T-lymfocyttar er celler som i motsetnad til B-lymfocyttane, ikkje går til åtak på bakteriar. Dei har som hovudoppgåve å bekjempe virus og kreftceller. Alle virusinfiserte celler har til liks med bakteriar ein spesifikk overflate (makromolekyl) som immunsystemet kan kjenne att. T-åtaksceller går så til åtak på dei virusinfiserte cellene. Når ein T-lymfocytt kjenner att overflata på eit virus eller ei kreftcelle byrjar cella å dele seg. Sidan denne prosessen går seint, tek det fleire dagar for det er nok lymfocyttar i blodet til å slå attende infeksjonen.
