Did a list of all the shit I have to do to the GSX during the winter.

End result is a decent amount of hours but only about 350€ plus paints.

Maybe 50-100€ more for DIY hard luggage (tool cases from a hardware store).

Around 150€ more if I want to get a Koso digital gauge.

Around 150€ further for a bit more offroad-worthy tires before SEM. (Current tires could go for 10k+ more but they're a bit too slippery in the wet and absolute awful off-road.)

So in the "worst" case scenario maybe 700€.

Also new riding pants and waterproof gloves. Maybe 200€ more.

>>
>>14018498
There's a DL1000 Strom with Givi panniers all ready to go for like $6500. The salesman I've been talking to and generally shooting the shit with for a few weeks now said he's not going to run $6400 on it, considering the miles and such, plus their inventory's pretty packed new and used both. If I can get him down to 56 or 58 if the bike hasn't sold by March then that'd be sweet as fuck.

sorry you crashed, but you should start working on lines now, take this as a lesson to get better.
You were way too much on the outside of the road -where it's usually shit- for no reason at all, twice in a 30 seconds clip.
The first time because you took the wrong way to enter the hairpin, inside/outside instead of outside/inside.

Anyway, take this as experience and return to ride soon

Yeah but don't do it unless you either want to really bad or have a good reason.

My bike doesn't have a single piece of plastic that isn't broken and/or scratched and the stock exhaust is corroded to the consistency of papier-mache. Both the front and rear lights got fucked in the crash back in August, as did the passenger grab handle (which I'm replacing with the hard luggage mount).

The handlebar swap with handguards and heated grips is for ergos and comfy, I commute on the bike for 8 months a year.

Without the crash I would've only done the exhaust job and handlebar swap.

This shit ain't neither cheap nor always fun. Very rewarding in the end, though.

Heidenau K66 Silica front and Shinko E-705 rear.

Those are both 80% road / 20% offroad tires with M+S marking, which means I can ride between December 1st and March 1st when it's mandatory to have winter tires even on motorcycles in Finland.

Also they have great wet weather performance and look pretty sick, too.

Didnt i already say it would tear my gear box apart with an example of what happens when i let the clutch out a fraction of a second too soon on an up shift at 13,000 rpm?
Personally i think my bike just revs way too hard to do it and i would rather not risk destroying the gear box. Maybe if i had a bike that only revs to 9 grand sure.
>>
>>14019809
You did, but you're wrong. Watch the video, with proper technique it's smoother than using the clutch. You seem the think you're just bashing the gears through or something which isn't how clutchless shifting works.

I learnt to do it on an MC22 (shifts at 18-19k), 13k isn't "too hard".

But clutchless upshifting is what killed my ktm 250 specifically because it was a high revving engine, the 3rd gear bearing could not handle the stress of the upshift one day and it shattered sending shards of high speed steel (the bearing case) through all of the gears shredding them and then through the rest of the engine destroying nearly everything in the internals, the bike ended up becoming spare parts for other bikes.

Its not like i don't know how to do it i just don't do it anymore because that was a fucking expensive thing to do to gain a few seconds.

Kekd myself till i wrekd myself.

Tons of motorcyclists shift without the clutch with no issue. Your ktm probably naded because it was a ktm.
>>
>>14019906
I don't know how the gearbox in the KTM250 works, but if your technique is good (if the KTM250 had a full mesh box and you blew it that way--your technique isn't good), you'll have zero issues on a CB400's box. It's not like it's a "high revving" engine either. It's only going to 13,000rpm.

That and it causes less wear than using your clutch.

>>14019947
When I used to take my MC22 into the hills and was trying to keep up with bigger bikes on the straight aways I'd preload the shifter before the limiter. It'd shift up when it hit the redline. Never had any issues or any rough shifts. That was somewhere between 19,000 and 20,000rpm.

Took it all apart at the beginning of the year and the internals were all in great shape still.

if the gearbox on the cr125 engine on my gokart can handle clutch-less up and down shifting during races, there is no way it fucked your bike unless you were doing something really wrong
>>
>>14019991
from this post >>14019809 it sounds like he thinks clutchless shifting is just smashing the gear level up
>>
>>14019906
I've been clutchless shifting up and down for 10 years of riding and have never had an issue.
Get your revs right, blip the throttle and you have no problems.
>>
>>14019906
>ktm
explains it

I've put in hundreds of thousands of no clutch shifts on cr125s, hard 14k racing shifts with no fucks given, slamming up and down through the gears with high torque loads. And never once had a single issue. used the same transmission for 2 full seasons including all practice (basically all day every weekend). it's the whole point of having dog gears.

I mean there's nothing wrong with using the clutch to shift, but there's also nothing wrong with not using it.
>>
>>14020012
Not him but, I got really good at it awhile back when I was riding for work. Could clutchless up or down at pretty much any rpm or throttle amount I wanted.

Can't remember any issues at all.
>>
>>14020031
I got good at it because I was enduro riding an old KX250 with the most fucked clutch cable imaginable.
It was either go clutchless or get arm pump within 40min of riding.
>>

>>
>>14019947
The ktm thing is probably true to be honest it was a 2007 bike and they are infamous for gearbox problems.
>>14019953
I still do not see how it could be better for anything to not use the clutch, Not using the clutch risks damaging the engaging dogs, bending shifting forks and shattering bearings if you are even 200rpm out of the rev range when you shift where as using the clutch wears something that is $250 to replace after maybe 20,000km..

The only way you're going to wear anything at all is with bad technique. Clutchless upshifts are so hard to do wrong it's not even worth discussing. Downshifts? Sure, it's not for everyone.

the ones in this >>14020214 pic, mounted on the wheels. They're some shinko tires. I can't remember the number. Rear is 70/30 and front is 50/50.

I had the knobbies sitting on those wheels but was using the sport tires. I took off the knobbies and put on the ds tires. I haven't put the ds tires on the bike yet.
>>
>>14020251
long story short every time you use the clutch it wears into your engine oil whereas clutchless shifting done correctly will not cause any wear. the key is done correctly remember motorcycle gearboxes are usually full mesh and sequential though so it is not exactly hard to do right.

Is improper clutchless shifting worse than revving up and dumping the clutch?
I do both tho so I just want to know what is more damaging.

I also ride the clutch a lot because the bike is geared high and sometimes I need to keep the wheel speed down to keep traction.
>>
>>14020279
So why do motogp guy use the clutch?

Stupid boy racers up in here
>>
>>14020279
The only engines in its range making comparable power at similar RPM are 250cc 2 stroke engines lol, the only engines i can think of that rev harder are inline 4 250's and 125cc 2 strokes.
>>
>>14020345
What is shear?
>>
>>14020372
Don't worry. The boy racers know best.
>>
>>14020345
Yes the key is you need to be 100% perfect 100% of the time to do no damage and i can think of no person who is perfect that often. everyone fucks up and when you do say hello to the new hole in your wallet.
And the clutch making your oil dirty is why you change it every 2000-5000km depending on how you are riding... unless you are needing to shave 0.1 of a second off a lap time clutchless shifting is just not worth doing in my opinion.
>>
>>14020393
What if you just don't feel like it? Or your left hand is busy? You want to avoid hand fatigue?

>.01 of a second
That time is critical when doing wheelies.

Managed to ride 4-5 hours without a clutch lever on my YZ250 in 40 degree NSW summer and it was fine.

As long as you're not slamming the gear lever up or down to change gears it'll be fine.
>>
>>14020369
They don't? It's almost always an electronic quick shifter that essentially does the same thing as clutchless shifting.

>>14020372
250cc two stroke make way more power. The KR1S we had out back at work was making somewhere around 85hp.

I'm not going to give you a list, but Hondas 400cc V4s immediately comes to mind, as for revving harder there is a plethora of engines.

>>14020393
I'll make mistakes more often using my clutch than not. It's such a basic technique, getting it right as-near-to-100% as possible isn't exactly a stretch of the imagination.

I don't see why you're so convinced it'll ruin your gearbox. Countless riders have done countless clutchless upshifts over countless miles with no issues.

Yes if you hamfist your gears you'll break something, but "clutchless shifting" doesn't mean slam the shifter up like a moron.

Use the clutch ya numbnuts
>>

Never said it doesn't cause wear. But in the 10 years of clutchless shifting I've never had my gearbox explode.

Pretty sure anons KTM was just a piece of shit
>>
>>14020492
>leave clutch engaged
>shift gears
>differential speed from engine to tire not able to dissipate into freewheeling clutch
>slams gear dogs and jars transmission

>>14020504
done right they wont mangle the box but they do beat up the dogs pretty good and over time can shatter or round the dogs off till they slip out of gear.

you dont get basic mechanical principles do you?
the engine will not be spinning the right rpm for the next gear and it will overspin the slack and slam the dogs in as it dissipates the excess rpm.

Doesn't really matter when a bike is more likely to destroy valves, rings, piston, crank, and clutch far before the transmission anyway.

I might be close to getting one of them :D my dad is saying he wants $800 as well as my 450 for it seen as my bikes engine needs to be pulled apart which is reasonable i guess but i swear i can talk him down to $500
>>
>>14020586
The key difference is those are all cheap to replace by themselves, if something in the gearbox goes because most road bikes share oil between gear box and engine all of that is going to go at the same time. ggnore
>>
>>14020575
Clutchless shifting essentially works the same way as a quickshifter. The full mesh box and super light flywheel make that a non-issue. Add in that the transmission is unloaded during the shift.

Like has been said a bunch of times if you're doing it correctly the wear is nothing to even think about. There just seem to be a few people in this thread who are convinced clutchless shifting literally means slamming your foot up to change gears.

>>14020501
Quickshifter don't control the clutch. They more or less do the same thing as clutchless shifting albeit perfectly timed and using ignition.
>>
>>14020613
>people in this thread

this is 4chan m8
most of them cant revmatch or tell you what countersteering is, you think they can properly shift without a clutch?
plus how many of the people here are on bikes intended for that kind of use? most road bikes have heavy flywheels to smooth out the engine, not facilitate quick shifting
>>
>>14020594
you make it any farther on the puppy box for your bike?
>>
>>14020599
They're solid bikes man. I was surprised how much low end power there was. It can tractor through soft shit in a higher gear like 4 jokes can.

But kick it down a gear and it unleashes the fun. Also if you get it check which power valve spring it has in it. Apparently there's a mild, medium and aggressive spring.

Also
>rego in qld is like $240/year.
>Insurance even cheaper than that.

Literally no downsides
>>
>>14020554

Kek, I didn't consider that to be fair.

>plus how many of the people here are on bikes intended for that kind of use? most road bikes have heavy flywheels to smooth out the engine, not facilitate quick shifting
I've found you can generally do it on anything except a Harley with a big separate transmission.

Seriously though guys, at the very least learn how to do it. Even if you don't ever use it, that one day in twenty years when your clutch cable goes and you have to get home you'll be happy you knew how.

>>14020645

And im just going to get recreational rego on it, im only going to be riding it in the bush so no need for full rego in my opinion
>>
>>14020645
They chopped throttle. It means the engine isn't propelling the bike for a moment. It does the same thing as a quickshifter which cuts ignition for a moment.

Ah rec rego. Too bad that doesn't exist in this state otherwise I'd have it too.

used to run the gauntlet of mx bikes in the state forests. Saw a guy ride over a cliff and break his neck and unable to walk again.

Stopped riding until I had a registered bike and private health insurance.
>>
>>14020722
Yeah i always had a registered bike just so that if i crashed while out in the bush i could say i crashed on a mates property and get my medical bills covered lol, wew medicare for being dumb cunts.

You don't have to register anything if you don't want to it just helps if you crash and don't want to pay for your hospital bills lol, TAC/medicare cover your hospital stay if you have rego.
