Nuln Oil, one of Agrax Earthshade or Seraphim Sepia, and Reikland Fleshshade if you'll be doing skin. It's been said before, but you're also setting yourself up for problems by painting yellow over black.
>>
>>50742150
I have a black primer which I basecoat over with white, then do a layer of yellow. Should get some white primer though tbqh. Having only black ink to hand doesn't help either.

Anyone have custom Archons they can post? I know that one anon that made his own post pretty often, with the smooth helmet and the skin cloak.

Imgur album for size and shit. Don't have access to photo editing shit.

The cloak on the girl has been shaded, the Tech Priest is just pre shade on the cloak, waiting for paint to dry. I really wish i had a bigger place to hobby, and more paints.
>>
>>50742282
Ushabti is a shit paint to work with. you have to do 2 thin coats, however it looks a lot nicer imho.

Rakarth you can paint straight from pot, never too thin or thick, but it's a dull colour.
>>
>>50742235
The white splotchiness you've smacked on is more apparent on the right, making the ones on the left look much better. Rakarth co-operates a bit better with the green though.

And tone down the eye glow a good bit, it's overpowering the definition of the parts there. A much more gradual blend between lit up area and the armour below would also be a good idea, it stops very suddenly here. OSL, NMM and so on can look good if done right, but if you're not quite there they tend to crash and burn quite badly, and you're not quite there yet I'm afriad.

what

gw rattlecans aren't even real primer anyway. That stuff comes off super easy with the right chemicals
>>
>>50743446
I had a can of rustoleum. I told him it was actual primer and he must have treated it like it was GW because it was literally caked on. I did all I could without stripping but it's just a practice model

"Vallejo Surface Primer" in either gray or black. It comes in a really big 60ml dropper bottle for about 5-10 bucks on amazon, but I think you can also get it in the 25ml droppers if you prefer.

You apply it like any other paint really.

Put some in the airbrush with a teeny bit of flow improver. Make sure you don't have the PSI too high. Use mostly air until you are comfortable.

Doing this you can get complete coverage while still having control, but it will take more time and passes than if you were to pull the trigger all the way back and crank up the PSI.

my personal favourite is 'nids painted to look like fresh flesh - that pinky colour that you see under a wound, that's how I want to paint a 'nid army when I inevitably hate myself enough to start buying WH40k. Pair it with a decent green or blue for the eyes/veins and all that and a good purple or something for the bone plates and you've got some good looking nids.

You need to thin that yellow a lot more. It looks really cloggy.
>>
>>50740970
As another Anon said, i started by following Duncan's tutorial but abandoned it halfway through.

The red -> purple -> blue was mostly done via layering and glazing and I'm currently using very diluted glazes to even out the rough patches left by the drybrushing.

In hindsight, I should have just done it the regular way.

Hey, I have a Ta'unar with the basically five multi-meltas strapped together arms, and figured that therefore partially melting a small tank or walker to put on the base (thinking maybe a Killa kan or deff dread?) to have something a bit more exciting than plain gravel.

So, two questions: Does Citadel plastic melt? I know different plastics react differently to heat.

And secondly, how do I go about it if it's possible? My mother has a hot air gun thing for her crafts work, would borrowing that do it?

>>
>>50745326
I actually really like that about Tau models. Conversions are easy as shit that way, and it makes for some good interchanges between units (Pathfinders dont wear shoulderpads, so if you put extra carbine arms from Fire Warriors, you wont have a huge, locking in place bump to smooth over.)

But you said you arent using them, and i agree, one of the most annoying things was learning to glue those damn arms on. And with the old FW model
>>
>>50745503
Im not sure, but youd probably have to decide if you want a melted enemy, or just a hole seared through. Because you may be able to use an acid for the second one.
>>

>>insanely stupidly placed little supports everywhere in hard-to-reach areas like between the hand, the gun and the chest all over

though, unless the sculpt was originally mastered in resin/finecast. The metal to finecast kits all have these dumb vent spots.
>>
>>50745503
>So, two questions: Does Citadel plastic melt?

Yes. Power dremels with any sort of non-retardedly slow RPM will melt Citadel plastic. It's why you can't drill barrels except with extremely slow power drills.

>My mother has a hot air gun thing for her crafts work, would borrowing that do it?

Lol.
>>
>>50743586

The bullet trajectories actually converge them pass each other and bloom outwards so the gun shoots like an extremely low pressure garden hose. Also the bullets sometimes ricochet off each other to increase the chances of getting lucky extreme angle shots. Learn to gun, gue'la.

That foam is going to need some treatment to disguise the texture of the cells- either a texture paint or building up some pigments on there.

Paintjob and base are otherwise cool, but watch those layers on the beige, take it slow on the shoulderpads to avoid texture like on that right greave.

I asked you guys for advice on whether or not to go for these cheap shields for my Space Marines, and I went ahead and got these. I just wanted to let you guys know how these are, since they were about 20 shields for $3. Pics in a sec.
>>
>>50748640
I remember. You were worried the detail wouldnt be nice, or they'd be too small. Im curious to see some.
>>
>>50748637
Base coated in Vallejo Game Color Earth, then layered Desert Yellow. After that I washed with Seraphim Sepia, and re applied the Desert yellow outside of the recesses. From there I kinda followed where the shine would be with mixes of Desert Yellow and Bonewhite. Finally I edge highlighted with Bonewhite. It looks alright but could definitely be done better

They could just about work as combat shields, almost like duelling bucklers. Otherwise...they could make for some nice ornamentation on terrain? Like shields hung on walls.

This shield would be a funny buckler on a space marine, at best. That ends my short review of this Kickstarter funded soldier shield.

I plan on using these as little details to spruce up models like terminator shinguards and shoulders, or to add to vehicles. I'm sure it'll look nice as vehicle bits. It was a nice gamble, anyway.

Thanks for your advice earlier, fat guys. Heres to hoping some people are educated on this product now.

And in case anyone was interested in acquiring these, the home website for the wargame has a stupid high shipping rate for what it produces so I recommend finding it on ebay instead under a search for Legian Infantry Shields.
>>

Am i the only one who thinks a few of these with tassles, purity seals, etc all clustered would make for a great Decorated Captain's shield, or like anon said, terrain.
A big monument/statue with a bunch of these worn shields, flowers, guns, books and candles around it.
>>
>>50749091
I like the way you took my idea! My original thought was like what you see on castle walls or something, but I like the idea of a monument of shields and arms, maybe left to slowly degrade on the site of an old battlefield.

The old GW shields should be about as large as a combat shield.
If you want something bigger with an aquila on it you could try using Urban Mammoth's Junker riot shields or ebay some custodes bits.

Reaper also has a set of heraldic knights, who have sculpted detail on their shields I don't know if that is a separate piece though.
>>
>>50749091

More details like purity seals would make these look feasible, actually. That might actually be a great idea for my little project to make budgeted Templar Brethren. I'm also tempted to make a huge base with swords and shields on the ground for a special character.

Hey! So, I ran a dubs contest a couple months ago and, while it didn't actually win, some people wanted me to paint up a tyranid as in Ultramarine colors. So, after getting settled into my new job, I finally finished Ultra-Nid.

So, I finally got him done! Sorry if the picture is a bit oddly lit, I'm working on a new lighting set-up.

Otherwise, it was a pretty good exercise. Made me realize how out of practice I am when it comes to metals, though I think those came out alright too.

One of the Mantic Crazy boxes are a VERY good deal. I'd recommend the Sci-Fi box. Better looking minis.
>>
>>50749738

Just search ebay. Usually minis from starter sets are super cheap, also some people sell some really common plastic minis for cheap as well. Same with metal minis, also with metal minis it is even easier to strip them than plastic minis, so if you can you can practice on one model for like 50 times if you feel like it.

If you want to buy from GW, buy like a cheap toy box (those are like 10 pounds/euros/dollars) or maybe one of those get started with painting sets.

Really like the color scheme but the paint is awfully chunky looking on the flat surfaces, and the line of wash down the middle of the crotch guard doesn't look good, should have just dabbed each stud individually like you did on the edges.

You've also got some touch ups to do but that's why we call it a WIP.
Sand the paint down a bit on those flat surfaces and go back in between the studs on the crotch guard with your base color and it'll be looking nice.

They honestly werent too bad. Saved me a lot of money, making 20 guys from a 10 man firewarrior box.

It took me more than an hour to get 4 pins into the hip/waist of my warhound. Its an absolute cunt if you want it at an angle and dont have any clamps, even elastic bands didnt help. I did discover a new technique on the last pin though, its called "being so angry you drill too hard and fast and get stuck and then after 5 minute of furious jiggling and swearing you accidentaly snap the bit while trying to get it out, leaving it wedged into the hole" - obviously this technique is for the advanced craftsman onlY

don't bother painting eyes, really. Unless you have a brush small enough to do actual small dots for the iris, don't bother.

Looks okay, could use some Reikland Fleshshade painted into the recesses again to further establish the line work and edges of the model.

Gold could use a few highlights as well, and the bolter spear needs to be a different color, there's WAY too much gold on that mini.

Try a pet store first, they sell the raw cork bark which has lots of cool natural texture on it. You see a lot of corkboard bases, but they tend to give the 'everyone surfing on equal height boulders' look.

There could be more contrast in the mask- if I squint at it it just looks like a dark blob in the hood.

If you were doing it again, priming white and painting your dark parts black separately would be a no brainer.

Hey, I recently bought this can of primer, my first can, and after 4 hours of letting it dry the models feel sticky. Is that normal? I sort of remember models primed with GW stuff being dry. The models with my primer feel much more dry after a day but I thought it should only take a few hours to fell that way.

Get braver with your highlights, go all the way to silver on the gold.

I can't quite tell what's up with the highlights on his pteruges, but they're a bit splotchy, particularly on the right.

The hammer isn't very interesting, and the highlights are a little splotchy again.

I also disagree with the gold base rim, he would have been better served by a black rim and a base that contrasts better with the gold.
>>
>>50758414
I haven't used the valspar primers, but I used a can of their gold on some minis and it also took longer than GW stuff to dry and the finish was meh. I'm going with GW sprays if I don't have an airbrush by next time.

You have some learning to do with respect to highlighting cloth- your lightest colours on the back of that tabard are

-in recesses
-in the most shadowed part (the light manages to get in up near his crotch, but not near the floor?)

Similarly your highlighting of the folds of his trousers isn't great.

I don't know why you've made that part near his belt blue.

I don't know that brand, but they can be sticky from humidity or spending to long in the sun and not drying fully. I suggest just waiting longer and placing them in a cool shaded area for a few hours. If that doesn't do it, you may have to do another coat with a different brand.

So I'm getting into War Gaming and by extension painting. I've got some models coming in this week so I was wondering what should I get in terms of brushes and tools. I'm going to painting some cyngar and cyrx models with my gf.
>>
>>50761589
A lot of different manufacturers make decent stuff. Very nice brushes will cost you.

Most GW stuff is solid, but you pay a slight premium for it. In particular, the GW base brushes and drybrushing brushes are very good, as is their "Artificer" brushes which use the real sable hairs. The Artificer brushes are comparable in both price and performance to high end windsor newton brushes.

I think army painter and others make some decent synthetic brushes, but i haven't used them personally.

Whichever you choose, do youself a huge favor and get a jar of "The master's brush cleaner / preserver." It cleans your brushes very well, extends their lifespan, and a single 5 USD jar of it will last you many years of miniature painting.
>>
>>50760642
What were you going for? Because that looks kinda weird.
>>
>>50761589
Get a bottle or spraycan with primer. Dark grey or black are the most beginner friendly.
There are paint sets for the Warmachine factions, like this:
http://privateerpress.com/content/cygnar-colors

I guess two of these (one for each faction you want to play) are a good start.
You could buy different paints but since you want to paint Warmachine and P3 is not bad.. i guess these are as good as any.

On top of that get a bottle of brown and a bottle of black wash. For example "Agrax Earthshade" and "Nuln Oil" by Games Workshop or "Dark Tone" "Strong Tone" by Army Painter.

Brushes: A size 2 or 3 for painting the base colors on bigger surfaces. A 1 for smaller parts of the miniature and a 0 for detail work.

A set like this will be good enough for starting out and if you take care they will last for a while:
https://www.amazon.com/MEEDEN-Professional-Sable-Detail-Paint/dp/B01JYVI9RQ/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1482102749&sr=8-9&keywords=sable+hair+brush+size+1

The benefit of them is that if you damage them by your lack of knowledge it won't hurt your wallet so much.

Tools:
A Hobby knife and a side cutter is all you need.
For example (you can buy them wherever you want or wherever you can get them cheaper ofc)

https://www.amazon.com/Hakko-CHP-170-Stand-off-Construction-21-Degree/dp/B00FZPDG1K/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1482102514&sr=8-3&keywords=side%2Bcutter&th=1

Last but not least you need plastic glue.

other tools vary depending on your models. You don't necessarily need every tool, but there is a certain amount of "making do" if you lack the correct tool.

>Plastic Glue (Butanone glue)
Ideal for plastic models. Doesn't work for resin or metal. Causes nerve damage if inhaled.

>Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate Glue)
Good for gluing your fingers together... and everything else. On plastic models, Butanone glue is better, but super works for everything.

>Hobby knife
Good for trimming and cleaning. You can get a pack of 100 knife blades for 5-10 bucks online.

>Files
Good for cleaning mold lines on all kinds of models. A set of hobby files shouldn't cost more than 15 bucks.

>Model clippers
NOT wire cutters. Necessary for plastic models, not needed for most else. For clipping models off the sprue.

>Mold line removal tool
Not a necessary tool, but if you are assembling LOTS of plastic models these things are really so much better than the traditional method of using the back of a knife

>The master's brush cleaner / preserver

I can't find this for a good price in europe and wanted to try some brush soap for quite some time now.

>>
>>50761773
>NOT wire cutters.

>>50761221
I genuinely envy you, anon. I used to live in British Columbia and a few years ago moved to Ontario, I missed not having to deal with it being so cold I can't feel my fingers in my home.

I even miss the humidity that made my hair frizz more than my friend Deandre's
>>
>>50761773
Thanks senpai!
>>
>>50761803
unsure, but try looking in art supply shops. The brush cleaner usually recommended here in the US is actually more intended for traditional painting acrylics on much larger brushes, but works great and lasts a long time on miniature brushes and acrylics.

>>50761817
wire cutters are usually thick and not flat on the bottom. They are designed for cutting steel wire in roughly the right spot, not precision cutting soft plastic against a flat surface.

You might find some flat cutters with narrow heads, but you'll end up paying the same as if you bought hobby clippers. Might as well just buy the right tool for the job.

All right, I got a question. How much ventilation do I need for using plastic glue safely? Should I just set up a fan and have it so it blows fumes away from me?

>>50761101
I used Krylon when I was younger and they did great. I can't find them anymore at Home Depot so now i use Rustoleum's "Painter's Touch" series. Also good shit.

I have a couple cans of the coloured Army Painter primer too. Expensive but priming yellow saves a lot of hassle compared to having to paint yellow over white (or, Emperor forbid, black).

>>50761817
I used to use a pair of nippers that weren't flush and they can distress the plastic when making cuts on finer models. I found them just fine for marines, but for the Sisters of Silence (for example) I switched to some flush nippers and they're great.
>>
>>50762326
>How much ventilation do I need for using plastic glue safely?

Depends on how long you plan to use it per season. If you glue some minis together for like 30 minutes, you don't need ventilation at all as long as you open your window for 5-10 minutes afterwards. (or if temperature allows it, just have it open while you work).

If you glue for longer periods of time i don't think a fan would help much. You just spread the smell around in your room. Open your window every 30 minutes for a short time so fresh air can circulate and its fine.

Personally i let my freshly glued minis sit on the balcony for one night after i glued them together, so they can spread their smell outside instead of in the apartment. If you don't have a balcony, at least make sure they are not in the same room as your bed.
