You can buy a baiku from wherever you want if you're comfortable with the price, friend. I find bikes to be bargains anyway, they don't hold their value well.

if thats not enough, then there's not much to do but to throw money at the problem
custom seat, rear suspension adjustment, lowering set.

Classic-style bikes are good then if you're deathly afraid of the hours/hundreds it takes to spiff plastics back up (painting a metal tank is easier).

Dual sports are actually shit on road (slower than a fucking geo metro) and susceptible to all the same damage as nakeds.

Trying to learn how to ride will probably enroll in a course later on
What's a good beginner bike?
Budget is around 1-4k USD. Want something light so it won't give me trouble at DMV. Is the Suzuki Intruder good for this?

where your feet touch the ground doesn't matter as if you are tall enough to sit in a comfortable way and easily reach and use the handlebars.

Dual Sports are oft recommended because the bars/forks/wheels feel the most bicycle like, which is great for new riders to gain familiarity.
>>
>>17238553
Imagine how nice the TW would look with a slightly longer swingarm and a rear wheel the same size as the front wheel.
>>
>>17238617
>>17238594
The videos I've been watching about good first bikes have almost all said dual sports are great firsts because you can trash them without as much concern, they are a good trial by fire for bike handling (not the exact wording, but its what I'm guessing they're trying to say), and they let you go offroading if you decide thats a good idea.

Granted, the videos I've mostly seen about that was from guys who ride dual sports and streetbikes almost exclusively. I'm sure /dbt/ probably has lots of gripes about the youtube motovlog eceleb types.

I would unironically start on this bike.

>inb4 too much power

if you take a BRC you'll know whether or not you're prone to accidentally giving too much throttle or cutting the throttle when disturbed. personally, i only ever cranked the throttle open when nearly dropping the bike at a stop, with the clutch in.

i'd venture to say that the most vocal segment of dbt ride ride street bikes and dual sports. the others exist but they usually come in twos and threes for protection.
>>
>>17238509
I learned to ride on an 80s Husqvarna 500 2 stroke when I was 10, my feet were a foot off the ground, I could barely reach the pegs. I had to find a treestump, deep rut, or hillside everytime I wanted to stop. It's good, will teach you to plan in advance and not go stopping willy nilly. If you commute just have a milkcrate bungied to the back, whenever you need to stop throw the milk crate on the ground and put your foot on that. Kids today are spoiled with all these babby sized bikes with usable power bands.
>>
Is starting out on a CBR250 a bad idea for a beginner who's never ridden before?

>>
>>17238669

>>
>>17238681

>>
>>17238641
A DS can really make you hate street riding though

>shit tank range
>plank seats
>the single cyllinder engine is ONLY a good thing for hardcore dirt riders, on the street it just shakes the bike to fucking death so you can't use your mirrors.
>top end power dies off fast, $3k civics will overtake you
>knobby/stiff DS tires aren't the best thing to corner hard with, and you will have to corner pretty hard or run wide and crash as a new rider. everyone takes that one corner too fast, at least once. grip and clearance are nice things to have when it happens. can you handle the skids? no.

Slightly bigger dedicated street bikes have things like mirrors with rubber dampers mounted to fairing stays and engines with more constant power delivery and smaller vibrations, top end power that works on the highway, bigger gas tanks, grippier tires stock, flatter, wider, softer seats, oh, and the possibility of actually carrying cargo with beefier subframes and luggage racks or bungee net hooks most of the time.

And did I mention headlights? You want to test ride a bike at night. Some have brilliant headlights, others leave you so blind that 50mph isn't a safe speed without lots of streetlights around.

>>17238684
MSC loans you a helmet and expects you to show up in over the ankle boots, a reasonably thick long sleeve shirt, and durable looking gloves. All can be had at walmart for $70 total and will protect you decently given the low speeds and lightweight bikes the course involves.
>>
>>17238697
This sounds kind of bad, but are work boots and work gloves (maybe mechanic's gloves) permissible?
>>
>>17238696
Some of the rubber might be degrading and I'd shine a flashlight into the gas tank, but if you're on this board it shouldn't be an issue to fix anything on an old bike. If it's not a fuel injected fully faired V4 nightmare all crammed into a twin spar stressed member frame

It's like working on a fucking lawmower.

If the forks aren't leaking oil, the steering is free, and the shock isn't squeaking go for it.
>>
>>17238641
Those are crashers that think they are outcornering superbikes with their barely leaned over trail bike on road tires. Dual Sports are good for tall fucks that don't fit on small standards though.
>>
>>17238435
I have with the chicag/o/ group, we got to sit behind an autist in his monte carlo while he crawled through some nice twisties that we road nearly an hour to get to. Wasn't great.
>>
>>17238684
Buy gear because you will "need" it whether you take the course or not, then take the course and learn how to ride. That way if you are comfortable with your ability to ride or if you are scared/not great at it then you will be sure of wheter you want to buy a bigger or smaller bike
>>
>>17238705
i saw someone crash during the msf basic rider course during the oval section

their walmart gear held up. total injuries amounted to a bloody knee. you buy motorcycle specific geaar under the assumption that you're going to crash above 30mph and probably slide into something or tumble down the road.

if you can't ride you don't want to be out hundreds on damaged gear
>>

For the MSF course you'll be fine with jeans, work/hiking boots, and basic work gloves, you'll rarely go above bicycle speed.

I know I'm an asshole, but there's something about riding through traffic like your running from the cops.

Also inconvenient is only joyriding around the twisties and taking your car everywhere else because it's too hot to walk around your destination wearing two pairs of pants.

Those $1500 slip on touring pajamas are starting to look pretty nice, but you need a dedicated locking top box just to store it at your destination, and then two pigfat panniers to hold the stuff that would have gone in the top box

>>
>>17238839
helmets are small and slip right on top of your head

pants, you are lucky to stuff halfway into a helmet rolled up and might not go over your boots even with the ankle zippers

riding jeans are really the best thing if you can find ones that aren't too long because "(sportbike) riding position bro" or don't have a baggy higschool autist fit. it's harder than finding armored pants that let you walk and still hold the knee armor in about the right place.

yeah probably if you have a good straight smooth section to wind it out, one magazine even pegged it at 194, but most were a hair or to under 190

keep in mind that aero is a big factor in that, and the 1st gen busas only made ~170hp which 1000cc bikes have been making as much or more since around 2005.

Definitely yeah on the dropping. Out of the ten bikes, I don't remember see any of them that didn't have at least one of the handlebar sliders at a fooked up angle.

It kinda seemed that way today, pissed me off a bit. People were going really slow and taking corners super wide because of the rain, you couldn't even do the exercises properly. Hopefully they will be a bit more strict tomorrow on test day. I suppose I should keep in mind that some of these folks have probably never been on a bike before. I've only got about 20 hours, but that is huge compared to them.

Mfw it's never too fast for the bike. Every time I've seen this it has been such a pathetic speed that it could have been taken on a lowered cruiser with hard plastic tires. The problem with new riders crashing is that they don't know how to corner, not that their tires aren't grippy enough.

if you can't corner and have 0 sliding in the dirt experience, tires grippier and more stable than hockey puck DS tires or knobbies can save your life. otherwise you could panic from the squirrley bike feeling and fall over like a scrub, or actually skid

Tire flex mostly. Apparently aggressive trail braking tends to take them off because it pushes the edge into the ground, and it's obviously easier with lower tire pressure.

So DBT, there's a guy selling a Cagiva Mito 125, 2000 model 3 streets from me for $500. The engine is fucked and it needs new instruments and top 1/4 fairing.
He apparently bought it from a guy 4 years back who seized the engine from using the wrong two stroke oil like a chump.

Would it be worthwhile buying it to swap a different engine in? I have the tools and skills to do as such; And buying an original motor is out of the question as they costs thousands.

I love the look of it; i just wonder if anyone has done something similar before and would have tips. I've never worked on a faired bike before and swamping an engine into it seems space dependent.

I've got a full set of metric and imperial sockets, a full welding and tooling kits, taps, dyes, grinder, drill, lathe, press, shifters spanners etc etc.
i'm a boilermaker and welder my dude.
I've restored a cb100, rebel 250, crf250 and a ct110.
I'm feeling pretty confident about my basic skills for motorbike engines now.

Hence why i'm looking into a faired low cc bike.
I'm seeing if there are things that are beyond what i would already know besides; pull out the fucked engine, make any brackets or attachments to fit a new engine in and find suitable speedos/tacho for the frame/engine.

IDk what itallian bikes are like; i've only done jap stuff. They might have those crazy triangle screw heads for all i know.
Impart knowledge my friend.

>>17241456
i was thinking that; It's bloody gorgeous and is in yellow.
>>
>>17241238
Retro af. I love old school leathers. Too bad I'm a fatty and cant fit in dainese
>>
>>17241470
>They might have those crazy triangle screw heads for all i know.

You restored old japanese bikes but you wouldn't be able to deal with triangle screws?
>>

More like something I would need to buy the tools for.

the engine is a stressed member in an aluminum twin spar frame

any hack you fabricate will probably compromise the ability of the motorcycle to motorcycle.

consider just fixing the engine (hundreds) instead of swapping one (hundreds and a ruined bike) unless you can find one that actually bolts right up.
>>
>>17241176
don't these get like 30mpg on a 3 gallon tank, weigh as much as a loaded down sport tourer, and perform like a 650cc parallel twin?
>>
>>17241757
also

>check german ebay
>used motor for 600 cuckbucks that isn't seized
>>
>>17241407
You can easily swap in a 450 to 700cc 4 stroke single into that chassis, if you have rudimentary skills.

>>17241757
you are a moron who knows sweet fuck-all about engine swaps and should refrain from commenting.
>>
>>17241787
>implying he won't cram in a new engine with some flimsy stainless steel homemade brackets and turn the engine into less of a stressed member and more of a tumor bouncing around on the bottom of the motorcycle
>>
>>17241773
I noticed that; it's cost me near on $980 aud to purchase and ship; going on the trust that that motor is in alright condition and of which i would need to have a compliance plate added.

>>17241787
I was thinking that; There's a few 250 and 450 singles around the area that might fit if i measure it up before i spend anything proper.

>>17241795
My goal is to avoid that if i bought the frame.
>>
What's your ultimate all-weather motorcycle?
>go to leave work
>it's dark out
>currently drizzling
>35f and foggy

What's your rig of choice?
>>
>>17241795
While that is possible, the methodology for sticking a 4st single into a 125 2st frame is well documented. It's eay to do, and easy to find someone to do FOR you if you lack the skills.

Here in burgerland, I know I could get that shit done for a case of beer if I provide the frame and engine to my buddy.

full tuck. go as fast as you can. don't stop.

arrive dry and cozy

>>17241830
When a guy says "i restored a CT90 and can make some brackets, can I engine swap this 2 stroke sportbike?" or something I assume he's not going to do it entirely right.

It's like someone saying "I put a new muffler on my civic and swapped a carb out of a lawnmower once, do you think I could LS swap and twin turbo it in my garage? i have the skills."

Or a car.
>>
>>17241823
The best I've ever had is a sport bike which is infinitely better than an upright naked in the cold/rain if you tuck behind the fairings. The touring bikes with big tall windshields and fairings to keep the weather off you no matter how you sit look pretty nice.
>>
>>17241823
Rig of choice for shit conditions?

Whatever bike I am most comfortable on. I don't care about getting wet nearly as much as I care about how I can feel the bike and what it is telling me about the road surface.

This from a guy who has ridden sportbikes with ice on the roads, and ridden naked bikes in the rain on touring rides.
>>
>>17241839
Oh you'd be right there dude. I'm no motorcycle mechanic by any means.
I've been doing this for fun; That's why I'm asking about the cagiva. It's a currently cheap body to work with so if i do fuck it up and bastardize it; i'm only down a little bit of money.

I'm seeing if it is an impossibility, downright pointless more money then worthwhile or if it can be done.
>>
>>17241844
its an oversuit so no, as you'd wear whatever you want to be in after reaching your destination underneath. the entire thing is machine washable should you desire.
>>
>>17241867
If you just want to have fun and learn you should get a simpler design to work on or rebuild the original engine.

A restored cagiva would be worth several times your investment if you did fix it properly.
>>
>>17241877
Looks like a recipe for ball soup then. Fuck that. Where I ride its 70 when I wake up and can be in the 90's+ in the afternoon.

Ventilated pants would be fucking awesome. Extra pants on top of pants is just... ball soup.
>>
>>17241882
A restored mito, which is a beater learner bike?

Nah. You slam a KTM 650+ single in that and it would be worth WAY more. Better bike in every single way.
>>
