Anyone have a rough idea of what I should be spending on gear as a new rider poorfag? Here's my personal rough breakdown, but not sure how good it is:

Helmet: $150

Jacket: $300

Pants: $120

Gloves: $60

Boots: $200

Total: $830

Keeping an eye on craigslist for stuff I can get used, but those are my "new" prices. Am I over/under spending anywhere?
>>
>>16484018
well if he's running his street tyres at 24 fucking psi for some extra grip then leaning barely at all it's a bloody waste isn't it? a bike with 43 hp doesn't need extra drive in a straight line, motards just wheelie anyway.

>Helmet: $150

you will probably hate this helmet for this price, maybe not, some people do some people don't. I wish I'd never bought cheaper helmets and just bought a shoei or arai or equivalent on day one, but I can see now wanting to drop that kind of money on a first helmet.

Just make sure all your gear fits well, try it on, do not buy sight unseen, get full length boots do not settle for anything less, and try and get as much leather and CE armour as possible.

If you have ANY doubts about the fit or a piece of gear do not buy it, we've all regretted a gear purchase in the past.

Buy closeout new gear if you can.
Also in my experience it's worth it to spend a bit more on gloves. I bought some $80 leather gloves and they started tearing and popping seams withing a few months, then were basically falling apart within a year.

However prices don't directly translate to better quality or protection so you can't accurately measure by that.

This jacket has excellent reviews and is cheap af. I would buy one myself if I wasn't a poorfag or didn't already have a leather jacket.
http://www.sportbiketrackgear.com/scorpion-sj2-leather-jacket/
>>
>>16484035
I'd probably spend less on a jacket and more on a helmet and gloves. you're gonna want a tinted visor, and nice gloves that fit well are important to protect your hands and also have a comfortable fit on the bars
>>
>>16484053
Yeah, although I'm planning on buying most stuff from Revzilla because no sales tax, I'm planning on trying everything at my local shop.

For boots, I was planning on Alpinestar SMX5 or SMX6, but I've seen some reviews that describe them as sport boots for "spirited/track riding". They're not overkill for general commuting are they?

they're not really, they're not all that stiff, don't have that tighter inner sole with ankle protection or a hinge of some type, not that well ventilated in comparison to track boots.

I guess you could say they're "sporty" but they're nowhere near track boots.
>>
>>16484035
>Helmet
If it has DOT and ECE 22.05, every buck past $100 you're paying for features, not protection. Check S.H.A.R.P., pick 4- and 5-star helmets, order from cheapest up.

>Jacket
A $100 textile jacket is good enough outside of track. Elbow, shoulder and back(!) protectors are a must, a smart thing to do is buy aftermarket protectors that fit the jacket, always almost better than the original ones.

>Pants
Same as above. Textile is enough, knee pads a must, hip pads a plus.

>Gloves
Leather with joint and palm(!) armor. Alpinestars has the nice "pinky-bridge" that may or may not protect your pinky in a crash. $50-$100 depending on preferences and local availability, Alpinestars SP-8 is a great glove for summer / warm climate use.

>Boots
$100 and up. Ankle protection is a must. If the basics are covered all extra dosh is features and comfort, not protection. Read user reviews. TCX is a great brand and not expensive.

You can buy everything other than helmets used without compromising your safety.
>>
>>16484146
They aren't high end track boots but the SMX series is one of the most popular boots at the average track day...
>>
>>16484146
There is always something.
Because of how good the protection for your ankles is on MX boots they can actually snap your knees for an example.
>>
>>16484153
i'd agree with this. most of this will be protective enough for an accident, while the main compromise will be style and comfort. cheaper products are likely ugly and heavy.
>>
>>16484155
or i guess the SMX plus is the version most people have at the track. i wear SMX but i think they're kinda old
>>
>>16484153
>order from cheapest up.

absolutely don't do this, go to a store and try them on, and buy the one that fits you best. the safest helmet won't do shit if it doesn't fit right. wear it for at least 5-10 mins around the store to make sure it's a good fit.
>>
>>16484187
100% this
A cheap helmet can offer better protection than the most highly rated and expensive helmet if it fits your head better.

I know, I have a pair and I wear them to the track. They're not really track boots though, they're just sort of all rounders with a "sporty" leaning to them. The SMX-5 in particular I'm referring to.

You can do anything in them, including walk around shopping centers and doing the daily routine and such but they're not as safe focused as real track boots. Ideally you'd want both, SMX-5/6 for just chilling and general riding and some supertechs or whatever for track days and twisties runs.

>>16484169
yeah but even track road boots aren't as stiff as MX boots.
>>
>>16484199
i dont know exactly what SMX version i have, but i never wear them around town, only wear them on track. they are pretty stiff and clunky
>>
>>16484187
>>16484193
"Order" as in "order the list on the SHARP website from cheapest to most expensive after only selecting 4- and 5-star helmets". Not "order" as in "order online". I would never order helmets online without trying.
>>
>>16484208
why don't you look down to your feet and let me know, if it's SMX plus that'd make sense because they're hinged. SMX-5 is basically sporty touring boots.

So buy the SR250 (I take it you already have one available?) and start modding, but also get a 90's something to actually ride around.

The secret to successful building is to control costs of the donor bike and parts, for example, a $300 runner and $100 parts bike is a great combo.

No.

Use a phosphoric acid preporation like pic related. The phosphoric acid converts the rust into an inert layer of ferric phosphate. The home depot stuff also contains chelating agents and detergents. It's the same formula as "naval jelly" just not in a gel.

I'm really excited to try the bosch lean angle sensitive ABS or ABS with different settings of intervention like the ducati and aprilia systems because i feel like that'd probably kick in far closer to the limit, I wouldn't have the cheap ABS they put on bikes like the ninja or grom within 10 feet of me though.

It can't hurt, because then you get immediate satisfaction and experience in riding that can give you an idea of what you want out of your next motorcycle. Your tastes might change a little once you've been riding, also.
And you get familiar with the parts of a motorcycle so you aren't clueless with a project bike in front of you.

My bike has the current Bosch setup, with the lean angle sensor. It's fantastic. When it kicks in, it feels like someone lightly tapping on the lever with a pencil, with no noticeable modulation at the wheel, it just doesn't slip. I can trail brake deep into corners with confidence.

I know the ABS on the old BMW's sucked, as my friends with abs-equipped oilheads have told me (and told me and told me.) I haven't tried any of the japanese ABS systems, so I can't say how they compare.

>If you cafe bob racer an sr250 we will hunt you down and pour gravel on every road you love.

But really, sr250 is a good learning bike. One of the motorcycle schools up near tacoma WA has a bunch of them (I'm told).

>low seat height means you can throw it around with your weight
>Very lightweight
>Is able (just) to go highway speeds (as in 60mph)
>65-70 miles per gallon

And the engine is fucking bulletproof. There's a reason yamaha took it and put it on the ag200 farm bikes mostly unmodified.

>this all assumes you know how to fix things and your bike isn't a rusty pile of dogshit.

whats the best way to learn to wheelie a 600cc sport bike?

i've always had dirt bikes and can wheelie them easy. mainly power wheelie on my 450s.

got my road license and started on a cbr500r but never really tried to wheelie as i was just interested in learning to corner through twisties.

now i have a gsxr 600 and want to learn to do simple wheelies. not balance point, just chasing wheelies.

whats the safest way to learn on a 600? clutching up in first or second?

any tips

>>
>>16485162
imo just start in 1st at lower RPMS, I mean if you can't wheelie it in 1st you really can't wheelie it period but I learned on a 650 where it was really fucking tough to pop in 2nd.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z1KK9wokDc

DS83 has actually quite a good tutorial on the subject maybe see if the answer for that is in there I can't help you there.

But it basically comes down to just practicing your clutch pop for an hour a week or so, and when you get discouraged or you feel like it's not working right, not giving up and coming back and trying again, because eventually the puzzle reveals itself and you'll be able to do it the same consistently.

I've never looped learning to wheelie and I've done sitting, stand up and shifting gears wheelies, it comes down to never outstripping your comfort zone by too much and trying to do wheelies better than you really can, if it doesn't feel right, don't fuckign do it, same with all motorcycling.

well you don't really want to snap the throttle on a road bike wheelie anyway, just gently roll it on and use the rear brake.

90% of bikes have a single bolt at the bottom of the engine that releases the oil unless gear box and engine oil are seperate in which case there will normally be two equally sized bolts side by side.

we get it you sat around on the internet researching every aspect of bike ownership, you have never actually done a single bit of maintenance on a bike though so stop trying to act like you have because it is fairly obvious that you have not when you try to make fun of others for not being able to unscrew a bolt when in reality no one is that dumb other than you.

In the future when we can genetically engineer animals we need to make polar bears that act like Labradors.

an rc wanted me to join. they made it sound like all they do is ride, but they don't, cause they sucked. and they had all these stupid rules and jobs you had to do, like a frat. even stuff like taking a ticket and a point on your license, or paying to bail people out. so just like a frat, it's like paying for friends, and in this case, a lot of money.

It sounds so damn stupid from any way you look at it.
Buddy of mine traded a good working kawasaki for a dyna glide so he could join some wanna be ha gang.
All he does now is bitch that his bike is always broke, they never go anywhere outside of a 80 mile (if that) radius, and gets pissy with me for having a full face.

I don't get it

What kind of power do they get out of race 600s? I know most production based liters make 220-230 and MotoGP bikes make 250+ but I never see what the 600s make.

I've seen figures of around 125-140 hp at the wheel for a fully race built 600 engine depending on the dyno.

Which would make sense for the around 180 mph top speed of that IOM TT bike.

Is filtering through cars unusual in murrica or what?
>>
>>16486057
Yeah, it's illegal everywhere except California here. Some cops luckily don't really care, but most will slap you with a nasty ticket for it if they catch you filtering.
>>
guy is so fucking cool

https://youtu.be/8KcsV6Gzir0
>>
>>16486073
But why? I fucking filter on my bicycle here, it's ridiculous to expect a scooter to stay behind a car, they wouldn't have a purpose like that.

Of course no one buys them in america if you can't even fucking filter through traffic.

Why aren't you murrican riders forcing your stupid government to adopt 21st century laws?
>>
Is letting a motorcycle or scooter outside a bad thing?

>Don't have garage.
>Only have a cover
>People tell me that a cover is also bad due to moisture

What the fuck do I do? My bike is now covered in snow.

I rode it yesterday and it was fine.
>>
>>16486084
I have no idea. It's really fucking stupid for a lot of reasons. I'm pretty sure there have been petitions before, but it ends up being a state by state thing with California being the only place that's got it actually legal now

Honestly, I just filter anyway. I live in Florida so when it's hot I absolutely refuse to sit in traffic. My cbr gets hot enough as it is, fuck that.
>>
>>16486101

>>16486096

>>
>>16486186
if you just want to change the oil and filter all you have to do is drain the old oil, remove the old filter, put a new filter on it, close the oil draining screw and then fill in the new oil.

>are inline fuel filters worth getting on a carbed bike?

Yes. Ancient mechanic here. Most SOLID fuel contamination comes from deterioration of steel fuel tanks over time, not from fuel at gas stations.

BTW you cannot know if your fuel is "quality" by the label unless it's aviation or race gas, but that's not a common issue.

I also use plastic inline automobile filters, some of which can be had in 90-degree versions. You can bring some fuel hose to match up. Pic related work pretty well.

Don't kink your hose and if you need hose, buy fuel injection hose (Gates, etc) because so-called "fuel line" that is not injection hose is garbage and deteriorates quickly. "Fuel injection style" hose clamps are nice too.

>>
>>16486266

>>16486267
It can't! It gets to 180 rather quick but takes forever to reach 220-230km/h, even with -2 on the rear sprocket. It does show indicated 280, which you could argue is cool tho.

Also I've uploaded some raw footage from a togay run from last summer. I'll spam it again on the next thread so hopefully we can have a fun time with all the BP and racing lines specialists chiming in.

you're returning to the center of the bike a lot when often there's another corner of the same direction about to come up and wasting energy and unsettling the bike because of that.
