Is a Bandit 1200 good for daily use?
I ride a KLR 650 now. My commute is 45-60 minutes each way, and I carry a shit load of stuff.

I'd like a Suzuki DL-1000 V-Strom but I can`t afford one.

Suggestions welcome, keeping in mind I am poor.

Dude I live in Canada, there's two guys with converted Gixers and at least four guys who ride dualsports all winter in my city. I see them out all the time especially during a fresh blizzard.

That's also not counting the dirtbike fags who live way out in my cities suburbs.

>Based on the position of the mirror and where his shoulder is in it, he can't be bolt upright unless he's a turbo manlet

nah he's bolt upright, trust me. I have a moderately low + leaned off body position and it looks like this from the cameras perspective, you can visibly tell when somebody is down on or under the screen line etc.

My point is it really isn't a big deal for 10 degrees of lean angle, /dbt/ is obsessed with body position because it's the easiest thing to critique, it's important to critique mind you, but not on somebody just learning to corner who would find it very uncomfortable to lean off to a larger degree without any centrifugal force to keep him on the bike so he'd literally be hanging off.

He just needs some practice and go hit some real twisties, he doesn't need his ear fucking chewed off, he's an overexcited noob posting crap, I get it, it's annoying but he'll get there eventually...maybe.
>>

>TFW own a bike but it needs to be revived
Lame.
>>
Should I annoy my instructor soon about upgrading my license or should I wait until I want to actually do it? I'm not going to get a new bike this year yet.
My inspection is due by May, should I get it done ASAP and "waste" a few months of inspection-free riding, or wait until May and risk not having access to my bike when the weather is nice?
>>
>>16481117
Just do it ASAP. I waited for the same reason, but it ended up taking a lot longer to do my unrestricted license than I expected. If you get it out of the way then there's no nasty surprises.

I live in Massachusetts and there are some sick fucks here that ride all winter. Watching them from inside my car is amazing because they look completely unphased by the 10F wind blowing in their face at 80mph. They aren't bundled up in eskimo-tier clothing either. Most of the shit they wear looks pretty slimming. So I don't know whats going on, but it's definitely possible to do it.

they are not bad tires. I don't like the way multi compound front tires wear. they turned triangle shaped for me since I spend all my bike time in the twisties.

>>16481962
Get single compound fromt and multi compound rear. That way it wears evenly with all the burnouts.
>>
so dbt, I bought a literal barn find Honda C100 from 1964. The motor turns over and makes spark, but the kickstarter isn't engaging. Do I put $160 worth of parts into this little 50cc motor to get it working again as a bumpstart machine, or put $400 into a Lifan 125cc swap? There's some other stuff that needs replacing, too, including the wiring, and the Lifan motor with rewiring for a 12V system seems to make a lot of sense to me.
>>
>>16482021
What's the value of an original c100? It's only original once.
>>
>>16481939
these boots look fine though in terms of ankle protection, and it will be easy to shift up gears in them.
>>
>>16482036
So this one is in pretty rough condition - very little rust, but the paint is janky, the seat has seen far better days, the engine's side cover was cracked, the plastics have rotted, the bars are bent from a crash, and so on. I could revert it to original condition with a few hundred dollars in parts and a lot of work, and then sell it later for like $800-1000, but this one's ratty enough that I think the option of street-rodding it out with a larger motor and manual trans is a lot more fun sounding and probably more realistically usable around town.

Eh, I actually think they're ok so long as you don't subscribe to the leather butt pirate subculture, don't remove what practicality *is* there in the name of "coolness" (exceptions can be made for really tastefully done knucklehead bobbers), and admit their shortcomings.

tl;dr - cruisers are fun in their own slow way but I can't blame people for hating them
>>
>>16482810
Consider the following: unlike basically any other manufacturer. Harley works to fight value drift. When the Big Four and BMW are only making self-driving electric speed- and wheelie-restricted futurebikes, Harley will still be building 110ci chromed v-twins.

I would prefer to stand athwart history crying "halt!" at a slightly different point than they chose, but at least they're giving it a shot. Can't really say that for anyone else.

I'm not a burnout guy, I go through 6 to 8 rear tires a year.

I did go to tire that come in a single compound front. Metzler M7RRs work real well for me. I've been averaging an extra 200 miles out of a rear ( Q3, PP 1,2 &3, BT003, 16 and S20 were previous rears run ). and they still stick like fucking glue with a predictable break into a slide.
>>

basically, the idea is that at a given speed you'll be doing more revs in the lower gear, and that by revving as you clutch out you'll be matching revs at the crank to the speed of the wheel. This massively reduces stress on the whole system. Or something like that

Long and short of it is, 600 supersports just aren't selling anymore as an entire class, because the used market is oversaturated and street/touring-focused bikes just straight up sell better.

The Daytona 675 isn't capable of meeting Euro4 standards, apparently, so they've axed it for now.

Pretty safe bet that they'll use the new 765 engine or similar in a replacement within the next year or two, though, especially since they're all but confirmed to be the engine supplier to Moto2 from 2018. A lot of manufacturers are shying away from the 600 SS class, since sales have fallen off a cliff.

>>
>>16483213
Why does it matter what it's called? You can clearly see how it works. One foot down, spin the rear wheel and pivot around your planted foot.
>>
>>16483213
>>16483213
Same thing only he is spinning the rear wheel because he probably cant handle lifting the bike up like that.
>>
>>16483205
it can do 1100-1500 kg, so a 50 kg at max tow jig and a 115 kg bike shouldn't be a problem

im just worried about how sturdy the platform is whether it would like going up hill with a bike on it
>>
>>16483194
Make sure your hitch is rated for it but yea, I used to use one, it even held a pigfat DRZ, though I would hesitate to go over 300lbs.
>>
>>16483221
so same thing except its different in several ways. so not the same at all.
>>
>>16483225
this is only for a shitty ag bike, but you thought the mounting system was alright and durable?
>>
>>16483221
>because he can't handle
m8 it's a totally different way to turn, nothing to do with what he can and can't do

You don't intentionally spin the rear in a pivot turn because you actually want the front wheel to come up. In the kind of turn he wants to do you're fully losing traction in the rear wheel so you can slide the back end of the bike around.
>>
>>16483229
Both involve putting your foot on the ground, putting your weight back on the seat, dropping the clutch and pivoting around the foot that is on the ground so yes completely different.

He is doing the step before a proper pivot turn... what is hard to understand?

I'm sure I've reached the lowest point in my life and I don't even feel like killing myself.

I just wanna sit somewhere and watch time go by.
>>
>>16483251
what the supermoto did looks more difficult because you're breaking traction with the rear.

>>16483246
what's hard to understand is why you consider them the same at all. and no, i don't know exactly how it's done, that's why I asked, how it is done. i don't care about the wheelie pivot turns right now, i didn't ask about that.
>>
>>16483251
No because as I already explained it's completely different. One raises the front wheel in the air and allows you to pivot around the rear wheel. The other completely breaks traction on the rear wheel and allows you to pivot around the front wheel. Whether one is easier or not, generally a stepping stone to the other etc. is irrelevant.
>>
>>16483253
This, pivot turn you put your weight back, in the video the turn he does requires balls on the fuel tank.

get your balls up on the fuel tank, plant a foot on the ground, get the rear wheel spinning with the front brake engaged, then slowly start releasing the front brake while turning the bike at full lock and it will pivot straight around.

I don't think you realize how this works. Trailers only put a portion of their weight on the hitch, in your case those 50 kilos. A hitch carrier puts its entire weight on the hitch, and you need a really high rated hitch to put an entire motorcycle plus carrier weight on it. You're far better off with a small motorcycle trailer.

I change them out at 85-90% life. there is no sane reason to go any farther than that when it's the only thing keeping your ass from sliding on the pavement rather than your rear tire. Why my tires don't last, a thumper is hard on tires, remember it's just one big thump to propel you forward rather than 4 small ones like on your bike. that and I occasionally ride a little too hard and back it in every once in a while, tires DO NOT LAST when you do that.
>>
>>16483123
Every third ride like clockwork ( 6-700 miles ), I can do it about 10 minutes, 15 if it's the third change and I'm doing the filter. I also check my tires pressure every time before I go ride. I only occasionally clean my rear view mirror to check on what the DRZ boys are doing, I find it easier to just wait for them at the next stop.
>>
>>16483612
historically it's actually the opposite of that, screamer type engines with equally spaced pulses like 180 degree crank I4 engines tend to fuck up tyres the most because they spin up the hardest.

That's why they invented all sorts of big bang engines for 500cc and motoGP bikes, and why the kawasaki bike shreds tyres so much harder than the ducatis and RSV4s in WSBK (poor tom sykes).

why is the wr500 seldom discussed?

So it's pretty much the same as the 800 in the Tiger now? That's what I figured but a man can dream.

I'm genuinely jealous. How mental was it?
>>
>>16483652
>historically it's actually the opposite of that, screamer type engines with equally spaced pulses like 180 degree crank I4 engines tend to fuck up tyres the most because they spin up the hardest.
Only if you are riding the piss out of them, I'd suspect most folks on peter bikes hardly ever give it the full beans.
>>
>>16483695
Nah, the 800 triple as a stroked 675. The 765 is stroked and bored.

the 90's 2 stroke?
>>
>>16483710
true, but the #1 killer of tyres is generally still weight and speed which leets have in spades but motards really don't.

I too am struggling to see how you could be using that many tyres.
>>
>>16483039
you're running your tire pressure way too low

the other problem with a 180 degree crank is that at top dead center and bottom dead center all of the pistons come to a stop at the same time as their stroke changes direction this causes a lot of drivetrain lash problems
>>
>>16483652
you sure its not because the kawasaki has a more rigid frame? I hear a little bit of flex in the chassis helps tire life a lot
>>
>>16483728
I'm not the only guy in the group that I ride with that only get's 1500-2000 miles out of a rear tire. None of us are stuntaz, just twisty riders. It's not uncommon from what I've read over at SMJ either.
>>

No I'm not.

how many psi
>>
>>16483743
sure could be a factor, but the reason yamaha run their crossplane cranks and why honda is moving away from their straight crank now that they don't have bespoke electronics to tame it is for exit drive on corners, they just don't get traction in the same way.

See: Mugello 2016 where lorenzo pipped marquez to the line based entirely off far better corner exit drive.
>>
>>16483760
Summer 26 psi cold, winter 24psi cold. This is proper for a supermoto.

>>
>>16483767
m8 those are the pressures someone might be using for racing where you have to keep the tire super hot but that definitely isn't going to be good for the tire life. Those tires are meant for much higher pressures.
>>
>>16483789
Racing supermoto's is normally in the 20psi cold range.
Trust me, this is right for supermoto STREET use on super sport tires. Feel free to google it up.

You guys need to remember, heat in the tire is made carcass flex and supermoto's are at least 100 lbs lighter than your super sports. If you want them to come to temp at all you need the correct flex. you are not going to get it without dropping the pressure.

they should be 36PSI and 38PSI

12070-17 and 160/60-17 rear.

if you run them that high you will slide all over the fucking place from them remaining ice cold, it's not a 450 lb super sport.

I fucking doubt that, I also doubt you're legitimately using 8 rear tyres a year for 10-12k of riding, I don't know what your deal is but it's weird.

The goal is to stick not sick leans.

Come back and talk to me after you've worn out a few supermotos.

I've ridden supermotos on both street and track faster than you have. it doesn't take that low of tire pressure

just so everyone who doesn't know better won't get any stupid ideas, these people who are talking like there is one correct tire pressure are complete fuckwits. correct tire pressure changes on road surface, temperature, riding style, how fast you want to go, how fast you want tires to heat up, how long you want them to last, etc., so if anyone tells you "oh you're running x tire on y bike? set youre pressures to z" just ignore them unless they are the suspension guy at the track and they're looking at your tire wear.

of course there is.

Running 24 psi on a road bike in winter is fucking retarded though.

The proof is the fact that by his own admission his rear tyres are lasting about 1.5k on a 123 kg bike that makes 43 hp, those figures might make sense if he was literally tracking it and nothing else but he's riding it on the road.

If you want to argue then think about those stats again and explain to me how it makes sense unless he's doing something wrong.
>>
>>16483935
>The goal is to stick not sick leans.

to stick in a straight line then? that's not generally a problem on the road.

How far are you getting the bike over? Can you show us?

Anyone have a rough idea of what I should be spending on gear as a new rider poorfag? Here's my personal rough breakdown, but not sure how good it is:

Helmet: $150

Jacket: $300

Pants: $120

Gloves: $60

Boots: $200

Total: $830

Keeping an eye on craigslist for stuff I can get used, but those are my "new" prices. Over/under spending anywhere?

It's a huge example of "stop liking what I don't like!!"

Harley culture (boomers/fake outlaws) is awful, but I love cruisers and the hate they get on this board is hilarious. Some people just want to enjoy the ride on a nice looking machine.

>hurr durr sport tourers arrr bettrrrr lmao XD

I said nice looking. Which is a subjective personal preference.
>>
>>16484024
>Helmet
If it has DOT and ECE 22.05, every buck past $100 you're paying for features, not protection. Check S.H.A.R.P., pick 4- and 5-star helmets, order from cheapest up.

>Jacket
A $100 textile jacket is good enough outside of track. Elbow, shoulder and back(!) protectors are a must, a smart thing to do is buy aftermarket protectors that fit the jacket, always almost better than the original ones.

>Pants
Same as above. Textile is enough, knee pads a must, hip pads a plus.

>Gloves
Leather with joint and palm(!) armor. Alpinestars has the nice "pinky-bridge" that may or may not protect your pinky in a crash. $50-$100 depending on preferences and local availability, Alpinestars SP-8 is a great glove for summer / warm climate use.

>Boots
$100 and up. Ankle protection is a must. If the basics are covered all extra dosh is features and comfort, not protection. Read user reviews. TCX is a great brand and not expensive.

You can buy everything other than helmets used without compromising your safety.
