipping, it's fine. If you want a solid white coat, airbrushing is much easier to do this than a spraycan.

If you were using black, grey, or some other color it would be a different story. Aiming for a 100% solid coat with spraycan is very difficult because it sprays on much more thickly than an airbrush. If you compare them side by side you will see what I mean.

Any conversion ideas for AM conscripts for an Inquisition themed army? I want them to look like a zealous rabble mob
>>

let me get this straight
>AM
You mean Adeptus Mechanicus right? Or are you using Astra Militarum here? Just stick with IG it's less confusing.
Cause Admech sounds hightech.
>conscripts
conscripts sound disposable
>Inquisition themed army?
Inquisition implies elite units, so why conscripts?
>I want them to look like a zealous rabble mob
So this sounds like something else than all the others before. Cause they're neither hightech nor military or well trained I'd assume.

Could you elaborate on what kind of theme you are going for?
>>
>>50797063
Im basically trying to make some allies for an ecclesiarchy battle conclave. trying to make an general army in the theme of a crazed mob racing across the field screaming lol
>>
>>50797287
Okay then.
For regular civilian nutjobs I'd use the WHFB flaggelants with bare arms from a third party.
Victoria Miniatures and Madrobots sell those kind of arms. You could of course also kitbash them with Cadian and Catachan arms, but that means you'd have uniform parts or bodybuilder arms on your zealots.

If you are going for a more cult oriented flavor of zealot I'd say buy some Frostgrave cultists and put lasgun arms on those. Victoria has a bunch of different arms that could fit on those and even Northstar themselves sell sci-fi conversion packs for the miniatures.
If you are going for something like redemptionists the DG minis are definitely the way to go imo.

am I the only one who really misses the smell of the older GW paints. I just found a bunch from about 5 or more years ago, miraculously not dried out, still with that great smell

Also, just realized that if all of my paints are dried out than chances are my glue is as well. So a good place to get glue for resin models would be great.

Superglue may not dry out for a long time, but after like 2+ years the bond is shit regardless due to air slowly seeping in and ruining it. Superglue is far more perishable than people think, once you break the seal. So it was about time to get a new bottle anyway.

Actually it's just macragge blue. I prime in black.

errything's hand painted. Tanks took a couple coats before getting a solid colour, but otherwise pretty painless. Shading's nuln oil, highlighting's a mix of macragge blue and white.

If you can find a foundation colour to your liking, it saves you a lot of work on the basecoat. The blue takes three paints, by comparison the red and yellow both use five.

sup you fucken cunt! I'm more of a painter than a full blown hobbyist these days, but i go there from time to time.

I've had that issue with my spray before, but it's also come good. I think the reasons it fucked up were one of any
>not shaken enough
>didnt test spray enough
>did it during cloudy/rainy weather

I found as long as you keep the can continuously moving it doesn't fuck up. But for some reason towards the end of the can, mine started spraying really watery looking white as opposed to that chalky texture. So i'm fairly certain now it's just inconsistencies in the pigment/solvent/primer/whatever chemicals in the spray shit.

I mentioned this once in the Mt Gravatt GW to the store manager Tristan (i think his name is?) he pretty much just said "yeah it can fuck stuff up but shouldnt if you use it properly" or whatever (but it took him 10 mins to actually say that). When I walked out some guy followed me and was like
>hey bro that guy talks a lot of shit and straight up if you call GW and tell them their spray fucked your models and send it to them they'll sort it out they're pretty good, my mate did it after taking them here and they said it wasnt their problem. That guy inside is alright, but he talks a lot about stuff he doesn't really know about

i was just like, true... i came here for like 3 diff paints and end up getting a life story

Man, i can't tell if this is bait or not.

If not, there here are a few pointers:
Clean your moldlines. (marked in red)
Use washes, it's an easy way to bring out detail and makes them not look as bad as they do on your mini. (yellow for some places where a recess wash of nuln oil would work well)

And then for your next models, thin your paints a bit more. Seriously.

I was hoping a little more for color scheme, etc. feedback than "strip it even though the issue is the primer you can't strip without melting the model".

Thanks, though. It'd help people that haven't done those before.
>>
>>50804506
>"strip it even though the issue is the primer you can't strip without melting the model".
Use Dettol, if you're out of the UK it's pine based disinfectant. (Thick brown fluid)

I've used it to strip paint that break flurid wouldn't touch and the scouts that I bought off ebay with god knows what thick blue metallic primer (maybe enamel?!?) came out good as new.

I don't doubt your ability as a painter, but I think you and your wallet would really benefit from starting these guys again to rectify the clogginess from the primer and just doing a brushed on base coat for now.
>>
>>50804506
If it was GW White primer, you can strip the minis with 96+ proof isopropyl alcohol. Worked fine on one of my Dreads recently that got royally fucked by Corax White.

As for your colour scheme - well it's red and (off) white. As an Austrian, I approve.

I prime black then do a thin coat of Ceramite White by hand on all my areas that will become Reds and Creams. I feel they come out okay.

I have a plan to kitbash some AoS minotaurs as 'abhuman auxiliaries' Bullgryns. I like the model and I want to try sculpting clothes with green stuff (dear God Emperor put some pants on you giant cow-things).

But I noticed this picture which demonstrates that a Minotaur is almost 25% bigger than the Ogryn/Bullgryn model.

I'm worried because a big part of the Bullgryn's job is to obscure vehicles and give them cover saves. If I use such a big, chunky model my opponent might accuse me of modeling for advantage, since bigger model = more cover.

First time I'm posting on /wip/.

Awesome, thanks

Just slather it on wet and smooth.

Just prime with grey. Has the benefits of both white and black primer.

But then you can't play in official games

This, they once broke apart my models to test if mine was Games Workshop Greenstuff (tm).
>>
>>50808524
And if it was greenstuff, do i get to break a piece off of the ass that broke it?

I'm looking to recast a few old IG Stormtroopers. They're metal. But I don't want to go through the whole process of building a sculpt and mould etc. Does anyone know what it would be like if I made an outline in DAS and filled it with Resin?
>>
im making some world eater terminators and need bare arms for them, ive been looking at bullgryns arms but im worried they are to big for a terminator, do any of you guys know? should i go for them or do you know better arms to use?
>>
>>50808880
What aboot Catachan arms?
>>
>>50808832
Sounds like something that wouldn't work. You'll either end up with a really distorted casting or a mess of wasted resin.

Thought by most novitiates to be merely a ghost story told amongst rookies, the tale of Sergeant Malachai and his scouts is more than a myth. Fireteam Malachai, Dark Angels 10th Company, 7th Squad, was sent on a data retrieval mission to a deathworld near the Eye of Terror. Some say the jungles on the planet were alive, and swallowed the squad whole. Others say they were devoured by ferocious beasts prowling in the shadows. Others still say the scouts were simply assimilated into the ranks of the chapter after a successful mission. While their true fate is unknown, in the whispers of recruits live legends - of "The Lost Patrol".

Paintjob looks fine, but those faint, parallel lines on the model are triggering me.
>>
>>50808898
im afraid they might look to small on the terminators and they will end looking like t-rex arms
>>
>>50808788
No but they'll offer to let you borrow their Citadel Glue (tm) for 2.99
>>
>>50808928
I was thinking of imprinting the front, then the back on two seperate slabs to make one mass cavity. Oiling the inside lightly to reduce sticking and then filling the cavity with slightly thinner than usual resin. I would leave it to set for a bit and then remove the cast and heat dry it.
I REALLY couldn't be bothered doing it the right way because it's so time consuming. Do you know anyone that has attempted something similar?
>>

Man, I miss Sergeant Naaman. Nice job on the scouts though!
>>
>>50808955
I didn't mean to post the 6mb pic, though...

Yes, it is time-consuming, somewhat expensive, and can be *really* frustrating. If it works out, though, it can be quite rewarding!

>Do you know anyone that has attempted something similar?

Actually, yes, but not with something as detailed as an infantry model. There was some lad around here who cast part of a Leman Russ tank using greenstuff and Oyumaru to make tank wreckage for some terrain. It looked pretty cool... I'll have to see if I have it in my /WIP/ images bucket.

Generally, I enjoy the process of painting units up and having them look uniform. So it wouldn't need to be insanely detailed to satisfy me. I would rather have an army of guys like this, than an army of individually posed snowflakes. I like uniformity.

>>50809315
That's actually pretty clever. Saving for later.
