The DR-Z400 is objectively the best expert level dual sport bike.
> mileage
It's a mid-sized 4stroke single cylinder bike, so it gets at least 50mpg.
> handling
It handles nothing like a supersport. It it tall and light with a steering geometry set up to be very agile. Theis combined with the wide handlebars make it very easy to change directions.
> brakes
The brakes are designed for off-road and aren't so twitchy they will lock up easily on slick surfaces. They are completely acceptable but require a firm squeeze, yet with a larger diameter rotor upgrade like on the SM model you will find it taking no effort at all to slow down very quickly.
> power
When you're a good rider you don't need 100+ HP to pass everyone on the touge. Git gud faget.
> carbs
The CV carb found on the DR-Z helps calm down the twitchiness of a lightweight single.
> seating position
The tall seat combined with a completely upright seating position puts you high enough to see over all but the highest brotrucks. It is also a very comfortable position which puts practically no strain on your lower back or wrists.
> price and availability
The bike has gone unchanged for the last 15 years so there's plenty available for very cheap. The popularity and lack of change keeps the resale value high so it's easy to sell. This has the downside of making them expensive to buy in the used market but can be avoided with patience.
> suspension
The Dr-Z400 features a fully adjustable Showa cartridge forks and shock which offer spendid damping characteristics. You can tune it to your riding style with the clickers and preload adjusters, but you will benefit from a respring if you're a fat fuck. Lose some weight.

faux-carb

>By contrast, when the Hinkley factory started to produce its parallel twins, it was deemed vital to make the new "retro" bikes appear similar to the Meriden predecessors. For instance, the "timing chest" is still on the right, and the "primary chaincase" is on the left (needing the rear chain drive to move to the right), twin "rocker boxes", a R/H side panel resembling a dry-sump oil tank, and although the engines are fuel-injected, the injectors are made to resemble carburettors.

Ok, reason why I asked is ironically I checked out a 690 Duke (2008) with that issue. Bike seemed solid mechanically but almost every unpainted surface had some degree of rust or pitting, fasteners mostly like it sat outside its whole life. Even the bar end sliders. Cluster was also cloudy, sprocket cover broken, seat had tears, bike looked beat to fuck and the dealer that was selling it wouldn't go a penny under $4000 w/14k miles (at first lowballed by offered $3000, then went up to $3500 without a counter offer). So I passed on it. I knew they got the bike for a absolute song anyways, it can finish rusting off on their sales floor. It looked like it was ridden hard, put away wet.

And no the roller rocker bearings are 1-2-3, just change the whole rocker when you have the valve cover off if you see any wear or play on the bearing you might not be comfortable with. Its only like $70-80. Valve adjustments are simple (Every 6000 miles, and its a single cylinder SOHC). Oil changes every 2000 miles (Could stretch them out, but its only a little under 2 quarts). Other than that, the cam chain tensioner, weak factory clutches for the abuse they get, and fuel pump (stalling) they're pretty solid, might have issues with cluster too (contacts going bad from vibration, a lot of times its more a symptom of a bad battery).

Don't be too scared about rare parts on the 07-11s (654cc LC4), you can mix and match newer more common 690cc 12-16 OEM parts, even going as far as getting 720cc with a new crank. There's people with 50k+ miles on unopened engines (aside from valves).

This has probably been asked to Death, but I'm doubting between two models for my first bike. I need transportation and the house can't accomodate a fourth car. I'm 5'7'' and 150 pounds. It would mostly be used for commuting back and forth between work, I won't drive the bike faster than 50MPH because the speed limit in my state is 45.

Doubting between 2017 Ninja 300 and 2017 Yamaha YZF R-3, both with ABS. Any thoughts? State is Hawaii if that makes a difference.

Both are so similar in performance it doesnt really matter. Go sit on both at the dealers and pick the one thats most comfortable for your body. Im 6'5" and the r3 was better for my long legs.
>>
>>16220885
I have a 2015 R3
Its the bees knees, and will pull a ninja 300 at any speed. Its light, and the more upright riding position reminds me of my crf230. Anything past 70/mph with stock gearing feels a little buzzy. I feel like its meant for the streets more than long highway commutes.
Just remember to treat it like a race bike.

I thought about engine swaps. Ill probably sell it when its done though.
For shocks, measure them and then search for that length for universal shocks.
Wish i had a clean example like yours. But i paid $250 for mine and ill havr spent only $250 for a full rebuild and headlight, taillight, 12v system, etc.

>>16220885
I'm 5'5 and weigh 125, my ninja 300 is great. I sit almost completely upright with no problem. Comfy enough to commute but can still have some fun on it.

I only brought up engine swaps because I legitimate feel sorry for anyone who has to troubleshoot/adjust points.
Shocks: Yeah, I did that. hence the CR shocks.

Did you pull a 12v wiring harness off of another bike, or did you convert it yourself? My 6v system still limps on, so I don't bother touching it; though thats on my list of shit to do.
Got mine for $500. Was hotwired, and had no title.

Lucky for me my grandfather has been working on motorcycles since the 40s or so.
I did the 12v conversion myself. Its super easy. Havent got to test it yet since the bike is torn down right now. Basically you just need a 12v rectifier/regulator and switch a few things around.

Huh.
I would love to see if you could get away with the stock 6-13v sator (not sure if that rating is accurate to the 185cc). Particularly with long term use in mind.
I do know the 250 variant will go on happily without a battery, if you can live without (functioning) blinkers and a dim tail light.
Perhaps with some clever electrical +regulator breadboard debauchery, one could convert everything to LED and eliminate the battery altogether? Maybe a capacitor conversion?

Ill be trying the stock stator. I also have LED everything waiting to go on. However from reading, ive found that the charging system doesnt do much below 4000rpms. Not sure how much truth there is to that but LEDs would be useless with no power flow.

Whether its a school or just a friend of a friend, If I wanted to learn how to ride is it worth my time to get an instructor? I want to learn to ride but I don't really know a good starting point. I know how to drive manual on a car but that most likely translates to jack shit on a bike.

You don't really need an instructor, but it's recommended. If you are US, I would suggest the MSF course.
I personally never did it and am getting along just fine, but if you really don't feel comfortable or have safe neighborhood roads to learn on, it might be smart.

That's why I'm wondering. The quotes I've been getting on new motorcycles has been crazily varied depending on location. There was ~$2000 difference before tax etc on a 2016 ninja 650 with only a 150 mile difference in location.
I just wish there was some sort of "true bike" so I had an idea of what the markup is for haggling.

If you're getting an er6 i see no reason to get one new
They are built like tanks, will be slow, but will hold up for ages
A supersport i'd understand if you're a shitter that wants all the new electronic nannies

aerostich*
>>
>>16221970
Gear is really price dependant
Generally the known brands are pretty good, avoid bilt, speed &strenght and generally most hipster marques
Since you're american you should always check the rating on your helmet, as it seems your dot is kind of shitty
