I had a friendo years ago who had a 1200 sportster. Went on and on how he could turn it into whatever kind of bike he wanted and how great it was. Often stopped at the dealer to pick up some new shiny part to put on it. I recently had picked up a 1000cc sportbike. I shit you not he thought his 1200 would eat my 1000 up because, "japcrap." So one day I convinced him to switch bikes with me. I WARNED HIM like a good 5 times that just because my bike is only 1000cc's that he should take it easy on it as it does 104 indicated in 1st gear and tops out at 186. It was like he didn't believe me. So I get on his bike knowing it was going to be a turd but he legit didn't seem to know what he was getting himself into. KEK the LOOK ON HIS FACE THE FIRST TIME HE TWISTED THE THROTTLE. I swear he turned pale white and almost fucking died on my bike. There was no way I could keep up on his shitty low-revving low horsepower wooden brakes pile-of-Harley but he managed to slow down after almost doing an endo over the bars on my bike. He must have been expecting to have shitty brakes like his bike and grabbed a big 'ole handful of front brake after he almost shit himself.

He outright refused to ever ride my bike again.

Looking for an adventure bike to replace my DR350. The 350 is perfect for true (third-world) adventure but just can't quite keep up on first-world highways for long stretches, and I'm thinking my next trip will be around the US and Canada.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any good stock option: something with power to pass at 70mph, but can still go off-road. I'm thinking the best options are a DRZ with a wide-ratio gearset, or a DR650 with a whole new (non-shit) suspension. In either case I'm looking at about a grand to fix what shouldn't have left the factory as-is.

Are there options I'm overlooking?

Prefer good value over bad, but with this next trip I'll have the option of selling when I'm done (I'll start and then end in Canada a year or so later) so don't really care about the upfront cost.

But even willing to spend big bucks I'm not sure there are better options. The KTM690 is unreliable from what I've heard (plus overkill), as is the CCM 450. And both have underseat tanks which means adding a bigger tank is expensive and complicated, plus fueling with bags on is a huge pain.

DR650 or XR650L, ignore the KLR and DRZ memes. You'll need to get a bigger tank and taller sprockets for both.

You should really think about how much you'll be off road and how tough it will be, the 650 singles can do highway but on major American highways with traffic going 80+ they're too slow and buzzy. One of the more dirt oriented adventure bikes (1190/1090, AT, Tiger XCX) can do 90% of the off road stuff and will be infinitely better on the road.

It says 'super unleaded' on my tank, what happens if I put regular stuff in?

The regular unleaded over here is 95, and super is 98.

It will literally only cost £1 extra to fill up with super desu but just curious.

Aye I was toying wiith the idea of getting a Versys before getting the ER6n.

Got to the bike shop, and the Versys they had was a case of "looked better in the pictures online"...but next to it was this black ER6n, couple of hundred quid more but pristine, low miles, comfy to sit on etc so I took that instead a few weeks later.

Had it for a year now, zero problems with the engine etc, can't fault the bike, only negative i'd say is feels a bit dull when I think basck to bikes i've had before.

I honestly miss my gas guzzling Triumph Speed Four.

I want to do this USA trip since I passed through the western US on my way to Latin America and was blown away both by how gorgeous it was, and how little it cost (between camping and couch surfing). In particular, Moab blew my mind, but I was really held back by the 80/20 tires I had on (even with the 'light' DR350).

The DR650 and XR650 seem like the obvious choices, but the XR is so fucking tall even with lowering links I wonder if I can ride it loaded up at 5'8". It's basically a 150% scale version of the DR350, which would seem to require a 150% scale human.

The DR I worry about whether it's workable off-road: do people manage to do trails on them? Clearance seems low, and would need a whole new suspension (at least at the front) from what I gather.

Passed my bike test yesterday, went to look at an 03 cbr600rr today from a private seller.

I didnt buy it as it had a few issues I wanted to check first before making an offer.

There was rust at the top of the forks, extending down at least half an inch beneath the bottom yoke. pic related. I'm not sure how much travel there is in the forks and if the seals would reach the pitting?

secondly the oil light was on, I stupidly didnt check the oil level at the sight glass but assuming the oil level is fine when I go back, is this a potential problem? more than just a bad earth somewhere?
