Everybody has an opinion on what people should start on that is usually closely correlated to the bike they started on, based on some fundamental egotism that they're amazing riders (though they usually aren't) and therefore the path they took was right.

Imo the bike isn't as important as the mindset of the rider, and I don't think anybody actually has the knowledge of what's best for an adult to start on because they don't know how they would have turned out had they started on anything different, there's no A and B to compare in this situation, so I just don't comment on beginner appropriate bikes or what I feel people should "start on" anymore.

The only thing I'll say with 100% confidence is the right bike to start on would be some kind of 50cc or under bike when as a kid you're finally big enough to ride something, I would have loved to have started that way.

You buy it because it is a great all around do everything bike. Fantastic in the twisties, fun offroad, great for commuting, relable and great maintenance intervals, etc.

If you want the fastest bike for your money like very other squid, buy something else.
Once you've been riding for a couple years you'll probably want a good all around bike that you can do anything on and can take you places. That's where the WRR/X shines

Don't buy old bikes with EFI though because all fuel management systems are mortal. Also the above statement isn't based on statistics. Bikes with EFI should not be left in long storage with ethanol fuel in the system because it turns to varnish even on cars and trucks.

Ride often and you'll be fine. Non-ethanol fuel is a very good idea even in systems theoretically designed for ethanol-diluted gasoline, because there is no magic technology to stop ethanol-diluted petrol from varnishing.

I don't know how the riding position of a SV650 compares to the Ninja 250 but my Ninja 250 is lightyears more comfortable than my GSXRs. With that said, the sport bike riding position does get more comfortable over time. It helped a lot once I got tank grips

Since it's free, take it and practice troubleshooting! You can part it out on Ebay after taking it apart. I don't save old two-strokes if the bottom end is shot but it may be fine.

Perform cold compression test. Properly. Gauges are cheap. If it's grossly low you can remove the top end and inspect piston/bore and bottom end play.

Check for spark and examine spark plug.

Carb probably needs cleaning.

If it's fucked, dissect the whole motorcycle for training. I'm not kidding. You can likely find a manual for download. IIRC that model requires a flywheel puller but check vintage Yamaha forums for correct info on that specific engine.

From now on post make/model/year.

If it has a title, transfer it to your name. Titled frames sell well on Ebay. Remember not to say 'title' in your advert. You will learn Ebay conventions on how to sell frames by reading.

It's wonderful to have a bike to disassemble to learn on. A cheap hand impact driver is useful for case screws. A JIS screwdriver set is useful for carbs etc.

Undiluted Pine-Sol works better than commercial carb dip. I've use them all.

Have some carb pasta:

Dirty carbs have gotten me many good deals and made me a fair amount of side money. If I owned a shop they'd make moar.

My carb overhaul kit below. I suggest noobs or casual carb molesters print this list.

Tray to work on, bright LED headlamp with narrow beam, magnifying glass, cheapass SIX point metric 1/4" drive socket set with a screwdriver and spinner ratchet handles, usual small metric combo wrenches, metric "ignition" wrench set, hollow-ground "gunsmith" style screwdriver or similar screwdriver bits, JIS multibit screwdriver, typical multibit screwdriver, set of #60 -90 drill bits for jet drilling, small visegrip to hold bits while spinning jets between thumb and forefinger to drill and debur, RUBBER TIPPED blow gun, a hunk of old throttle cable or bicycle cable (extract one strand as a "jet poker", I don't use welding tip cleaners because they are actually round files), small drill bits and screw extractors for removing EPA mixture plugs, and a five gallon pail I use to soak carbs in undiluted Pine-Sol. I pour the Pine-Sol back into the jug since it's good for a couple or three uses undiluted. You can pour it down the sink and your kitchen will smell like a G.I. party.

Nothing expensive in that list at all. BTW I never use a common wedge-shaped screwdriver on jets.

I use the cheapest carb spray I can find. Walmart toluene works as well or better then ripoff solvents with similar ingredients.

Harbor Freight ultrasonic (vibratory, really) cleaners speed things up and work fine with Pine-Sol. Avoid generic pine oil. Pine-Sol works better.

Hoard all the dead carbs you can stash no matter what bike if you expect to wrench often. Leave them assembled if they are not apart and they make convenient organ donors.

Cheap toluene carb cleaner from Walmart is least residue at best price. I buy it by the case for my shop for general use.

Best use is to wash off carb after soaking in Pine-Sol overnight then placing carb parts in pot or tub of HOT water. Slosh, rinse, take outdoors and blow out with carb cleaner if you don't have compressed air.

If I paid the Ducati tax (low in my case since I'd do my own work so not really a factor) I'd get a proper sportbike instead of a cruiser. Buying an Italian cruiser is bizarre unless you live in Italy. Then it's still bizarre to buy a crippled machine from a racebike company.

I wouldn't buy either as a cruiser. Some like the Valk but I don't care for the engine width. Some like the Diavel for looks. A big bore v-twin from a Jap maker of your choice is best cruiser bang for a buck.
