not mine, it has no torque. probably on the big 1200s it'll stand you up in a corner if you give it a sudden jerk, but thats poor technique regardless.

>>16568892
they're pretty beefy, they'll stand up to a lot. they arent die cast aluminum like you see on modern engines that just break in half with impact. i've heard of people breaking them in spectacular crashes, but usually the worst that happens is a hole wearing in the easily replaced and inexpensive valve cover. honestly a $35 valve cover is so much easier and cheaper than any bodywork on any bike, or even a handlebar.

Caliper is same one they use on an Aprilia SXV, or Husaberg, and even KTM.

Beringer designed caliper made by FTE.

Yes, I have a Brembo R6 Master cylinder.

It's on a 2004 WR450.

All plastics including tank will be black, gonna dye the tank, already did some samples, works awesome.

I should have kept the Berg FS550 and put a WR450 motor in it when it blew up again.

But I don't want to do a motor swap, I'm not that ambitious, and I made a profit on rebuilding the Berg anyway.

Do you chain up your bikes to those posts overnight? Is that what that black cable is? Also do you chain up any expensive bikes eg over 10k? Ever had any stolen?

The basic beginner bike criteria are

$2k or less
Fuel injected
Engine around or under 500cc, should only have more than two cyllinders if they aren't all in a straight line
Upright or semi-upright riding posture
Half-faired
Know how to ride before buying, test ride for at least 30 minutes over varying road conditions, make sure it's dead cold before you start it
>>
>>16569647
Say, if I only spend $1k, wouldn't I end up with a really shitty bike that would be even more dangerous?
>>

No, you would end up with an okay bike and a lot of time spent in the garage.

What is the purpose of knee dragging. I get it, then your lean angle gets to a certain point your knee is close to the ground, but what is the functional purpose of hanging your knee out to touch the ground as opposed to hanging off the bike the same amount but not sticking your knee out?

Does your knee actually provide any support for the bike in a corner that improves the mid-turn handling? I can't see how this would be the case.

if you are a biologically normal human being your knee will naturally stick out. it's not to counterbalance the motorcycle, it's a byproduct of the awkward posture you take bow-armed on the bars with your other leg holding you onto the tank.
>>
>>16569952
This doesn't make sense. Sliding off the seat in the direction of the corner doesn't force your kneed out. in this position your knee actually has more inward mobility than just sitting square on the seat. Sticking your knee out would be a conscious decision.

I don't see the purpose in doing so as opposed to keeping it tucked in gripping the tank opposite your outside leg.

You aren't sliding off the seat in a corner, centrifugal force is pushing you into the seat. Knee dragging is not only a gauge of lean angle, but helps keep your torso square with the centerline of the bike (so you're not crossed up). It would be awkward sticking both knees into the tank while trying to lean into the corner.

>You aren't sliding off the seat in a corner
You are. proper body position dicatates you slide off the seat towards the inside of the corner.

>centrifugal force is pushing you into the seat.this has nothing to do with anything.

>Knee dragging is not only a gauge of lean angle
This also doesn't make sense. You're not meant to gauge your lean angle. Your lean angle is whatever is necessary to make the turn.

>helps keep your torso square with the centerline of the bike
Your are to lean your upper torso towards the inside of the turn along with moving off the seat with your lower torso. Leaning into the turn allows lower bike lean angles for a given speed and thus higher overall speed in a turn before running out of ground clearance due to lean angle.
>>
>>16569977

The bike in pic is my R1100R. While riding, it doesn´t have any effects. I´m 230lbs, so I don´t know how it feels under lighter riders. Only time when I notice the "jerk to the left" is when I´m at the stop lights and pump the throttle and even then the effect is minor. All in all, the BMW feels really different from other bikes that I have riden, in a good way. It´s really solid and steady bike and no diving during braking.

>>16569941
It serves a couple of purposes. Firstly, it helps act as a physical gauge of how much lean angle you have left, which helps you when trying to take turns sharper and faster. (Without it you've got to rely solely on your vision, which shouldn't even be pointed anywhere near the bike at that point). It also helps you maintain a near-constant degree through longer corners, meaning that you're keeping any unintended steering input to a minimum and helping stability.

Also (and really only useful for experienced track riders, and even then not foolproof at all), you can use your knee to save the bike when the front tucks or the rear starts to slide out more than intended. This is mostly an instinctual, reflexive action, not something that 99% of riders will do consciously.
>>
>>16570290
Also, before anyone points it out: Yes, of course you corner at whatever lean angle is required, but having an extra point of contact at the knee gives you an additional source of feedback, enabling you to reach and maintain the appropriate angle easier.

What exactly is bad about a torquey 100+whp naked that weighs 400lbs and cheap?

Sure the suspension isn't superbike stronk but it's not meant to be.
>>
>>16570340
The engine is literally the only positive and I don't actually like it at all.

Light doesn't really matter when it handles poorly.

I mean if it's not the best handling bike, not comfortable for long journeys, what's the point?

It basically only exists to commute on and occasionally squeeze the throttle to "feel the torque bro" which is just not my type of riding.

Compare it value wise to a bike like the gsx-s1000 that handles great and has brembos and nice suspension and what not and it just makes no sense to me.
>>
>>16570347
really the suspension can be sorted out for the most part for less than $70 with a ZX-6R or ZX-10R shock.

If you're one of those guys that leaves his bike completely stock I guess it's a bad bike. But a FZ09 with a revalved front end (couple hundred) and a ZX shocked rear (like $60) is significantly lighter than the Suzuki and probably handles better.

>>
>>16570376
Really you're comparing two different types of bikes at two different price points.

The FZ is meant to be a torquey comfortable commuter on the cheap that you can hoon when you want.

The GSXS1k is meant to be a naked take on a superbike. Literally has the motor out of the K5 gixxer 1k.

The FZ really is more comparable to what the GSXS750 is both in performance and in price.

They'll be shopping the GSX750, FZ09, Z900, etc.
In that company the FZ09 takes the cake.

People try to compare the FZ09 to bikes above it's class (read: liter-class nakeds) then say it's bad. Really that tells you how good it is because it stands out so far ahead of the bikes actually in it's class.

Hey I got a question for you guys, are motorcycle exhaust pipes/slipons specifically for that model? For instance could I take a better looking pipe from a totally different model/class of motorcycle, make custom brackets and fit it to another bike with no loss to performance/any issues?
>>
>>16570487
Yes and no.

Used to be slip on mufflers would easily fit one bike to the next as far as pipe mounting with springs as long as the pipe diameter was the same. Slip ones were just straight mufflers that slipped on the straight section at the end of the mid pipe and was held on with springs and a support at the rear passenger peg.

Now I've found with modern bikes the slip on incorporates part of the mid-pipe and associated bends and is typically form fitted to the underside/side of the motorcycle. This means one bike will have a different bend to the next and will not be an easy direct fit even if pipe diameter is the same.

A lot of time the bends will be 'similar' so you could probably eyeball a slip on and it's bend to figure out if it would be close to your bike but you'll still probably need some form of modification to make it fit right, and then make the upper mount for the exhaust hanger offf the rearset or passenger peg bracket.

tl;dr used to be pretty easy with older straight can bikes, new bikes not so much with their fancy new form fitting "gp style" exhausts.

pic related.
an 'old style' side exhaust. See how the muffler slis on at a straight section of pipe? This setup is easily adapted from bike to bike with same diameter exhaust pipes.

>>16570522
>>16570528
Hmm alright, I'll keep that in mind, try an figure out what exactly is in the doner pipe and my bikes current pipe. Thanks for the info though, much appreciated

Also nice picture

Here is a bike with a newer "gp style" exhaust.
Notice the mid pipe exist at an angle and the actual slip on is the muffler and the pipe just before it that bends and meets up with the angled midpipe exit.
>>
>>16570534
Ahh right yeah I get what you mean, I don't think a bend would matter too much in this project, I'd already have to fab a custom mount/part of the pipe anyway

My bike snuggles the slip on just under the swing arm is canted, the hanger is also canted to mount flush with the rearset mount. no real way to adapt that to another bike without it having a very similar setup or just completely redoing the mounting setup.

More powerful in peak power and significantly more powerful throughout the rev range.

>subjective, literally irrelevant to the discussion

Objectively hideous bug eyed garbage with horrid (lack of) proportions.

>not by much, and it is worth it

Not at all worth it.

>nice meme
It's not a meme that britbongs have a long and illustrious history of designing mechanical garbage that can't hold itself together. Triumph is no exception.

>More powerful in peak power
By ~10hp. Again, not all that much.
The only reason why people say the engine is awesome is because of the short gearing strapped to it. Not saying that's a bad thing, but you can get a similar effect effect by riding the STR in a lower gear.

>Objectively hideous
That isn't a thing.

>long and illustrious history of designing mechanical garbage
That is irrelevant, as the STR is not a historic bike.
Point me to a dealbreaking mechanical shortcoming of the bike and I will stand corrected. The R/R issue has been fixed on the 2013+ models.

>Not at all worth it.
What isn't worth it about better suspension, better brakes and better fuelling?

Btw, the 2017 Street Triple R makes 116hp.
