britbong here

Recently 'earned' the right to be on the road, looking to get a bike and gear. Question is, is it going to cost me a fortune to get the gear together here? Can you recommend anywhere that is a reputable seller online? Or places in the south that you have experience with where I can try a lot of stuff on and get a good feel for leathers etc? I'm happy to travel somewhere (within reason) to get gear so whatever you know is appreciated.

First off i'm thinking helmet (managed to convince my uncle to give me one of his spare Shark helmets, pretty much never used), leathers/textiles, boots and gloves. Would it be a huge catastrophe if I wore some armored jeans to begin with rather than leather bottoms?

But the fave mod was going from 120/60 to 120/70 on the front. Maybe it made sense in the mid 90s but 120/60 is an absolute garbage of a tire size and the bike can't lean for shit. It's beyond me why any bike would use that.

And uh technically it makes the bike non-road legal.

And the other 50% involve shit riders who didn't start on 125cc standards

>>16419315
Eventually the rings wear so much that they begin to fail, and the nooks and crannies of the chain gunk up and/or rust and links start to seize. While that's happening, the chain will wear until putting the adjuster all the way out doesn't do shit.

While you're riding you can feel the slack when opening up the throttle, and the seized links probably sap a couple horsepower.

I don't mean they fall apart like chinkbikes but they aren't really made with any modern technology and are generally just produced as cheaply as possible. For example the current WR125R weighs 133kg, which is significantly heaver than my 118kg 450 from 15 years ago.

Read wiring threads. There are some good ones in Chop Cult.

Some pasta but it's my pasta:

I replace my stock cables with light gauge welding cable and lugs from my local welding supply. Ensure your ground is good because that's as important as the positive side of the circuit.
....
I should mention motorcycle batteries take a quarter-inch lug. The linked example below is 6 gauge and fits 6 gauge welding cable.well. (Some lugs are too large and conflict with battery cases.)

I get these off Ebay. I'm not affiliated with the seller, just a cheap SOB (and former AF avionics weenie) who does a lot of wiring and hates paying too much per unit for simple parts and likes efficiency.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/28-COPPER-LU...BWJ6DV&vxp=mtr

I buy cheap Plano and other tackle storage boxes at Walmart then fill them with "bench stock" off Ebay including hardware.

There are lots of wiring threads but not many on how to set up your bench stock and be ready for most jobs. This is dirt cheap per connection. Numbers on bags are from another Ebay vendor. I left them for faster sorting.

Next post has more with some redundancy.
>>
>>16419362
Practice crimp splicing and heat shrinking on scrap wire. I order naked splices off Ebay, not the nasty ones covered with plastic from the auto store.
100 feet of heatshrink tubing was about ten bucks. Lots of Ebayers get it in industrial rolls then sell cut lengths.

Stagger your splices so they are not all parallel in the bundle. (You don't want a "tumor" in the middle.)

Buy good strippers and crimpers. They make wiring pleasant. You can also solder, but properly crimped splices work fine on aircraft (I'm a former OV-10 Bronco and F-4 Phantom comm/nav troop) and most people don't do a lot of soldering. You can certainly make "Western Union" splices and solder them but it's a pain with no payoff on an installed harness, or you can tin your wire, insert into naked butt splices with some flux in them, crimp then solder or just solder. (Lots of choices. Do a sound job and the electrons won't care!). I'm generous with small heat shrink on motorcycles to exclude moisture, using about 3x the length of my exposed splice.

You'll spend a few dollars on your wiring kit, but doing it right the first time will let you kick ass in the future.

Here's what I just bought for butt splices to restock. I'm not affiliated with the seller but it's a good deal. I use clear Plano and other tackle storage boxes from Walmart (they are made in USA) to sort my parts:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/171195748808?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Example stripper and crimper pix. http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46676

continued next post
>>
>>16419371
I use a similar stripper to the Greenlee pictured, but you can get by with more basic strippers if you are careful and PRACTICE a few cuts first. Too many wiring noobs practice on their work then wonder why they ran out of parent harness wire.

If you want to maintain the same color code, or at least a color code you can annotate on your service manual wiring diagram, you need a variety of wire of the right gauge.

I've not bought from this seller but it's inexpensive and has a variety of wire. I would use heat shrink over the whole bundle instead of split loom. I'd guesstimate 3/4" heat shrink would fit over your bundle.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Foot-Motorcycle-Wiring-Harness-Kit-Cafe-Racer-Chopper-Bobber-Custom-/301965020127

When you are splicing a wire harness extension, you obviously cannot fit a single piece of heat shrink over the whole assembled harness. You can join one end of your extension to your existing wire bundle. cover that with heat shrink, slide more heat shrink over that bundle shrinking all but the last sections, slip heat shrink over the "shrunk" sections to slide it out of the way, connect the rest of your wire bundle, then slide the heat shrink over your bundle and shrink that. A heat gun is the way to go for that job. Need not be expensive.

Have fun. Once you've got it down no wiring harness on a motorcycle will intimidate you. STRONGLY resist the urge to to a ghetto job. With practice doing it right is faster than doing it wrong, beside yielding a much better result.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO WIRING, SAVE ALL THREE POSTS FOR REFERENCE.

Now go wire something.

>not starting on a 125/250 so you can take it to a kart track literally every day and actually learn to ride instead of fucking around on backroads on your 600

One week of kart track days costs about as much as one actual trackday and eats through tires and brakes much slower, and the expendables like tires/chains/brakes on smaller bikes are cheaper anyways. A small bike is literally the best thing if you want to really learn how to ride. If a kart track will even allow a bigger bike, you won't stand a chance in the corners.

But if you just want to cruise with style then by all means get a GSXR. Just don't whine when you get yourself into trouble (as you can on a bigger bike) and haven't practiced the skills necessary to deal with it.

r8 my wires. Ignore the part hanging down on the left side. I'm not done with that.

The hardest part for me is routing them. They are going so many different places it's hard to decide where to join them and split them apart and make it look clean where wires move from one bundle to another.

Can I just ask any go-kart place if/when I could use their track? How does that work?

You can't reach high speeds or really race anything faster than a gokart. Less liability, low track wear, crashes are unlikely to seriously damage facilities. The one nearest me will let you take anything that looks like a supermoto around for a couple of hours for $20 though.
>>
>>16419475
They look like wires.

One useful trick is tie them in place with string or zip ties to check fit and clearance when you steer.

Don't string them bowstring tight. Leave a bit of slack for ease of conforming to the motorcycle and for any potential future repairs.

I see what appears to be some exposed connector at the four o'clock axis of the horn next to that black square relay. If so, cover with heat shrink to exclude moisture but if not convenient you can smear some black sensor-safe RTV from the auto store over it. Black blends and RTV can be peeled off for maintenance. It won't melt anything.

If you tape any harness, use Scotch electrical tape. It's worth it.
>>
>>16419506
BTW I avoid using many plastic zip ties for actually holding harness. I use stainless steel zip ties off Ebay and heatshrink over the part that will support the harness. Quality zip ties work well tho.

Can always do motogymkhana, find a carpark or nice big flat bit of tarmac and get doing some 8s.

My brother does it because he already lost his license once (got unlucky) and won't go ride any twisties on road. It can't teach you everything but I will say he was immediately fast on track after not riding on road twisties in probably like 7 months (initially faster than me actually)

The main thing is it's hard to learn body position doing that but a little secret is that body position isn't the be all and end all of riding fast, especially when you're a beginner to track riding.

other than that I've changed to the turn signals to led, on both the SV and Triumph Daytona, and put tank sliders on the daytona, and frame sliders on both bikes, as well as putting in a tender plugin on both.

Rural Commuter here.
I got a question about the Icon Elsinore boot, I know it looks over the top but is it appropriate for street and trail use?
I have about 3 miles of unimproved roads I deal with daily. Anyone have experience?

probably somewhere near a regular road boot in terms of protection.
for gravel road commuting it'll be fine, for actual trail riding I'd be going for something a bit more serious

>>
I thought Movistar was a Yamaha thing but now I'm seeing CBRs with that livery?
>>
>>16420059
Ideally you want a boot that allows no movement in your ankle.
The idea is they are supposed to stop your ankles from snapping when you crash, if you can walk normally in your bike boots you may as well be wearing sneakers.

no

>>
>>16420074
Almost true. You want a boot that limits ankle movement to a normal range.
Since you almost never need to move your ankles side to side while on the bike, most boots stop that motion while leaving some up and down movement for changing gears and braking.
Cheap boots do this by either making the whole range of motion stiff which is good for protection but bad for mobility or giving motion but not adequately stopping movement so that ankle damage is possible.
Good boots (tech 10's and the sidi crossfire for example) will use a system which can flex easily for small movements but can't move enough to do any damage.

>>16420113
smx 5
>>
>>16420169
tech 10's are so good at stopping ankle movement that you can walk around while waering them with 3rd degree sprains in your ankles without actually realise your ankles are hurt.
>>
>>16420177
yep, but you can still walk and change gear ok because they don't limit small movements

my mate has these cheap oneal things that seemed ok when they were new but now they're broken in they move way to far way to easily.
he had a small stack on the weekend (<20km/h) and managed to twist his ankle enough that he couldn't walk

also for those whinging, spend a week walking round in ski or snowboard boots and even stiff mx boots will feel like tennis shoes
>>
>>16420211

>>
>>16420074
>>16420104
Ideally, if you're going somewhere where you might want to walk, you take it easy so you're not likely to crash

You'll break a collarbone even with gear. Hit a pole and your guts will fly out your neck or you'll end up in the hospital with brain damage and a doctor saying "good thing you were wearing a helmet, kid!" (while looking like some sort of lovecraftian horror and phasing in and out of reality)

practise being loose. if you're on a sportsbike or a naked you'll want the balls of your feet on the footpegs, heels up gripping the bike and knees gripping the tank hard. You should be able to hold yourself in the riding position with no arms. The pressure should be through the footpegs and through the tank

When you're riding along, try and flap your arms like a chicken. If you can't, you're too tight on the bars.

But seriously it's something that happens with time. You get more confident and you relax and it all just falls into place. Ride moar

Cheap break pads are good enought for commuting, dont wear the rottors and give sufficient stoping power. I know there not the best but there cheap and if they suck you can just replace them.

Any one have experience with the Ducati Scrambler or Moto Guzzi V7?

I am looking for a bike that will be able to confidently pass on a highway, have a comfortable riding position, do a smidge of offroading (think back country double track style) and not be so fucking heavy like all the "adventure bikes" out there.

I narrowed it down to these two because they aren't street legal dirtbike looking, and my wife likes some metal on the bike.

My usage will be 80% commuting (8 mile highway, 3 mile street road with Cali filtering) 15% finding new hipster coffee shops on the weekend, and 5% me fucking around and finding forest trails.

What say ye?

Squids usually own the 600s because they're too girly to handle a 1000.

If you want to get a GSXR that has definitely never been owned by a squid, get the 750. It's unpopular and it's engine displacement doesn't have a brand recognition effect. The only downside is it's down on power compared to the 1000. The upside is that it's also down on weight, so the 1/4 mile times between them aren't even a half second apart.
>>
Why are there so few Honda CBR 250s compared to Ninja 250s? They seem like they're basically the same.
>>
>>16420980
ay your life, in that case just go test ride both and go with your heart.

I don't like either myself, FI R1s have always had gutless midranges and the 929 is just a smaller engine and makes much lower power than the 999 cc bikes that emerged at the same time.

This is a 2004 dyno but, look at how weak the R1s are down low for that era.

I've got a pair of Scramblers that I picked up for some summer time shenanigans and promotion work over Christmas, they're decent bikes, but i'd probably go with the V7 if I were laying out my own cash on something long term simply because they'll hold their value better.

Take both for a spin, get some quotes on servicing costs either way, for the level of off road riding you're talking about literally any bike could handle that so I wouldn't even factor that in.

Also don't ever come to /dbt/ for advice, this place is nothing but poorfags, nobike parrots and faggots that can't wrench.

no, you only need to replace the seals if they're in poor condition or if you damage them. it sounds like you'll probably need new ones anyways.

also make sure your brake lever isn't chinese

There is literally nothing wrong with getting a middle weight sport-standard, and a 750 is a totally great choice for a long term bike. Especially in places where liters are too expensive due to insurance costs.

And unless you're tracking the bike often, you're probably going to be fine with the power of a 600-750 anyway. So unless you're one of the lucky few who can
>have low insurance due to your area
>nearby track
>have enough money to tow a bike to a track
Then you can probably get along fine with a 600-800cc standard of some kind for street riding.

So I don't have a car license yet (I've had two car permits over the years). Is it a dumb idea to get a bike? Already taken my MSF and I have a handful of hours in a car. Plan to get my full license in a bit but really my main motivation is that I need it for my bike license. I'm 21 if that matters.

Thinking about getting a lowering link for my second bike to teach my girlfriend on.

She's like 5'4" and the seat height is almost 36".

I figure an inch from the stock shock adjustment, another inch or so from backing out preload, an inch from a lowering link, and an inch from a low cut seat and I'll get it down to around 32" so she will probably be able to get the ball of her foot down enough to ride.
