is a 250 viable for this long and going to the track without getting bored? the ninja 250 aesthetic of old actually appeals to me, and i kinda prefer a light, twisty-shredding bike over a fast one (having ridden both 'styles') - more fun to ride a slow bike fast and all that.

What about a CBR250RR then?
>>
>>16222087
actually, i was looking at the suzuki gsx250f across, it's like a more comfy version of the 250rr that a bunch of anons mentioned recently. but even the bog-standard gpx250/zzr250 appeals to me, i was just wondering if the 45HP (across) or 30ishHP(35? GPX and ZZR) will be entertaining for 2 years, because they genuinely seem really fun due to being so lightweight and revvy - will the novelty of having a lightweight bike wear off and will i lust for power and not be able to take them to the track though?
>>

again, expensive as shit around me (seriously, nearly $8k AUD i last saw) and the sumo thing is kinda cool but i'm not really that much of a hooligan rider (even if it does look fun). offroading isnt my thing so most of the sumo versatility appeal is lost on me. cool bike maybe in the future once i'm not so poor

>>

see? vanity.
>>
>>16222110
isn't that the appeal of sportsbikes in general though?
really though, loudly and quickly pulling away from the lights isn't what appeals to me about the mini sports bikes, it's more the opportunity to hone my skills and learn to operate a bike with the utmost precision possible that is facilitated by a light weight and not crazy power

>>
>>16222114
i'm not quite sure you know the difference between vanity and opinion/preference.

but no, the i'm not really drawn to the main riding appeals of a sumo (riding up staircases and doing adventurous and stunty stuff), and the other main draws (lightweight, good cornering, etc.) are just as easily obtained on a beginner sports bike.
>>
>>16222126
because 2strokes make no sense as a commuter due to the narrow power band and are difficult to learn on for the same reason?
>>
>>16222130
>Supermotos are lighter
>Supermotos corner better
>"No man I can't ride that, it's for lazy 13 year olds who can't pedal their BMX bikes"
>>
>>16222129
dude, i'm not doubting the logic there, i'm just saying that subjectivity and opinion in a hobby and logic don't necessarily mix, especially when starter sports bikes are still really easy to learn on even if they are more portly than a supermoto.
>>
>>16222136
i'm gonna bow out of this, but i never said that supermotos aren't better at certain things, just that beginner sports bikes also provide those opportunities even if it is to a lesser degree.
also, never said that i view sumos as some shitty teenager bike, more that they just don't make me as excited to ride as a sports bike does - nothing to do with vanity or how i want to be seen, but more just what appeals to my senses.
you do you, man.
>>
>>16222138
Actually dude anything with linear power delivery, or anything that can stay in the speed limit while in the powerband, is easy to learn on for street riders

But what you want is a supermoto, and what you are too vain for because of motovlogger stereotypes is a supermoto

>>
>>16222166
never took it to a track. Small bikes are fun as long as you aren't stupid about it. It all depends on what you want to get out of motorcycling
>>
A supermoto should be one of your spare bikes. You'll no doubt end up trying to balance point wheelies or drift it and doing that to your only bike is just silly unless you're ready to stop riding until you fix it. Yes they can take a fair bit of abuse, but they will break just like anything else.

Just get a nice road bike and treat it well until you afford something you can trash on the side. You're meant to crash your supermoto/dirtbike so you learn to avoid crashing your sportsbike.

Insightful comment. Stereotypes can be ignored. I could give a shit if every motovlogger explosively prolapsed and died because they don't interest or concern me. If I didn't have too many bikes I'd add a sumo to the fleet. Narrow and agile is good, and fairings are just more shit to break/mmaintenance obstacles when not on the highway.

Sample all the bikes you can. Fuck image. Nobody else gives a shit what you do.

Learn not to give a shit about that and consider the whole motorcycle, because you don't ride stats unless you are a real racer. You ride the whole machine which includes ergonomics and I don't mean how you appear on the motherfucker. Most common mistake newbs (and some oldbs) make is buying by the numbers. Test rides will show you what you will actually like using.

>right no I have absolutely no time and tools to fix it

Everybody can find time if they want to and you can buy tools cheap in minutes online while shitposting here. Harbor Freight exists. Fess up, you got lazy and hoped it would work out. Everyone does that sooner or later with something. :) A brakelight switch ain't shit. Order part online, and if extremely pressed for time split the job into parts.

I've broken down projects into very small task sets because I wasn't getting enough shit done. You can get a scary amount of shit done in half-hour increments or even less. I do something every day, no matter how minor, and bike/truck/home task loads fade away quickly.

Brake job example: Remove stock lines and calipers after work, takes a half hour on mostbikes. If longer, split task. Next day, partial or full install. Next day, bleeding. Bang, done, no reason to procrastinate.

Time management is a thing many hobby mechanics forget but it doesn't cost a dime. They also forget efficient parts storage as wrenching effectiveness multiplier. I use cheap Plano etc clear fishing tackle boxes with movable dividers from Walmart to sort removed hardware and store new small parts. If notes are useful, I toss paper under the lid. Beats the fuck out of digging in a coffee can full of bolts.
>>
>>16222595
I have a shit load of tools at my old home, I have worked at a motorcycle mechanic shop for half a year, and I have done a lot of repairs on my own bike. It is not the skill that I'm lacking, it's just totally the time (started going to uni and I have to work) and that I don't have the means to store my tools here.
>>
>>16222568
Mitutoyo is the go-to for US professional machinists. I get mine off Ebay. Tesa are excellent too.

I suggest a cheap 20-dollar Pittsburgh from Harbor Freight for general shop use. Doesn't "feel" like my Mitutoyo or Tesa which stay in the machine shop but is fine for general measurement and surprisingly accurate. It does fractions too (a feature every caliper should have) which is handy doing Americuck things.
>>
>>16222578
I study too but owning a machine isn't marriage. Unlike women, you can sell them off or take them apart or set them on fire if they annoy you and you won't go to jail.

Buy something Japanese, reliable, Japanese, and reliable, with a long production run because aftermarket support, and reliably Japanese, then go beat the fuck out of it learning. Used and clean is fine. Modern bikes last many years and very, very few people actually wear engines out.

If you fear to drop it because money, that will subconsciously stress you.

Needs moar determination. I brought a hundred lbs of tools to Korea in two ammo cans. Bolted a Panavise base to one lid and stored the vise inside. Fixed other G.I.s cars and had rides anywhere.. Fit fine in my dorm wall locker. (My CONUS wall locker record is 1 1/2 Sportsters in parts and a stick welder in two lockers) No need for a rollaround.

We both know enough shit to skin out most motorcycles will fit in two large mechanics tool bags. It's fine not to want to, but there is rarely "can't". There is no life without tools and making shit fit is an entertaining challenge.

Plenty of those around, but Starrett is usually overpriced, not superior to Mitutoyo, and B&S are mostly legacy tools because the accumulation of millions of units doesn't really wear out. Doesn't stop me from buying good used units at auction though.

You'll find all of them in pro shops but the old brands have modern competition. Brown and Sharpe has been "Brown and Sharpe TESA" for a while and what little remains of the brand is (very nicely) manufactured in Switzerland.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_%26_Sharpe#Post-World_War_II_era

Starrett have many components mfd in Japan but assembled in CONUS.

PM always has worthwhile threads on the subject. Their metrology forum is outstanding.

It can be applied to "everything" because consumer auto is maube 20% of our meaningful emissions, and since we use gas instead of shit tier diesel, most of it is fairly easy to sequester with the appropriate investment (problem: america is ran by jews and they say they won't get anything from that investment)

What does make money? Constantly making new cars with slightly better emissions ratings while leaving big business (land and sea freight, power generation, manufacturing) relatively free to pollute as long as they pay the taxes, which are carbon-only, like marine diesel engines are cars and primarily emit carbon dioxide

Live in the UK and I'm 18.
Law requires people to ride a 125cc between the ages of 17-19.

I want a bike to commute to college which is 26 miles away. Has to be cheap and unattractive so it doesn't get nicked.

But not too ugly that I'd rather get hit by a car while riding it.

Was thinking a CG 125 (pre 2005) or a Suzuki GS125. Looking to pay no more than £400. I'd fix it up actually. If i could I'd pay £100 for a motor cycle that barely runs and just fix it up. Is that a good idea?

If you're looking for something that'll always go and won't get much attention I'd be looking at CZ's but they might be awkward to find. Second best is the CG or an Innova if you're willing to ride one.

If you don't have much experience with bikes don't buy one to fix up
Make sure you take someone with you to look at a bike too

When I was 17 I had a DT125R that I used for ragging around on that I worked on a lot but it dealt with a lot of theft attempts so I had a Vivacity scooter for getting to and from college.

I'm spending 1130 pounds on motorcycle gear including a camera. Right now the motorcycle is just to get me from A to B so I don't have to catch the bus.

The CG 125 is hella cheap. I can find one for less than 400 quid and if I'm lucky and patient I could for 200. I won't be buying one for 6 months anyway.

How to trailbrake?

Do I brake later into the corner and modulate front lever and throttle until i hit the apex?? I tried it a bit today and it didnt feel right.
>>
>>16224351
I'm also new to this and can confirm if it feels weird, you're probably doing right.
Basically, you apply brake pressure and continue braking past the point where you begin to lean into your turn.
Once you've started to lean, the more you lean, the more you ease off the brakes (trailing off, hence trailbrake). Once no brakes are left, apply throttle. Overlapping throttle and brake is difficult to begin with, so do them separately.

Basically: lean into turn, begin brake, lean more/ease off brake, throttle on, exit turn.

It feels weird because your braking compresses your front end your steering may feel heavier as a result.
>>
>>16224351
Go faster.

>Ride a R90S café racer

It was one when it came out, you'd be riding a valued classic as the maker intended.

Man if I had a shit bike that I would need to resell I would totally slam as much waifu as possible on it.

I should join the us army and buy a Mustang to have it shipped overseas
Then I'll be the cool dude for once

New bike friend here
Ive got a 200 dual sport right now which is fun on the weekends but I want something I can commute on the highway with instead of my ancient accord. How do ~400cc dirt bike engines handle on the highway? I feel like it would be screaming all the time.
Would something like a drz 400 be fine for a half hour commute five days a week?
Any suggestions for my dead ass?
>>
>>16224491
This is a horrible plan. Nothing can make you cool. Also once they found out you're a capitalist pig army grunt, you're fucked.
>>
>>16224497
A half hour commute at 70mph on a DRZ twice a day, five days a week is no beuno.

Just get an actual motorcycle. DRZ's suck balls.
>>
>>16224497
Sounds like you need a busa 2bh
>>
>>16224491
No, you should join the US Air Force and ship something interesting back from overseas. Being stationed in NATO, Korea or Japan is fun. Just don't act like a dumbfuck and forget all your preconceptions.

Your ride only makes you cool to guys. Your US passport makes you cool to sloots, but marrying them is unwise. As Sgt Cody told me long ago, "Airman Anon, PACAF is like Disneyland. Enjoy the rides. Don't try to bring one home."

You sound like the old harley twin dude I was talking to yesterday. Were you and your wife in the Airforce? How'd that work out.
>>
>>16224497
I put a bigger front sprocket and a smaller back sprocket on my crf450x and it cruises highway speeds without a problem and still gets it in the woods pretty good. The bike will do 100 mph if I put it to the pins on the road.

Sprockets mostly wear because of chain wear and stretch. Lube helps the pins and bushings in the chain thus system longevity. Excess collects sand and dirt and is to be avoided.

You can find even more on the Diamond and Renold sites if you are curious.

Suck my dick, faggot. I'm not sorry your feelings are hurt because you're worthless.

I hope the motorcycle DADDY bought you because makes you feel better about being a MANGINA. Then again, he probably bought you a fucking DRZ400 to go with your TOOLBAG lifestyle.

A DR-Z does just fine at 70mph if you gear it up for it. Even with stock gearing the bike will be fine. Above 70 they start to go out of their comfortable cruising range though.

>>16224514
False. DR-Zs could spend hours on a highway no problem.

get a road bike for the road and leave dirt bikes for the dirt

Yeah, but notice how I didn't say whether or not the bike was up to the task.

Most people aren't up to the task of sitting on a fuckin' DRZ at 70-80mph. Great town commuter, piss poor highway commuter.
