Depends on how much time you have to ride. Back when I was only working 40 hours a week I could have had more easily and have plenty of time to ride them all. Now though I have a hard enough time finding time to ride and maintain the 4 I have.

Even so I still want a tourer and maybe a sport bike, but I don't want to pay insurance or registration for two more bikes

>>16519544
chances are high, so when you see any possible threat you need to.

1. Set up the brakes/slow down, you already do this so this is good.

2. Buffer, if the car is pulling out from your right, then move all the way to the left of your lane, this puts physical space between you and the car and also improves your likelihood of being seen.

3. think of an escape strategy, can you brake in time if they pull out? can you dip into the middle of the road or the wrong side of the road if you need to avoid the car pulling out? are there any additional hazards etc.

If you do all this you can basically put yourself in a space where even if the car pulls out you are fine.

>>
>>16519699

>>
>>16519691
Rear wheel skidding isn't great, it means you're giving too much rear brake and if you skid too far out then regain traction you can highside. A little skid won't kill you but it's a bad habit to get into.

You actually need to let off the rear brake as you tighten up on the front, because the harder you brake the lighter the rear wheel gets and the less brake you can put on it.

the rear brake's importance during stopping is greatly overstated to beginners for some reason, more than 90% of your power will come from the front brake and usually the rear can be handled with engine braking, I know track braking isn't emergency braking but the engine braking on my bike is actually stronger than I'd want sometimes and causes the rear to move a bit.

Personally Imo don't bother with it because when that adrenaline is high in an emergency situation you might lock it up and that can cause more problems than it solves.
>>
>>16519760
You do know that your front brake is like 90% of your braking power?

I very seldom use the rear brake.

Typically my rear wheel is slipping and weaving with downshifts alone.

I use it for controlling my speed with cruise control on and hands off the bars more than anything.

what sports bikes look like is irrelevant, people buy whichever one goes the fastest then decide if it looks good later.

When the s1000rr was announced people thought it would flop and said it was too ugly to buy, when people found out it was faster than god suddenly people liked how they looked.

What are your priorities?
Gas mileage? Handling? Speed? Looks? Upright ergos? New or used? what are the typical speeds during your commute?

This is far to vague a question for a reasonable answer and is mostly up to opinion.

Some people like commuting on gold wings, others harleys, others the fastest literbike or 60 they can afford.

A reasonable and common choice is a 500-1000cc sport standard of whichever variety you prefer.

Only in relation to suzukishit.

It's a 250 that makes a bit fewer horsepower than a Suzuki 400 while being more reliable, having less maintenance, and being lighter, better handling, and more capable on a trail.

And it can do practically everything a Suzuki 650 can do with better economy, better handling, less maintenance, and less weight.

sport bikes can be had but if you drop them they're expensive to fix.

Getting a similar performance sport standard (naked) is probably a better idea.

650 twins are recommended so much for a reason. They're pretty much ideal when it comes to powerful enough for some fun but controllable enough for a new rider.
>>
>>16520256
Ive always been interested in the naked bikes, which ones would you recommend that fit my budget (getting it off craigslist)

Anyone else think sport bikes are a meme? They are too uncomfortable to do any actual adventuring with and even the 600s are now on par with elite sport tourers/touring bikes in terms of speed and acceleration. The only saving grace is the absurdity of liter bikes but pretty much anything below that is worthless.

Good thing they're not adventure bikes then, huh?

>the 600s are now on par with elite sport tourers/touring bikes in terms of speed and acceleration.
There probably are a few sport touring bikes that can keep up with a modern 600 in the 1/4. But they handle nowhere near as well. If all you care about is being the fastest thing in a straight line, you don't buy a 600, plain and simple.

But it is. Cruisers tend to be "safer" because people don't tend to hoon them. However with the same rider on both bikes in the same circumstances and ridden the same way, the sportbike should theoretically be a little safer because of its greater braking/accelerating/cornering capabilities.

No, its better to spend your days watching other people live life from the safety of your couch in front of the TV.
>>
>>16520788
would you like to ever get on a road that leaves the city?
would you like to have enough power to beat a bicycle?
>>
>>16520780
i don't speak english well enough to describe thoses kind of sensation, i'd say you just test drive something like a Streetfighter 1098 and then go back on a Z1000 and you'll see by yourself.

And i don't shit on japanese bike, they're amazing in term of relability and performance, they're just not for me.

>>16520788
i bought one for my gf 2.5 years ago, it's reaaally fun, easy to ride, lightweight, good mpg, you have maaaany parts to tune your grom, cheap maintenance etc

>>16520796
appart from the FZ10, thoses are old bikes, i'm not really into pre 2000 bikes...

In term of esthetic ? Maybe, but when it come for the handling it's just night and day, never was a huge fan of it, for me the best generation is the 2010-2012 in term of look, performance etc.

Thanks for all the tips, and especially the reasoning behind it. Definitely going to practice some quick stops next time I'm out. Seems like a very worthwhile exercise. Haven't done it since the course.

Adding the what they said, you don't want to practice until you 'get it down'
You want to practice until it's muscle memory. Your body needs to emergency brake without conscious input.
>>
>>16520694
>>16520675
When did you get that?

also how much do you make? :^)
>>
>>16520925
Mhm I've been making a semi-conscious effort to apply less rear break, but I know what you mean. Good habits foster muscle memory so when you don't have time to think about it you react right.

>Motions over at his friend then leans back out the window

I should have bought the 600 I couldnt even outrun them till they gave up

Can someone please explain how to properly upshift from 2nd gear? Do I pull in clutch, shift up (with foot already pressing under it), and immediately stop throttle and release clutch? Or am I supposed to do the smooth action of slowly releasing the clutch while slowly giving it gas?

And I tried to get on the highway for the first time to day, and felt I could not go fast enough. I was in 5th gear going about 30, what am I doing wrong? And it STILL was at 5k RPM, which I know is a no-no, don't want to red line it...
>>
opinions on the XR400?

Also, whats it like to street an old ag bike? ive got a shitty old TS185 that i thrash, which im thinking about registering, but ive never tried to street drive a 2 stroke

groms are awesome if you never have to get on the highway. which i have to do since i commute, otherwise i would have gotten one.

>Put pressure on the bottom of the shift lever
>Not a lot just enough
>roll off and back on throttle smoothly but quick
Now you're in 3rd. Do that again until you reach you top gear. No clutch needed

Where to get good non-bike boots from? Do you go to one of those work safety equipment stores? All the normal shoe stores I've look at only sell shit boots that have no protection and are just meant to look like boots for a fashion purpose.
