The DR-Z400 is objectively the best expert level dual sport bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke single cylinder bike, so it gets at least 50mpg.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport. It it tall and light with a steering geometry set up to be very agile. This combined with the wide handlebars make it very easy to change directions.
> brakes
The brakes are designed for off-road and aren't so twitchy they will lock up easily on slick surfaces. They are completely acceptable but require a firm squeeze, yet with a larger diameter rotor upgrade like on the SM model you will find it taking no effort at all to slow down very quickly.
> power
When you're a good rider you don't need 100+ HP to pass everyone on the touge. Git gud faget.
> carbs
The CV carb found on the DR-Z helps calm down the twitchiness of a lightweight single.
> seating position
The tall seat combined with a completely upright seating position puts you high enough to see over all but the highest brotrucks. It is also a very comfortable position which puts practically no strain on your lower back or wrists.
> price and availability
The bike has gone unchanged for the last 15 years so there's plenty available for very cheap. The popularity and lack of change keeps the resale value high so it's easy to sell. This has the downside of making them expensive to buy in the used market but can be avoided with patience.
> suspension
The Dr-Z400 features a fully adjustable Showa cartridge forks and shock which offer splendid damping characteristics. You can tune it to your riding style with the clickers and preload adjusters, but you will benefit from a respring if you're a fat fuck. Lose some weight.

we don't call reddit gay, we call reddit the worst motorcycling community in the universe that will actively devolve your ability to ride with it's terrible attitude and turn you into an insufferable arsehole who believes touching the front brake mid turn will make you crash and that everything keith code says is right.

>>
>>16231281
>believes touching the front brake mid turn will make you crash and that everything keith code says is right.
sounds a lot like dbt desu. A lot of these pricks think the techniques taught in TOTW2 aren't directed primarily at making best lap times on a track. People here have told me I shouldn't go around a corner on the street without rolling the throttle on the whole time, as if it's necessary at all, much less at a mellow lean angle.
>>
>>16231273
I'm adapting to it

Anyone have any experience wearing perf leather during the summer? I want something that breathes okay for summer heat in Pennsylvania but I definitely think protection is a better trade off for comfort so some type of flimsy mesh jacket won't cut it for me. Anyone know of any alternatives, maybe a jacket that uses both mesh and leather?
>>
>>16231296
>Maintains speed and balance
>keeps suspension compressed so changes in input don't cause severe upsets in traction

yeah it's fucking necessary. you can coast around corners all day but it's not a great idea. you can also never alter your body position because you can, but good body position reduces lean angle and improves traction so you're less likely to fucking crash.

track techniques are essentially good riding techniques. track techniques maximize available traction and keep the bike stable.

the only difference between track vehicle operation and street vehicle operation is stop signs, right of way, and speed limits.
>>
>>16231224

>>
>>16231372
I'm just cruising down a road at the speed limit homeboy, using maybe 3% of my bike's traction. There's no need to hang off and roll on the throttle like a boy racer because there's literally nothing I could do short of smashing the brakes or revving to 14k and dumping the clutch that could break traction. When riding fast of course I will do what it takes to maximize performance but I don't do that 100% of the time. You are one of the retards I was talking about.
>>
>>16231367
Oh and I forgot to mention I'm not looking for something that looks like it belongs on the track or has blatant logo advertising everywhere. Something more minimalist, I bought a Spectre 750 so I would like to compliment that.

top boxes look good when color matched and paired with side cases

also, you're supposed to put bags inside panniers, and they normally open with the open side up and cables/straps keeping them from falling open
>>
>>16231367
Yeah perforated leather (assuming it has those light fabric vents in the non-essential areas like underarms and inner thighs) is nice in the summer. My race leathers are cooler than my textile riding jacket. The main downside is that it isn't adjustable simply with a zipper to make it waterproof and/or windproof so I would have to add extra layers to ride comfortably in cold or wet conditions. Also the leathers are stiffer and tend to force the riding position when off the bike which is annoying, but I assume street-aimed leathers wouldn't be so bad about this.

What are the summers like where you live? I get pretty high humidity in my area so that really what I'm worried about
>>
>>16231386
You are not hanging off like a monkey because cornering physics don't allow it without unbalancing the bike until you reach a certain speed. Nobody thinks you're a boy racer because you scoot your butt over a half inch and barely stick your leg out unless you do the motoGP thing and stand up a bit to change position before corners.

You are on a public road. You are going to run into low-traction situations and the need to brake, swerve, and accelerate out of the fucking way mid-corner. If you're not maximizing traction and stability at all times you are going to crash and you will say "nothin i coulda done, bikes just caint handle some thangs" while laying in the hospital bed because you didn't git gud

Meanwhile all the good riders happily slid over that oil puddle and swerved around that confused female-operated minivan just fine

I've encountered plenty of low traction situations just fine. Rolling on the throttle usually isn't the answer to those. You don't want any excessive force on the tire you generally want to maintain speed and straighten up as much as possible without leaving your lane as you pass over an oil puddle. Also please explain how rolling on the throttle will help me if I need to suddenly brake during a corner for some road hazard.

Been riding on a 36 degree (c) day before in full perf leathers (pic related) and it was manageable.

Just make sure to wear skins or breathable sports clothes underneath (or nothing at all, racer style) or it won't work properly (and drink a lot of water).

I have a mesh jacket and such for really hot summer day commuting and what not though.

>>16231372
the look track instructors have on their face when mentioning keith code is pretty funny, he seems to have caused a lot of headaches over the years, a story I've head multiple times is people who misinterpret the opening throttle thing and take it to mean you have to be constantly accelerating or you'll crash and simply run wide straight off the course because they're afraid to close the throttle.

I'm not even sure it's right, different people say different things, I'm certainly not accelerating at the apex you just crack the throttle a bit to stop decelerating, if you're turning as hard as possible at the apex then I don't think you can also be accelerating, that's just gonna be even more stress on the tyres.

https://youtu.be/40NDQpbj_7Y?t=95 see here for an exaggerated example of what I mean, if you're like at the maximum turning power the grip of the tyres will afford mid corner it seems a little impossible to me you could be accelerating, you would have to be entering too slow.

I dunno maybe somebody who knows more than me can chime in.

That's because slowly rolling on the throttle through a corner is a street riding technique for maintaining speed and stabilizing the suspension, not a track technique

>>
>>16231469
>>He thinks he has traction when the wheel isn't under power
Yes I do. There is still a force of gravity pushing my tires down onto the road and the road pushing back on them, allowing friction to act between them.

>>16231469
>>he thinks he shouldn't have more traction available
Of course I don't think I need more available traction. I already have way more than I need in the instances I am talking about.

>>16231469
>>he probably doesn't even know how to brake mid-corner without straightening out first because he coasts through and can't do it
Of course I can.

I apply gofast techniques when I want to go fast. You are just a retarded rider for thinking the same techniques apply to every corner at every speed.

It's not accelerating, it's maintaining speed

If you are rolling on the throttle, you will have more front wheel traction to brake or swerve to avoid that oil puddle. If you go over that oil puddle, you can modulate the throttle to save it without severely upsetting what little traction you still have.

But no, it's a boyracer gofast technique, that's why it's taught to every street rider everywhere and ignored by cruiser faggots since the beginning of time.

motoGP isn't real riding.
>>
>>16231663
slow speed informs high speed. good racers are the sorts that would smoke everyone else in other disciplines.

that's kind of the point of motoGP being the pinnacle of motorcucle racing and not motocross
>>
>>16231669
an MX racer would be better at MotoGP than the inverse
>>
>>16231682
Yeah, sure, that's why they choose to compete in the poorer sport, makes perfect sense.
>>
>>16231682
a GP racer would probably kick everyone's ass in MX given the time to adjust, and then go back to GP and wipe the track clean before doing victory skids through the gravel traps

the MX racer would probably fall into last place and try to drift to keep themselves distracted from their loss

Wet

Actually if WHP divided by wet weight comes between .2 and .15 you should be fine

If it doesn't why do you have a motorcycle

72.5

Realistically probably 50 and above, depends on many factors, cylinder count, bore/stroke etc

that's why I said it depends on factors such as cylinder count, bore/stroke and other such things. A large long stroke engine might only make 50 hp but it will make it low and quickly.
>>
>>16231820
Idk man. Any bike with only 50hp at highway speeds for a stretch of time sounds uncomfortable

Is an XR400R worth it if I want a cheap 400 dual Sport.
Is it similar to the 650R? I want something super reliable, doesn't need much maintaining and is fun on the trails.

Pretty good. No sales on here at the moment, usually some in autumn to make room for the next spring's gear.

Went into the dealership next door after getting my helmet and they had a brand new MT-03 sitting on the floor with a sold sticker on it. Mentioned it to the salesperson and they said someone came in and put down a $500 deposit three months ago and never came back. Thinking of going back before the new year and offering 1k under retail to take it off them. If they won't take it, I'll go into the city and get a new one in a different colour for ~500 under retail instead
