Hey! So, months ago, I had a dubs contest to see what I would paint a tyranid guy I have lying around. Blazing oragane and sky blue won, and after moving to a new city and starting a new career at the last second, I have sky-guy done.

It has been a WHILE since I've done anything with orange, so this was a good exercise for me. Also haven't done claws in a while, but I enjoyed doing this anyway.

Next up, Ultra-nid.

Reposting this for the anon asking about alternative models for feral/feudal guardsmen.

These are Men-At-Arms bodies with Cadian bits and some other stuff which I don't know the origin of.
>>
anyone paint wizards know how i can achieve this color scheme, mainly the armor chestplate and the dirty tan clothing?
>>
>>50627744
Dirty tan is a khaki/cream (or perhaps even a pale green) washed with brown, while you could achieve the breastplate with something equivalent to Leadbelcher with brown ink.
>>
In response to Britishanon sending to my depressing self in NC:

Mine is also crossing the ocean, so it might be each other. Who knows, would be neat.
>>
>>50627744
Armor is easily achievable by painting it steel and adding some matt black wash all over. Uniform is olive+yellow in different proportions for each layer I believe, from almost dark olive to almost yellow.
>>
>>50627742
Those other bits are from the Skitarii Ranger/Vanguard kit.
>>
>>50627742
These look neat, but good luck with finding bretonian men at arms for a reasonable price these days. People on ebay are at super-jew-mode when it comes to unbuilt bretonia stuff.

And heres another look at the shields. On one hand I found them for cheap; but on the other hand, they kind of look cheap.
>>
>>50627744
There is a color by vallejo model color called "english uniform". This is a very darkish khaki which should be close to that pics fatigues.

Not sure about the breastplate, maybe a dark gun metal with brown wash on top of it?
>>
>>50627977
Keep in mind they will look alot smaller on a Space Marine than on these minis.
But with paint and highlights and a wash they will look way better than on your pic.

If they are cheap.. go for it i guess. It never hurts to try something.
>>
>>50627977
They could work for Combat shields, you might be pushing it for storm shields. they might need some cleaning up before you paint them, but a good paintjob can overcome a mediocre part, I say.
>>
>>50628004

Yeah, I was thinking they're too small to be breacher shields but they'll make decent combat shields. I'll think about it some more I guess, thanks.

>How do you find the mouldline remover?

Citadel's mould line remover is top notch, but expensive. You can buy one at GW or a Chapter-Approved retailer for $17. Every once in a while Micro Mark will put their competing product, the Seam Scraper, on sale for $10, but shipping will usually kill the deal... so make it worth it by buying yourself some casting supplies from them while you're at it!

>I just use a hobby knife to scrap my mouldlines and I'm wondering if I should upgrade to the Citadel one or some other brand's version.

The back of a hobby knife works almost as well as Citadel's remover. There are no sharp parts on the mold line remover, though, so if you slip or drop it, you run no risk of damaging your model or impaling yourself. Additionally, its "blade" actually runs the entire length of the tool (the wooden sides are merely attached to it), so it won't bend, warp, or snap off.

It was pricey, but I'm glad I bought it. Damn thing even works on my old metal miniatures!

>>
>>50628102
>Wouldn't a proper surgical knife handle like pic related work the same way without a blade?

It very well might. I've never held a surgical knife like that in my hand before.

It's the square edge on the Citadel mold line remover (and also the back edge of your hobby knife, if you're using it as such) that do the work. The Ciatdel tool is going to be thicker and sturdier than a disposable X-acto blade, and those surgical knives *look* comparable to me. Is the part where the blade goes rounded, or does it have an edge with an angle you can drag along to get rid of the mold lines?
>>
>>50628153
It has an edge where the x-acto blade can slot into.
>>
>>50628102
My scalpel handles have chamfered or rounded edges (so they feel better in the hand and so the blade is the only sharp edge), so they won't be very good scrapers.

I have both, a number 3 made by Feather like on that pic and a cheap knockoff #3. The Feather one is like you said: Well made and round/soft edges so it lies good in the hand.
The cheaper one has very hard edges all around the handle though.
>>
>>50628194
What models are those? They look dope!
>>
>>50628102

The backside of any hobby knife works just as well as the moldline remover in my experience. Its all just a matter of finding the right size to fit the model.
So do your self a favor, and save some money in the process, just stick with your knife.

Does John Blanche paint minis? I've never seen any.
His artwork is very hit or miss for me. Some of it's amazing looking, other times it's just fucking stupid looking.

Pic related is the latter.
>>
>>50631033
>how do you paint with the same style of john blanche?
be John Blanche.
Seriously though he paints minis like he paints on canvas.
Strong black and white contrasts and ink washes.
Not the premixed GW stuff either, actual artists inks, as were commonly used back in the 80/90s for miniature painting.
He also uses the modern GW washes though.

And loads of tiny freehand with checker patterns and lettering.

The best way to copy a style is to use a specific reference and learn that way.
If you are not sure how to approach something, post an image of a miniature that you want to replicate the look of.

So I've been looking at a few things and I've kinda wondering, is a set order to follow in bases, washing and layers? I tried highlighting after washing as the video guide I was following said and it to me gave a really noticeable difference when I'd prefer a more subtle change.

Is there a set order? Does it depend on personal preference?

Sorry for being stupid but I don't really know anyone to ask.
>>
>>50632275

Washes are great as a painting short cut most of the time or for specific effects. If you're looking for really smooth transitions, the only real way to do it without an airbrush is the magic of lots and lots of really thin layers.
>>
>>50632351
I see. My issue with my experience so far was that you'd wash... and then the highlighted areas are unwashed and are even a shade lighter than the bit you just washed so you end up with a hyper jarring pop when in my mind surely you'd do those things first, the wash then tidy that with the same colour but unwashed. Then again I also have a deep fondness for darker colours and the smoother look so perhaps it's my personal taste being trash.

any tips for converting death guard marines?
>>
>>50632275
>>50632448
There is no set order and no rules.
Paint how you think it looks best.

Learn from the paint guides and take the information into account, but don't fall into the mindset of that being the right or the only way to do something.

If you want a softer transition do the base, the layer and then wash. The wash is gonna blend the colors together.
Or just highlight with the base after the wash again and forget about the layer.
Whatever looks best.

>>

>should I add plaguebearer bits?
Sounds like a good idea. Plague knifes and mutated flesh are good. Horns in similar patterns to the plague bearers on the helmets of your marines would also look good I think.
>should I go full greenstuff? should I try to make each marine different?
If you want to, sure. I mean the baseline should be they have to be armed like they should and that's it from a the minimum required perspective. Everything else is up to you. With the mk3 plastic kits now you could even try to convert models in a similar vein to the old 2nd edition models with the prussian pickelhaube design, if you know what I mean.
>>
>>50632739
It's more art than science. Plaguebearer bits could work. Other bits could work. Greenstuff can work.

But do try to make them all unique. Chaos and all that.

I think they'd benefit from actual ogryns heads. Remember that ogryns are claustrophobic, a full helmet could be weird, even though they have stuff kinda like that in 30k.

Right now, it just looks like an Anvil minI with a big shield.

Speaking of Anvil stuff, was looking into getting some of their shield arms because FW sure as shit is dragging their feet with making an upgrade kit for plastic MkIIIs. Since I'm not a fan of the Medieval arms, my only other options are the Vanguard arms. I suppose I could handwave the arm being different in that it's housing power cabling and reinforced servos for carrying and powering the shield itself.

But what are these circled things suppose to be? Is that like cloth or what? How well will a shoulder pad cover all that?
>>
>>50633276
Yeah, that's what I'm going for, just normal guardsmen in bulky exo-suits. I was looking for a technological solution to filthy abhumans.
>>
>>50633342
I think those might just be inner power-cables, the ones that power the actual suit?
>>
>>50633386
I thought so too, but the one on the far right looks more like wrinkled cloth than a series of cables.
>>
>>50633505
Yeah I was looking at that too, I still think power-cables, but maybe just a faulty mold on the far right one?

Slightly off topic, but can any UK anons material for making scenery with, in particular hills/rocks? There are a few youtube channels who recommend insulation foam, but having visited B&Q, the stuff they sell there is really fibrous and doesn't look like the same stuff from the vids...

You mean like the sheets of Celotex? I wouldn't use that stuff, not least because its really flakey and not good to inhale...I guess for rocks you could also try expanding foam. A small dollop of it, let it expand then carve it. That comes out reasonably fine.
>>
Too the Rochester anon, your secret santa is sent! Idk how long it'll take to get to you though, hopefully before christmas.

in other news, this is the first model i've converted and painted since i had an operation on my right arm, hands are a bit shaky but idk where to go from here with it. Suggestions?

Cheers, kind of what I was looking for but I need a larger scale. Think I have found what I'm looking for, the stuff is just called rigid insulation foam.

Its what my dad works with as part of his trade. Its not as bad as fibreglass or god forbid asbestos, but it'll still do you no good if you inhale it.

A cursory look online found a shop that sells made to measure blocks of modelling foam.

https://www.efoam.co.uk/foam-rectangle.php?gclid=Cj0KEQiA7K7CBRCrwt26v5uHs98BEiQA0JzsZx9XTO9twPMBjcxNGWo9rERYq8EbygAeHx8TwKOGGBEaAgxt8P8HAQ

Looks like it could be a good alternative to insulation foam, as its designed for what we want.

Some chipping always looks good on orks with painted armour, and acts similar to an edge highlight for emphasizing contrast on the edge of plates.

If he's a big-effort mini then I'd add a little more yellow to your skintone for another highlight on the knuckles, and do a small white highlight on the tip of the horns.

Conversion-wise, I feel like his torso is slightly too long, but otherwise it's really nice.

Thank you so much based Turkanon. This gift really means a lot to me, as orks were what initially brought me into the hobby, around 15 years ago. Although I took a break and just recently returned to playing and painting, orks will ever be something special to me. Unfortunately I've sold my old orks (4k points 40k and 3k wfb), but this might be the start of a small ork army for me! Really love the kromlech models.

So I finished my second session of experimenting with the art of scrubbing models covered by shit. The good news is Simple Green and hot water does indeed fuck up the green stuff, so I was able to completely salvage an awesome storm shield and a librarian's hand intact (although if that bitch was finecast resin it would have probably been destroyed by my hard labor).

The bad news is the other model I scrubbed is still not completely washed away. I was able to rip away the metal parts intact and those were scrubbed 99%, but the plastic marine itself is pretty stubborn. Hopefully a third session will do it.

I know theres stronger stuff out there, but I don't live by myself and I don't want to use anything stronger than Simple Green in the house.

Do you guys have any recommended varnishes?

Preferably a spray.

Also, is does mat varnishes fuck up metal colors?
Satin varnishes sounds like the more reasonable choice, right?
>>
>>50636739
>Also, is does mat varnishes fuck up metal colors?

Yes it does. Testor's Dullcote is the best matte varnish but it's expensive and it basically turns metallics into non-metallics. Army Painter is the one I recommend as it's acrylic, cheaper since it comes in a larger can, and is about 99% as good in terms of matte finish, and has a high resistance to misting due to humidity because it's Army Painter.

For spray matte, I don't have any good recommendations but I bought a can of Krylon acrylic matte. Dunno if it's any good. I know Pledge Future floor polish is the best acrylic gloss but it's a liquid, not a spray.
>>
>>50636619
Conversion based on the CSM kit's heavy bolters. Metal tubes for the autocannon barrels and ammo drums.

>>50636647
Good news: Those aren't capacitors. Just larger aluminum tubes with plastic (from a cheapo 'for sale' sign) to cap the ends.
>>
>>50636759

Any idea if Purity Seal is any good?
I'd like to preserve some shininess from metals and such if possible.
>>
>>50636808

Purity seal is a satin, and satins don't kill metallic shines as much. Purity seal's problem is that it's expensive, and it mists a lot. If you want to risk the misting, go for it, but I'd recommend a different satin spray. If you live in a warm, dry area then you won't have to worry about misting.

Army Painter is pretty good at preserving shine for a matte, but it's still going to kill a lot of it. I've heard people using the new gloss washes say that helps preserve shine after spraying varnish.

Thin your paints
>>
>>50636808

Depends on where you are. If you live in like Arizona for example it'll work fine. But it turns into cum spray when things get really cold and/or wet

But I guess a more general question for folks here, what do you use to preserve your models? I'm in so cal so purity seal works fine for me, but I'm wondering if there's another sealant I can find that would be better.
>>
>>50636875

I'm NorCal and I use AP anti-shine. Humidity is generally 55-90 so I have to wait till days that are 45-50 to be super safe.

>>50636424
The progress is definitely there! I'd say you need to neaten up the wash on the pauldron by either improving your brush control to get the wash just into the recesses or use your base colour to make it less wide. The highlighitng on the pauldron is also very messy (in contrast to the neat highlighting on the arm).

The other pauldron is definitely too far offset, it should be tighter to the torso of the marine. Personally I like painting my pauldrons separately and then attaching them to the rest of the marine after they're all finished.

The highlighting on the arm is nice, but I honestly can't tell if the botler has any highlights at all.

Thanks. It's a really basic process.

1. Prime with an airbrush (flat white)
2. Lightly shade with a very light grey
3. Take a pot of brown ink and shake the fuck out of it. Make sure it's good and frothy.
4. Brush over the armour panels, letting it settle evenly
5. Let it dry for many, many hours.

Years and years ago, I painted eight BFG cruiser models. I was never satisfied with their appearance though, because it was really difficult to get sharp detail on them, like on their antennas or command decks.

Is there a way to get good, sharp detail on miniatures, and not a bunch of blobby lines?
>>
>>50639616

If you're a novice painter, ink washes are your friend. Other than that, A good fine brush and painting with the side of your brush can work well.
>>
>>50639658
What's an ink wash?
>>
>>50639380
But anon, I AM using color theory as an argument. Scheme looks good because complementary colors armonize well, plus, base blue was pretty solid and bright itself. Pastel blue was used to highlight and texture the armor plates.
>>
>>50639693

Ink washses are basically really thinned down paints. Instead of sticking to a surface normally, they seep into the cracks, providing a lot of definition for little work. While not the prettiest miniatures, you can see an example of the results on this coat: http://displacedminiatures.com/images/2.img.1331674871DeathDealers3.jpg

a lot of definition, little work.
>>
>>50639693
Very liquid, runny paint (aka ink) is liberally brushed over large surfaces so it runs into the recesses of the miniature, thus creating easy shading. Gives nice depth to a miniature.
>>
>>50639760
>>50639745
The issue I was having with the BFG models was that I wanted to highlight the guns and make some sharp, easily-seen windows and armor-plate.

What do you use for drilling / pinning your models? I mean metal models. I have an electric drill (20000 rpm) with 1/8" standart chuck but I can't find small (0,5mm-1mm) drill bits for metal (only for PCB/plastic)
What does WIP use that is not an uberexpensive professional dremel?

>I have an electric drill (20000 rpm)
in my experience drilling slower works better. Otherwise you're just heating up your mini and breaking your drillbits off.
I had a set of drillbits that fine that came with my rotary tool. And I think you should be able to get stuff like that in any decent hardware store.
But army painter sells drill bits too.

Smaller than 1mm is a size I've rarely used, even for pinning. Using paperclips for pinning work quite well. They're stronger than garden wire and still small enough you don't have to drill big. And they're easy to come by.
>>
>>50641568

That RPM is going to melt your models. Even 5000 RPM melts plasic. You need a variable speed drill that starts at 0 RPM or has a setting with very very low RPM.
>>
>>50641568
>>50641606

>Electric drills

What the hell
>>
>>50641658
I said rotary tool.
You can use that to cut or grind. Pretty useful for converting metal and plastic alike.
If you need one obviously depends on how involved your conversions get though.

or as an alternative you could try those gloss washes by GW or the Army painter quick shade stuff (the one in the big jar, not the small dropper bottles). That stuff flows straight to the recesses without altering/darkening the paint itself.
It makes the mini glossy though, so you need matte varnish afterwards.
>>
>>50642113
>That stuff flows straight to the recesses without altering/darkening the paint itself.

This is a lie, but the effect is a lot less noticeable than with matte washes.
>>
>>50642136
I watched a review on that army painter dip a while ago and the guy who did it pointed that out especially. I didn't use it myself (nor the gloss gw stuff) but i heard the gw gloss washes behave the same way.

>>
>>50637849
They are both originally hive tyrants.
The guns are both mixes of bits from taurox guns and the arms carrying them are both biomorph gun arms with the gun hacked off. The left arm resting on top of the gun on the left tyrant is the "tube arm" for the venomcannon with the tube removed and the fingers made from the spikes which usually go on the tyrants chest. Each one then has a scything talon arm, and the one on the right has a lash whip for his free arm since he's holding the gun one handed.
The legs I just took a hobby saw and made the angle a bit more straight to give them a taller profile, also mixed 1 flying leg and one walking leg with each to give a more dynamic pose. the toes are just green stuff over a slightly shortened hoof which the spikes from the ankles and chest of the tyrants. And the tube they are standing on is just a receipt paper roll.
Used a hobby saw again to cut off the tails to a shorter point and filled out with greenstuff.
The cloaks are made from about a 2 to 1 ratio of yellow to blue green stuff which does make them take quite a bit longer to dry and a bit more brittle however it allows the greenstuff to stretch and tear into very ragged edges which are perfect for robes/sheets covering monsters.

I use this little manual drill, plus the tip of the hobby knife if I need to gouge out the hole a little bigger. I'm wishing I'd bought one more like >>50641658; having chucks on both ends sounds cool, but the coolness disappears the moment the back end starts digging into your hand as you drill.
