Torn between the kawasaki ninja 650 or waiting for the honda rebel 500, and i know theyre 2 completely different bikes but i dont know which would be a vetter daily considering the situation i live in, poor roads and heavy traffic with shit speed limits. Also the vulcan s look mighty fine too.

Yeah cruisers are initially comfy, for like 20 minutes lol. They have a plush seat and leaned back riding position which is like 'showroom comfy'. The problem is that all the road bumps go directly into your unsupported spine, and your posture makes you a parachute for the wind. Source: owned a virago 1100 for like a year.

Seriously for commuting and all round use, you're better off with a UJM/standard, or possibly a dual sport for DAT vision over cars.

The sv650 truly is a modern classic. You are living in the era where they are cheap hacks, but 30 years from now, a clean SV will be a commodity. Or maybe not a commodity, but definitely a well liked and oft-talked about classic motorcycle.

Abrasion test results

Hein Gericke Reno leather jeans: 4.74 seconds
Draggin' Biker kevlar jeans: 3.07 seconds
Hornee kevlar jeans: 1.39 seconds
Rev'it Sand textile trousers: 0.71 seconds
Levi stonewash 501s: 0.56 seconds
Tesco Cherokee jeans: 0.16 seconds

So even a budget pair of fairly fashiony leather trousers (£100) offers better protection than premium kevlar jeans (£150), or the fancy Rev'it pants (£190). Those Rev'it BMW-bait "Adventure" trousers are shockingly poor for the price,

Kek ancient history:
September 1988 issue of Cycle magazine did a comparison. They put a 75 pound sandbag in a milk crate, hooked to an assembly off the back of a pick-up. Test sample bags, made from different materials, filled with chalk was stitched to the bottom, when they got the tuck up to 50 mph, they lowered the samples to contact the pavement, to simulate a slide (not a tumble) here are the results, when the sample material wore through, the chalk line was visible, indicating the point at which the rider would be down to skin.

Leather competition weight, 3 oz/sq ft .... 86 feet
Kevlar 29 Aramid fiibre, Style 713 .... 22 ft 1 in
Cordra nylon, type 440 .... 18 ft 3 in
2 year old 100% cotton denim jeans .... 4 ft 5 in
Leather, fashion weight, 1.75 oz/sq ft .... 4 ft 4 in
Leather, fashion weight nude finish .... 4 ft 3 in
Senior ballistic nylon .... 3 ft 10 in
New 100% cotton denim jeans .... 3 ft 10 in

This is dated, and there may well be newer materials out there, but riding leathers are still your best bet
>>
>>16232572
according to this test, in the case of a slide you are better off with $200 leather jeans than a $2000 Rukka

- 350€ Textile combi

- 350€ leather

>usable after test with reservations (cracks)

- 900€ textile combi
>noteworthy skin and soft parts injuries
>not usable after test - heavy damage
- 900€ leather combi
>no skin or soft part injuries
>usable after test with reservations (not further specified)

- >1000€ textile combi
>light skin and soft parts injuries
>not usable after test
- >1000€ leather combi
>maximal protective factor and by far the best in test
>completly usable after crash, only visual damage

What is noteworthy that the leather suits are all a couple of bucks cheaper in the higher segments.

>900€ segment
Textile: 895€
Leather: 790€

>+1000€ segment
Textile 1625€

I agree, and worked on Meriden Bonnies when they were nearly new. Many owners of classic light, narrow Britbikes own SV650s too.

Hoard all the clean stock SV parts you can if you have space. I've lived through the cool street two-stroke (H1,H2, RD 350, 400 etc) cycle and seen the same thing happen.

Beginner here, DRZ 400SM or SV650? The stickied guide is kinda old and he doesn't much go into beginner dual sport bikes. Leaning towards DRZ because it's more versatile? Or is the off-roadability a meme?

Cool, thanks. When I say beginner I really do mean beginner though. Is the SV as forgiving and easy to learn on? (just going off of what I've been reading). Another aspect of the DRZ that I liked was that I feel like it would handle being dropped a lot better. Since this would be my first bike this was a concern. I love the SV650 but I can't shake the feeling that it's too much bike for me to start on, even though i want a bike that I'll keep for a while (unlike a 250 that I'd probably sell after a year). What's the difference between the S and the SM? Just the wheels and the suspension?

It's a typical adv bike, albeit a bit more off-road capable than most.

Adventure bikes are really road capable, but just not as fast and agile as sports bikes. You have to see them as light tourers, not heavy off-road bikes.

instead of eh acceleration below 7k and top notch acceleration above 7k some people rather just want to have good acceleration everywhere. Much more streetfriendly and easier to handle.

Some big twins have 90nM at 2k rpm flat out, you don't find that anywhere on an i4.

>I take it these kits are solid enough to take a good amount of offroading right?

For off-roading, which your earlier post didn't mention, a generic kit would work though you'd have to arrange brackets or aircraft cushion clamps since coolers are typically used on street bikes. Their radiators are as strong as coolers on off-road ATVs. One way to fit a custom install is to buy a cooler design you like off Ebay (if used, flush with solvent) whose size and shape you prefer. For a bike for which no kits are offered, you get to figure out how to tap into the oil system.

For off-roading, I'd likely just accept the tradeoff of shorter aircooled top end life for less complexity and leave it alone.

I have been told by multiple people that it's a "grey area", and that if you're unlucky, they can get you for dangerous driving. That's why I said, if you don't overdo it, it should be alright. In most city streets here, it's impossible to filter with more than walking speed anyway.

Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because your pic gave me cancer anyway.

that's what a friend told me too, + it may be more interesting to work on than on a scooter i think

>>16233748
i thought i would get roasted for being broke haha
that's what led me to think about buying a "broken" one I could fix easily

But aren't 50ccs slow as fuck and unreliable?
>>
>>16233824
>slow as fuck and unreliable
yes but easy to fix/cheap to replace. Better slow than nothing
>>
How do I work my way into willies?
My bike power willies like crazy but I can't bring myself to attempt clutch willies because im afraid I'm going to loop.
Was thinking about buying a Grom to practice this kind of shit on and work my way into my other bike.
>>
>>16233824
50cc stock are as fast as pushbike
With a bit of italian magic you can get them to 80km/h and still have decent acceleration
>>
>>16233832
>Was thinking about buying a Grom
cringe
>>
>>16233824
A friend has a Derbi Senda and an Aprilia RS50, the Derbi would reach 110km/h, the Aprilia around 125km/h. Reliability will be fucked though.

Removing the restrictions will get you to 70-80km/h

I want a Grom for half a dozen reasons. I live in a major city and don't commute on highways. Lots of back roads. It's fun as fuck to ride AND my wife wants to get into riding so we were thinking of getting two forms to ride together instead of her starting on a 250 and trying to keep up with me on my R1

there's no need to be upset.
>>
>>16233871
remember

- no liters allowed
- no bikes over 48hp

so we can keep up. This is a beginnerfriendly meetup.

If you're a shit rider those rules won't save you. webm related. Stop ruining other people's fun.
If you're slow, so be it. You won't be the only one and the fast people will wait up after a while.

>But aren't 50ccs slow as fuck and unreliable?

Hundreds of millions of scooters move people across the globe, and while they are slow they beat walking. Why not learn to wrench on what you can afford? What you learn will be much more valuable than one mere scooter, and those who learn to wrench need never lack vehicles.

I encourage people to do stuff. Give it a shot, take your time, download all the info you can find, learn the basic scooter engine families, and read about the many cheap modification options.
