Yesterday I posted about how my motorcycle wouldn't start. Basically, I'd press the start button and all I'd get was a single click from the starter relay and nothing would get it going

Today, I went out to take the bike apart and test the starter and solenoid and battery etc but I tried turning the bike on first and it fired up immediately

What the fuck is going on?

Applying for a dealership job today.
What goes into an employment letter? Special considerations for Old Man Honda?

Without help, I tend to get into 20 page screeds about the lack of effective marketing, specifically to people under 30. They're leaving so much money on the table...
>>
>>17309787
fist how are you applying for this, randomly posting a letter, responding to a job posting, something else?

second what do you mean by employment letter? just your cv, you've got one and you need a cover letter or both.

And what about racing motorcycles lasting 30,000-50,000km is a bad thing?
go back even 10 years and 20,000km for a racing dirt bike was awesome.

If you want a reliable dirt bike buy one that was designed to be reliable not one that was designed to be lightweight and powerful...

Posting on dealer website. It doesn't specify "cv here," but I was going to use the "additional comments" section for that.
I have a scattered resume, with every job I've ever gotten derived from some manner of bullshit. Cover letter, undercover visit ("you know, I actually applied yesterday"), plant an employee, etcetera.
I just have no idea what a bike sales(woman) wants to hear.
The manager also rides a vfr, is white, and is an army veteran. Makes me one for four from the jump.(vet)

hmm ok, this actually benefits you. Your CV should be short anyway (2 sides of a single sheet of a4 exactly) but you'll want to condense it even further for this.
Since its online it is even easier to not read so don't wast their time if they do happen to give you their time.

I don't know you exact situation but I would go for this sort of formula.

>personal statement
four or five sentences that highlight what you say in the later sections. Don't say anything here if it isn't mentioned later on.

>list of specific skills
should have one per line, and this isn't "good with people", you are puting things like "drivers licence", "xyz certification", "first aid" etc. you say you were in the army so you should have a few and lets you remind him of the connection.

>employment history
two ways to do this first is a list of jobs followed by a paragraph that describes what you got from them all. this is good if they are all quite similar as you can get all the key points without repeating your self
second way is a short paragraph for the three most recent/relevant if they are all quite different. good if you are old and have had hundreds of random jobs over the years

>education
depends how much education you have and how long ago it was but keep it brief unless you are doing something right now or have a recent and relevent qualification from uni/college. again if you got any qualifications from the army put it here

>optional extras
only put this in if it is directly relevant. eg I work in IT and put the STEM volunteering I do here because it gets employers harder than diamond.

as far as the actually content for each section and what they want to here it is actually very simple.

cont.
>>
>>17310154
since it is vehicle sales they want to know three things.
>are you interested in motorbikes
yes you are
>are you a retard
no you are not
>can you talk to people
yes you can

every single sentence should emphasise one of these and should follow the template
>"I'm the fucking best and this is an explicit reason why"

every time you mention something you should question "who gives a fuck" and if the answer isn't on the page write it eg
>"in my last job I helped people buy draggon dildos"
who gives a fuck
>"my last job gave me a strong foundation in sales as I was responsible for recomending the best dragon dildo's for each of our customers individual needs"
>"I'm the fucking best and this is an explicit reason why"
oh ok there's a point here

Crossrunner and Crosstourer don't even pretend to be able to offroad anyways, they have an extra inch of ride height, upright bars, and a taller screen and that's about it. They only look sort of tall because they move the front bodywork away from the front tire.

What's up /dbt/?

Bought some attire today, new kevlar jeans and a proper driving jacket with kevlar linings and a Nolan N87 to replace my old AGV.

AND BOIII, can I tell you, some of the best purchases I've made. Went on a small ride at 10:30pm while it was 6 degrees celcius outside, felt like a warm summer evening AND I could hardly feel any wind at all, noticed I was doing 160kmh all of a sudden and wasn't being ripped apart on my naked.

Best suggestion I can make to all of you

It will make driving so much more enjoyable.

BTW fuck Nolan for not providing the N87 remote install plate with the N-Com B5.

Motorcycles have ruined cycling for me. It was my only way of staying in shape too besides bodyweight exercises. Not road cycling but leisurely riding dirt/paved trails on a mtn bike. It's just so uncomfortable and slow and I've rode all the trails around me multiple times.
I used to ride my bicycle to work for many years but I feel much safer taking the motorcycle, I can ride away from traffic rather than have it blow past me two feet away because my town is semi-rural so there's jack shit for non-car infrastructure. It's funny; a year of riding a motorcycle to work and down highways, in heavy traffic, and I become confident. But years of riding a bicycle on the side of the road and I still get that scared, anxious feeling. It's suicide.

>>17310606

Every state I've lived in, there are two ways to get it.

Option 1:
>Take written test at local department of motor vehicles.
>Receive motorcycle permit on passing.
>Permit allows you to ride anything legally, but no passengers and only during daylight.
>You have 6-12 months to learn and prepare for the riding test.
>At any point within that time, you take a simple test that demonstrates basic riding skills.
>Weaving cones, starting, stopping normally, fast stops, u-turn, signalling, etc.
>Pass riding test, receive 'M' endorsement on your license.
>You're done.

Option 2:
>Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation class.
>Total class time is generally 16-20 hours over two days.
>You only need to wear decent footwear and jeans.
>You're provided a loaner bike, AND gear if you don't have your own.
>Receive a couple of days of hands on riding and classroom instruction.
>They administer a written and riding test.
>You take the certificate to the DMV and they issue you a license.
>You're done.

Either way works, but the class is highly recommended by anybody that takes it. You also get to actually ride a bike before you pick one to buy, giving you a little experience in what you might want. Plus, most insurance companies will offer a discount on your premium if you provide them with your certificate from the class.

So, easy either way.

hey /dbt/ so i am removing my gsxr engine to sell and I really don't want to drain the oil since I just put a fresh batch of expensive ass motul 300v in it.

is there any way to do this? I see that the engine is connected to the oil cooler by those two hoses so I imagine I would have to leave the oil cooler attached if I want to keep the oil all inside, right?

Drain the oil bud. Anyone doing a engine swap will change the oil. No one will care or see it as a better deal if you say "yeah fresh oil in it"

I was exaggerating, most faired bikes you don't even need to remove anything to change the oil. Point still in place, if your ruling out all faired bikes due to a fraction of time saved on maintenance your an idiot

How did I get it inspected? "Hey my bikes out here at this address, heres my keys" and they send out a trailer and truck to pick it up.

The guy with the 2007 FXDB that's been bumming around on gravel, dirty and side roads because of the no insurance.
>>

Not him but not at all. I used to do it all the time on my permit and just hope I didn't get pulled over. I would reccomend if it's not just flat, straight highway you should know the road before hand though. There's certain places that build up gravel or unexpected turns and it's good to know those before night riding. And use your brights way more than in a car, they really do help.

Until recently was lad off, company went bust, just landed myself a new job as a chef.

It's a shame as I loved the speed four, but you name it/think it, it went wrong...anything that could break on it DID break, easily spent five times more than I paid for the bike over the course of a year and sold it ultimately when shit just kept going wrong and I figured the bike was too much of a money pit and had already fucked me cash wise. Traded it in with a bit of cash and got the ER6N just before we all lost our jobs.

Slowly saving up again but not sure what to get, the ER6N doesn't "do it" for me like the Triumph did, though if I'm honest, I think my ideal bike would be a stripped down/naked ST1100.

Always been tempted to try it as a project.

Have had lots of bikes over the years, all with varying degree's of problems, meanwhile my stepdads ST1100 from 1993 has covered 120k miles without a single issue other than a recent oil leak. Fixed the wicked high idle (4-5k RPM) on my '83 GS550E tonight. New intake o-rings, setting the float height back to spec and cleaning the pilot jets seemed to do it. Has a bit of an issue with hanging idle but it does eventually settle back down.

Dangerous what? If someone really wants to learn correctly, they should start with analog everything.
The moderns are Darwin because the community doesn't need more people acting reckless because they think traction control actually works.

I started on a drum-brake 250, learned to ride that too fast, then upgraded. People with money to buy new seem to have choice fatigue.

Your sprockets look ok. If you are getting binds, it's because you are not lubing that non-o-ring chain correctly. Unlike O-ring chains, the stuff you apply needs to get all the way inside and lube the pin, roller, and bush.

Any lube you use will need to go on liquid enough to get in there, but then evaporate / gell / thicken enough to stay there. Gunk makes a good product for this. If it's not messy as hell, you aren't using enough.

It's pretty clean in all the photos.

Then again, so is my GL1100. I bought it like a month ago because I wanted a touring bike for weekend trips this summer, and I've taken it on one so far plus a lot of scooting around town. I like it, but it's also tempting to try a bunch of different bikes in succession. The FJ1200 would fit my touring needs too.

>>17312584

>Air cooled.

You know, I didn't even consider that. The GL1100 is water cooled and so are most of the other bikes I've been looking at recently. That does kind of change what the 30,000 miles mean.

You could use those sprockets quite a bit longer, especially if it's not too powerful of a bike. Just keep an eye on it. But if you want to start fresh, go for it. Keep the old sprockets for another shitbike, the rear is still good.
>>
>>17312625

The GL is comfy as hell and really satisfying in a lot of ways. It's honestly a great bike, especially when you take into account it's a 1980's touring bike. It's also still pretty new to me.

That said, I've only just started branching out from dual sports so I honestly have very little idea what I'd really prefer in the long run. I'm in that weird place where I want to try more stuff, but I haven't had the GL long enough to get to where I can sell it without wondering if I'll regret it later.

Cool shit pops up for sale all the time near me, so maybe I'd better just ride the GL for a while.

>>17312627

I don't know what you're talking about. It's not a cornering machine or particularly fast, that's for sure. It's ridiculously comfortable though. It has a reputation for going well over 100,000 miles. The stator thing is easy to monitor, and this one is freshly restored and I've checked everything. It's as close to new as you could get.

I've had the opportunity to ride quite a few types of bikes. So yeah I get you.
I went from straight dirt, to dual sport, then I had a postie for a bit. Then I went to supersport, found out that's my niche, crotch rockets. I actually like the riding position, just not the seats.
Dream bike is in an H2R. But I like em all.
Well, cruisers were about the only thing I didn't enjoy, couldn't get past the position. Felt wrong to me.

My advice; play it safe and keep the GL. It's a real treat having an old bike with low miles and in great condition, it's just begging to be ridden. Low miles + restored means no big surprises down the road, and you've been riding it anyways. I think it's gorgeous and the seating position looks much comfier too.
It's your call but 500 miles is nothing, give the GL a chance and do it justice before parting.

And you can see it coming - it's more like a roller coaster than a race. All the guys in line, moving up slowly, slowly, then suddenly it's your turn and there's no rear wheel in front of you, only the open gate, ready to swallow you whole.

It's not like a regular race where everyone is bunched up at the start and you have some distractions and jockeying for position during the first seconds. Your mind has no escape; you can't just leave it at "as long as I get ahead of everyone and stay ahead, I'm good." You have figure out your ratio of "I want to win" vs "I want to live" and ride *that* speed, the whole time, and hope it's fast enough. And at the start, there is no escaping that stark reality. The welcome distraction of dueling comes much later.
