Very reliable. Just make sure it's in good overall condition and shifts smoothly.
They're not very comfortable in my opinion but a lot of people love them. I guess anything with much forward lean would be bad for me. Also the seat is pretty thin. It gets to the point of being unenjoyable for me after about 2 hours.
They can benefit a lot from a master cylinder upgrade.

Valve seals go bad over time. If you want you can do a leak test by pouring gas on the intake and exhaust ports. If they leak its most likely a worn out seal letting pass to much oil to the cylinder.

Right but it's weird to have such a dramatic leak after the work I did when it was fine before I tore it down. The seals shouldn't have been too affected by that.

I still think it was way too much oil burning but I'm going to tear it down anyway just to make sure the cylinders are ok.

>>17243192
It really wasn't that bad at all, hardest part was just getting the cam chain back on the sprocket and lined up right. Getting the pistons back in was a major pain in the ass to because this motor doesn't use studs but bolts and it's a two person job of holding the cylinder head and one compressing the rings. Eventually I just bought a couple feet of threaded rod and made temporary studs to line everything up.

But nah no special tools besides a torque wrench.
>>
>>17243140
It's running fine, went for a toogay run today after reverting the suspension to stock settings. Could write a large blog post about it. Front was great, rear needs some adjustment.

Tracked it last weekend but will have to take a break to remove some hardware on my forearm this week.

I have a buddy who (probably) got his R6 written off. I'm waiting on his insurance to confirm it. Will probably try to buy it from him for 500€ or so and make it my next track bike if all works out.

Was thinking of buying new fairings, working clocks, stock turn signals, a rear hugger, PP3s and whatever else, relegate the bike to street and pretty much ride it forever, I've grown quite attached to this bike. But that would run me close to 1000€ or so. Not the best decision ever.

Stand or bike jack. If you want to ride for many years, accumulate tools and equipment to support your hobby. Look for aluminum or other lightweight jacks or stands, and remember a hand truck is wonderful for moving gear to and from an apartment.

Pouring fuel into ports isn't reliable for checking valve stem seals (there are no other seals on a valve). What that is for is to check valve SEATING if you didn't tear down the head and visually inspect. Of course any time you remove valves you should replace valve stem seals using care, lube and a proper driver so as not to tear them.

They are cheap so replace (and inspect valve seats and stem play per service manual or have an automotive/motorcycle machinist show you how to check them).

Use a leakdown tester to check for any blowby and compression loss. You want one if you are gonna build engines. Inspect piston ring gap clocking to ensure your end gaps are properly separated from each other.

What? Why are you asking how to change valves when you don't even know what they are? Why would you change them anyway?

And no, not going to answer your questions, find out for yourself, you literally have all the information in the world at your fingertips and you're asking for someone to explain to you what valves are.

Aren't there like a dozen brands making liter superbikes? Why aren't there more of them in MotoGP or at least in the Superbike WC? And why has no one ever won the MotoGP on a non-Jap bike since 1975?

The only major brands building superbikes not in MotoGP are MV, who have no money, Kawasaki, who can't keep up with the tech, and BMW who only do production based racing. Aprilia isn't really competitive because they don't have any money, and Ducati won in 2007 and have been pretty good the last year or two, so I don't really see what you're asking.
>>
>>17243994

also keep in mind that part of the reason kawasaki is so good in wsbk is that they have really good factory backing, partly because they dont do prototype racing

So I have a CBR300R. My first bike, I've had it for like 9 months now. Pretty satisfied with the power and the fuel economy is great. Still under warranty until October I think so I can't really do much to it.

My only issue is the sustainability and comfort of long distance, high speed riding. The bike will do 75 forever, but unless I'm laying down on it doesn't have much more there. I can't do that too comfortably either for a long period of time, I'm 6'3".

I'm thinking my options are to own this bike for this summer and throw a different gear sprocket on like some people do so I'll sacrifice a little low end power for lower RPMs at any given speed. Unfortunately I'm not gonna do this until my warranty runs out, I'm assuming it will void it.
My other option I'm considering is selling this bike for basically what I paid for it and buying a Kawasaki Versys to try out a more standard bike for a while. Any input?
>>
>>17244990

My buddy has a Ninja 650 that seems a nice size, and like I said I'm 6'3" so while I fit fine on the CBR300R I'd kinda like to try out something bigger. That said, I'm still just 160lbs so I'm a little wary of a bike that's 100lbs heavier.

I have a question regarding insurance claims and getting the driver at fault to fix my bike. How does it work? I'll be picking up the police report monday and sending it to my insurance and they'll contact the drivers insurance, then what? I was told the driver's insurance will send someone to look at the bike when I send the police report but then what? Will I have to take the bike to a shop to get an estimate on how much all the repairs will be? or will the guy who comes look at the bike do that?

You guys know what's good? Knowing what's behind you. This is one thing I will always miss in the SV. It's not that the mirrors are too small or you can't get a good angle, but they're just so out of the way. On my 250 when you were looking at the road ahead you could look at the mirror without even moving your head, but on the SV you need to look at your wrist basically, since the mirrors are mounted on the handlebars

You'll scrub the lubricant off the chain and wear it out faster, plus you don't get all of it off. That's why you need kerosene or other cleaner to dissolve the grease and crap off it. Just do what this guy said >>17246387
Kerosene is probably cheaper than chain cleaner for the amount you get, and then lube it with gear lube. Do it right.

Never taken mine off. I've read that the leading link forks make solo riding extremely weird.
Plus I figure the front/rear tire would ride weird since the bike is angled 2 degrees off to the left of center to make riding on modern roads feel normal, which wears the tires more on the left side than the right.
>>
>>17246430
Are the solo versions corrected for the offset? I know they sell them, but never any near me except for sidecart version.
>>
>>17246434
The solo versions don't have leading link forks. Since the solos dont have sidecars, the bike rides like a normal bike, which means your tires won't have weird wear patterns.
>>
>>17246416
>don't get it all of

>>
>>17246442
They're fairly pointless on a bike, I've only had a legitimate use for them once in my life.

Why not both? But really I was just wondering if I could be feeling that way in error because say, my point of reference is the bike and I'm not looking at the ground or something.

>>17246216
I judge corners off exit speed, but that doesn't mean I don't want to know where maximum lean angle is.

because when you start hanging off the bike leans less and you need to be faster for the same lean
i also tend to take better lines when im hanging off and lean less
just set up a phone and film a corner where you hang off and look at how you're riding, you dont need to post it just looking at what youre doing from another perspective helps

ive been trying to improve my body position and corner lines and this really helped me
copy the pro racers because if there was a better way they would be using it. foot dangling not necessary though

>you'll scrub the lubricant off the chain
>you need kerosene or other cleaner to dissolve the grease
?Wouldn't the kerosene dissolve the lubricant?
>>
>>17246760
Yes, it dissolves the old lubricant and washes it off, together with the dirt
You apply new lube afterwards
>>
>>17246749
Who hasnt?
>>
>>17246774
So what is the problem with blasting the chain if the kero is going to strip it of lube anyway
>>
>>17246783
The water and scrubbing won't dissolve the lubricant and leave it where two surfaces meet -- which is exactly where it's important to remove the old grease and apply new lubricant.
>>

Melting your tire is technically possible but those things are treated to prevent that. I've heard that poorly finished roads can become soft enough that the asphalt sticks to surfaces though. Post pics
