This thread worked out well yesterday.

Previous thread:

In this thread we discuss gardening, propagating your own fruit/veg/food.

Soil, no soil, aquaculture, hydroponics, everything is good here, this thread is comfy.

post infographics, tips, discuss land prices.

Anyways, im in Texas and i never really grown anything in my life. I been trying to grow devil lettuce but can't get ANY of these seeds to germinate, im thinking that's because im using seeds from shitty mexican weed.

What would be a good, low maintenance food to grow in South Texas, and do i need to germinate fruit/veggie seeds the same way i do weed???

Paul is definitely not pronounced the same way as "peel". I have the feeling that rather than "/pol" you pronounced "peel" the wrong way all along.

I have turned 3 bathtubs into diy garden beds, filled them with some nice fertile soil and planted the following.
> strawberries
> carrots
> lettuce
> chilies
> some marigolds to keep pests away.
The lettuce was great and is still growing, I've harvested the strawberries and they were plump and juicy, the carrots got fucked up and didn't grow as well as I'd hoped and the Chiles are slow going.
The marigolds couldn't save the last harvest of strawberries though.

I'm genuinely surprised some of you have a green thumb.

as long as the pots are big enough and you have good compost, you shouldn't need to do much.
Don't overwater them as herbs don't like it.

Pests you may encounter will probably be aphids/greenfly which you can kill by mixing 1tsp olive oil 1tsp soft soap in a litre spray bottle and spraying

Hey /pol/acks who got moved together with this thread, does anyone have particular advice for gardening that is related to how to increase your chance of survival when civil war/race war strikes?

Like, is there some good things to plant that you can conserve into glass jars and build up a stock you can store in a basement or something?
>>
>>1011407
Root veggies and cabbage. If properly preserved they can last quite a while. My grandfather was in a monastery for part of his childhood and they would layer cabbage leaves with straw as well as ferment it into sour kraut.

100kg of potatoes.
>>
>>1011366
Eh, they can be a problem here too, try to plant something that can repel those insects, and on top of that you can use garlic and chili peppers( in a small amount), ground it and pour it in some water, add a bit of alcohol to disinfect that, let it alone for a couple of weeks and then spray that on your tomatoes.

As for fungine illnesses try to look for some root fungicide that you will apply to the plant before planting it.
>>
>>1011418
If potatoes are big enough you can cut them before planting them, as long as they have a couple of eyes in each seed they will sprout just fine.
>>
>>1011413
Sounds about right, I guess fermented veggies will last quite long, like sour kraut. What else can be fermented, I wonder? I would guess maybe carrot, turnip... perhaps potato?

I am also thinking about maybe growing something that can be used for making alcohol, like homemade wine or bootleg alcohol. Sounds like it would be useful to consume with the food, would kill some of the bacteria or could be put into water to kill some of the bacteria in water that could be contaminated. Also I have heard that alcohol becomes very precious trade commodity once stores/malls stop functioning, so not only it could be useful for personal consumption but also to use as a kind of currency. I am speaking about this since there was a story around on cripplechan about some serbian guy who confirmed the same from his experience during yugoslavian war.
>>
>>1011423
true dat, you can even put them in quarters if they have enough eyes.
>>
>>1011414
Does that go more into cooking territory instead of gardening then? I thought that maybe gardening advice applies since maybe some stuff is more suitable for preservation than the others.

>>1011416

My grandmother used to boil with water and a bit of winegar various vegetables and canning them, usually thing like zucchini, eggplants.

My father knows how to make grappa from old wine and grape residues, i need to learn how to make it, we sell it like 10€ on a 1,5L bottle, it's probably like the american moonshine.
>>
>>1011425
If it cant ferment well, you can always pickle stuff like red cabbage usually is. You can also do it with onions, garlic and a few other things. I usually make mead each year for booze. Going to yet again attempt to get apples from my trees and keep the squirrels away(losing battle most years) but half of my corn im going to try to make booze with it.

Cool, I forgot to add this, you can place ripe tomatoes in a glass jar and an heat resistant cap and boil them at a low temperature for a couple of hours.
Of course you'll have to sterilize them if they were used before.

Usually, to make this canned tomatoes, usually the oblong varieties are good, you cut it in four pieces, put it inside the jar and push it down hard enough so there will be no air bubles, don't throw away the liquid that comes out because it will keep the tomatoes from the air.

Don't fill it up on the brim, leave some space so when you will boil the jar won't explode.

Now, for the cooking part, to pasteurize the finished product here we use an old copper pail that can hold probably 80 liters of water.

Add some cloths to the base of the pail, then place the jars, leave little to no space between the jars, or when the water will boil they will start to move and get destroyed, add then another layer of cloths and another of jars, keep that up, then fill it with enough water to cover the last row of jars.

Start with a really low temperature or the water will start boiling strongly and destroy the jars, once it starts boiling let it boil for at least two hours, then leave the pail alone to cool down.

That should be it.

You can do the same with straight tomato sauce inside of beer bottles, but you'll have to grind it with an immersion blender, then pour it inside the bootles and seal them, boil them in the same way and it will be the same.

Usually when we make those canned tomatoes we consume them at least four months later, since if you eat them before they will still taste like raw tomatoes.

I remember once i found an old bottle and it was still looking good.

Oh my man. I just planted over 30 fruit trees I bought from the arbor day foundation website for like 8 bucks a pop. (I suggest joining for free trees and a discount) they arrive a little younger than store bought trees, but you can buy more. Select the tree wizard function and it will tell you what type of trees to buy for your area. Good luck brother!

I'm going to mention to you that Potatoes are great and all, but aren't a sufficiant diet by themselves. They are pretty low in Iron and a lot of B vitamins. A lot of grains, brassicas, curcurbits, and root veggies can be grown in bulk as well.

Grandmas keep pot as an ornamental plant, what is your problem? It's just a fucking plant, many things in your own balcony/garden could get you much more high than pot. It's an annual flower for god fucking sake.

So I was in the slammer for some time, y'see. And in the 'Learning Center' taking a course called Horticulture, y'see. And some of the guys there were only attending for the sentence reduction. Never raised their hands. Never participated. Never showed an ounce of effort above the mandatory minimum, hmm'k. And then there was me, some acquaintance of mine, and these three jovial kids, you follow? Now, these three... all they did was ask the teacher dink questions like: conditions for growing things in basements, growing weed, types of cannibus, using hash for fertilizer, asking her if she'd be interested in selling their product. Just questions about pot.

You point out a male in his 20s or 30s like myself that claims he has a garden and fat chance it'll be some pothead loser.

also here you can't see flags but you'd be surprise on the diversity there.

Any fellow anon has a chart about the types of soils and what grows better in each kind (even if just on a very general basis it would help select were to plant each thing)

I'm trying to create a better place for my bug and pest, is this a good set up to encourage immigrations to my land?Using wood bak as housing and tree branch as a fence. Will they actually appreciate what I am doing or just gonna be on welfare and eat all my crop? There plenty of bird around so I don't much with the new refugees. I assume the traffic and economic from bug and pest around my plant is worth it?

Bra you could grow onions or peppers in a pot
>>
>>1014860
6 INCH pot isn't not very large for a pepper plant. That's a seed pot you start one in then move out to the garden or a 2.5-5gal bucket. You'd need to grow herb-type stuff like chives, shallot, leek, or garlic. You'd at best be able to grow one onion per pot. I grow garlic in much smaller containers strictly for their green tops as an herb. I do that every winter.

I'm from south Florida. Currently have a tangelo and key lime tree in my yard.
Just keep them hot and watered.
They'll produce so fucking much citrus you won't have to worry too much about bugs spoiling your shit. You'll have to worry more about what to do with the 17 gorillion oranges you get all at once.
When I was younger me and the neighbor kids would have navel orange fights. It's all fun and games until you get hit with a rotten one.
