is it normal for them to break about 2 in into the casing from where the adjuster ends. roughly around the bent part

>>
>>16486931
Its not opinion though. Hondas have dropped in reliability and have major issues with valves tightening. So bad you need to adjust them after nearly every ride.
Also honda has been lazy with bikes for a while. Nothing new and exciting. No crazy hp or light frames. No new innovations to speak of.

if its dry and not lubed it can happen.

cables are usually different by the bike. length and the shape of each end can play a part. they're usually about 30 bucks new, find the oem part number and use ebay

The 1st gen ones apparently have an issue where they eat SPUs, and then MV outsourced the OEM SPU which was more reliable to a Chinese company that makes shitty ones that break more often and cost the same amount, so stay away from those.

The newer ones supposedly got most of the issues worked out and are really nice, though. Personally I just know my generation F4's issues since I preemptively fixed most of them.

Still waiting to get enough cash so I can swap the ECU over to 32-bit functionality and redo the wiring harness.

The original cam problems have been attributed to poor oiling, improper heat treating of the cams, poor quality metal in the cams, and a variety of other things. I don't think even Honda nailed down exactly what it was, but it did happen to a lot of bikes.

Even without the cam failures, using low pressure unfiltered oil off the transmission gallery to oil the particularly delicate cam setup (for that time) is a bad idea. I modded mine with a setup that uses high pressure filtered oil instead and I've had no issues with close to 30k miles, but the bike was probably not going to develop issues anyway as it already had about 15k on it when I bought it.

Nah bro that's a common misconception. I'm not riding like I'm on an MX track so you can stretch the maintenance time out a bit. The only thing I don't slouch with is oil changes. I do the oil about every 8 hours give or take and even then the oil comes out pretty clean. But yeah If I would have to guess I have about 100 hours on this top end and it's getting tougher to cold start so I'm gonna do a rebuild soon if I don't sell it. Most of my riding is city riding point to point to point, with barely any highway time. It's just a toy that I ride like how the niggers on the dirtbikes in new York ride. Once the bike is warm it starts one kick every time. I would never trade the power of this for the reliability and endurance of a DRZ with my style of urban riding like this.

Bilt is the store brand. Speed and Strength and Thor are distributor brands. That's not bad, except when it comes to helmets, where they have had problems with their chinese contract manufacturers.

See if you can get a Snell helmet, they really are more protective. Icon helmets are made by J-Tech in Korea, and most are Snell (and the non-snell Icons are good too, as J-tech is a very good OEM)

Other than that, just be careful with the prestege / fashionable brands like Alpinestars and Dainese. The low end of the high-end brands can be really shit. Don't just go by reputation, look close at the stuff in your hand.

Buttons aren't the same. A clutch is a really nice thing to operate.

No the aim of the bike is efficiency. The engine doesn't produce nearly as much power as the competition to provoke more lower end torque and better fuel milage. Probably makes a great commuter, but I'd pass. Life is too short just to worry about 65mpg vs 58.

Exactly. It says races. I easily have 100 hours if not more. I've had the bike for 2 years and never touched the top end. I'm not saying I daily ride by any means but like said I ride it in short bursts doing woolies here and there and being a goon, but I don't put nearly as much stress as a race would put on it. I'm in the streets man. Plus, a top end rebuild and shim job is easy. I've ridden WR250s and DRZs and after riding my bike I could never deal with those anemic toys. It's cool having the baddest supermoto in the group rides. Always gets attention from a see of DRZs and WRs.

No it won't drain the battery. Think about it It's just one wire running to the posotive and one running to the negative. They aren't connected to anything if the tender isn't plugged in. There isn't a completed circuit to drain the battery. Everyone I know uses them with no issues.
>>
>>16490203
battery tenders a best

>>16487049
speaking from experience, do not leave small batteries (ie bike batts) on the tender for more than a week at a time. its a little too powerful for them and the voltage floating eventually damages them.
best thing for long term tending is to put the tender on one of the cheap outlet timers and set it to come on for an hour or two a day
>>
>>16487343

Be very gentle with your brakes and throttle. If you do buy the bike remember to rinse it down real quick with cold water when you get it home, then spray it down with WD-40. Salty roads will fuck your shit up.

You know the manufacturers are conservative so they can cover their own asses right? My KTM 200 calls for a new crank, connecting rod, and piston every 80 hours. I beat the fuck out of my 200 on the street and it still had strong compression and started first kick at 125 hours when I did my top end. The bottom end was still tighter than a nun's pussy too. I'm doing that and another top end at 250 hours.

Got my M license a few days, and have been practicing around in the neighborhood. I'm still freaking out while riding, but hope to get over it soon. Here is some of my confusion if anyone can help me out here:

When coming to a stop sign going idk 30mph, do you pull the clutch in, downshift all the way down to 1st, and just slowly brake until you reach it? Or do I have to pull the clutch in, shift down, pull clutch in, shift down, etc?

Saw on YouTube that you can actually shift up without the clutch? I tried it, and it only worked for third. Am I going too fast or slow or something?

My shift aren't smooth, and I don't know why. Going from 2nd to 3rd, I pull in the clutch, feel for the lever (sometime I miss and it takes time to place my foot), upshit, let go of the clutch and gun it, and it is so jerky. What am I doing wrong?

What type of gas do these bikes take? I've got a CB300F

Clutchless shifting shitstorm incoming.

Yes you can do it in all gears. Will it hurt anything? Well, probably not right away, but every craiglist sportbike you see advertised with second gear gone/issues/pops out/etc. has been busted by clutchless shifting.

Best practice is to shift into every gear sequentially and let the clutch out for engine braking, and to make sure you are already in the right gear to accelerate instantly if you need to.

You blend the inputs. Roll on the throttle while simultaneously letting the clutch slip out.

Should run fine on regular 87 octane.

>>16490499
Ride more, you'll get better.
>>
>>16490499
Nothing wrong with clutchless shifting, clutch in or out doesn't change what happens in the gearbox on a motorcycle. Ignore anything to the contrary.

>I'm no good at it

you're probably used to cars which shift slowly and awfully, the natural speed a motorcycle wants it's gears to be shifted is fast.

Here's how to clutchless upshift.

>apply a little pressure (preload it) to the gearshift while accelerating
>just before redline quickly whip throttle off and on, maybe apply a little more boot pressure

the bike should smoothly and immediately whip into the next gear if you've done it right and you'll be right back to accelerating in 1/4 of a second, will be no problem.

While downshifting you want to do the same quick movement but instead of whipping throttle off and on, you want to whip it on and off to "blip" the engine and match the RPMS, use the clutch for downshifts though, not because you can't clutchless downshift (you can) but because it smooths out the negative torque to the back wheel and is better practice because of that.
>>
>>16490499

>Slowing down for a stop: 1. Clutch in, 2. Blip throttle, 3. Shift down while revs are still up 4. release clutch smoothly, repeat until you're in first.

>Yes you can shift without the clutch and it won't hurt the transmission if done properly. I guarantee you won't be doing it properly though. You're not very skilled at shifting normally yet, so I'd wait until you're better before you start clutchless shifting.

>You're clunky upshifts: The crankshaft is connected to the rear wheel through a series of gears and sprockets which means that wheel speed is directly proportionate to engine speed. If you're going 50mph in fifth gear then your motor will spin at a certain rpm lets say 5,000rpm. So when you're shifting from fourth to fifth at 50mph you're trying to hit 5,000rpm so the motor matches the speed of the wheel. If you give a bunch of throttle and try to put it in fifth with the engine going 10,000 rpm and you're only going 50mph, then the motor will suddenly be forced from 10,000rpm down to 5,000rpm as it matches the 50mph speed of the rest of the bike. causing a jerky upshift. The same concept applies for downshifts. If you're going 50mph in fifth at 5,000rpm and you downshift without hitting the brakes and slowing down, then you'll have to hit fourth gears desired RPM at 50mph which is lets say 10,000 rpm. If you don't blip the throttle and get the motor to 10,000 rpm as you downshift, then the rear wheel will force the motor to jump from current 5,000rpm to the required 10,000rpm causing a jerk.

TLDR engine speed needs to match wheel speed. Too much engine speed on upshifts = bad. Too little engine speed on downshifts = bad.

>Oh and your bike will run on premium pump gas 93 octane or whatever you have in your area.
