Some people want a functional riding position and not an office chair on wheels.

Also a VFR for example is only a sport tourer in the sense that it's a sport bike primarily used for touring (the only thing they changed when they started marketing it as one it was adding VTEC to make the fuel range better and beefing up the rear subframe for panniers), something like a Ninja 1000 or FZ1 is literally just a standard with bodywork.

On my way to work today I adhered to all traffic rules (except for lane splitting which is tolerated but would let you fail license tests). It was so relaxing! And only took me like 5 minutes longer (that's around 15%).

You coming to SEM? From where do you start?
>>
You can't sleep so you decide to take your bike for night run. You grab your gear and walk outside. It's cool, but not too much so, with the faintest of breezes blowing by. You straddle your baby and turning the key, press the button and listen to her purr. Sitting there for a minute you just listen, the exhaust rumbling, taking in the subtle tones of what you know to be true passion. You step down into first and roll the throttle, pulling off, no idea where you're going. There aren't a lot of people out this time of night, in fact no one you realise. Street after street, there seems to be no one else. You see parked cars but no ones driving. Strange indeed, but you ride on. You decide to take advantage of this and go to a long stretch of straight road you know about. Arriving, there is still no one in sight. You take off! Quickly shifting from first to second. Then to third and fourth, hearing the whine and scream of the engine, loving. You hit fifth, then sixth, pushing your bike to it's limit. Suddenly you realise you've left town. There's a few houses here and there, but you don't know where you are. You've been on the road before, how did this happen. You continue on, deciding to explore this new area. After a while you see a little diner in the middle of no where. So you decide to stop and grab a coffee. You walk in, there's a low lighting, but not so much so to call it dim. You scan the diner and it's empty, save for the waitress behind the counter, and a lone black helmet sitting on it. You decide to take the seat next to helmet, strike up a conversation with the owner when they come back. The waitress comes over, the absolute cliche of a diner waitress with the homely, but not exactly displeasing face, hair in the standard bun, with a few stains spattered on her apron. You tell you'll have just a coffee. She brings over a mug and fills it, you sip on it, not the best you've ever had but it'll suffice. You sit there for quite a while it seems.

Tired and needed something to do so I'm just writing shit.
Maybe it sounds weird. But you turn the key then press the start button, spose you'd hit the run button before hand as well, but I always leave mine in the run position. And I suppose if it's kick start totally not applicable. But I couldn't decide on a bike to use, so I went generic.

Crashed my bike 3 weeks ago and had to go to ER because I had really bad chest pain, and they said I had nothing. I still have some pain on my chest and some times it gets really bad, I just noticed today the hospital called me and left me a voicemail telling me to call them as soon as possible and that it was regarding the injuries I had.

What the fuck? Do hospitals realise shit 3 weeks later or something? What could it be? I'm scared
>>
>>17307893
Here's the problem they can't lay a finger on:
The short is obviously meant to be atmospherically weighty. The vocabulary throughout was not.
Every descriptor here is the most universally gray possible. "Subtle tones" not a grumbling twin, a whirring v4, or the jagged ambling of a carbureted anything. "Not too much so" (night air), over penetrating salt, biting desert, crisp mountain. "But it'll suffice"
Seriously?

You focus too much on action, when the narrative calls for sensation.
Stick to shitty screenplays. You'll always have a director to eat these shit-sandwiches.

Bzzt. Stick your head in a bowl of active yeast. Add soap.
It'll start (insert douche flavour here), but through the course of a well described finger check you stir up something acrid...like a dive-bar pisspot.... As the audience nears the folds, the "stunning revelation" is betrayed as RECENTLY "used goods".

Mate that imagery to Old Boy's penchant for action (a rutted dirt access to shore?) and you're bestseller status.

They, like most of the cool hondas from around that time, have electrical problems. Replace the R/R with a yamaha unit (custom mounting solution required) ASAP. Also ask about prior failures. They usually undervolt and die, but sometimes they overvolt and melt half the harness.
>>
>>17307890
Probably not, exams are right during SEM

>>
is there a distinct feel or noise that is indicative of valves being out of spec? my second-hand bike may or may not have had them done, but idles fine (carb'd, too), doesn't get too hot, never has any weird noises/other things appear at any speed, and seems to have a pretty consistent tick/clunk/properly-functioning engine sound. I've heard that if valves are too tight, engines are unusually quiet. anything else I should look out for? im too poor to get the mechanic to do it, and it's a bitch to get to the valves myself and I don't trust myself to do it the first time.
>>
>>17307989
I was doing this cause the thread was dead, and I couldn't sleep, so I was just jotting down what came to mind. And it was grey as far as the bike on purpose, couldn't decide on an actual bike. That was really just the intro, the story was supposed to go on, but I had to leave.

>>17308091
Top clamp on the F4i is thin aluminum. I wouldn't want to drill holes for fear of breaking it. Then if I did there wouldn't be thick enough metal to tap and screw into, so I would have to use a nut on the back side and hope everything stays alligned perfectly. I probably couldn't even center the holes well enough.
>>
>>17307959
Google it. I've found a few old manuals posted to various forums for free. There are sites where you can buy them as well.
>>
>>17308181
They probably make a bracket that attaches to the fork nubs that are above the clamp

It's as expensive as you would expect for a low-demand item that probably has to be machined per purchase

To evoke a feeling?
Without descriptors, everything reads like a technical manual...a comparison that may be beyond you both if you missed the literal subject of this discussion.
If the salad you're looking at doesn't build, recede, or maintain consistent tone it's something a professor insisted on. If it does, it's intent. How hard is that?

Fuck your attention span. Read an action oriented book: quick pacing between points, choppy rapid-fire vocabulary, strong impactful language.
Read an emotionally charged book: laborious descriptions, complex sentences, coloured language.
It is a little obnoxious in correspondence, in that after learning to "choose words" it becomes hard to turn off. In conversation, even, I'm confused for some elitist prick because of what amounts to an accent.

Im VERY interested in it actually.

Saw one recently and it looks even better in real life than on pictures. Aftermarket exhaust removes the one major visual fault and that single sided swingarm is pure sex.

It also supposedly corners like a dream and its not absolutely batshit with its power output like the european nakeds.

Last thing.
That bronze part on the radiator used to lack drops of coolant. What do I do? Is it screwed, do I simply have to fasten it? It didn't look like it was screwed.

Can I refill the coolant with just (distilled) water in the summer or it always needs 50/50 for lubrication? There's still some of the old coolant but it's under the min level.

>>17308894
if you're that gay italian with the SV again, I'll go out and find you
>>
>>17308894
That 'bronze part' is your coolant temperature sensor. I doubt it is meant to be used as a plug for filling the radiator. I would suggest checking your manual. Usually the fill port will be the highest point on the system, to help prevent air pockets. You can top off with distilled water as long as you aren't replacing a lot of coolant. If you replace a lot of coolant, use the correct anti-freeze mix. Also be sure to check it with a hydrometer before winter.
>>
>>17308832
Looks like it needs the fluid druid. Are your brakepads worn?

>>17308839
Maybe provide us with a level picture. I see a bubble top right of the lil window so I guess it should be alright. Maybe too much in there? Open it up and have a look.

>>17308894
To avoid forgetting to replace your coolant in winter, use real coolant. Don't mix two types of coolant because they might react to eachother, which can result in a changed boiling point, foam or w/e. You say it used to leak - so I assume it doesn't leak anymore. If so, leave it.
>>
>>17308944
Yes. I want to be certain about it.

I could easily refill the coolant with distilled water but I would need to learn how to change the rear brake fluid.

Why are you guys so angry for a couple of bike related questions?

Hey guys. Need some wizard advice from you guys. This Ninja 300 here has sat for a few months. When I first touched it, I started the bike up and it rolled over, but it was "weak." It stayed on for a bit but when I cranked the gas gently, it died out almost immediately. I did this a few times before it wouldn't start at all. I was expecting the battery to be dead. So I hooked it up to a battery charger and let it sit until it read "FULLY CHARGED." However, it still won't turn over. There's noise like it's trying to, but won't. I'm about to pop the fairing off. But before I do, is there any stuff I should check first that might be causing this? These fairings are kind of a bitch to remove. If not, what are your guys ideas for troubleshooting? What would prevent a bike that's sat a few months (but now has a fully charged battery) from starting?

I didn't mean I was going to refill it from there. Yeah, I thought it was the sensor because of the wiring connected to it.

So, do you think it just needs to be fastened?

About the coolant it's just below the minimum level so I guess distilled water should do the job for now.
>>17308953
Thanks.
Brakepads looked almost new.

Obviously I checked the front brake fluid with the bike leveled and it was the same as in the picture.

1. Gas might be old, but it should start a bit, right?

2. Don't think it's the starter. It sounds like everything sounds fine. There's a couple of guys hanging around and giving their opinion, and they say it sounds like it's not getting gas. I'm starting to agree with them.

3. How do I troubleshoot that? I don't think so.

4. I think it may be the injectors. How do I diagnose that? Is that easy?

>>
>>17309097
Need to clarify, I thought you said earlier that the starter wasn't turning over. Is the starter working (and the motor isn't starting), or is the starter not working?
>>
if my bike isn't ready to go tomorrow I'm going to sudoku, post riding tunes so I can sit on my bicycle in AGATT and pretend.
>>
>>17309111
The starter turned over the first time, but won't now. But it sounds like it's trying. Like, there's noise (chyechyechyechyechye, you know, like something that's trying to turn over). It's not silent.
>>
So I bought a DR650 a few weeks ago, and something about it doesn't seem right. It barely can even get to 70 mph in 5th with the throttle wide open, and sometimes it just stalls out from a stop if I give it any gas. What the fuck is wrong with this thing? Is it just the carb or is this a more concerning underlying issue?
>>
>>17309128
That *chyechyechyechyechye* is the starter solenoid bouncing in and out because the battery is too dead (or there is a major short in the starter motor). The solenoid has enough power available to engage, but once the starter motor tries to run, it draws down the power so much that the solenoid disengages, and it keeps that over and over again. I'm gonna say 85% chance your battery is bonked. If it is an wet battery, make sure the water levels are correct. To confirm that it is the battery (and not a short in the starter motor), jump it off of an automobile. Google up instructions for jumping a bike from a car first. You need to not connect anything until the car is turned off, otherwise the higher charging voltage could damage things. If it starts up fine, the battery is the issue. The battery may be ok, but just very dead. Take a short ride, get home, shut down and try to start it again. If it starts, congrats. If not, you probably need a new battery. Other option would be to pull the battery and take it to a shop with a good professional charger that has a reconditioning function.

>>
>>17309164
Could just be surface charge. Basically due to some sulfation related chemistry shit I don't really understand, a lead-acid battery will get into a state where it appears to be fully charged, but actually has something less than full charge. To get past it, you hit it with a reasonably high-amp load (high-beams) for a minute, which burns through it. After that, it shows a more correct reading. It may be possible to just let it charge normally now, or the battery could be bonked.
>>
>>17309154
Used or new?

If used, a jet/carb problem no doubt. DR engines have a near bulletproof reliability reputation so I doubt it's the engine.

The ignition system is very basic and there are little to no computer/electronics so I think it's the carbs.

Not a professional, and I don't know anything about the fairings on a Ninja. Personally I wouldn't button it up until it is running again. There is still a slim chance that it is a short in the starter (though you would probably have melted a fusible link or wire before you drained the battery that fast if it was the case).

The chinks haven't figured out how to build an engine that isn't made of cheese yet. Expect a 30k motor lifespan and a bunch of miscellaneous smart parts to fail. Koreans are just now figuring out how to build a decent car, and it'll be a little while before their bikes are acceptable still.

Just depends on how fast or slow you want to go on street vs dirt.
>>
>>17309565

That's what you get for buying KTM.

Seriously, I don't know why people still do this. If sales tanked they would be forced to make their engineers pay attention to things like longevity and quality control.

But KTM is marketed at people who will just bring the bike to the dealer under warranty every time it has a problem and will sell it as soon as the warranty expires I guess, so they don't care. Buying pre-owned KTM is even worse because they almost always have poorly done repairs from previous owners.

I've had a few KTM bikes come through my garage and they were all great fun when working, but universally had more issues, more regularly than anything else. Finicky, difficult to find documentation and parts for some models, all of it.

Never again.

Big LOL to you.

It would be nice if the engines lasted, but they're not built for longevity... they're race bikes.

Just look at the LC4 motors, they're heavy as fuck, but they will run for like 50k+ KMs as long as you keep an eye on the cam followers.

KTM 2-strokes are pretty great though, 200 hours on a piston is great.

I don't own a KTM, but I do own a 2016 Beta, and apparently they go for 200 hours per piston as well, only bad thing is the non-waterproof electrical connections.

In looks obviously. It has the same kind of side vents as the 213V, still has the undertail exhaust, and the big smooth surface on the front cowl, half hidden headlights and big rectangular windscreen is much more GP styled than the massive plunging headlights and angular shapes on the old Fireblade or the super tiny cowl on the new Fireblade.

>Easiest of all dirtbikes to maintain.

Havin' a fucking laff m80. You're delusional if you think it's purely an issue with regular maintenance. KTM has serious engineering problems and if you're going to buy one you need to be aware of them.

>>17309602

>50,000 kilometers OR miles on a heavy mid-power 4-stroke motor.
>Acceptable in 2017.

Pick one. That's totally unreasonable. If your modern 4-stroke motor needs more than valve adjustments and oil changes in that time line the bike has engineering problems. The LC4 is probably the best motor KTM has to offer right now and it's still got issues.

>I don't even have a KTM but my Beta is great even though it's lacking a basic fucking necessity for a dirtbike and should never have made it out of first production without it.
