Sup nerds, I have a question about numbers and how they work.
When I was a kid people were like "a jillion isn't a number" but if numbers are infinite, wouldn't everything eventually be a number?
>>8160255
is "banana" a number? you seem to think it is.
>>8160255
there aren't infinitely many numbers.
there are only as many numbers as those we need.
>>8160255
>numbers are infinite
What's time?
>>8160137
time for you to get a watch

Maybe it is simply the representation of the manner in which our consciousness is simply a continuation of memory.Maybe it is simply the distance to decay or death. Maybe it is a dimension of space which we can not comprehend. I don't actually know either but i'm throwing some ideas out there.

What are your thoughts on global warming?
The scientific evidence indicates that global warming is real, undesirable and is caused by human activity, but since I'm posting on a neo-Nazi website for low-functioning teenagers I'm obligated to say that it's a conspiracy by the Chinese to destroy the white race.
All the thoughts have bled from me and I can think no more.
Now it's climate change and not global warming, you silly
Here's a truth for you /sci/
We need a relatively equal amount of idiots and geniuses in this world to be a good civilization. Idiots supply the creativity and imagination while geniuses provide the logic and the capabilities. They mesh together like gears. Would you find that to be agreeable?
>>8159993
You're correct in that societies would probably fail if their populations were disproportionately creative/scientific. But it's pretty silly to call these different sections "idiots" and "geniuses", a top-tier scientist with no appreciation for culture is as close to being an idiot as a top-tier creative who hasn't had a scientific thought in his life.
Besides, no such society could ever exist anyway, very few people are solely creatively minded or scientifically minded.
>>8159993
why do you assume that those aren't the same people?
Being a genius does not have a direct correlation with achievement, neither does drive it seems. A friend I have had since high school, his iq was around 170, physics degree from an ivy league...he is just some code monkey at google. I have never seen anyone with the dedication he had, I wish I knew what happened.
So guys, I've been busy brainstorming over the past few weeks and have come up with a rough idea and design of a plasma bullet that could be fired by a coil/rail rifle. I know this thread may belong on /k/ but I believe you guys in /sci/ will be of better help. My bullet is basically a hollow copper bullet filled with gas so that the gas ionizes when it passes through the magnetic currents of the coils or rail. The copper jacket on the tip of the bullet is left open to expose some of the lead inside. there will be lead inside the bullet to add some mass and to ensure that it expands on impact. The plasma part of the bullet is that after the bullet expands in the body after penetration the ionized gas inside will escape and burn the surrounding tissue. I'm thinking of making this a 10mm round. As this is still a rough idea I need some theoretical and practical help to make it possible. I'll upload some of my sketches soon.

>inb4 a tirade
>>8159706
A plasma would have very low internal pressure. Assuming you could deliver a plasma-filled bullet to target without breaking it open, the high velocity would defeat the purpose of using a plasma. It wouldn't burn due to its internal forces but more due to impact pressure.
>>8159706
Plasma weapons are a meme. A puff of hot gas ain't got any stoppin powah.
There are also problems with plasma weapons:
http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacegunexotic.php#id--Plasma_Weapons
That being said check out the plasmak a method for making ball lightning in the lab. It doesn't have much stoppin powah, but it does cause an EMP when the plasma ball hits something
How does the U.S. fair against Europe in science?
>>8159649
They all moved here in the 1930's because Europe sucked so bad. We win.
>>8159649
Today ? Depends on what fields.
However, it's very encouraged and prestigious to have research experience in the USA. At least in France.
From what I've seen people come to us, do a project or two then go back and use fact they worked in us to propel their career forward.
I don't get why people send satellites into space. Why should we waste billions of dollars when we could have spent it on making iphones, helping the billions of starving innocent people in Africa, or flying victims of wartorn countries like Syria to safe spaces where we can free them of oppression, or even just making the internet gooder. Billions of dollars have been wasted because some dumb scientist thought "lol lets send a chunk of metal around the earth" and they wonder why ppl don't agree haha
They didn't spend it on "making iphones, helping the billions of starving innocent people in Africa, or flying victims of wartorn countries like Syria to safe spaces where we can free them of oppression, or even just making the internet gooder..." because the people who own/control the money didn't want to.
Also as I see it, country A needs to be able to defend itself from country B, and country B needs to protect itself from country C, etc... Therefore pushing technology and having advancing leaps forward will give nations the better ability of winning fights.
>>8159644
thats pretty bigoted, think of all the lives we could save instead of wasting it on throwing chunks of metal into space and better ways to kill each other
we should be working on peace not war :)
We say the cell is the smallest living thing, but red blood cells are cells without DNA or any organelle.
Are they considered alive ? What do you think ?
>>8159442
Why does it matter? Define life however you want and you have your answer. Doesn't change anything about red blood cells or anything else though.
do RBCs respire?
>>8159450
No. It's all anaerobic.
So I live in the US, and it is pretty standard for everyone to have a Texas Instruments calculator for Algebra onward.
Are TI calculators popular in other countries?
Not where I'm from. We aren't even allowed to have these on most exams.
>>8159429
Are they expensive in other countries? It seems like they'd be even more expensive.
>>8159444
Yeah, they are. They're also pretty fucking useless because everyone owns a computer. The only reason they make them is probably so that americans can use them on exams.
Why are fields like Psychology, Social Science, Economics not considered to be "real" sciences - like the "hard" sciences Physics, Biology, Chemistry?
They are systems of thought where you can come up with hypotheses, devise experiments, make observations from those experiments that support or refute your hypotheses. So, why aren't they real science? Is it because the experiments are based on complex behavior of people? Physics/Biology experiments are also based on behavior of complex systems?
Not trolling, really want to know.
They don't undergo the same rigorous standards. Particularly Sociology and shit like that. One big Leftist circlejerk.
>>8159269
what standards? they publish their research in peer reviewed journals, just like the hard sciences
>They are systems of thought where you can come up with hypotheses, devise experiments, make observations from those experiments that support or refute your hypotheses. Little to no experiments are done in these fields except maybe psychology.
Hi, /sci/.
I am woman, and my haemoglobine is critically low (80 grams per liter) .
What are some medicines/supplements/foods that can raise its concentration?
Thanks in advance.
age ?

46.
Actually, I'm not a woman. I'm a guy.
Just asing for my mom.

No. Electron theory and electromagnetic waves are a fraud.

Is there any aerodynamic advantage in running like Naruto?
>>8158588
Apparently a very slight one, but you lose all the efficiency of swinging your arms so end up way behind
>>8158591
This, the counterbalancing your arms perform as you walk or run allows you to walk/run faster/more efficiently.
>>8158588
Arguably yes, however the speed needed to notice should be faster then any person could reasonably ever run.
There are a few things that are argued, key word argued as just because the principles makes sense does not mean it matters given the values needed.
1. smaller frontal cross section, lower drag
2. slopped interface allows air to slid off rather then bouncing, lower drag
3. slopped interface deflects some air down as lifting force effectively lower the vertical force needed to move, thus more leg energy can be used for horizontal motion
It all about the values, after all I make arcs of plasma with my silk cloths, this doesn't mean I can use my silk suit to melt down bank vault doors.
Are black holes the densest object you can get? Are there varying densities of black holes? Does the original matter the black hole had help determine how dense it can get?
>>8158551
I think this thread proves that no, a black hole is not the densest something can get.

if aliens saw him, they'd deem humans too primitive and move on to another planet

Is 50h/week too much studying?
>>8158244
If you're getting good grades then no. If you have the opportunity to just study, then treat it as a full-time job.
Some people take 2 hours to learn something, some take 10. In the end, it doesn't matter, as long as you know it.
>>8158244
If you're an undergrad yes, you are probably slow compared to your peers. If you're postgrad it depends on how many fields you're trying to master at once.
>>8158244
Nigga I study 5 hours a week.
Why the fuck are you so stupid that you need 50 hours of it and why the fuck do you even have 50 hours of free time to study?
Some people man, some fucking people..
