The results indicated a three-point bump in support as compared to the 2016 findings. It also marked a significant rise from the 64% who supported the measure in 2015. In 2009, only a slim majority of Jewish Israelis said “yes” to the question on a Hiddush-commissioned poll.

In Israel, though same-sex marriage is not technically illegal, there is no institution authorized to carry it out. In a system inherited from Ottoman times, people can only marry in Israel through their religious institutions: Jewish couples must marry through the Chief Rabbinate, which refuses to carry out same sex marriages, and Christians, Druze and Muslims all marry through their own state-sanctioned and publicly funded religious legal systems.

When divided by political party affiliation, 84% of Likud voters indicated support for either gay marriage or civil unions for same-sex couples.

Grandparents, great-grandparents and even first cousins in Idaho can seek custody, guardianship or visitation rights to children in certain circumstances, but an unmarried same-sex partner cannot. But they can legally adopt if the other parent agrees.

Several states, including New Mexico, Washington and Nevada, allow women or men who consent to another woman's insemination to be legally considered the child's parent, even if the couple is not married, according to the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

But a few states, including Idaho, are far more restrictive. Utah, for instance, prohibits anyone who lives with an unmarried partner, same-sex or not, from adopting.

In the Idaho ruling Wednesday, the high court decided unanimously that the woman identified only as Jane Doe has no parental rights to the 7-year-old child because her former partner is the one who was artificially inseminated and carried the baby and because the two women were not married.

A magistrate court dismissed her claim to be legally considered a parent under Idaho's artificial insemination laws, which state that an opposite-sex couple who has a child through that method can sign a form to establish legal paternity, but same-sex couples must go through adoption procedures.

Both sides appealed, and the Idaho Supreme Court agreed that the former partner had no parental rights. It also terminated her visitation rights.

"Mother made the decision to terminate the relationship between child and partner. She had that right, and while there may be a temptation to second-guess that decision, courts cannot do so," Idaho Supreme Court Justice Robyn Brody wrote for the court.

‘Gay panic’ is still a partial legal defence to violence in many US states, although the state of Illinois recently outlawed its use.

The defence means that assailants who attack gay men after seeing homosexual behaviour may argue in court that they could not reasonably control their actions.

It relies on a largely discredited medical idea that many men will have a natural, biological response of rage when witnessing gay behaviour, which will make their actions uncontrollable.

Now, a study published in the Psychology and Sexuality journal shows the theory to be false.

The study showed a series of images – several of which included men having sex – to 120 men, and tested their saliva before and after for alpha-amylase, a chemical that is produced in saliva when a person is stressed.

The study showed that the level of alpha-amylase was the same for those participants who were shown to be tolerant of gay relationships and those who were not.

The study, written by Breanna O’Handley and Karen Blair, concluded that there is “no empirical evidence” to support the gay panic defence.

Last week, the Illinois state legislature decided that ‘gay panic’ and ‘trans panic’ are no longer legitimate legal defences, following in the wake of California – the only other US state to ban the defence.
