Or maybe you were simply ambitious but rubbish. I mean, I commend Tucker to even make it to serial production, but a lot of his original ideas were completely unrealistic, especially for a newbie in the business with just some start up funds. That stuff was Citroen tier, and Citroen have had an army of engineers and decades of experience with wacky solutions to back them up.

any good videos to watch on how to replacing a camshaft with the engine still in the car for an I6 pushrod engine?

I fucked up by buying the wrong cam, ive been told its possible to jack up the engine and replace the camshaft through the grill but i want to see someone else do it first
>>
>>16644874
>the grill but i want to see someone else do it first
You can if the girl is big enough.

I know it's common on slant six valiants and darts but you gotta yank the radiator anyway.
>>
>>16645112
Do i have to take the harmonic balancer off first? Should i replace my timing chain when i replace the camshaft? So its completely possible to replace the camshaft without taking off the sump?
>>

Yes to those things generally, but be careful when putting the camshaft in, it's pretty hard to see what you're doing

Trying to get my self a 65 ford falcon, whats a good price it? My dad keeps saying anything above 4,000 is for one is overpriced for what the car is. The question is he right?
>>
>>16645685
dont be fooled by the size of the engine/overall size of the car. It was an economy car when it came out so it has no performance value to it. its body styling was and is really conservative and the technology was not paving new ground. its the equivalent of a base model Ford Focus in its target demographic, that is entry level 6 cylinder with no frills that youths could buy

4k is about right tho, wouldn't spend more because for that price i could have a V8 of the same vintage
>>
>>16645705
Thanks for the info, wanting to buy one for daily driving, and just wanted something classic but not 25,000. Any places you would subjest looking for one? Live in cali been trying over craigslist here and there, but they all want 8,000 or more. Looking in the 1,500-4,000 range.
>>
>>16645711
keep looking, dont settle for the first one you see on cl. It will take a while but one will come up for your price range. The ones you see for 8k just remember you see them because they havent sold, the ones that sell regularly go for cheaper. You'll find one in your price range just be patient and perform daily checks on cl
>>
Since question thread is ded, I'll ask here - there is a 1979 Taunus coupe near me, cheap (like 1.3k), with body and paintjobs done (and pretty well too). But its 1.6l.
Question is, what kind of semi modern 6 cyl can I put in with least effort?
>>
>>16645725
Also nothing too extreme, I think 140-180 hp would be enough.
>>
>>16645725
Is it the 1.6 V4 or I4?
The V4 has room to make power but you'd probably need to talk to ford directly for parts, they used to use those V4s as industrial engines as well.

only a V6 would fit in there, but whatever it is probably won't bolt to the gearbox.
>>
>>16645725
literally anything is going to require some degree of modification, dont be a lazy cunt

A Ford 250 or 200 will literally be the easiest because it requires the least amount of wiring, easily the cheapest option and it has some aftermarket so you're not completely in the dark on most things. Building those engines are piss easy too and can make 100hp in stock form but i have seen people take these engines out to 200hp

Its not exciting but it'll work
>>
>>16645739
Problem is, I'm in Yurop, so most v6 I see for sale are from some Mazdas or Mondeos.

>>
>>16645738
Its an l4.
I thought about the BMW l4, the 140hp one too, since its easy to get it complete (as in engine, ecu, drivetrain) for cheap here.
>>
>>16645725
The Taunus TC had optional Cologne V6s with 2L and 2.3L displacement. I don't know how well the V6 bolts into Taunuses that had the I4, but it probably shouldn't be much of an issue and the good thing is that the Cologne architecture was produced until rather recently actually.

Later on in the V6 there was a
- 2.9L making 140-ish hp in the Ford Ranger, Transit and Granada and an
- OHV 4.0L making 160 hp or SOHC 4.0L making 215 hp in the Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series and Ford Explorer

I think the 2.9L and SOHC would be worth taking a look at. 160 hp from a 4.0L sounds weak and thirsty as fuck. Just look up the Cologne V6 on Wikipedia and then click the links to the articles on the cars they were in to see which years apply.
>>
>>16645746
Whatever engine you get just at least get a matching gearbox as well. I'm not too versed on European stuff.

>>16645744
Looks like it's in better condition than any AMX i've seen in Murica and cheaper as well.
It also has the 4 speed which is really dank.
I'd get it if i was you.
>>
>>16645757
I'm not a huge expert in AMX. Honestly I'd get it myself but like I said I'm already working on a rally car at the moment.
>>
>>16645754
Actually let me correct that. The 2.9L made 160 hp in Europe thanks to (mechanical lol) fuel injection, and there was also a 2.8L in the Ranger and Granada also making 160 hp.

So your options are 160 hp 2.8L or 2.9L Cologne V6 or 215 hp 4.0L Cologne V6.

>sourcing AMC parts in Europe
Mopar parts and GM's pre-common special snowflake engines are hard enough as it is, but AMCs are true unicorns around here. There's a reason it's this cheap (apart from the rusty body). The bloke probably thought "oh yeah, I'm gonna restore me this cheap AMX and it's going to be great and everything" and then he realized that he'd have to ship most stuff from the US.
>>
>>16645764
I'd rather avoid anything with mechanical FI. I'll look into the 2.3 engine.
>>
>>16645777
Your choice, but the larger ones were produced more recently and put into more utilitarian vehicles which I imagine makes them far easier to find. The older ones basically only come from Granadas and Taunuses themselves, not worthless Transits or Rangers.
>>
>>16645773

I have had a lot of spitting through the carb. I know the bowls are full because I have checked the sight holes. When are rock the car I have it slopping through the holes. It doesn't leak from the boosters.
When I turn the car over with the butterflies open and my hand over the intake I don't actually feel it drawing any air in.

The winter of my discontent...
When I bought my 74 b300, it had a motorcraft carb on a phenolic spacer modified to be an adapter plate. Ran pretty good, so I didn't care that I had a gypsy-rigged fuel system. Once the real cold of winter set in this year, that spacer warped.
So I bought a Tomco remanufactured stock Holley. This was bad out the gate. Their rebuilding process used the wrong gaskets, and spraypainted the entire body silver (including the bores). This faint diameter reduction made my throttle plates not fully close. I could also tell they used the wrong gaskets. Sent that carb back for another-- there are no others available. So I'm waiting for it to be re-rebuilt. In the mean time, I found an aluminum adapter plate to remount my motorcraft. It wasn't right. Pattern 1/4" too small, but close enough for file work. After all that, I noticed the plate was too small in general and exposed the vac passages. Fuck it, Out of money-- I jb weld popsicle sticks over the gaps. No leaks. While doing this, I accidentally break my pcv. Now I have to breathe these crankcase fumes while I work on it.

>When I crank my engine...should I be seeing fuel leaving the boosters, or even a wet residue on the butterflies and barrels.

Cranking speed is way too slow to get the mains feeding so there shouldn't be any fuel exiting the boosters. Any fuel on or above the throttle plates in that situation should only be from the accelerator pump shot. In general if the boosters/venturis look wet the float level is too high for some reason and it's flooding over.
>>16650156
>When I use the accelerator pump
A cold start will almost always require at least one pump of the pedal to set the choke and this will also work the accelerator pump. The slightest movement of the throttle shaft should result in a discharge from the accelerator pump nozzle.

Sounds like a choke problem to me. Get it to fire and see if it wants fuel with some propane or carb cleaner. If it does then you're too lean on the choke. If it doesn't then it's flooding for some reason. Too much choke, too high a float level, burst power valve, etc

I've seen more Beetles on the side of the road than any other single car.
They were fine in the 60's when people didn't go that fast etc.

You could always put an old Porsche engine in one though.

Also check the entire exhaust system for leaks once a month, you don't want to die while driving down the road with your heat on.

It'll always smell like exhaust but that's just the nature of it.

Inspect the ducts for cracks and rot and honestly just keep a window cracked.

Hey guys, I've got 3 issues of this cool old magazine called "The back yard mechanic" and it's got a lot of useful information especially relating to working on classic cars (1970's). Would any of you anons be interested in some of the stuff in it? I was thinking about scanning all of it somehow and maybe upload it somewhere for everyone to see it and maybe It would help some of the new guys getting into classic cars.

Classic cars should be better divided.

Like '49 and earlier should be "ancient classic", '50-'79 should be classic, and '80-'([current year]-25) should be "modern classic". Or are there already divisions like this I am simply unaware of?

Does /ccg/ have any advice about how to take out the headliner on a 58 Edsel wagon? Just bought one and it's got a giant tear just behind the 3rd row seats. This is my first foray into the world of classic cars, too, so I'm woefully inexperienced.
>>
>>16666630
Rust. Check the frame for rot. Check the leaf springs and shackles. Look along the brake lines for specific spots that look significantly worse (this is mostly for the rear underneath the bed), this will show you the location of holes in the bed, if any. Check the underside of the doors cab corners, etc. Typical rust spots on a pickup. Also, what he said about a cold start and feeling how it shifts on a test drive. Did I mention rust?
>>
>>16668291
Also, I forgot to add that 80 and 81 are the years of the shitty weakened frame. They drilled holes in it to save weight. If you're planning on doing some heavy duty shit, I'd keep looking. That being said, it looks pretty clean, leading me to more or less believe that it is actually 90k and not 190k miles. You'd be able to tell visually.

The information available on the ban is foggy. Many people say it was only a 10 year band on manufacturing and that when it expired nobody started making them again due to liability concerns. Some people say it's still illegal to bring them across borders.

But it's absolutely true that the existing three wheelers are not illegal to ride. You can find them on Craigslist, insure them (mine has plates, all ORVs require plates in BC), and ride them on service roads/crown land as much as you want.

That being said, it's not necessarily "easy" to insure. The first 3rd party I went to for liability insurance wouldn't do it. The second I went to I just didn't mention that it's a 3 wheeler and the model number didn't set off any red flags for them. I actually own and daily one.
Considering highway speeds in Brazil are way slower, I have no problems with it, since it can keep 100 kph no problem. Anything over this, is a different story.
On the city tho, it drives like any other rusty shitbox, will endure a lot actually, had mine for 2 years so far, only had problems with the gearbox once, it's fixed already.

If you live anywhere you don't actually need the heaters that much, I'd scrap them. Again, I live in a hotter climate, so I ditched mine.

They are VERY reliable cars, and can take a good amount of abuse, no problems.

If by starting it, they mean, took off a lot of shit then gave up, then sure.

But really though, $1200 isn't much for anyone who owns a shop and restores cars/ does this for a living.

This is true. The car has potential to be cool, but all cars do. Unless you're emotionally attached to this particular one, you can buy a Torino in this shape but like with wheels and whatnot.

Honestly you could buy a ranchero for another 3k and throw the torino frame onto the chassis, then import all the innards.
>>
>>16676985
That would be very expensive. Not everything costs a lot, but to build a car piece by piece means the costs all add up

Well, he bought it after haggling the guy down to $3500. Still feels a little overpriced to me but it certainly is a clean truck, couldn't find anything significant to complain about. Looks like it has a very small rear main leak, a little bit of a power steering leak, and the power door locks have been removed, but the frame was in great shape, it cold started no problem, drove very smoothly through all gears, and looks almost immaculate on the outside besides a very small amount of surface rust on the bumpers that should steel wool right out.

Pretty good score I think.
>>
>>16677002
no nigga, i'm suggesting to just take a complete ranchero and just frame swap.
the interior will probably swap in as well.
Rancheros were just ute torinos at one point anyway but they're so much cheaper.
Or just drive a Ranchero if you want a Torino.

Anyway $1200 for that shit is inexcusable but it's not the worst i've seen.
>>
>>16677020
Ignition or cam timing?
>>
>>16677029
Do Torinos and rancheros and have the same wheelbase? And are they bof? I thought the Torino was unibody but I could be wrong. Also interior isn't the same, ones got a back seat, the doors are probably different and whatnot.

>>16677024
That thing is clean. Nice buy.
>>
>>16677035
I'm thinking it's cam with how they emphasized how important it was, could be ignition.

The symptom they told me was how it would start up from cold whenever it feels like it; the moment you turn the key or takes more than a second. Then it'll idle at 2k until it warms up.

I dunno, Rancheros were based on many body styles including the Torino but i can't be bothered to actually look up if they can fit together.
>>

My experience is with my 71, they have a shit load of interchangeable parts, not sure about the doors. The Torino is a unibody, yes. Still, that 1200 guy that I posted is utter bullshit.

Edelbrock is based in commiefornia. I try to stick to Holley-owned shit because they're local (Bowling Green, KY).
Anyways, that list of parts:
>Holley 850 double pumper
>Weiand Team G high-rise
>Dart Iron Eagle Platinum heads
>"Roller rockers" (Gonna pull the valve covers and check 'em out soon)
>COMP Xtreme Energy 294/306 adv, .519/523 lift
>KB pistons, i-beam rods
>Long tube headers (no idea on the brand)
>MSD 6al box
>MSD Pro Billet distributor
>MSD Blaster 2 coil
It's also got a B&M Holeshot 300 and a brand new B&M ratchet shifter.

I replaced the alternator, but the battery is still draining. It was just a shitty 55 amp from O'reilly's. Could all that MSD ignition shit be pulling too much power for it? What other areas should I look at?

I also wanna find some nice wheels for it. Anyone have suggestions?

>>
>>16687386

>>16688055
I went with Edelbrock purely because of the recommended plug and play driveability.

Ideally, down the road I'm going with an fitech throttle body fuel injection system or something similar.

Also that's a lot of good parts. Huge much was the whole car?
>>
>>16688029
There is literally nothing you can do to get better Mpg in that, other than drive like a grandma or putting an expensive EFI system on it
>>
>>16688029
The Motorcraft 4350 is a pile of junk. Calibrated too lean to try and meet emissions and there's almost nothing you can do about it. The accelerator pump shot is inadequate to begin with and any age at all reduces it making for stumbles on accel exacerbated by the lean calibration. The castings are weak and warp resulting in internal air leakage and persistent fuel seepage from the top gasket. Machining passage plugs in the area of the fuel filter frequently leak. The list goes on and on. Any aftermarket carb will need a minor amount of fabrication and definitely tuning (jets, pump shot, choke) that takes time for best performance but they will run ok out of the box.

Personally unless you just like tinkering for the sake of tinkering I'd just leave the pos Motorcraft unless it's being a problem and just enjoy the car. As for mpg, beyond making sure the car runs like it should there's nothing you can do that won't cost way more to accomplish than you'd get from any increase in mpg that you could reasonably expect to occur.

tl;dr just drive it!
>>
>>16688275
Can confirm. That toilet bowl of a carb is on my 68 Lincoln. Rebuilt it a while ago and somehow the top plate warped, now it leaks fuel like a siv when it's warmed up. The car runs fine with it though, but I do need to replace it sometime

>>
>>16688309
This is true. All things considered though, if you're like me and planning to keep the vehicle forever, getting the 600hp EFI kit with this adapter allows you to run a stock mechanical fuel pump and EFI without needing a return line. It's pretty ingenious.

when inserting a new fuel sending unit, the spongy bit goes down towards the bottom of the tank right?

>>
>>16688321
I didn't finish that thought.

If you're going to keep the car for a long period of time, your ROI is increased with fuel savings, reduction of aggravated headaches, reduction in maintenance and being able to tell Billy Bob at the cars and coffee that dat dere hot rod got one of them fancy shmancy fuel injection units

>>
https://youtu.be/7TfpUB1lIGU

So it's making that weird popping tone that happens when a carb is running lean as shit which corresponds with two things
A: It's heating up like it was stuck in a wood stove
B: There is a major exhaust leak.

It also will not stay running unless the pedal is in the exact right spot, any more or less and it tries to die.

Oh well, it runs now.
