You aren't, or at least probably aren't going to die from glue fumes in a normal-ish size room.

It ain't healthy in the slightest, but if that much would kill a human being, we'd have a lot less junkies huffing paint fumes because they'd all be fucking dead.
>>
>>50592861
speaking of glue fumes, how often should I be taking breaks using plastic glue for my minis. I'm pretty good about not getting any on my finger tips and I always keep the window open but damn it's a strong smell. and I build the stuff in my room so it dries overnight, am I giving myself plastic cancer?
>>
I straight up use superglue for everything.
Always loads in stock at poundland and it's safe for humans if you don't huff it. Much less fumes as polycement and doesn't cause harm if it gets into cuts.

allows me to snap and change parts if I realise a head sculpt looks bad painted, a weapon option is terrible or a pose is bad.

Never had a problem with models falling part, even when dropped it's rare for an arm to pop off.
>>
>>50592890
Just open your window every 2 hours for 5-10 minutes and leave the room for that time and its fine. Probably overly careful, but save.
>>
>>50592917

Same here. People who MUST use plastic glue are retards. The only time I'd even consider plastic glue is gluing vehicle hulls together.

Added to the copypasta. Solvents don't usually kill you all at once (but they can), they fuck you up in the long term.
Hobbyists don't get as much exposure as people in industry, but they don't wear anywhere near as much PPE or have a manager breathing down their necks.
Open your windows when working with solvents for the whole time and thank yourself in 30 years time.

A buddy of mine used to joke that the smell of organic solvents is the smell of your brain cells dying, and he wasn't far off.
If you get a headache you've already had short-term overexposure.

To, uh, change the subject to something new, I wasted to ask opinions on something I've been mulling over the last couple days. With how the technology's progressed, would it be possible and economically viable to 3D print a tank? I know its still expensive/hard to get any good detail on a miniature, but the idea in my head is for custom Gorgons and a Stormhammer for an Imperial Militia army I'm building. I don't want to rip off the models (I think the FW Stormhammer is a nice looking tank) but design something more fitting for my army's theme. I just wanted to know if anyone thought it'd be possible, or if I should put it out of mind.
>>
>>50594359

No. Custom parts like weapon shields and ramps? yeah.

Not an 8"+ tank

M1.jpg
85KB, 703x557px
>>50594359
Its possible, but not economical for most people.

Pic related for example is a 3d-printed M1 tank. The guy who prints it asks for $33 for it, which is not bad for a tank in this size and most historical resin tanks are only slightly cheaper (the M1 is kinda big though, compared with ww2 tanks at least).

He also sells a couple of other vehicles, prices range from $9-$44.
The thing is: He uses a really expensive printer. ($5000+) and he has 7 of them, and he needs that much because printing one such tank takes more than 12 hours.

Quality wise its not as good as top tier resin or plastic scale kits, but its certainly not bad either. There are worse wargaming tanks on the market for sure.
The big benefit is that he can design and print whatever you want, and fill gaps in the existing lines of other, bigger, companies. (His russian T-80 for example is the only one on the market at this point, and he can print it in any scale)

If you can afford the printers and if you are good at designing you can certainly print your own tanks (or rip off GWs designs which will cause you no problems as long as you aren't selling them).

But as Anon >>50594382
said, if you are mainly after GW tanks, Chinamen are a better choice at this point. But we'll see what the future brings.
>>
>>50594473
>>50594382
>>50594378

Alright, thanks guys. Maybe if I do get inclined to it, I'll see if I can grab some chinaman tanks and work them into the ideas I have in mind, maybe make custom parts on top of them. Its probably gonna be a while until I start on the idea, so I wanted some feedback while I'm still planning it.
>>
>>50594501
If you have ideas, you could ask the owner of "special artizan service miniatures" (the guy that does that M1) on facebook if he could design or print them for you.
If he sees potential to sell these items in his shop he probably will be able to help you and design the parts for you. (He did alot of stuff for people from the Bolt Action community to fill gaps in Warlord Games product range lately)

What's not particularly visible there is the godawful texture that most 3D prints that aren't hugely expensive have. It also depends on you having really good, detailed 3D models in the first place (that tank looks like it's somewhat lacking). >>50594378 has it right, 3D printing is perfect for something like making your own custom pauldrons, or even your own head to stick on your warlord (there are companies that will do this at the right scale), where the high material cost isn't a factor, but it's not suited to anything big.

A dark brown or even black (i'd go with brown first) pin wash might give you some better contrasts for your vehicles in general. That sepia wash seems a bit light.

I usually paint the colors on again after a wash, but that won't work with the camo pattern you choose. Pic related for example is base colors, then decals, then sepia wash (vallejo one, unthinned, so its pretty strong) and then brown, green and yellow re-painted while leaving a few spots of the darkend down colors from before.
Then i added a couple of chips here and there with a rust and then a metal color.

The tires are weathered with a mix from pigments (vallejo, but mig is just as good), pva-glue, water and a bit of matte varnish. Barely visible but underneath the vehicle i used a texture paint from vallejo

For weathering in general i recommend texture paint as a base and then dabbling on various washes and some pigments as well to give it a bit of color variety. I can show you a 2nd pic of that if you want.

Oh, and one thing i would do if i were you: The tracks of that Jagdpanzer: Paint them in a darker rust-like color, not pure metal. Only a slight metal drybrush to the very edges of the track links.

I'm biased, but it's certainly my favourite. Depending on who stops by, /btg/ (>>50597037) has its good days too, though.
>>
>>50598077
Basically this. Personally i would do it more subtle than in that pic, but thats a matter of taste i guess. Some people just like it rough.

This kind of chipping will achieve 2 effects: Your vehicles look more realistic and at the same time they get some kind of edge highlight which you can't really do in a way you would do it on a Space Marine tank because of the camo and the overall style.

On your yellow-ish vehicles a very dark brown ("red primer", or "rust tracks" by mig for example) might work best. A very dark grey also works well.

An alternative (not as good looking, but again.. taste) might be a subtly drybrush with a dust color over the whole vehicle.

It's nice. /edh/ is good when we don't have the one competitive EDH player shitting the board up. The guys at the /fvgt/ seem to have the right idea, but they kind of fucked it up by suggesting "Virtual 40k" as a thing. They seem to be doing well with some of the smaller wargames though.
>>
Does anyone have a size comparison between a Tau Broadside and an IG Chickenwalker
>>
>>50597720
It's the one general on /tg/ that doesn't go on meltdown every 2 days, for a bery simple reason imo.

You're judged on what you do and not what you say.
At the end of the day, people on the thread contribute with actual efforts (painting). You're less likely to shitpost about something you spent hours and hours and hours on end.

It might be a black and white opinion, but I kinda relates that to manual jobs vs intellectual jobs.

I feel like all the people in my family and that I know that works a manual job, like electrician, woodworker, house builder, etc, are more honest, trustworthy, and "real" if that makes sense.

Kinda the same here. We're all craftsmen, on a much smaller scale.
>>
>>50599662
Think you goofed there bud. Color scheme plus the mouth make it look too tzeentch. Since it looks like your trying to do a "Brazen bull" khorne/slaanesh thing i really think you missed the mark. Could be saved if you use purple from here and lots of gold for the ornaments but i dunno. Your choice.

Perhaps some Kriegers, maybe the engineers? They're a bit less "heroic scale" than the GW Cadians.

>>50599618
Maybe, but for gaming purposes I'd rather have a power weapon. I'll have to add some more power-y bitz to it.

As for the bitz, the left hand is from a BoP power sword, and the right hand & haft are from a WHFB kit, possibly some kind of Elf unit? I'm not entirely sure as I got the bit in a trade, and I can't find it online, sorry.

Rubber expands in cold and contracts in heat.

I saw a dumb fucker locally who didn't heed my warning about not using monkeymuck. Assembled and panted nicely a rhino, then left it in the trunk on a winter evening overnight to find out that it had bust appart at all of the seams. It was reportedly a bitch to repair, since he had to scrape off all of the ape adheasion off before he could get anything to bond again properly.

>>

>>
>>50591905
Again I reiterate, /wip/ sucks. The reason, people like yourself anon post pictures asking for help and either bitches reply or you get no reply at all.

Not today anon, i am here to help. I would say use red for the tattoos. It would contrast against your colors, matches the flavor of DE markings, and if ya wanted you could take the work/time to make it look like branding instead of tattoos.

My critique of your models is that the lighter highlights on your armor is to messy. Simple fix, use black to trim some of those lines down. The wing themselves look cool af and i will be using your pic to help with my mass painting of my scourges.

Keep it up my fellow pointy-eared, tourture loving, pirate anon.
>>
>>50600443
It also bonds an absolute ton of water, which is why cold quite destroys super-glue (hint, water expands when it freezes), not because it's a "rubber" material. It's an acrylate crystal once set.

>>
>>50600538
Yeah man that's totally why only his vehicles popped seams in 15F and mine didn't.

The fucking product page suggests against using their product on anything outdoors, and says that while the bond can withstand extremes(as can other CAs) they warn against expansion and contraction because the product has rubber in it.

It's a good product for repairing your broken transformers or other toys that stay inside, see impact, and aren't painted projects.

It's not a safe product to use on minis because the rubber can expand and ruin your assembly and paintjob.
>>
>>50600086
The problem is, you can have the best, most thought out idea in the world, but if it's executed like shit, it'll be treated like shit.
On the other hand, the simplest methods of painting, but done perfectly will always be appreciated.

See Red Talons anon for an example. No fancy techniques, no grand idea of revolutionary conversions. It's simple stuff, but done flawlessly, and it gets all the (deserved) praise on the world.
>>
>>50600675
Red and yellows are among the lightest colors and you typically do not try to put them on top of a black primer/basecoat for this exact reason. You want white primer/basecoat if your scheme is mostly red, yellow, or white. If you only have SOME red, you go with a grey primer/basecoat.

But the problem is everyone on here thinks people are all experts. This board was/should be about constructive criticism on all level, from beginner to expert. The board is call /work in progress/ not /lets all stroke our egos showing off what we can do/.

Someone in this specific thread, might be yourself anon i have to figure, said opinions on here are black and white. That is bullshit, /wip/ a year ago wasnt about that. It was about fostering skill so we could all grow as a community.

Example. The OP of this board was told to make a new thread so he could have a chance to post his work so other could help him progress. Not a single person said anything for 80+ post. That is crap.

/Wip/ has become a elitist thread. With the majorty of skilled painters straight up leaving the hobby because it has become to pricey this board has, in the aftermath, become nothing more then 12 year old SM players who have been painting since they were 8 showing off their "skills" to other 12 year olds.

Ages might be skewed but same mentality.
>>
>>50600086
>>50600536

I think you are a bit to harsh.
Yes, its sad that sometimes average minis or pictures don't get replies. I'll come to that in a second.
If the pic is shit, then the comments will be shit as well. It takes maybe one or two minutes to copy a pic from a smartphone to a computer, open it in paint, resize it to 44%, maybe cut the borders away a little so its only the mini and not the whole room and then save it as jpg.
If you spend hours to build and paint something than you certainly have these few minutes for a decent pic as well if you want some replies.

Now about the lack of comments at acceptable stuff: For example these eldar minis (>>50591905 )
, i saw the pic, looked at them and i couldn't think about a suggestion for colors. I'm sorry but thats how it is, and before i start shitposting or give advise out of my ass i prefer to say nothing in the hope that someone with a better idea or simply more creativity can give a better answer. I assume thats the case for many people in here. Next example is >>50597849
Not a great pic at all, but people gave advise (me among them), because i think i know a thing or two about historical minis and painting tanks.

Yes, it might be frustrating to get no replies but nobody gets ignored on purpose or forever. Maybe next the update photo of these eldar minis will get more comments. Don't get discouraged so easily!

>With the majorty of skilled painters straight up leaving the hobby because it has become to pricey

I doubt it.

Lots of "old" people are still here. (For example, i know for a fact that almost 80% of last years Secret Santa participants did sign up this year again) And even if some guys quit, a lot of new people joined like its always the case. (SS again, last year it was 15 people, this year its almost 80).

>/Wip/ has become a elitist thread.

That is simply not true. If anything the "THIN YA PAINTS" shitposting has become less frequent if someone posts something really bad. People in general are still extremely helpful in here.
>>

Plastic or metal minis?
If metal: Acetone from your local Bauhaus or Obi. Just drop it in and the paint will go away.

If plastic: mellerud pvc-fußbodenreiniger, either from a Baumarkt or from Amazon

Soak the plastic mini over night in the Mellerud stuff and then brush it with a toothbrush the next day and the paint will come off.

except not, you obviously don't look at most wip posts. having people put a few highlights on models isn't a fucking elitist complaint, find me something in this thread that looks elitist.

Because there isn't any. If /wip/ wanted to be elitist, we'd be slamming down peoples throats asking them why they aren't doing nmm on everything, or correct blending techniques, etc, but no, most of it is simple praise with a bit of constructive criticism.

A few details here:
The little electronic thingies on the hood would gain from being painted metallic, right now it is more of a blue, uniform mass.
A few bright edge highlights around the shoulders and hood might look good.
And finally, but that's mostly personnal opinion, I feel the ridge of the base would gain from being painted a darker colour, to give a stark contrast. But it's mostly a habit for me so I guess I'm just not used to non-black bases' ridges.

Have you used GW paint on primer? If so you'll need another base coat of either white, black or grey (white for red). The pot primer is only really for allowing your paint to adhere to the model, it's a sort of pre-primer.
>>
>>50602149

I think you're using 'primer' where undercoat or even basecoat is more appropriate. We prime to allow paints to adhere at all, we undercoat if our primer isn't a suitable undercoat for the paint we want to use. It's nitpicky but less confusing than 'pre-primer'

Wrong.
Victoria Lamb was comissioned to do them for White Dwarf. They later made another appearance in the How to paint Space Marines book.
With that they are not done by a GW employee and they also didn't just appear once.
They're an official Chapter. Period.

They're also a play on Karate Kid, so they fit right in with the rest of 40k in terms of pop culture references.

Pardon me? If you're asking what they cost, not nuch at all. I built a Fire Warrior box as Breachers, which leaves 10 heads and shoulderpads/backpacks, and 20 extra weapon sets (rifles/carbines)

Boxes of Cadians are 10$ for 5 guys. So with a little bit of work, you can get both options of the original box for 20$ more. Thats if you put a weapon, helmet, backpack, and shoulderpad on each guy. Im sure it could stretch to 15 cadians

I like the last one because the white/red/silver one looks clean and has the strongest contrast.
The other ones aren't bad either, orange is the more original choice, although a very unusual heraldic color, but the way it came out in your mockup it looks very washed out.
If you are going for a neon orange that punches you in the eyeball with saturation when you actually paint the thing that's a different story then.

Adding to the chorus of "dark but not black recess wash", and some chipping but don't go overboard with it. Also, you might consider getting some typhus corrosion (a citadel technical paint). Aside from its obvious applications as mud-splatter you can get an extremely realistic "grimy grey-brown dusty vehicle undercarriage parts" look by slathering it on tracks and even tank wheels then lightly drybrushing silver. It doesn't look filthy, just like the bottom of your car.

The nubs from where you clipped the parts off the sprue but did not scrape/slice/file the remains off will be noticeable, unless your paintjob is so thick and lumpy it completely hides it.

I'm not picking on you or anything. I miss some mold lines too, or am simply unable to remove them properly in the case of some Forge World parts, but things like these little nubs are very easily sliced off or sanded down before you glue the part together, especially when they are on such flat pieces. They're going to cause bumps when you paint.

Posting an obscenely large image is obnoxious, it's like posting your entire message in Capital letters, you don't don't do it

Not to mention the image Is difficult to view, makes your models look like ass.

You do *not* need to post a 5000 x 5000 4.99mb picture of your latest effort when you can do one of two things.

1. Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer&hl=en_GB to shrink the photo

the warp is messing with my mind today.

Why does Duncan make painting Magnus seem so easy?

To be fair like 80% of the detail is on his armour so if you don't paint that, you don't have much work.

Maybe the attack on Fenris would have succeeded, had he gone there with only a loincloth and his cyclopean dong flapping in the wind.
The SW wpuls have been too awestruck to do anything, with Lulas the trickster mumbling he still got those 12 women in one night to vouch for the power of his own manhood.

So We've established it'd look baller.

Any ideas on how to affix it?

I used the original mount and cowling to make a chest cannon for my stompa.

As is the gun piece itself is about 5 mm wider than the rotating baseplate for the original Razorback gun so im considering if i should drop the til function and just glue it straight onto the baseplate and hide the peg holes and fill in gaps.

Sure. I'm just about to open the little bags.

I guess you can look for "infinity red veil" on google or a store website if you can't wait. He literally sent me the whole 80€ starter set.

How to paint jade gem?
like on this bloodcrusher.
>>
>>50612358
Some paint by making a mix of green with streak of white and then doing pure white veins on the wet paint.
>>
>>50612358
I did it with several layers of sponge/stippled greens. Later coats were mixed with a glazing medium to make them semi transparent. Veins were painted in dark green and bone colors. Gloss varnish at the end for a shiny polished stone look.
