Whats the point?

If you are doing melee weapons and pistols the poses are mostly open so you can reach each spot easily.
>>
>>50375883
It sounds like a neat idea, I say go for it and worse case remove and try again.
>>
>>50375977
Ended up doing it for the sake of it being honest. All the gubbins hanging off the belts was pissing me off just looking at it and things escalated.

How many chinamen are there? Which one is the best? I know about Zanchui, but I'm curious to know if there are higher quality people.
>>
>>50376096

Zanchui is one of the best but there's hundreds. You can find them via aliexpress and reddit.
>>
>>50376096
CCON is my go to. Has near perfect casts and lately tons of sales. Z may be the cheapest and with the widest selection but tends to be very hit and miss. Miranda Irene is expensive but good quality. Pillpit is expensive but near perfect quality

>>
>>50376513
I mostly look for specific models and if they have other things that look good I watch them. It baffles me that people come on here asking how to paint something but they don't just search youtube and watch a video tutorial. Almost every model in ever color scheme has a youtube tutorial, telling you what colors to use, when and how to use the colors and washes and shows you what the final outcome should be.

Also on the topic of youtubers I hate nextlevelpainting, it pisses me off that he calls every god damn thing a hack. Also his videos are 10% painting 90% jerking off.
>>
>>50376843
Back in my day... About all you had to go on was some 'eavy metal picture off the box or white dwarf.
>>
>>50376979
I started painting before youtube too. I got a games workshop starter kit that had little paint jars and told you how to do faces, cloaks, and leather bags. I kept that little tutorial sheet with me for the longest time and used it for many warbands and armies. I would also save white dwarf tutorials.

But the point is, at this time there is no excuse for not knowing how to paint a miniature.

Whoops!

So as you can see, I sort of messed up my Kastelan assembly. I thought I'd use the locking pins for my first one, but accidentally used the feet from one sprue with the legs of another - causing this unstable pose.

Do you think I can still make it work? I'm thinking use green stuff to secure it to the base, then having it pointing its right arm-cannon forward and having the other hanging down, as if its firing while on the move

Your thoughts, chaps?

Also, yeah, I know those mouldlines exist. I've marked them down enough that they shouldn't show after painting it

It's really going to depend on how the torso sits and the arms are positioned to see how goofy it'll be in the end. Those are some hefty mouldlines and remainders of sprue where you clipped the pieces off though, gat dang.

Hey guys. May be a bit of a silly question but maybe one of you has one of these and can vouch for them. Need a lamp and torn between these 2 which were both recommended

TOTALLY FORGOT that I had blu-tack, so I can practice this pose beforehand

I'll probably have the gun pointed a little lower (want it to be straight, not slightly up like shown) and the head will be looking in the same direction as the pointing gun arm

What do we think now?

The maplin's ok. Has basically 3 height positions and occasionally slips from the highest so if you're really only interested in the lamp aspect maybe not the best.

At that price though it's hard to complain.

Everything else above the waist is still blu-tacked, but I think this can REALLY work!

What do you guys think? Also, should the back mounted weapon be pointing up (like it's holstered) or pointing forward at the same angle as the arm?)
>>
>>50379502
I think it looks good. I'd mount the shoulder weapon pointing in the same direction as the arm, to continue the sense of movement in the model. It looks like it's turning towards an enemy.
>>
>>50378939
Nice painting.
Like the color scheme.
If you are open to suggestions I'd try to find a way to blend the skintone on the face with the chtinous armor plates somehow.
Maybe a gradient from a very light skintone to the regular one, like the light tone echoes the chtinous plates or something.

The basing right now kind of makes me thing underhive.
So I'd expect there to be garbage like strewn about papers or discarded food packagings, empty shellcasings, pices of scrap, puddles of various fluids maybe even toxic sludge and stuff like that.
>>
>>50379168
Cool. I've never really used a daylight lamp before. Do colours look the same or similar as they do under sunlight?

I'm having some wash related issues at the moment, trying to apply a black wash over a silver basecoat, the wash isn't really running freely over the model and it's just pooling in weird places (e.g. next to a gap/crevice not in it). Anyone have any idea why it's doing this/any idea about how to fix this?
>>
>>50380144
It should be pretty diffuse, it shouldn't be stronger than the daylight lamp, it just needs to contribute a little red basically.
I have a pretty bright daylight lamp to paint by, but the soft warm lights in my room help correct the blue sheen.

Any tips for some darker CSM world eaters?

Was thinking basecoat in a deep brown > heavy read > heavy red/ blood red 50 > blood red highlights then agrax earthshade wash as the last step.

Would this maybe be a little too dark? I know a lot of people prefer red washes but I kinda like that grimy look the agrax earthshade gives reds.

Yeah The torso + head is already glued in

I don't really know what to paint the faceplate. The standard scratched metal would be nice, but maybe I could do the same green glass as all the eyesockets of my other Mechanicus forces? Put some 'ardcoat on top, make it really shine?

The thing is you can paint in a minimalist way and get spectacular results provided you have the brush control to make it look clean enough.

If you are not a particularly clean painter that can look messy/unfinished though.

Here are a few different ways to paint marines.
>>
>>50380468
>>50380454
Honestly the way you've set yours up looks really good. You could always paint the faceplate as one of those old green computer screens. Also there is a head that gets posted quite a lot in the WIP threads (to lazy to find it) that looks like the inside of the head, so if you did more one could have that head with a hollowed out normal head on his belt like an unworn helmet? How are you going to paint them as well?

>>
>>50381034

It makes them seem more programmed by a tech adept imo. The distance from prone to aiming is shorter. That and humans do the same thing, since aiming two guns at the same time is nigh impossible but switching between arms really fast is something anyone can do with training.

You should have started with a darker grey. Looks really sharp and clean though. I would mix white into the color you did the edge work with, and do extra-fine edge highlights if you don't want to use washes, but personally I would do the above in addition to a wash.

How much am I supposed to be watering down my paints? I'm having trouble finding that balance between having it too watery and too thick.

I started collecting 40k this year and I'm painting orks. I paint the skin in Waagh Flesh, wash it with Biel-Tan Green and then layer it with Warboss Green. I have no problems with the first two but when layering I find that I sometimes make the paint too runny and it seeps into the crevices I'm trying to avoid or it's too thick and ends up looking chunky and clogging up detail. This also happens when paiting the teeth.

I've gotten it right sometimes but I recently painted a stormboy and ended up watering the warboss green too much and it ended up seeping into the face details. It's really annoying.

>>
>>50384213
if it's so runny it wont stay on the raised surfaces and tends to bead into drops, it's too watered down.

if it's so thick it obscures any detail, it's too thick.

you just find the middle point for what you need to do.
if you're detailing the raised edges on a flag or some shit, you really dont want to water it down much, if at all.

conversely, if you're trying to cover a large area with paint evenly, water it down a lot.

In text form:
Base with Balthasar Gold
Wash with Druchii Violet
Layer and neaten up with Balthasar Gold (avoid the recesses where the Druchii Violet went)
Rough highlight with Sycorax Bronze
Fine highlight with Stormhost Silver

Balthasar Gold is a nice darker gold compared to Retributor Armour which is just out-and-out shiny ass gold. I wasn't really sold on the idea of washing it with a violet wash but honestly I can live with how it turned out!

Have a Wyvern I'm working on and a question:
I'm painting a Leman Russ and i noticed that I forgot to prime the "inside" of the spoonson weapons, as in the sides towards the hull but I already painted enough that's its going to be a pain in the ass to cover it and only spray the missing spots.
Do you guys think it'll be ok if I just paint directly on plastic? It's not an area that will get touched/scratched a lot (if at all) and if the colour comes a bit uneven it's not going to be a big deal.

Huh? I think you were replying to someone else, otherwise that has nothing to do with my question.

>>
>>50390597

If you wanted primer, Vallejo black 200 ml bottles are what you want, they're amazing even when brushed on.

Primer isn't supposed to be glossy though, and you can just mix normal black paint with gloss varnish if you want glossy black.
>>
>>50390038
How did they painted those bases? I like them.
>>
>>50390647
I said paint or primer... why are you telling me to use non-gloss primer.

Am I not making the question clear? I want to apply a proper coat of gloss black to use fancy metal paints.

The AK gloss black is a mess. The Alclad version is a pain because it's like the other Alclad paints. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with other brands, e.g. Tamiya's gloss black.

>>50390647
I'm a Vallejo black man too, it's pretty fucking good, and allows you to prime even if its shit weather, which is my case most of the time.
>>
>>50390786
I don't think you're going to get that kind of gloss out of an acrylic paint. I'd go 2 step; do a black coat, then back it up with a gloss clear (floor polish would be my go to).
>>
>>50390786

Not him but:

Glossy surfaces don't allow things to stick very well, which defeats the purpose of primer.

You need to paint the metallic surface first, then use a clear paint to get the super glossy sheen.
>>
>>50390914
Oh, as for specific brands, Alclad makes some good stuff for this.

>Anyone have experience painting BFG? Is it significantly different from normal mini painting?

Depends on which faction you're talking about, but in general, yes.

Many of the techniques that work at 28mm scale simply don't apply when you're looking at models that are effectively sub-6mm scale. Sure, you'll want to thin your paints better than I did all those years ago, and washes will go a long way, but pretty much your entire project is going to be painting what amounts to gribbly little details. Unless you're the Tau, it's not gonna be like painting Space Marines where there are large areas for you to saturate with your favourite colours.
>>
>>50390786

Are you stupid or something? Prime black, glosscoat it and you're done. No such thing as glossy primer, that defeats the purpose of primer which is to create a "rough"surface.

What do people use to thin their paints? Obviously there's water but I heard you can have issues with drying/metallics.
>>
>>50392171
GW does Lahmian Medium, which seems to be a combination of matte medium and flow improver. Works quite well but is expensive.

Then there are the many, many brands of matte medium, flow improver, metallic medium, etc that are available. All will thin paints and usually with a better result than water. One brand to look out for is Liquitex, I use their Flow Improver and it's great stuff.
>>
>>50392215
I've seen Liquitex's Flow aid stuff online, how do you use it? Is it just a simple case of dropping a little bit into your paint?
>>
>>50392241
You're meant to dilute it with water and then add it to the paint on your palette. It's important not to use too much as it will make the pigment and medium in your paint split apart and create this weird watery patchy mess. You can also use a matte medium (or a metallic one, if you're thinning metallics) to avoid this - the paint won't split if you use way too much, but the colour will become incredibly transparent, requiring lots of layers. I use both flow improved and matte medium, diluted as per the instructions on the bottle, to thin my paints.

Minigun barrels are actually pretty easy to scratchbuild.

Get some styrene/plasticard tubing, and some styrene rods. Cut a short piece of tubing, and a few small lengths of rod. Cram the rod into the tubing so that you have three or more "barrels" poking out of the tube. Glue them in place, let them dry completely, then cut one or two more narrow slices of styrene tubes to make rings around the barrel cluster. You'll want to sand the rings and barrel housing so that they have even, parallel ends. Unless you're an ork.

Don't bother trying to get the barrels exactly the same length until they've all been glued together. Then trim and sand them all at once to get a nice flush look. You can also trim/sand the other end to make it the right length, and prep it for gluing to the rest of your model.

If you're very careful, you can cut some parallel notches near the tip to make it look like compensator grooves. Or you can just have a ring around the tip like the Taurox cannons posted earlier.

The pic was my first attempt, when I was trying to figure out how to do this. The gunkiness is from glue residue and shit.

All this being said, buying some styrene tube and rods will probably be close to the $7-10 price point of buying gun bitz from ebay. So if this is the only gun you're going to ever scratchbuild, the bitz route may be less work for only a couple dollars extra.

Hello everyone! I have a legion alpha army, but i haven´t painted them yet because i haven´t a clear scheme in mind and the really cools around there are made with airbrush, which i can´t afford right now. I´ve found recently a place in my town where they sell tamiya metallic blue. Do you know an alpha legion scheme with it? Could you give me some advice painting this army?
In advance, thank you!

It's not that, his primer is super gritty. Sucks because the conversions are cool and the brushwork isn't even bad, just fecked up primer
>>
>>50396987
Depending on the size of the toy, deff dread or killa kan would be my option. Looted wagons are transports, so I doubt the bot has enough volume to make it credible. Would definitely look better as a wholly cobbled together "walker" than as something looted.

If it's small enough, it could be a meganob or warboss/mek in mega armor.
>>
>>50397083
Judging by its size compared to the ciggie pack I'd say its a bit bigger than a Dreadnaught so it would be better suited as a Deff Dread
>>
>>50396606

Our lord Duncan himself actually talked about this in one of the tip of the day segments:

>>
>>50394016
>>50394036
What's the logic for this?
>>
>>50397477
easier to paint the details, as well as the back of the head, and the armor the head is on. just like how many paint the backpacks separately as well so they can get at the back of the armor easier so theres no lame primer parts showing at extreme angles.
>>
>>50397477
Getting in to paint the heads can be a bitch when they're attached to the mini's bodies. It's easier to just paint them separately and then glue them on than to try to work around the entire rest of the model to paint the head.

You'll end up missing a lot of areas on say, a Space Marine, if you painted their heads attached, since their armor has collars, the backpack, pauldrons, etc. to work around.

elf highlights.jpg

>>50389313
>>50387920

Picture quality/lighting is probably contributing, but I think your highlight is not contrasting enough with the basecoat. The overall effect is that detail appears "soft" and indistinct. More contrast between highlight and (shaded) basecoat = clearer details.

I would strong suggest painted the face much brighter/paler, perhaps an all-over brighter skin tone followed by a recess wash applied on the wrinkled part of the ear, over the eyes, and where the helmet meets the skin

The face is the focal point so a nice-looking face can actually help counteract meh looking clothes/armor

As for the rest, try to do edge-highlighting (if you don't know what that is, watch Duncan/Warhammer TV videos until you do) in a much brighter colour for the red, green, and bronze (if you want a dark red or burgundy, you can still highlight, just do it with more of a pinkish color rather than a blood red)

You might also make the belt buckle(? round thing over midriff) bronze/gold, and that semicircular recess on the chest in bronze/gold as well, maybe even do his crest in gold or red. This will help break up the green so it looks like blobby, and having more gold will make it look like a part of the color-scheme rather than an after thought.

Pic related is MS paint colours, but your want your edge highlights to be about that bright so they provide a good contrast. If you can do a recess shade in black where I drew the black lines, that would further make different components of the figure (face, cloth, armour, etc.) look more distinct. It's a relatively easy way to make detail stick out more, especially on poorly-sculpted or "soft-detail" miniatures

thin paints considerably when attempting an edge highlight.
>>
>>50397588

If you feel like my advice is too advanced for you, or it's more work than a rank-and-file trooper warrants, then I would suggest at a bare minimum consider adding the extra bronze areas, definitely try to put more effort into the flesh, and try to just do a green highlight on the easiest areas (outline of the shield, top of the crest/shoulder pads, etc.)

If you have a detail brush, then at least a moderate amount of recess-shading shouldnt be too hard to do as long as you fully grasp the concept, and there's enough texture on the spear shaft that you could probably get away with lightly drybrushing it with a pinkish color (imo it's very easy to make drybrushing look shitty but that kind of textured surface usually takes to it well)
