Hey anon, cool progress on the lincoln. Out of curiosity, what is your budget and timeline for it? I'd like to get a car in mediocre condition and work on it, but I have no idea of the budget and time constraints I have.
>>
>>16694027

2+2 are garbage desu senpai. Heavy af and the motor feels anemic and sluggish. Good to cop if it has a good long block, starter, intake manifold, etc.
>>
>>16694027
Let me know about the wire wheels. I want to find a set of 15s with a decent offset.
>>
>>16694252
I'm going for as cheap as possible. I bought it for the 9" disc brake rear end and 460 for my maverick, but I didn't want to scrap the lincoln afterwards. That's why I'm going to use chunks of crash dented hood from my brother's caprice to patch the roof. I'm going to buy a cheap 305 and 700r4 for it, and put the 8.8" rear end from the maverick in there, Both rear ends only have a very small track difference so they should bolt up fine.

I also don't really have a timeline, because I have three other projects going on, My galaxie, my maverick, and my honda goldwing...

I finally defeated the hubcap jew! It turns out that when Excalibur contracted Dayton to make the hubcaps for them in the 1970s; they literally took a Chevrolet wire wheel and slapped an Excalibur decal over the stamping that said "Chevrolet" so they didn't have to create a separate product. As such, I just bought a replacement set of FACTORY CORRECT hubcaps for $50.00

280Zs are alright, you'll want to change the bumpers since those things are stupid heavy and maybe the FI depending on condition.

280ZXs are the ones to avoid, overweight boulevard cruisers with ruined looks. The 280Z itself is still the same S30 body as the 240Z, but with thicker steel, so stronger and more rust resistant body. Does mean it's heavier, but they're still fun

>>
guys, what's your checklist for potentially buying a classic car? I know to look for the big things like rust, but what else do you consider?
>>
>>16694766
Vg30 isn't great but it's a stout motor and there's parts like literally everywhere. How hard would a vg30dett swap be?
>>
>>16694594
I've owned all except z32 and beyond. 280zx is also fine and the FI system is more refined than the "mechanical" injection of the 280z. I love the 240z the most, obviously, but they are getting harder and harder to find for a reasonable price.
>>
>>16694771
That's pure Kek. I love that first gen wing. There's a reason it was the "King" of the ujm. Such a badass, big bike.

>>16694777
Rust, make sure when checking it out you do a start from stone cold, run it through the gears and do some hard braking. Also, if you can, get under it and look at all the rubber. See if the shocks are leaking oil, brake pad health, and make sure that all the lights and electric is working.

see if the motor runs and if it sounds healthy. if it does run make sure the trans shits decently enough. Check the floor pans for rust, check the little things like lights(dash lights as well), blinkers.. etc. The little things start to add up quick.

Check the fluids, make sure the oil is oil and not a milkshake. Check to make sure the coolant isn't brown or anything, Smell both the motor and transmission fluid to make sure it's not burnt.

pass on any cars with a disassembled motor unless you planned on rebuilding it anyway / swapping it. if someone took it apart it usually means there was something wrong with it and the seller doesn't want to disclose that info.
>>
>>16694784
Aye, was looking at a 280Z before as a potential project. FI is a bloody bird's nest there. Would much rather have the traditional SU style carbs.

280ZX would be a neat GT car, as would many of the later Z cars, but they lost a lot of the light sporty feel sadly, not to mention the styling went downhill (or maybe I'm just a 70s boomer at heart lol)
>>
>>16694834
I genuinely don't want a single z made after z32 other than a nismo 350z but even then, not really
>>
>>16694800
>>16694810

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Let me ask you this, would you rather buy a car that's a rolling chassis but the body and frame are in tip top shape? Or a whole car (i.e. engine & tranny) but needs body work (e.g. rust holes on body). So I guess that'd boil down to if you had to choose a part of the car to work/spend money on, what would it be?
>>
>>16694780
That's true, I'm just obsessed with the sound of a nice I6 coupled with a stainless exhaust system...

Haven't looked into it too much, but I believe they're fairly similar. Probably need some bodywork mods to fit though
>>
>>16694850
Depends on the car. You'd kill yourself in frustration getting mint body parts for a 69 Torino fastback, yet you can literally build a new 69 mustang from a catalogue.
>>
>>16694850
If the engine and tranny are in pristine condition and wouldn't require ANY work in the foreseeable future besides basic maintenance, I'd probably go with that. I really don't mind body work at all, It's something i can do at home with my welder, and some bondo. Building engines and transmissions on the other hand gets damn expensive damn quick.
>>
>>16694766

300zr wasn't an I6 those came with the vg30de, the 200zr was I6 with the rb20.
>>
>>16694863
Best sounding i6 I've ever heard was a c10 skyline with a l28 bored out to 3.1l with your mikunis, a wicked cam and a straight through exhaust with equal length spaghetti headers. My god, I nutted when he started it up.
>>
>>16694850
In theory, mechanicals are a lot less of a pain to deal with. Realistically, you probably want to drive the car, not spend half a year sourcing bits and installing, plus if anyone sells you a rust free classic, chances are he also has a bridge to sell
>>
>>16692310
>Blog about electrical gremlins
lol where to begin...

The wipers randomly turn on by themselves when the relay is in place. They stay off when relay is removed, but then the intermittent setting doesn't work. No change after replacing relay.

The passenger side window switch works on the drivers door but not on the passengers door.

The turn signals sometimes self-cancel after completing a turn, but usually don't.

The fuel gauge is stuck on E, the oil pressure guage is usually pegged to the max, but sometimes reads normally, and the speedometer needle swings wildly below 40 mph.

The backlighting for the speedometer doesn't work so I don't know how fast I'm going at night. One time I hit a bump and it turned on, but it hasn't worked since.

Some of the speakers occasionally decide not to work and when they do the volume fluctuates.

The rear defroster doesn't work

When the A/C is turned on you can hear the blower running, but no air comes out of any of the vents. Air blows fine when the heater is on.

Honestly I'm just glad the car starts and drives as well as it does. I plan on repairing most of these issues, but I consider them to be pretty minor at this point.
>>
>>16694881

>>
>>16694876

>>
>>16694884
Yeah those motors are half the reason why I want a S30. Done right, they're perfect. Had the chance to drive a 260 late last year, man the engine just sung and have that fantastic lift off rumble. Regret not buying that car so much now
>>
>>16694926
Well, they're everywhere. I'd like one, but I'd rather have something like a big six BMW e28. Still, huge resurrect for the s30, badass platform and cool cars.
>>
>>16694934
Maybe in the US, certainly not over here. I wish they were everywhere...

I was thinking of getting a nice E30 with a I6 for some fun on the cheap, but I'm a bit of a dreamer with carbs and classic dials and interiors from the 70s haha
>>

Original carbs can be a pain unless you live in stable climate or just really like tuning them. The FI system is actually pretty great as far as 80s cars go. Yeah with the 280zx it got even longer but I still like the way the look. I don't like the 300zx at all comparatively. It just doesn't feel like a Z car to me. Every car after 280zx should have been called something different. They should have just stuck to the straight 6 rwd and light as possible formula. Would have been like some of the BMWs but not as overly complicated etc.
>>
>>16695362
Hmm I've been running a car with twin SUs throughout the year and they seem to function well, mind you it is very mild here in terms of changes in climate. In general SUs tend to be easily tuned and do a pretty good job of staying in tune though.

Yeah they screwed up when they went for the luxury market, but it's understandable. The American market wanted it, and that drowned out everyone else. They did better doing luxury GT cars than they probably would have in purebred sports cars desu

Just got back from looking at the Riviera and 280z.The 71 Riviera has rusted out floor, back window is rusted out, trunk rusted out, and fenders are rusted at the bottom. Windshield is cracked too.
Datsun is in better shape but fenders are rusted at the bottom and rockers are rusted. It a 5 speed and has an extra 5 speed trans to to with it. Supposedly had engine rebuilt 6k miles ago but has sat for several years.
Guy wants $1600 for both. With as much rust as there is on the Riviera, I can only use the roof, front and back bumpers, and front grill to all use on my 72 Riviera. I still have to get floor pans for mine.
I could part out the 71 and the 280, and probably get my money back, but I just don't know if its worth my time.
I know the 5 speeds in the 280's are supposedly valuable, but not sure if they're good.
What's /ccg/'s opinion?
>>
>>16695485

I didn't take any pictures. I didn't lift the carpet to look at the floors but with the way the rockers were rusted and fenders were rusty, I assume the floor is rusty too. The interior was all there and intact, but was moldy/mildew. Much better shape than the Riviera, but still not great.

Body damages like scrapes and minor dents don't seem like much but they add up quickly. It's amazing how many unrestored classic cars have some sort of damage on almost every panel. With trim you want to make sure it's all there and in good shape even if you've got to lay out and count each piece. Unless it's something ridiculously popular like a Mustang, trim is frequently unavailable short of buying another car for parts. Same with glass. Particularly side and rear glass.

It's a goofy clashing mess in the best case scenario. Though more likely done because the guy can't work metal and as such can't do the job right.

I actually find metal working easier. There's no grain to try and match up. The metal doesn't split if you're too rough with it, and it's alot easier to fill holes and valleys in metal than it is wood.

should have gave it a pass with high grit sandpaper and wood conditioner before the stain was applied,it wood (lel) have made it look more even.

what did you use to apply it?

you should also have applied the stain in multiple light coats, looks like you just poured in some spots and smeared it on with a rag

Use a black foam wedge brush to apply and multiple clean cotton rags to wipe away excess next time

>>
>>16702672
Noice. Just know you'll need to run either a fuel system with an electric system with a fuel return, or the fitech part that you run your regular fuel pump to that pressurized the line into the TBI unit to around 50-60 psi
>>
>>16702715
That's more labor intensive, and odds are the Lincoln already has highway gears
>>
>>16702715
Jeez I can't spell apparently

>>16702737
True that. Wouldn't be worth the 2-3 mpg gain really after the cost. The C-6 is a great trans anyway
>>
So the new disc brakes on my car...the right one sometimes makes this scraping noise when braking hard. It's usually when in the last few seconds of a stop. It happens often if wheel is turned right, occasionally if turned strait, and never if turned left. What do I need to look for? It also wants to turn right when braking hard; it won't jerk the wheel from hand, but it's slightly noticeable.
>>
>>16702765
It depends, the AOD is a decent trans, but it's also a lot weaker. You also have to redo kickdown linkages as well as change the driveshaft.

Personally, if I had all the money to blow, I'd stick with the 4.11s in my ferd and just throw a gear vendors unit in there.
>>
>>16702777
I'm not sure about any of the other stuff, but I'd rebleed the left side brake if it pulls to the right. There may be air in the lines and the right brake is engaging harder/sooner than the left one.

maybe check to see if everything is nice and tight on both sides for the other issues?

I see it as something nice to have lying around also. If I get rid of the Lincoln, I'll just put on the old carb and keep my EFI for something better. Or if I get the funds for a nicer landboat, (I really want a 1959 Buick lesabre) then I have this nice EFI system to throw onto it. It'll slowly and barely pay itself off over the years anyways.

I have a large sum of cash in my bank anyways and my current carb on my 460 is in pretty bad shape too.. So Im just shelling out the extra penny for something nice

I can't wait till my 460 needs to be rebuilt so I can take it out and have my way with it, and I'll already have my EFI ready to go afterwards

>>16705102
not really, unless there was something severely wrong with the points that the engine was running correctly.
>>
>>16704582
Pre-70's cudas were the performance car if you didn't want a Valiant.
When the change happened and Plymouth no longer had a sporty coupe they made the Duster.
The Barracuda became a pricey sports car, and one many considered ugly, just like Challengers.
And that's why E-bodies are so expensive.
>>
>>16704983
Look for rust on the bottom of the trunk pan.
Look for cracks on the windshield wiper seals.
Look at the fusebox, if fuse 6 is pulled the dash is about fuk'd
If it's automatic look at the kickdown lever, it'll be a piece of steel attached to the throttle arm and runs back to the gearbox.
Push the throttle all the way open, then try to push the kickdown back farther.
If it goes no further you're good.
If it goes further then the gearbox is on its way to being broken.
pull up the carpet and look at the floorpans.

If your replacing a single point distributor, you might notice an improvement at high rpm, as most singles weren't high performance pieces and tend to break up at higher speeds.

Lincoln or Chrysler; for Chrysler, anything 1966 through 1978 can have the 440. That's the best V8 they made for modification and reliable use.

Lincolns from 1970 through 1979; particularly the late '70s, as the 400 or 460 are great platforms.

Cadillac has a slew of special snowflake engines that have next to nothing options.

the majority of cleveland parts can bolt right up. I believe heads can with minor modifications. Dizzys, cams, intake manifolds with minor mods. The modified blocks are essentially cleveland blocks with a BBF bellhousing with a few small differences here and there. and in the 400's case, inbetween small block and big block displacement territory.
>>
>>16704551
do it

I have a 78 mr2 as my second car.

Theyre fun but awfully hard to work on since you need to get under the car for almost everything you want to do to it

I give you my thumbs up.

Just remember that rain will kill you going around the corner even SLIGHTLY too fast and to find out what snap oversteer is like in an empty parking lot rather than an intersection

>>
>>16711736
Thanks Dracula, appreciate it. Both of those cars are great and either looks like they'd be fun to have. I'll be honest, I'm more biased toward the Lincoln as that's the car my mother had when I was kid (so many fun memories) so I'd love to have it. Unfortunately, red interior just looks so gaudy that I want to stay away from it. However, the 4200 asking price is very attractive (right now my budget is 4000, so if I wanted that Lincoln I'm sure I could haggle him down). I could raise my budget another grand, but I'd be shopping around late April or the start of May at that point, and I don't know if many more old boats will pop up at that time.

Also, you seem very knowledgeable; are there any major issues I should look out for with these big cars?

Thanks!

Gladly. The red interior on the Lincoln seems garish, but it's so period and fun that it enhances the experience. Don't write off one because of an odd color.

The market fluctuates; but, they've been on the rise and they will go up by a grand or two as the weather gets nice.

For issues, electronics suck to repair. Switches are expensive, but can be cleaned. Trim bits are expensive to replace, so buy the most solid, complete car you can.

I definitely think assault cars should be banned.

But no, our licensing system is nothing to slightly difficult. But we don't have a national system for road laws our licensing so it's ridiculous to ask for a higher level of difficulty and thus rigorousness.

Like fuck man, how about just testing people more often do they don't forget.

Those are for gun shows, where the majority of private sellers go to sell their guns. If you're a dealer at a gun show you still have to have the person file a 4473 and background check if you wanna sell a gun.

The gun show """"""loophole"""""" isn't really a loophole. It was just given that name to make it sound like people are abusing the shit out of the laws set in place for background checks and all that. Nope. It's just normal private citizens selling guns to other normal private citizens. BTW, you have a duty to not knowingly sell to criminals, and you get to discriminate as to who you sell to or not. if someone you sold the gun to used it in a crime and the police find out you sold it to the criminal knowingly then you goin' to jail, nigga.

I feel like you'd be a conservative if only you had more information about things. But I guess that's what democrats rely on, low information voters.

enough gun shit now, let's talk about classic cars.

I'm liberal, but I'm more of a left leaning centrist. I think we should have welfare, but we should make it terrible and incentivise people to get a job because of how much it sucks. We should have food stamps, but the food should be dirt cheap, taste like ass, and make people want a job. We shouldn't just give people this stuff, but make them work or something for it or incentivise them getting a job and stop leaching off the system.

Not necessarily. I'm this era, the difference was carrying capacity. The f250 has a much heavier, thicker frame to support a higher payload and towing capacity. Then mine has a much stronger axle with higher gears. Mine has a Dana 60 rear axle as opposed to a 9 inch.

Engines are pretty much the same, but mine also has bigger drum brakes, and a much much heavier duty rear leaf spring pack. Also I think I've got a thicker more stout bumper in the back for hitching things up

>>

It might be worth it. I get, roughly, a 5 MPG increase on the highway with premium; more with nonreformulated.

I'd also advise premium in the event that the car sits for longer periods; as premium degrades into regular after enough time.
>>
>>16717501
It wasn't my best. Certainly not my worst

i have a dilema

Ive built my engine, assembled it and put it into the car. I bought it off a friend of a friend for $50. It has a thiccc cam which is why i bought it for cheap, but im still not sure what the specs are on the cam

Anyway, ive discovered its a solid cam and lifter set when i got it running and had hydraulic rocker arms attached, it sounded like the valve train was being raped from having the wrong rockers

I have two options, should i replace the solid cam with an equivalent hydraulic cam + lifters or should i buy some yella terra adjustable roller rockers to slap on and keep the solid cam? im at a crossroads where i have the engine re-disassembled to go either way
>>
>>16721171
if you're not going for any sort of performance build, I would go with a hydraulic cam. It cuts out alot of maintenance with adjusting the valve lash.

Wiper circuit possibly fused together with another one?
Turn signal issue sounds like the plastic flap within the multi function switch is broken/wearing out.
Rest of the issues could be so many things, it would require serious troubleshooting.
