Seemingly only dedicated fly anon (just gonna start calling myself utah fly anon now for those of you who give a shit now that im seeing more fly fishing posts) back at it again with some more Rainbows (pic related). Was fucking around with some wooly buggers which worked surprisingly well.

After this winter, I'll see if I can compile what I've learned to help you with that pastebin on trout, rivers, and fly fishing, but my knowledge is extremely limited. Learning very quick now though.

Finally got enough money for some waders just in time for some winter fly fishing. Tested them out this last weekend. Boots seem a little large, but once I start wearing wool socks with my waders, theyll probably fit comfortably.

I used to when I lived in Berkeley. Fished for striper, halibut, bat ray, smelt. I've made some trips to the coast for rockfish and lings as well. I prefer saltwater, it seems like the ocean is teeming with life and I can always catch something even if I have to downsize and go after smaller fish. Can't wait to catch some smelt on the UL rod someday.

Hopefully this isn't too stupid of a question but why can I never get any "big" fish to bite? I've been casually fishing for about a month now and have caught a good bit of fish but nothing that's really like "holy shit, this is a fucking fight".

For example, I went pier fishing a few nights ago and was catching enough white trout to feed an entire African village but they were stupidly small. It was fun but there wasn't even a fight. Would feel a nibble, set the hook, and that's all she wrote. Do I have to be using livebait or bigger bait/hooks in order to catch the big ones?
>>
Well, looks like my motorbike will sell for around 3500 to 4500 AUD. Gotta pay off my ute (2k owing). Time to buy a boat.

For river fishing, is there any practical reason why a cheap speed boat would not make a good fishing vessel?

Mostly just going to be fishing largish rivers (edward mostly, an anabranch of the Murray) so size isn't too much of an issue, and it'd be nice to have the option of some skiing fun for the niece and nephews
>>
>>894681
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but
From what I can tell, it's a combination of timing, bait/lure, and luck. From a fly fishing perspective, the first thing you want to do is simulate what the big fish eats. It may eat what the smaller or normal sized fish eat, but now that it's larger, it probaby also moved on to bigger and better things. For example, I learned some trout get big enough to where they start eating small rodents. So once you've got that down, you got to figure out when they eat. Again, from a fly fishing perspective I heard the biggest fish are nocturnal and feed at around 2-4 AM, a time where most fish aren't getting caught, and as the old saying goes, the biggest fish get that way by not getting caught.
So combining those two things, and combine that with some luck, and you'll be getting the bigger fish.
One last thing, I imagine, you have to learn how to think and be like the fish, as dumb and cliche as that sounds. I'm sure the best fishermen become so good because they've learned so much about the fish themselves.
>>
>>894681
Big fish are more sensitive to electricity. You're probably scaring them away.

If you don't care what you get do the following
>buy a daiwa beefstick And daiwa opus 5000 gr8
>#20 suffix superior high via
>#50 mini
#3 single strand wire (43 pound test)
>7/0 octopus circle hooks
>4-6 oz pyramid sinkers
>plastic beads
Okay spool your reel with the #20 mono and then put on 30 feet of #50 mono with an Albright knot or improved blood knot
Take half your hooks and Snell them on #50 mono then use a Palomar to tie the swivel
Then the others use the wire and haywire twist up the hooks and swivels
Both rigs should be 5-7 inches long each
Tie up a fish finder rig with them and hook a piece of cut bait or live fish on there
For fishing just cast as far as you can and flip on the bait runner- it should be just right enough to keep the line tight and lean it on the railing
Keep it low, and rest it in an eyeguide or the line will run on the pier and weaken it
I like to.use the third guide because it's high up enough to not let the rod go in the water but not stick out enough to piss anyone off
Till get drums, days, sharks, and plenty more on the east coast
Just check it every 15 minutes or so.and make sure crabs don't eat your bait
>>894705
But don't forget elephants eat peanuts
Sometimes big fish want small baits

But I'm planning to start fishing tournaments, I wanna go to the coast a few times, and there's a couple river trips on the yak I wanna do. I just think it'd be cooler to post a video on here than just a picture of the fish I catch.

>>894989
Kek nah. I mean yeah I'll say which lures I like but I'm not gonna pretend like you absolutely need that specific lure to catch fish. The only time I would do that is if I somehow got a really good sponsor and even then I'd try and keep it to a minimum.

We weren't really fishing that day, but it did get really really thick towards the back of that creek. If I was dead set on fishing it id probably use a heavy jig, or a soft plastic with a heavy weight.

Here's a run down of today.

Eyeballed a trout roaming around flats of a lake. He ran after my spinner a few times but never bit.

Spend the next 4 hours running spinner across the coast.

Greet some other fishermen that all got skunked too.

See dead bird on the way back; ate too much lead sinkers I bet.

Park closes early and gate me out. Luckily the lock on the exit gate was loose and I snuck out without having to call the park administration to let my sorry ass out.

Always thought they left the exit gate open. But won't complain since I bet they intentionally left the gates lock loose.

Fishing is fun and all but I don't catch anything.

Too busy talking politics on the normiebook to explain everything that is wrong here.

With it rigged like that, you might as well just swim the thing instead of a typical worm presentation on the bottom. But now that water is cooling off, you might do better with something replicating a baitfish and moving around a lot until you find the fish.
>>
>>895194
>>895196
Am I supposed to use swimbaits instead of worms for jig heads? I always thought the jig is used to keep it on the bottom and bounce it; and the worm is useful jumping around and with a raised tail when sitting. Did so when I had it out there.

But it did fall down fast. I'm guessing the worm is supposed to fall slowly- meaning no weight.

If you're bouncing them along the bottom, it's a good idea to Texas rig them or get some shakey head jigs like pic related. A lot of the shakey head jigs will make the tail of the worm stand up when it is on the bottom and they do a good job enticing bass. Also the Texas rig or shakey head will be weedless unlike a regular jighead.

I still use regular jigheads with curly tail grubs and shit sometimes tho. Just bounce those around and everything will bite them.

And remember a lot of times lighter weight is actually better with that stuff because the bait will fall slower and look more natural.
>>
>>895225
>frogposting
But I feel ya on that
>>
>>895348
Oh OK, so I have the right idea. I wasnt getting much weeds anyways until I hit some flats. I'll try picking up the jig heads that can go weedless. In the meantime what are these good for? Swimbaits that just stay at a lower depth than an unweighted hook?

Also I heard those dressed jig heads with a weed guard are good. I could probably hook a worm on there too right?

Jigheads still have their purpose. Some swimbaits (although stuff like Zoom Super Flukes are made to be used with swimbait hooks and weedless) or curly tail grubs, those Gulp minnows, etc. But jigheads aren't the best for slowly running worms along the bottom.

If you are going to pick up something new to rig soft baits, I reccommend bullet weights (3/16 or 1/4oz) and then some EWG offset worm hooks so you can Texas rig the stuff.

Check out the imgur in the OP. There are lots of pics in there that show different ways to rig soft baits.

A shows how a lot of the half moon shakey head jigs are made. C is kinda like these worm hooks I bought before that end up working just like a Texas rig without having to add the bullet weight.

G and H show the weighted swimbait hooks. Baits like the Zoom Super Flukes and KVD Caffeine Shads have little grooves in them and the hooks sit in those so they are weightless. Then there are a bunch of other presentations with jigheads and underspins but most of those are for panfish. Normally with larger bass baits you can use some sort of offset hook to keep them weedless. It's hard to do that for panfish though because they don't inhale the whole bait like bass do.

Running baits like that for bass takes some practice too. You gotta get the presentation right as well as feeling the bites and knowint when to set the hook. If you try and set it as soon as you feel the nibble, you will just rip the bait out of the fish's mouth.
>>
>>895364
Mmk, and that rig with the bullet sinker still keeps the worm tail dangling up. I saw some jig heads that have that offset just like that too and I guess they work too. The Bullet weight is a bit more weedless if I guess correctly since the eyelet of jigs typically get caught in weeds.
>>
>>895383
If you get those offset jigheads, they are bretty gud getting through the weeds. But there is a slightly different action while fishing them. I think I prefer the typical Texas rig with bullet weights since they allow the bait a little more movement in a lot of conditions. Plus it is easier to match the right hook to the right weight.

Guy running a tackle shop suggested these and I didnt put much use to them yet.

Does the bait imitate salmon eggs or is it just another meal stocked-fish learned to like?

Don't use those or any power baits unless you plan on keeping trout to eat. 90% of the time you gut hook with those baits.

What's a good rod/reel combo under $100 for bass/trout fishing in small ponds and lakes?

And is there any YouTube videos on different lures and how to use them?

I'm tired of waiting on driving 3 hours every weekend to catch some catfish. Just want something cheap to fish some trout/bass in local lakes in the evenings.

That might be sterling silver.

Many fisherman including myself wear Saint Andrew and Saint Peter as they are patrons of fishermen and they were themselves fishermen before being "called" to christ.

I don't believe in catholicism but the medallion charm is cool and I wear them because I'm superstitious about fishing because I'm retarded.

Saint Anthony is also considered a patron of fishermen amongst many other things.

Whoever had that charm would want you to wear it and go fishing with it.

If you want something big, go for carp.

>>895519
Jerkbaits are one of the easiest baits to fish. Steady retrieve with little twitches. If fish are being picku, you can go real fast and try to get a reaction strike or leave it for longer pauses with small twitches and sometimes they will strike on the twitch.

Well nice to know im not the shittiest angler here.

First of all with worms, nightcrawlers really, you shouldnt be using a giant hook. The hook shouldnt be so thick that it's ripping the worm in half.

I doubt thats the problem tho.

Hold the worm and stab the hook where you're holding it, like if you're holding it between ur thumb and finger hook it there, not somewhere on the end.

also hook a worm a few times rather than just once.

Hope that helps. Worms are pretty versatile. Bring some disposable latex gloves if you dont dare to hold a worm securely.

You're not considering if the guy has the right worms or right hooks. Something average anglers might overlook in newbs. For what I know he might have dug up his own which are too small to hook for someone totally new.

Nah lookup an image of a rigged nightcrawler. Also I'd suggest buying a pack of them (Walmart carries them I think if you don't have any local bait shops) (some outdoor chains like dicks too maybe?) Pretty cheap and they're all in a container and good sized.

YouTube had a lot of basic stuff like this btw if you're not getting the idea
>>
>>895519
Point the rod tip down and diagonal and tug.

Also, make sure the front hook isn't caught on the line before each cast which it will do a lot for hard jerk bait.

Of course, it's not possible to fish hard floating jerkbait when you are on a too high spot like a high pier

How big is your Bass Pro? We have a fucking huge store here. 2 stories, has probably 95% of what you can see online in the store. Takes like 5 minutes to walk from one end to another. Has a couple fast food joints. Spending a day in Bass Pro is probably what a woman feels like when she spends a day in the mall.

A friend took me bass fishing yesterday evening. First time freshwater fishing since I was a little kid and my step dad took me trout fishing all the time. Can somebody tell me why bass is popular to fish? It doesn't take much skill to find them. They don't put up a fun fight. They aren't really that tasty to eat compared to other fish. Is it just because they're a game fish and was shilled on ESPN back when fishing was popular? Is it because they're literally everywhere like weeds?

At least sea bass puts up a decent fight. But I was bored out my mind. Just casting and retrieving until you catch a fish that doesn't even fight. I've caught logs that were more fun to reel in.

This is why I shill saltwater fishing so much. People like Pepsi are really missing out on catching some really fun fish. Freshwater fish either do a few hops and let you reel them in or feel like pulling in a log. There is no freshwater equivilant for jacks, blues, kingfish, tarpon or snook. You can watch videos of 1rod1reel fishing for jacks with blacktiph (old video) he was absolutely shocked when he got his first jack just like I'm sure Pepsi would be if he stopped being so stubborn.
>>
>>896183
There's a lot of big fun fish to catch in freshwater, but not in little golf course ponds or stocked lakes that 99% of people in this thread fish for little bass and trout. Up north we got big bodies of water for Northern Pike, Musky, big Flathead catfish, and King Salmon.

As for saltwater, I personally prefer inland fishing. Flounder, blues, and stingrays are fun. My Uncle likes grouper and dogfish but not really a fan.
>>
>>896096
My cabelas is like that (not quite as big). I was actually underwhelmed by the bass pro here.

>>896149
The Z-Man ones come with a skittle trailer and they work alright. I would suggest a super fluke jr though. I tried a regular super fluke and it has good action and I really like the profile, but if you try and burn it through the water itll stay right on top of the water column, where the super fluke jr. Stays where you let it sink to before your retrieve.

Have someone thought of making a guide for worm farms for the pastebin? Wormguy maybe? Or is there an approved youtube guide?
>>
>>896198
There's already like a thousand YouTube videos on how to catch worms. If you mean actually raising your own worms, there's lots of online guides for vermiculture as well.
>>
>>896230
I mean raising my own worms, yes. I always have a few left after fishing and it's a shame to throw those away, also I dont want to dig new holes in my garden every time I go fishing. ( I know about the soap trick and what not)
What im interested in particularly is growing some fatty worms that wont break in half from being hooked and then fall off in the cast, or die within minutes.
But at the same time I dont want a giant crate of worms, just a smaller box that can supply me with bait and restock itself.

By the way, >>896248 is basically what I used to do, but I'll cut a piece of rug to put over it and I always keep it wet to let it drip down. Typically drill some holes on the bottom of one end and keep it slanted on the opposite end so it drains well. I'll also put some chicken feed on the top of the soil for them to feed on and get real fat.

>>896249
Will a newspaper work instead of a rug do you think, or will the worms go to work on it?
>>

>>
>>896290

Ok.

>>896335
Shit, I could type one up for bass and put it in the pastebin but it's always hit or miss. Generally with hot water in the summer, the bass will go deep and you want to run slow shit on the bottom. Sometimes a big crawdad works but if they are really picky it's worth trying a small plastic worm on a Texas rig. Cooler water and you can run jerkbaits and swimbaits and shit. When they are really feeding, spinnerbaits do a good job drawing them in. Normally it's just trying to match your bait to whatever they are feeding on.

And idk about trout, but for bass when they are feeding you just want to follow the food. The baitfish and shit will hang out in protected areas like weed beds or shallow water. So bass will often be just on the deeper end of these spots.
>>

I need some help. I've got about $2k AUD to spend on a boat or a kayak + a bunch of other gear.

90% will be solo fishing, in a medium sized river. Maybe a little lake action 5-6 times a year.

Boat sounds nice and comfy. BUt with 2k, it'll be just a boat. Without some added luxuries like a fish/depth finder, some nice new rods and a few other essentials.

Kayak seems cheaper and probably more sensible. But I've never fished out of one. But the idea of being able to chuck it in the ute and bugger off after work down at the river without nearly as much hassle seems ideal. And I'd also be able to fit it with a nice fish finder and all the bells and whistles for well under $2k.

Is kayak fishing a real pain in the ass? Can those little electric motors help cruise you along upstream, or they really only useful for trolling?
>>
>>896543
>Is kayak fishing a real pain in the ass?
Not at all

>Can those little electric motors help cruise you along upstream, or they really only useful for trolling?
You can use them to cruise along at a pretty good clip
Also get one where you can enter GPS coordinates and set it to keep you at that exact spot
>>
>>896584
sweet. I'm pretty much sold. Mostly the idea of throwing the kayak on the ute in the morning before work.

I'll be happy if I can get close to 10km/h whilst using a motor and paddling. I could always put a little 3 hp motor on it if needed.
>>
>>896590
Yeah that's a big plus as opposed to having to purchase a trailer and deal with having to find boat ramps to launch from
Also think of the money you'll save on gas, registration fees, maintenance, etc

Get a nice electric motor and a couple deep-cycle batteries and you've got a great 'yak setup
>>
>>896614
Yep. Sounds great. Just gotta find a yak that's got a decent weight capacity. I'm 90kg, so once you add in tackle, batteries and gear. I'm not liking the idea of floating around in a yak rated to 140kg with like 130kg in it.

Might look at a canoe, but my utes pretty high and 50kg of oddly shaped weight might be a bit too much to handle solo.

25% off? That's pretty good. I got 15% off at Petsmart and then like twice a year they would have a couple days of 30% off.

We just went to Dick's, not too many great sales. But they still had some ok stuff on clearance. I was about to setup a new Memecaster. St. Croix Triumph for $69 off of $99 and then they had a few different Abus and a cheaper Daiwa for $10-$30 off.

...and our morning of fishing was typical Pepsi. Checked out some new lakes. I got a tiny guy. Then had a nice 3 or 3.5lb bass thay jumped off right before I could land him. Then dude snagged one of my Mepps on a gator. Then he got a little maybe 12" bass.

These lakes seem promising tho but probably bad timing this morning. I will def go back over there.

Checked.

That's my plan. I kinda want to go back to the same lake I was at but might stay closer. The lake (and those nearby) look really promising and aside from the one big bass that jumped off the hook we didn't get anything worthwhile.

But 95% of the time I go fishing early in the AM, it ends up being shitty. Not sure why people love getting out at sunrise. Dusk is easily the best time to fish the freshwater around here. Like an hour or two before sunset to half an hour after it gets totally dark.

Where do I go to find out information on what weather, time of day, barometric pressure, etc, etc, is ideal for fishing? It's 5:17am, should be a nice day if a little hot later on.

Kind of wondering if I need to be getting up this early, or if i'm even leaving it too late. Fish when its dark, or just starting to lighten up?

check out tides for fishing. It's more for salt but should have your local pressure and solunar readings. Fresh wil be affected by both of those + regular daylight feeding habits.

Cheers dude. I'm still yet to catch a fish with about 20 hours on the water over the last month or so. Time to get serious about this shit.

Or let the fish recover. Between the floods, back water and weird weather patterns (temperature's been quite backwards for this time of year) no ones having much luck, Seen a few dead Murray Cod, big fuckers too. like 70cm's.

Well, decent sized. Apparently the world record is 183 cm, 113 Kg (6 ft, 250 lbs). I'd be happy with a 20cm one tho.

Hell yeah that's the best time of year like I was tellin you. Those are the days where you can go out at noon and still be hitting largemouth up and down.

Still have no fucking clue on Mayans aside from seeing them in their little nesting holes in the early to mid summer. Snakeheads supposedly breed just before summer and sometimes again at the end of summer or early fall. But I have hit sneks all the time, and caught lots earlier in the afternoon as well as at dusk and even after it got dark. And the peacocks must have bred a month or two ago. All so confusing.

Pic related is a snek caught a little after sunset.

What do you guys use to carry tackle around?

Thinking of buying a bushcraft day pack with MOLLE straps. Get some small plastic lure boxes and keep everything in a bag instead of carrying a big plastic tackle box around. Use the MOLLE to slide my rod holders through when shore fishing and could easily carry a camping chair tied to it. Will probably end up going to a milsurp store and finding a small bag since I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Anybody else do this? Tired of having my hands full carrying rods in one hand and tackle in the other, or tugging a big cooler on wheels around. Figured a back pack would be better to free up a hand.

Fuck yes. After 20+ hours and a few weeks work, I finally got my first bite.

Move to a new fishing spot, and it's got a lot of crap under the water. So I'm tying on a surface lure, and out of the corner of my eye I see a big fish. Thinking it's dead, i stop and have a look. And it moves away. Quickly finish the knot, and cast in. First cast nothing, second nothing. Third, i'm not expecting it. BOOOSHHH. Jumps the lure fucking hard about 5m away from me. Quick little fight, adjust the drag. He jumps about and gets off the hook. Bloods rushing like nothing else. Quickly cast in a few more times and nothing. About 20m's to the side I see him take something off the top of the water. So I walk around some bushes and through a little bit of run off from the flooded dips that are everywhere. Few more casts and bang. The biggest explosion on top of the water. Seriously looked like a shark on youtube. Unfortunately he didn't get hooked. After that no luck.

But before I had fun just going for a walk and spending time outdoors. Now that's ruined. Completely. All I want to do is catch a fish.

Gonna go out this arvo when it cools down a bit. Was starting to work up a sweat by 730 so i buggered off at 8.

Think it's worth hitting the same spot, or moving somewhere else? Gotta hike like 3km's to get there as the roads are closed due to all the water. Might take the pushy. It's mostly dry now and easy enogh to carry a 9kg bike through any mud.

Anybody found good rods or reels at garage sales/flea markets? Trying to get into fishing on a budget.
>>
>>896897

walmart is your friend, you can find dirt cheap setups that will suit you until you decide if you want to invest more in the hobby.
>>
>>896899
I'm not looking to spend $25 for a $25 setup. Looking to spend $25 for a $50 setup used.
>>
>>896900

then good luck, beware that pawn shops will usually only buy/pawn high end gear so you'd pay $300 for a $500 setup.
>>
>>896897
That's how I bought my first setup at the beginning of the year. I now own 3 combos but the other 2 I bought new.

Found a Ambassadeur for sale at a flea market for $50. They were $80 retail but I told the lady I could buy it new for $60 (probably can on Amazon). She sold it to me for $35.

And I got an Ugly Stik GX2 rod for $15 at a garage sale. They're only like $40 retail but they're great rods.

Can buy good stuff for cheap. I wouldn't buy old string or lures though. They aren't expensive new anyways. I catch catfish and carp. You can find other setups as well. Just buy newspapers and bulletin boards and find yard sales with fishing stuff in the description. Can also go to flea markets, and some community antique shops where anybody can rent a booth, they typically sell garage sale tier stuff instead of actual antiques and you can find some fishing gear. Or just check your local Craigslist. Even try eBay.
>>
>>896906
I hardly ever see fishing or /out/ gear in pawn shops around here besides guns, even though I live in Virginia. Mostly just old electronics and music equipment.
>>
>>896908
That's because the only thing pawn shops get are nigger gear or some white guy crying and selling a gun for 10% of its value because he's about to get evicted.
>>
>>896897
>>896900
Bruh, just wait for clearance deals at major retailers. Craigslist or local fishing shows/conventions may work too. But seriously around this time of year keep your eye out at major retailers. I was looking at a bunch of clearance stuff at Dick's today for like 30% off. It is the time of year where models are getting discontinued for the 2017 stuff.

I don't think I have ever seen fishing tackle at a flea market. You can find steals at garage sales but a lot of it is old and neglected shit. And pawn shops are retarded. At least around here, it seems like the pawn shops either have really high end saltwater stuff or complete trash K Mart stuff, and they ask 90% of retail pricing for it.

Kek. Retarded immigrants.

>>896816
So many people say topwater, but probably 90% of mine have been on inline spinners like Mepps or Rooster Tails. They will take soft plastics too but they don't inhale lures like bass so it is more difficult to get a hook set.

They are ambush predators. They love to hang out in weed beds or grass with calm water but you have to be quiet so you don't spook them. They also love trees and bushes growing right on the shore and hanging over the water. I seek to find a lot of them in areas with random underwater grassy patches, I just run a Mepps at a medium-high speed over the grass and they will jump out and strike. But if you don't hook them on the first strike, just move on to the next one because it is so damn hard to get them to strike again. I had this Mepps Agila #4 with a pink blade and brown skirt, I have caught a few ~27" sneks on it, tons of medium ones, and a bunch of bass and this guy >>896819 somehow got it snagged on a big alligator this morning. I told him to land the gator but it didn't work out so well since the thing was probably close to 6'.

And I just leave the sneks on the bank. I try and throw them in the bushes so people don't have to see them. The birds, raccoons, and cats take care of them before you know it. This is Florida so even if the bigger animals don't get em, the ants and bugs will carry the fuckers away.

The drop shot rig is all about finding suspended fish. If they are 2' off the bottom, you want your bait to be about 2' off the bottom. And there are so many different rigs depending how you are fishing. 3-way rigs, river rigs, drop shots, dropper loop rigs, etc are all similar for specific conditions. My advice is following other anglers in your area who are having success.

Figuring out the right time, the right spot, the right bait, and the right presentation all factor into how much you catch but you def need a lil luck on your side too.

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on financing a new pontoon boat. It's a brand new 20' Fishing Barge from Sun Tracker with a 60hp outboard. It's slow but it's more room than my current 12' jon boat with 15hp.

Plan on rigging it up for catfish and carp in the big rivers and keep my jon boat for bass in lakes.

It's gonna cost me about $240 a month though in payments for the next 10 years. Not really a burden but still, that's $240. Not to mention the extra cost of getting it ready for fishing. Fish finder, rod holders, lights, etc.

Should I do it? I love catfishing but taking my 12' jon boat out on the James/Potomac River can be scary at times.
>>
>>896820
I use a plano guide series 3600 with a few of the boxes changed out for more specialised ones. Love it, just small enough to be comfortable to bank fish and big enough to hold all my tackle and tools.

>>897156
>Making payments for 10 years

What the fuck
>>
>>897162
Boat loans are typically 10 years yes. My Grandparents was 15 but they paid it off early.
>>
>>897156
In my experience fishing from pontoon boats kind of sucks. They catch wind really bad when your trying to stay in a certain spot and they dont turn very tight at all so its hard to get it manuevered around cover. Very spacious though for family fishing and maintnence is about as easy as it gets for a water craft.
>>
>>897166
My Grandparents and Uncle own pontoon boats and I've fished on them my entire life. I'm not inexperienced with pontoons, but big boat ownership. Pontoon boats have plenty of space and I love fishing on them. Great for overnight catfishing. If you anchor properly, you are going to stay in the same spot pretty nicely.
>>
>>897166
Yep. Pontoons are terrible and depreciation on them is comical
>>
>>897156
Just buy a cheap used boat and rig it up how you like.

>>897169
That's not the fault of pontoon boats themselves. Look at the typical owner of a bass boat versus a pontoon boat. Actual fisherman buy bass boats and take care of them. Family men buy pontoon boats to take out once or twice a year. It's impossible to find a 10 year old pontoon boat that's been well taken care of, where you can find 15-20 year old bass boats that run like new.

I personally would enjoy a pontoon boat if they could go in shallow water. I love the open space. I drift fish so don't care about them not sitting still in wind/current. What I hate about them is I'm not able to take them up small creeks off the main river to catch bait fish, or take them in shallow grass beds for bass fishing.

You can buy a solid bass boat on Craigslist for <$7,500 and rig it up for any freshwater species. Pontoons are really only worth it for family fishing, long period fishing like overnighters with their comfy couch, etc.

I don't fish enough for a big boat like that.
>>
>>897168
Different strokes i guess. Friendly advice would be to buy used. There are tons of boats out there that are bought new and dumped after a few years when the owners realize they dont really use them much after the, initial novelty wears off You can get a basically new boat for about 30 percent off sticker price if you dont mind that its a 2013 or 12 with 100 hours on the engine
>>
>>896781
I can see wanting to get out at sunrise during the summer to beat the heat but I don't mind the heat I actually prefer it but when it cools down (I know it never really does in Miami) I think morning may suck overall as it's still cold so the fish might not be as active until the sun has been up for a bit dunno really just my conjecture as I've never really been a big morning guy myself

Probably won't go out in the morning again for a while certainly not today I'll just catch up on some work then go out around 2 o'clock or so maybe 3 depending on how quickly I can get my shit done

Also I really need to find a job that doesn't involve me sitting in front of a computer fuck I need something with a little activity going on
>>
>>897173
How would I go about getting an inspection on used boats? I don't want to buy a fiberglass boat with stress cracks or an aluminium boat with rust that I couldn't see. And testing the condition of the motor.
>>
>>897175
Assuming you have a recomended mechanic from your relations ask them to inspect the engine. If they are experienced they should be able to recomend a boat inspector. Try to get the seller to pay for it as they can keep the inspection report to try and sell to somone else if it doesnt work out with you. If they dont go for that try 50 50.

Retirement/Going out of business sale yesterday at the local tackle shop. The last non-chain store that sells tackle is going kaput, however it gave me the chance to clear them out on a lot of good items at 20-50% off. All items here were purchased at a fat discount.

Fished the pier for 3 hours in the pouring rain last night. All I got for my trouble was a walleye perch, but I put my rain gear to the test (waterproof jacket and pants + gloves pictured) and stayed very dry all things considered

A bunch of companies make tackle backpacks fyi. I bought one for my little brother and it is pretty cool. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with a regular backpack and throw some flat Plano boxes inside.

I have a Plano 3700 bag that I've had for years and years. It weighs like 30lbs with all of my shit in it and digs into my shoulder when carrying it. Then I have a little lunch box packed full of soft baits that is probably 5lbs or more. I need to downsize but most of my lakes I park right by the water and just set the bags on the shore and walk around without them.

Also this. Most of my setups are around that price. But I also waste all my money on lures and Newports so I don't have $400 to drop on a new memecaster every month.

How much of a difference does fishing line make? I always buy the cheapest mono I can find.
>>
>>897229
The difference between brand or difference between mono, fluro, braid, etc.? Between, brand it doesn't make any difference in my experience. I use fluro for bass and trout. Mono for catfishing. And braid for my saltwater setups.
>>
>>897229
IDK I vastly prefer braid but I fish spinning gear no memecasting
>>
>>897229
Line is the last thing you want to cheap out on. Shitty mono is horrible, the memory will be worse and you will get more knots, it will degrade faster, and it likely won't be as strong as the same diameter line from a good brand. Spend the extra $3 and buy Trilene or Suffix or something instead of the South Bend. And change it more often than you think you need to. It will make your life so much easier.

>>897232
Cheap mono is definitely terrible. Cheap braid and flouro is also always worse in various ways compared to the good brands.
>>
>>897232
Between brand. I buy the $2 stuff instead of the $7 dollar stuff. I know the differences between mono fluoro and braid.
>>
>>897235
Do you enjoy when the line comes off the spool in coils?
>>
>>897237
Untangling line reminds me that I'm alive. I guess I'll try the more expensive stuff next time and see if it's worth it.
>>
>>897234
I buy Berkley Big Game mono for my catfish rigs and I've had no different experience buying more expensive shit like Ande Tournament despite it costing 3x as much. I buy the cheapest Offshore Angler braid I can find for my saltwater rigs. For my bass/trout meme casters, I use basic Berkley Trilene flurocarbon.
>>
>>897240
Berkley makes decent line though. Compared to stupidly high priced mono, I'm sure it doesn't make a huge difference unless you fish all day erryday. But the really cheap shit ($2 per spool?!) is so awful and unmanageable and the line will cast like 14lb Trilene but break at 6lbs.

>>897239
Also feels gud when you don't lose "the big one" because the $2 line degrades so fast in the 3mos since you spooled it. Buy Trilene or something decent and change it at the beginning of the season each year. It's the one link between the fish and you so it's worth spending the extra $3.
>>
>>897242
I fish year round at least once every week and all I've ever used is Berkley. I think I tried Spiderwire during my teens because it had a cool logo, but I'm an adult now buying my own shit and don't feel like paying that much for fishing line. I typically re-spool my line every 6 months or so.

I cheap out on most tackle. Anchors too. God I fucking hate when you spend $40 on an anchor and it gets caught up and you got to cut the rope. I've tried every type of anchor and the river I fish eats them all up. I just use cinder blocks now. Got a whole bunch on Craigslist for free. Almost a truck load. Have had them behind my shed for almost 10 years. Running low.

Only thing I'm really consumerist about are reels. I'll use cheap Ugly Stik and Berkley Cherrywood rods for almost everything besides saltwater. But I enjoy buying good reels and taking care of them.

That's like a 15 minute hike down a hillside off the highway
>>
Anyone here in the upstate NY/St. Lawrence county area? I need sone suggestions on some fishing spots. I'm willing to drive a ways, but everywhere I've gone the shore fishing has been more or less unproductive.
>>
>>897245
Berkley isn't really cheap line though. Trilene is solid mono. And if you're taking care of it and changing it out every 6mos, that's good too. And Spiderwire mono is about the same as Trilene anyway.

One day maybe you will get on some PowerPro...
>>
>>897278
Maybe I'll make a YouTube channel complaining about how I have all these $300 memecasters laying around because I have too much gear and a walk in closet full of lures. I spent $150 on this lure. I never intend on using it but it looked cool. I'm a pro fisherman guys I'm not materialistic or anything I'm a good person! subscribe and thanks. Jon B. out.
>>
>>897283
Do it pussy.

And then send me one of those $300 memecasters.

But seriously, cheaping out on line is a really bad idea. Just spend $7 on decent mono. Using cheap or old line is one of the worst decisions you can make, whether you are running it on a $20 reel or a $400 reel.

alright so i dusted off my old mans fishing gear over the summer and its been a blast. i have a ton of fishing gear, i honestly don't know what most of its for. i have many many questions so if any of you feel like answering a few of these help me out. i'm fishing in southern PA. its been unseasonably warm until today.
1 used to catch a ton of big bluegill a few feet off the bank at my closest resovoir over the summer. almost every cast i'd get a decent one. since its turned to fall they're almost completely gone. i've tried slip bobbers with night crawlers at all different depths, little panfish plastics, only thing i get now is maybe the odd 4 incher every hour or so. what am i doing wrong?
2 95 percent of the fish i've caught have been on black powrbait worms. i've had an embarrassing number of missed trikes on my popper, i think i've finally figured it out but i dont know if they still hit poppers in the fall?
3 is there like a chart somewhere of which lures go best with which season?
4 can i put braid on a spinning rod, and how do i into leaders?
5 i have a probably 5 pounds of assorted old soft plastics, is there anyway i can sent these like the powerbait worms or do i even need to?
6 the only way i seem to catch anything is weightless worm, but i'd like to have a bit more casting distance. soon as i put any kind of weight on i will not catch a fish until i take it off again. whats goin on here?
7 theres a small swampy area a lake and stream feed into, not much bigger than a basketball court, cant be more than 4 or 5 feet deep i fish at. saw a huge carp, probably 25 lbs, jump in there a few months back. tried getting him with a few cans of sweet corn and a treble hook while i was bass fishing, but no luck. i think hes stuck in there because hes too big t swim out. how do i get him without buying a bunch of carp gear?
?do i stand any chance of catching a big bass throwing a 8 inch swimbait on 14 lb line with a heavy action <6 ft rod and spinning reel?

I'll give it a shot for a couple. I have no clue on the fall fishing stuff since when I was up north I would just put my stuff away by like September or October.

>2
At least for bass fishing, topwater is normally good in the spring and fall when you can see them feeding at the surface. If you were using those tiny poppers for bluegill, they may have slowed down with surface feeding since the bugs go away when it is cold. No clue though.

>3
All depends on the water temp. Lots of fish slow down in really cold water, then get moving in 60s-70s degree water, then slow down again when it is real warm. So when they are active in the 70F water, they will feed on smaller fish and don't mind chasing stuff for a big meal. As it gets warmer or colder, smaller and slower is often the way to go. And the fish might be sitting in deeper water too since the shallow water gets colder faster in the fall than the deep water.

>4
Yes. Just don't go overkill. Lots of people see that 30lb braid is the same diameter as 8-10lb mono so they put it on their medium spinning reel that is made for 8lb mono. It's worthless since the drag won't handle it anyway. If you run 10lb, 15lb, or 20lb braid, it will still be much stronger than the 8lb mono, will last longer, won't get shitty memory loops, and it is thinner so you will cast further, can run lighter lures, and can put more line on the reel.

Leaders aren't even worth the time if you are going for panfish or bass. They aren't line shy. Flourocarbon leaders can be useful if you are fishing super clear water with really picky fish but I have never noticed a difference bass fishing.

>5
Scent doesn't matter much for bass since they hunt with vision and sound more than scent. The scent will sometimes help panfish hold on longer if you want to spray on some of the scent stuff they sell in spray bottles but I never noticed a big difference since they are visual feeders mostly.

Jigheads, Texas and Carolina rigs, drop shots, even split shots. Look at the Imgur in the OP, lots of pics in there showing how to rig soft plastics. And then learn how to fish those rigs properly.

Lighter line will also help with casting distance. Referring to the braid question, if you go from 10lb mono line to 10lb braid, you will be able to cast much further.

>7
Corn or use a treble hook and put a ball of white bread on it. Just keep a rod out there while you are casting for other stuff and they will eventually grab it.

>?
Yeah, a big bass would take it if they are hungry.

Are Daiwa Aird baitcasters good reels for lake trout and bass? What rod should I get to compliment it? Looking for a good setup under $200.
>>
>>897300
It's Daiwa so I'm sure it's fine. But I would hold off, keep an eye out for sales and clearances and you can probably pick up something much better for close to the same price.

And rods are so much preference. Check around at any Dick's around you because they have had a lot of nice Abu and some St. Croix Triumph rods on clearance for like 30% off.

And I mentioned the sales because around this time of year companies will be putting out their 2017 models and stores will clear out the old ones.

Also for that money, check out your local Bass Pro, Cabela's, or wherever and look for rod and reel combos. Bass Pro has the Johnny Morris setups that are realy nice and you get a lot for your money. The CarbonLite is $189 and the Titanium is $209 I think. Then they have the Tourney and Bionic and from everything I hear their store brand memecaster setups are a great deal.

http://m.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Johnny-Morris-CarbonLite-Baitcast-Combo/product/1408230710321/

But last year I shopped around and got my Abu Revo SX ($160) and Johnny Morris CarbonLite rod ($120) for right around $200 because of sales and waiting for the right time to buy.

Eh. I guess. Retail management normaly sucks but I guess if you were at the right clothing store you could find some young QTs.

Some store managers make good money, but shift managers normally get paid shit and are expected to do way too much for what they are paid.

I plan on moving up to supervisor where I work. Pay is 29/hour starting. They don't so much besides sitting at the computer watching product going out and materials coming in and tracking scrap and stuff. Assign trainers and new hires to trainers. Walk around every hour or so making sure people are working.
