After over a year of not painting went through with my plan to strip down my entire army and redo things with my own color scheme

This is just a test model for now to see how the scheme looks and to brush up on my painting

Thoughts?

Hey /wip/, I'm thinking of painting some CSM in pic related scheme but I don't know what to use for the orange. I think Vallejo has the paints that I'll need, but I'm not too familiar with their range. Can someone recommend a base and two highlight colors?

so, I'm starting up a big project. I'm gonna turn all the deathwatch character from the box-set into chaos space marines, of different warbands that already exist. I've begun work on the Cassius model, and I will turn him into a Word bearer. The terminator-dude will be turned into a "Dragon Warrior" as they are quite similar to the Salamanders from the get.go.

Though, I am having some problems with the others, in term of which warbands to strive for. any tips?

>Brimstone Horrors are essentially little flames with faces
I was thinking of how I can possibly create some from scratch (thanks to the Wrath of Magnus leaks showing these things are cheap as chips Troop choices).

Silicone caulking left to cure a little bit, then molded a bit like glassblowers do it. Leave to fully cure and voila, wispy flame-like tentacle-ridden buggers with faces. Could mix in glycerin so the silicone cures throughout gradually and can even mix in some paint to make them in funky colours (half-prepainted models, woo!)

God blass the fucker that came up with metallic medium.

12 marines gotten their metallic purple basecoat in the time it normally took me to do one or two with my old technique. Some of them still might get a second coat, but hot dang i finally feel motivated to getting around to finishing my army.

buy nurglings, seperate so there is 2 or 3 per base.

then chop off the horns, cut the middle bit out so theyre short spikes. glue them back on.

then greenstuff some more flames with wavy spikes.

It's metallic medium to turn a normal acryllic paint metallic looking, not a special medium meant specifically for metallics. Don't know if that's even a thing.
>>
>>50403251
That's a good idea, but I thought of the silicone so I don't have to buy any actual models and make my own for dirt cheap. How many can I reasonably make from a box of nurglings?
>>
>>50403295

Metallic medium is just what the name implies, it turns normal paint metallic. Like how glaze medium makes normal paint a glaze.

Hm. If I use minimum 2 per base and just set the piles on a base themselves, I'm looking at 13 and 1 extra nurgling. With a bit of careful trimming, can easily pop out maybe 4 or 5 extra bases worth. Might be looking at a possible 20-man squad actually. But I'm so shit at greenstuffing, it's ridiculous..

To make you feel a little better, there are high quality metallic paints from for example the Vallejo line, which require alcohol as a thinning medium.

So after deciding to completely rebuild and repaint my Emperors Children, after them being in stasis sleep for 8 years.

But I felt like the Sonic Weapons look goofy as fuck and decided to fix them myself by making a copy of the Forgeworld Sonic Dreadnought's Doom Siren (so glad I never used that thing) and attaching its head to a sonic blaster.
Still very WIP, but I feel like this will look great. The small head of the Doom Siren will be perfect for the Blastmaster, but first I'll finish this one.

this works just as well for Iron Hands/Raven Guard/Dark Angels. Just dont do the Red on the kneepad.

Although paint the bolter casing light grey, or white. Because otherwise too much black.

for bare flesh, use Rakarth flesh because its more unhealthy and pale looking.

Base black, leadbelcher, pewter rub 'n' buff, carriburg crimson wash, drybrush 2nd layer of rub n buff, multiple thinned coats of tamiya clear red, 50/50 wash of lahmium medium/carriburg crimson.

Do you guys know a good guide for black fur?
>>
>>50403913
I watched a guy paint with his feet a while ago.
>>
So here's hoping you guys can offer a bit of "unique" advice.

I landed a new job recently but it soaks up most of my free time. This cuts pretty hard into time for painting as one could imagine.

I still want to army build but I dunno. How do you guys "deal" with the fact that your army might be unpainted for a good while? I know that sounds odd, but when they're not painted I can't but feel "lesser," if that makes sense.
>>
>>50403913

I started, but the following happens

1. They forget to talk if they're on for a while
2. The camera drops out of focus or it's hard to see what they're doing
3. They not very charismatic
4. It's awkward

Emma, formerly of WarhammerTV paints on there as ElectricEve and gets plenty of donations and autismbux from thirsty viewers.

The best one is Grendler, who is a bro tier nordic guy, I forget where exactly but nice guy and chats a fair bit.
>>
>>50407533

This happened to me so I bought an airbrush.

I prime my army incredibly quickly

I basecoat my army (armour panels, skin, metallics) with the airbrush as well, so I AT LEAST, have a base coated army I can then go and tidy up later when I have time.

Which is 1000x better than a sea of grey plastic
>>
>>50407568
I hate Emma.. and i hate that she has 90% of the entire "figurines"-viewers whenever she is online even if her stuff is nowhere near as good as others.

Grendler is cool. So are Flikkstr and Geitmeise. Kenny from Next Level painting is streaming too, but not as often. Kinda nice guy as well.

My favorite is Noise Marine. Sadly he often talks in russian with his russian viewers but he is extremely skilled with the airbrush and he paints different minis than always the same GW stuff the others seem to focus on (which is fine, but gets boring after a while if everyone is only painting eldar and space marines).

But you are right with your points, lots of the guys do these mistakes, but its not an extremely big deal for me. Its kinda nice to have a stream running while painting myself.. it motivates me to get shit done.
>>
>>50407533
As I'm one of those guys not willing to compromise when it comes to quality, here's some advice that doesn't concern painting methods or helpers.

Set aside at least an evening every week for painting and set yourself clear goals. I have a fairly time consuming job myself and I aim to get at least 5 hours of painting in every week besides going to the gym 3 times a week, playing vidya, actually playing warhammer and various social obligations.

Also, as you get more comfortable with your new timetable you'll notice that you can partition your free time better and better and you can set aside more time for painting.
>>
>>50407533
Don't buy whole armies at once.
Only buy one box and try to do a little bit of hobby stuff each day after (or before) work. Do more during the weekends.
So the whole unpainted stuff won't discourage you.

IF you already have a ton of unfinished minis, store them away and only place a few minis on your desk to work on at a time. Once these are finished, pull out the next minis.
>>
>>50407632

I do not know Flikkstr or Geitmeise but I cannot take Kenny seriously, because the endless...

>Bruh, we're gonna get out Rhinox Hide on good there, awww yeah dawg, take it all, so fresh so so fresh, look at how that Rhinox mofo applies, yo dawg, it's the top and so fresh

And I hate Emma for the reasons you do as well, she really isn't that great compared to the guys that get much less views than her, she can be really rude at times to viewers.

She will only be toppled by a prettier girl, not more talented, prettier.

YO DAWG.. no seriously, he can paint very good and he is kinda entertaining. I'm from EU and he is american so i rarely can watch his streams so maybe thats why he isn't annoying me yet.

Geitmeise is from Scandinavia and has a nice gallery page set up for his viewers where you can upload your WIP or finished stuff and he will show the pics during his stream to share them with the viewers and talk about the minis and give tipps etc. I like that alot.

There was this one guy whose stream I caught once last month (and he hasn't streamed since unfortunately) who was really bro-tier, and chatted with the stream about the novels and lore while working on his minis. From time to time he would do an audiobook-hour and we'd all listen to some of the good audiobooks together. It was actually really nice to work on my own stuff along with him. I wish he would start streaming again :(

>>
>>50409152
Because enough people are going to buy it anyway that they don't need to put it on discount. They already offer Start Collecting and the 'board game' boxes below the cost of the individual kits that make them up to get people into the hobby.

Basically they use SC and board game boxed sets the same way other businesses use loss-leaders and doorcrashers. Then they don't need to discount their other shit.

>>
>>50409271
It's a very clear photo at least!
>>
>>50409271
You'll get better with time, don't worry. I remember my first minis looked just like that. Especially with the eyes, it took me a while before I actually could paint the lenses properly.
>>
>>50409271
1. You generally don't want to apply shades / washes to flat panels because it turns them into an uneven mess like that marine's helmet and legs. Instead apply them carefully into the recesses on the model (like those carvings on the upper thighs and groin armour). If you do apply a wash all over then after it dries (30 minutes or so) go over the flat armour panels with your basecoat colour again and repaint it such that the wash is only visible in the recesses. I find this is more work so I just do my washes neatly instead.

2. When painting you generally want to work from the 'inside out'. Like for marines I would paint the eye lenses first, that way you can slop red (is that red? I'm R-G colourblind) on the lenses and around the lense-socket and then when you basecoat the armour in green you can neaten up around the eye. Same goes for the metal tubing at the hip, knee, elbow, and wrist joints.

3. Drilling your weapons isn't just a meme. It's a really easy way to add some detail. (Just use the tip of your hobby knife and a couple spins to drill in a hole if you don't have a pin vise.)

So, basically. Strip it down and try again.
>>
>>50409271

You've kept the paint pretty thin which is definitely a good start (seriously, there's a reason THIN YOUR PAINTS is a meme, because that is a huuuge fucking amount of the hobby), but you need to work on your brush control and coverage. It looks like you didn't prime him and the color scheme is kind of... pukey. If you're gonna put green and yellow together, it needs to be a darker green and a brighter yellow.

A Much better paint scheme for the Alpha legion (pic related for example) is as follows:

Airbrush with thinned Tamiya Gunmetal (thin all Tamiya colours with Tamiya X-20A Thinner)

Airbrush from top of model with thinned Tamiya Flat Aluminum

Mix Tamiya Clear Green with Tamiya Clear Blue in 10/90 mix and airbrush over the model in 2 light, thin coats

Airbrush armour panels with Tamiya Clear Blue. Blend from middle of figure down, so the strongest blue colour is at the bottom of the armour panels

Airbrush from the middle upwards with Tamiya Clear Green, so strongest green colour is at the top of the armour panels

Using an airbrush, blend a highlight on the highest panels (head, shoulder pads, top of backpack) with Tamiya Flat Aluminum with a tiny amount of very thinned down Tamiya Sky Blue

Apply thinned coat of Tamiya Clear Blue over the highlight and blend into the surrounding area

For the silver: basecoat with Citadel Leadbelcher, highlight with Vallejo Model Air Steel and wash with Citadel Nuln Oil

Chipping: hit edges with Citadel Leadbelcher in striking motions and highlight with Citadel Ironbreaker

I've never heard that euphemism either in the 30 years I've lived here, but I do recall some unusual cases where back-water (Burleson -not too far from here) law-enforcement officers took it upon themselves to "clean up the filth" in their towns and charge women with obscenity crimes for selling "marital aids" at parties that are similar to Tupperware parties.

ok so 2 things
1: why would you ruin what was already perfect
2. In order to orkify things, you need to add extra armor panels and extra shooty and choppy bits, add ork heiroglyphs, and paint it red. adding sights is neat, but literally falls short of everything ork.

Current work in progress is this Sister of Silence! I'm working on the streamy things hanging off her.

>>50413976
I really like how gold and bronze look with a silver highlight.

>>50414314
Please remove the random hairs from the model. Are the splashes of colour at the bottom / cut of the robe supposed to be highlights? They're very inconsistent. You need to thin your paints, the antennae on the vox shouldn't be that textured.

Okay, so to Ork something up you want to take some plasticard, then take a saw to it so it looks all jagged, then glue it on where the armor LOOKS thin. Not where it IS thin, where it LOOKS thin.

To an Ork, this is anywhere the armor won't fall off when the machine starts moving.

Next you need sawblades. Stick them to anything that can be made to swing. Arm, leg, mechanical bull penis, whatever. If it swings, make it chop.

Finally, put some sigils in. Ork sigils. And paint it RED. That'll make it FAST.
>>
>>50414381
Most of that is my hand being unsteady. The black on the robe is spilled glue that I couldn't clear in time, kind of fused over the gap between the leg and the coat. Hobby knife didn't want to cut through so I can't do much with it.

The random hair and such is actually dust. You leave things sitting still for a fucking day in this house and it happens, the dryer is right beneath my room and it doesn't have an external vent.

The splotches that you are talking about are the inside color of the robe getting over to the outside, getting a consistent edge between the two colors is beyond me at this point.

The metallics are a bitch for me, as I don't have any medium to thin them with yet, thinning with water just results in shitty brush marks no matter what I do. And I don't know if I could've dry-brushed stuff that small.

Side note: Fucking nice armor there m80, one day I hope to be that dank.

most of painting talent comes from practice and thinned paint. I, for one, practice on sprues, trying to paint thin lines/highlighting them. Ghetto as fuck, but I'm poor. Once you get medium, it'll be a lot nicer, as soon as you find out (also through practice) to right amount to use to thin well.

At the risk of sounding like a shill, is anyone else just really excited for the new Thousand Sons?
I don't care if the rules are shit (which they apparently are), it's nice to be getting some love and the new models are fucking beautiful. I've been into 40k for a few years now and have a Daemon army (mostly Tzeentch but I occasionally summon some Khorne and Slaanesh units, never Nurgle cuz muh fluff) but this is the first new release I've ever actually been hyped for.

Question though: It says for the preorders that they will SHIP on December 3rd. I called my local GW store and the fella there said that it was saying the same thing for the stuff he ordered to stock up on and he's pretty sure it's a typo. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I'm excited to get my shit and I really don't wanna have to wait an extra week after it comes out.
>>
>>50415745
Have we really grown so cynical that liking new models (including that fucking brilliant Magnus model) makes people shills?
>>
>>50415797

Guy you're replying to here. I like to think there are a decent number of people like us around who can still get excited, but with GW's (admittedly high and still rising) prices, you run the risk of being called a shill any time you express interest in purchasing anything from them.

I have a lot of disposable income so preordering that stuff was nothing to me, and I'm still really excited to get it.

Has anyone painted the "Mightly lord of Khorne" from the Age of Simar starter box who can recommend how to do it with sub assemblies? the only way I could think involves so many steps (mask and paint body with left arm off, prime and paint lower cloak region and most of chest, then assemble the two halves over the body, fill the gap, hand prime, paint the upper cloak and headguard, paint the left hand, assemble the damn thing, stick him on a base)

do most people fully assemble him first?

This is true, but think about what's coming. We're finally getting new Thousand Sons with new rules, and the very first Primarch model meant to be used with 40K.
There are also plastic Sisters of Battle on the way, something the fanbase has been begging for for a fucking decade.

We also finally have Sisters of Silence and Custodes models. So what if they're made for a 30k game? The point is we have the models.

At this point, just building your own rules (in a cave, with a box of scraps) is easier and cheaper than trying to keep up with GW.

Get another lamp, put daylight bulbs in both. Build some sort of lip/edge on the far right and left (short) edges, that way you can store things/have loose things such as a paintbrush near them without having to worry about it rolling off the edge. Get spice racks or similar to store your paint.
If you can be bothered/can afford it get some sort of plain white or black flooring (i.e. a sheet) under your desk and with a little bit of overspill, means when you inevitably drop a little piece you don't have to spend an age looking for it in the carpet.

Ok, the mini is huge and has good details. (Personally i find him ugly as fuck, but thats just my opinion and he clearly looks like he was described in the books so its ok i guess).

Now the cons:
A fucking primarch. In 40k. Aren't there enough super strong units already? I think, from a pure gaming pov, this is a terrible direction they are going.
This opens the door to all kinds of retarded overpowered bullshit they are going to pull out of their ass in the future.
