So I've got one of these Woodland Scenics foam incline/decline kits. I've never used one before.

If I want to fasten this to a foam surface, do I need the special "foam tack" glue that they sell, or would regular wood glue work?

Glue is poo
give it a too
rive it a moo
and go to the loo
>>

Regular glue would probably work.
you might also stab a toothpick or something into both. I haven't tried it but it seems to make sense.

I've never seen that product before. I wonder if contact cement would work? Used that for cork roadbed in the past b4 using homasote.

Hot glue (lower temp ones at least) works, and I've heard good things about using silicon sealant as well. Haven't tried normal glue myself, but I suppose you could always try doing a small section as a test?

Small radius switches and straight tracks as close as possible.

Space isn't so much the issue, it's how to actually connect it to the main.

So, gentleme/n/, at what dimensions do you begin to consider a table to be 'not tight' for HO scale?
>>
>>1058825
Depends on what stock you're running really, a single car DMU can look perfectly at home on a well made 4x8, or even smaller.
>>
>>1055056
I have this saved, never thought it would be relevant.
>>
>>1058832
I wouldn't put HO on an 8x4 tbqh, I think you can get more efficient use of space by employing a shelf type layout.

There's a model railroad club in my area.
They have a large setup in an old train station that takes up the whole room.
The tracks by the building are still in use, so the whole building shakes when a freight train goes by.

>>
>>1058825
pretty much any HO curve is too tight, unless you're going across a room in a big loop. Better to terminate it into a tunnel or sky-box and hide the sharp corners in the fiddle.
>>
>>1058825

The primary curve here is right around a 12in radius. Depending on the engine it can have issues. I have some engines from the 60s with the couplers on the wheel set, they can do it fine regardless of it being a 4 or 6 set.

If you have engines with the coupler attached to the frame, for a 4 wheel axle set I would not go less than 15, if using steam engines you want 20+.

>>
>>1065064

Life. Taxes hit me hard, got made lead on multiple areas of our city governments new software implementation (no time), and getting more autistic about proper scales.

In next few months I should start doing stuff again. Considering going full retard and doing outdoor n-gauge shinkansen and amtrak. Mix it in with my idea for giant bugs and megaflora. I have a sequoia in my yard, planting some sakuras, and going to put in a small pond feature.

Or ill just blow all that money on amtrak rides, dunno yet.

That sounds about average. Personally, I only have approx CAD$2000 invested that's spread out over about 25 years. 80% of that in the past 6 yrs. I didn't have to spend hardly anything in the early days because exactly 30 years ago I had a roommate who got into model trains around 1980. He had a ~huge~ collection of locomotives and rolling stock that I could pick from & access to a 2,000 sq/ft club layout.

In 1992 I helped him catalog all his brass ho scale Canadian Pacific steam locomotives for insurance purposes. He had a representative model for EACH and EVERY class of steam locomotive the CPR ever had. I can't remember how many there was (guessing 80+ models) but I do know we were both stunned to calculate he had spent over CAD$80,000 on just the brass alone. He had another 150 or so plastic diesels (most kitbashed & superdetailed) & countless freight cars. He got into G-scale in '89.

I wish I had pics of our apartment. We were tripping over trains! Shelves everywhere crammed with Athearn boxes, train books, etc. Big builders photos of CPR 2-10-4 Selkirks everywhere. Our dining area in our apt was our modelling area. Had a vented paint booth, airbrush, dremel, work desk, etc. We had a gold carpet, so detailed parts often got lost in it. Every few months we'd put a fresh bag in the vacuum cleaner & vacuum that area only. We'd hear dozens of detail parts getting sucked up. Afterwards we'd pull the bag open & recover those little pieces. lol!

So don't feel bad. (sorry for the long post, got a bit nostalgic).

For me: a way to preserve a narrow slice of time, location, and style of operations that contain my favourite locomotive operating on my favourite subdivision of my favourite railway, as accurately as possible.

I like mountain railroading, long slow slogs up & down grades with minimal switching but lots of supporting physical plant like steel bridges, wooden trestles, tunnels, telegraph lines, etc. Mostly I enjoy building it all.

I think I've been pretty frugal so far, but it's an expensive hobby...

Let's see here...

I've probably spent about...

$50 on paints + brushes
$250 on basswood
$200 on scenery details
$150 on 3D Printed stuff
$125 on Tomix chassis'
$50 on stuff it turns out I can't actually use
$25 for a transformer
$200 worth of trains this month
$265 worth of engines and rolling stock prior to that... I've been working on this one for a while, so really I was pretty good about not spending much on actual engines and cars right up until this month
~$20 worth of glue
~$50 worth of tools just to get started
~$25 on engine maintenance stuff
$100 on building facing stuff
$30 for windows
About $200 for track

So... So far I'd estimate that I've spent somewhere between $1740 and $2000 on this, since I probably forgot something somewhere along the line. I've been pretty frugal up until this month by just trying to focus on scenery and only buying trains when I find a deal that's too good to pass up. So before this month my fleet consisted of... 1 car that I scratch-built, 1 boxcar, 1 caboose, 1 Dash-9, 1 steam engine, 3 Jackson Sharp Excursion cars, and 5 3D-printed shells on Tomix chassis. So I had 6 cars, 3 engines, and 5 powered commuter rail cars; 14 total.

This month I've bought 3 tank cars, 6 box cars, and 2 engines, so I've almost doubled the size of my fleet this month. It's expensive.

At this point I have about 4 and a half square feet of layout I'm actively working on, and of that, a section about about 0.5 feet by 2 feet is more or less complete, and the rest is about a quarter of the way done maybe? You could use those figures to say that layouts cost about $1000 per square foot, but it's probably not quite that bad because this particular layout is... Probably much more expensive per square foot than normal layouts, and because I've bought more trains than I'm actually able to use at the moment.
>>
>>1066533
Kind of both? I study history, I like trains, and I like seeing toy trains run around in a loop, but most of all I just like to make nice looking things. It brings me a sort of satisfaction that just sitting on the couch watching TV doesn't.

>>1068153
To clarify also, I'm doing N scale stuff, and I started on November 14, 2016. So I suppose I've spent somewhere around $1740-$2000 on this in about 6 months... Maybe I have enough trains for the time being...
>>
>>1067917
Very nice. I got my BR Lined D16 a couple years ago, I can't help but love how these locos look. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to run it (constantly moving house, not having a layout etc) but I've read good things about them.
>>
>>1068154
Why does N-scale cost more than HO?
>>
>>1068406
Depends on where you're trying to model. In the US and Europe, HO is the predominate scale and is there for the cheapest, as it sells the most volume. In Asia, N is much more popular and thus is much cheaper, sometimes extremely more so. I spent less on a N scale 16 car shinkansen set than I did on my last HO Loco, although plenty of exceptions do occur. Just look at kato japan, USA, and Europe prices, the models aren't that much different in terms of quality or detail, yet the difference in price is crazy.
>>
>>1068406
N scale is cheaper if buying from discount retailers and ebay.

Most bare-bones (non-DCC) HO scale locomotives by companies like Athearn and Atlas cost about $100 new, and that's with a discount. By comparison, most new N scale locomotives by those same companies will retail at $75-80. Rolling stock prices are comparable across scales but even then HO seems cheaper overall.

Depends on the country. Here in the UK N-gauge definitely cheaper than OO, I don't think I've ever seen any comparative product more expensive in N apart from one-off or crowdfunded ones.

Neat, is that the Kato GS4 that was just released?

I have a couple of those WP F3s myself, except I modified the lettering on the A units to a later version to fit with the late 1960s-eearly 1970s era I model. Also I have them pull freight rather than passenger trains.

I don't have a lot of space so F units and 40' boxcars are ideal consists. Long passenger cars require too large of a radius to operate in my current situation.
>>
>>1072371
Its actually the first release, with all the problems those had. After I hardwired in the decoder, it runs much better . Still throws traction tires every once in a while though. 12ft to the corner, 5ft out. Will continue down the other wall another 8ft or so once done. Can set my desktop and monitors up in the corner and have a spot for papers/desktop maint next to it. Will do a raised loop that ties in with what I already built. Got this far on excess wood from shed with exception to 3/4 birch plywood for corner.

Here is general design. I have enough track for it. Pain is going to be getting the raise/lower right. Since I will be operating shorter trains (8-15 short hoppers) that will be going between the inglenook and time saver puzzles I can do pretty steep grades. The family lines switcher handles 8 hoppers with ease at 5%.

Curves on upper rail will be 19/20 so should be able to handle a big boy assuming its not going too fast. Just realized that means I will need to bump out the width on the other table arm to 40, will see if I can pull that off.
>>
Anyone got any tips on making a track plan?

hi guys

I have one of these http://www.lionel.com/products/southern-diesel-freight-conv-gp38-2730-6-31938/

in ok condition. I got it many years ago when I was much younger... How much is it worth? I see the engine by itself go for like 70$ on eBay.

Oh, and it has some extra track.

thanks a bunch;

Anyone here gone full autism and started making their own tracks? I use code 100 nickel silver but it seems like they only make straight switches.

I have a switch from the 70s/80s that is curved code 100 that would worked, but worried about building it in and having the switch motor fry and trying to find a replacement. Should I make my own switch or modify the layout to be straight, or throw caution to the wind with an old switch?

A quick google seems to show plenty of code 100 curved turnouts, but if you think making your own would be easier....

The rise is 19" radius and the raised level is 20/21" radius, I thought that was large enough for most locos?

Considering doing a loop around the monitors and calling it good for the HO track, then doing an N layout on the other side.
>>
>>1075773
>..full autism and start making their own tracks?
Yeah, I used to hand-lay ties & rail for a 2,000 sq.ft model train club in Alberta in the 1980's. I rather enjoyed it.. It's practically an art form. Almost no other members liked, or wanted, to do it.. just 2 of us. Usually 2 of us came down between club nights (wednesdays), cranked some classic rock, and worked on expanding the track layout for a few hours in the evenings from 6-9 pm.

We used a Kadee spiker for the rails and had a good method perfected where we could keep the rails straight and centered. We super-elevated curves when appropriate and used a graduated easement method to make them look natural & realistic.

We had to hand spike the scratchbuilt switches. That was time consuming but I averaged approx 10 hours per switch, from gluing the switchtie template down to switch completion. They looked and functioned better than the commercially available switches back in the day. It was also cheaper too.

I enjoy watching yours (& others) progress. I'm about to do my very first "layout" consisting of a pair of 5' x 2' modules portraying a diesel servicing facility and a few yard tracks. It's not much but then I don't have much space but still better than nothing.

btw, wish I had that much space. There'd be at least one track looping all the way around.

>>
>>1077044
Nah keep with the HO layout all the way round, think that would look pretty impressive desu. Would you do it as a mixed gauge layout if you were gonna do anything N gauge though? Or just have 2 separate layouts?
>>
>>1077143
I will probably just do a very raised loop for N, only have an amtrak loco + cars and a shinkansen that I want to run.

Unsure how I will pull it off yet. The desk is only 29" wide which is too small for that steam to turn around. So I will need to have it come out to at least 40. That makes my room more tight than comfort but no real choice.

I have not googled this yet but going to start a conversation on switchboard designs. I am interested in using some of those metal two-position toggle switches but unsure how to go about it.

Electrical is something I have little experience with. I have a feeling that toggle switches would give a constant input, wouldnt that fry out the switches (fried one when my kid held it down)?

Any kek pictures of switch layout?
>>
>>1077255
If you're worried about solenoid/coil switches getting fried, you may want to use capacitor discharge circuits to control them.
>>
>>1077255
go check out /diy/
They have general threads related to that as well as "questions that don't deserve their own thread" threads
>>
>>1077255
Pic was the switchboard from my grandfathers track. Was around 10 x 10 in the same room as mine is in.

One summer I stayed at college instead of coming home. My aunt and uncle wanted to store more crap upstairs. They threw anything not bolted down or what could be broken off into boxes (including locos) and cut the layout up and threw it away.

>>1077255
I will wait until I have all the layout done I think, then I will build a switchboard.

>>1077551
I'm truly sorry to hear that. It boils my blood. How can people be so incompetent?
>>
After lurking here for awhile I'm thinking of starting an N scale layout since I only have "25x44" would. I plan on using sectional tracks with roadbeds since I plan to move put soon. Sooo
1) should I go with kato unitrack? It seems to have really good reviews.
2) should i start off with "9.75" or "11" radius.
3) what can I get away with running on those radius curves? I don't mind starting small, like gp38 or sw1500 small, but could I also use those radius curves for some amtrack california locomotives and rolling stock?
>>
>>1077808

Here is an amtrak loco and 10 cars doing a 12" radius oval. At full speed there were no derailments.

Biggest issue id say is that it doesnt look very good.
>>
>>1077855

16 car shinkansen does not explode in fiery doom at full speed on 12" radius. Does look like garbage though
>>
>>1077808
Unitrack is a good choice, especially for temporary layouts when you're not going to be living somewhere for more than a few years, or if you have limited space. If you plan to do temporary set up then http://www.katomodels.com/unitrackplan/ is a great resource for plans and ideas. I've even seen some great permanent layouts using the track and plans.
>>
>>1077255
Those single-throw (2 position switches) will damage solenoid type switch machines for the very reason you suspect & complicate the wiring unnecessarily (you'd need 2 per switch). They should work on the tortoise switches okay as I think they have built in circuitry that disconnects the power when the switch points complete their movement.

You could use a double-throw (up-off-down) 3 position switche but you would need to toggle it quickly and return it to center-off. Ideally you can use a momentary double-throw which will return to center (Off) upon relessing the switch. The club I used to belong to used these with their solenoid type switches.

Another method would be to use a pair of momentary push buttons. Push one button to throw the switch one way, the other vice versa. Just make sure they are Normally Open types.
>>
>>1077858
Top kek, that thing almost completes a circle.

Monitors in with three way HDMI switch for desktop/work latitude/personal thinkpad. Latitude dock shelf installed, waiting on hdmi to dvi cords for thinkpad to come in tomorrow and will install that. Got the upper rail installed past the monitor stand. Need to work in two more monitors for my XP boxes and wife's computer.

Evidently the 2-8-8-2 can handle the 12in radius corners on my inglenook, found this interesting. On lower level will go past monitors as well. Going to do a siding for a breakdown car, make a stack of rail from old broken pieces and cut some ties to put in stack, have some old broken metal wheels as well.

Wife told me to bansai a maple tree or two to put in the open area between puzzle and the rise. Going to try to do a log camp type thing and get a crane kit. Need to finish the walls with some clear glue and some greenery. Think I need to work in a storage barn for the 2-8-8-2 so if anyone has ideas that will be cool.

Kids were playing with switcher + ore cars + caboose and flipped a switch while I was gluing something. Whole rig except for switcher fell off the edge of earth. Only damage was a coupler and my sanity.

Now that desk is together been using it to watch anime instead. I need to build some shelves to store my trains/random crap on the desk so I can finish the remainder.

Trying to decide how far I want to go before doing the turn. Going to build a test turn with a 15" radius and see how the 2-8-8-2 handles it. Space is limited down that direction. If I can do a 15" the table only needs to come out another inch.

Still think I want to do some sort of timesaver/spacesaver at the other end. Need to map it all out to make sure the electric directions are all good. When all switches are in i'll buy the correct sized dcc.

They are pretty pricey, but when you consider $400 is the average price for one shitty 3-rail O scale locomotive it doesn't seem as bad a deal, relatively speaking. Get out a caliper, and measure the distance between the rails. It looks like both the entrance, and 1/2 way through the distance changes.

Shit tier garbage. Couplers are all over the place with no consistancy across the seven cars. I !cut off the kaydee! bits because I dont care and they were catching. That made them able to roll over the track mostly fine but they still just derail for no reason. In addition the couplers have tons of up/down travel and unhook themselves on any gradient change, I dont have any other rolling stock that does this. Trucks like to random derail in places I have never had trouble for.

Going to hobby shop to see if they have any ideas, if not going to replace with non broken couplers and return.
>>
>>1088315
So I think the plan is going to be cutting the coupler arm off of the wheel sets and body mounting it. There is too much sway between the wheel sets movement and the couplers movement. This will tighten it up and assure it stays level.

I am also considering linking all of the cars together into one unit. Unsure about how to do that and if there is an easier way. Some sort of possible kit providing me the links? Dunno.

Bogie mounted couplings are shit. I'd consider chopping of the entire arm from the bogie and then mounting a Kadee draught box right there on the body between the steps.

Also check the wheel back-to-backs.

All thats left to go is some sort of station building as far as this part is concerned. Went with an open roof due to it being a steam engine and all. It kind of has that japanese country station styling.

Anon living in Japan atm, over the past few months I've gotten more into trains here. Is there a guide for model trains in Japan? If not is there a normal general guide for model trains?

Oh fuck...

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/448515/alex-batey-rip

>Yep, Alex loved to share his passions. The beautiful model trains and buses he saved for were delivered to NR, and after opening them with care he showed them off, tossing in a gratis lecture on why this 1932 Whatchamacallit Steam Engine was more accurate than his 1947 HolySmokes Diesel. His home basement was turned over to this hobby, wall to wall, and he took countless pictures and videos of his beloved layouts.

RIP Ithaqua AKA Alex Batey. Who the fuck would have guessed that he worked at the National Review?

Also, does this mean Ithaqua knew Armond White?

I'm a sucker for life like coaches. As in, the 60 foot light up ones.

I have more rolling stock than engines, but somehow I still want more rolling stock. The reason for pic related was: if life-like had a showroom using their base model stuff, how good or bad would it be.
I'm still looking for more coaches of life like or precursor companies (Penn line baggage car, Varney baggage car, or coaches in santa Fe from any of those three) the thought of a train of 14 of those coaches being hauled by only one of those pancake diesels... Oof.
>>
>>1091882
Just get an N scale Kato Zephyr or Super Chief set. I think you can get them new for a couple hundred bucks.
>>
>>1091884
This is HO. I'm more of a collector than actually able to run (if you cant see by the snaptrack)
The only time I might splurge is if I do the thing I always wanted, a 360 degree camera inside of a dome car, and I want to be actually able to see out the windows.

Another thing Im working on is collecting the 38+ known variations on the life like 40 foot boxcar.

Any of the real budget hornby railroad tanks decent at slow running?
>>
>>1092618
Depends in my experience, I've generally found 0-6-0 railroad stuff to run pretty well at most speeds, more stable at slow running. 0-4-0's are very temperamental though, there seems to be only 3 settings with them; stationary, snails pace & fast. What ya looking at buying?
>>
>>1092619
Not sure. There was this somewhat caricaturish light railway in the Hornby mag layout showcase special that I could do with what I have.
>>
>>1092784
I have the idea that I could do a Col Stephens Light Railway caricature with decent modelling.

Any suggestions for resources or stock are welcome.

A train club I once belonged to used to have the passenger cars of their show train (a train that ran a preset loop on automatic whenever a visitor pushed the button) permanently coupled. Not sure what brand but they were replicas of the real thing. It was their solution to an irritating issue of coming back the next day to find the diesels pushing some of the passenger cars. :-/

Btw, did you add some weight to the cars? We had to bring them up to NMRA weight standards. It helped dampen vibrations which were causing derailments/uncouplings. We also had a coupler height gauge and I often had to put thin little washers between the chasis and the trucks to bring them up to uniform height. Surprising how much variance there was in those mass-produced Athearn models from the 80's.
>>
>>1088407
Ach! I meant to add that cutting those coupler extensions & going to a chasis mounted coupler should be a good move. Truck mounted coupler arms greatly exagerate the slightest movements of the truck, as you mentioned they go all overvthe place. Only negative part is you can lose out on the ability to run a tighter turning radius.

Help me, /n/ you are my only hope. I just feel so uninspired, I have a decent collection of HO models and definitely the space to Create a layout and the time and the money. The best way to phrase it is I just don't know where to begin or I am not sure what I want.

Show me how you started or what got you really into what you wanted to do for your layout

what do you like most in (model) railroding? Switching? Prototypical operation? Running long trains? Building structures or landscape? A specific location? Imagining what-ifs? Photography? History?

For general inspiration I'd say just look around. Read magazines; MRH is a free webzine, MR Planning and MR Great Model Railroads usually have some good stuff. Read forums and look around on the web, go to exhibitions, and try to visit some local operation groups.

>>
>>1091820
This kind of happened to me, especially after visiting the Kyoto railway museum. I kind of want to get in to this, but have no idea where to start and I would need to move into a place with more space anyways.
>>
>>1092906
This is very helpful. https://www.scarm.info/index.php

I'd start with drafting some layout ideas based on the space you have. There's also plenty of videos on youtube that go over scenery etc. What sorta thing you wana model?
>>
Where would you recommend starting for someone who has been out of the hobby for years and no longer has access to the HO trains from their youth? Even if I was able to find them (packed away somewhere after a big move, maybe even thrown out or sold), I think N is better for my space situation, or even Z. Am I getting ripped off by buying sets? Should I just get used packs or individual locos and rolling stock online?

My interests are American railroading in the post steam era (so we're talking the 60s on), especially in the Northeast Corridor area and Chicagoland. Modeling transit (like trolleys, subways, and such) or JR might be fun too.
>>
I've taken the plunge. Kato M1 loop, kato JR Kyushu seaside liner 2 car set, and kato JR Kyushu series 787.
>>
>>1093090
If you can hack the funny behaviours i'd join a club to learn the ins-and-outs of everything from current models, technology (DCC), and layout building ideas. Once you got that go solo if you want.

Is there any North American Z-gauge models? The 2 z-scalers I ever met were modelling German lines.

I don't have the desire to super detail boxcars on a large scale and since i'm not going to pay $30/boxcar for high detailed ones, i'm ok with buying cheap $5 Athearn bluebox used models at shows. Maybe i'll upgrade but until then i'll have a fleet to play with.
>>
>>1093018
Japan is truly a land of trains. After travelling across Japan my interest level towards trains has increased considerably. Do desuka den.
>>
>>1095038

Can you just join without having any equipment of your own? I feel like that's not uncommon, but I'm not sure what the clubs are like. My guess is a lot of the members are older and have there own stuff to run on club layouts.

Micro-Trains makes a lot of North American N and Z-scale models, as does a company called American Z Lines. The prices are a little higher than I expected. I guess the price reduction as you go smaller doesn't hold at a certain point. Japanese Z scale stuff from Rokuhan seems more affordable.
>>
>>1095171
Sure, I joined one as a junior member at age 16, there was only 4 of us that young in the club at the time (1985). I didn't own a single train or rolling stock for almost a year as there was plenty on the HO club layout to use. Some members would bring their own stuff down from time to time.

I didn't know what I wanted to model for the longest time so I watched others & asked questions & read books until I found something that interested me & no one else modelled.

The club I belonged to from 1985 - 1988 had an age spread from 30's up to late 70's with an avg median of around 40.. so not too bad. I don't mind older as many of them usually have a wealth of info that I mined for my own purposes.

I hung out every weekend & every wednesday night (usual club night) for about a month before I committed myself to the $24/yr membership. They pressured me to join the whole time. I wasn't sure what they were like at first but after a while I realized they were okay, tolerant, & supportive. I got what I needed out of the club & by age 20 my interests shifted to more *cough* important things that crop up at that point in Life (girls, parties, clubs etc) but I still checked out the annual shows, visited the club from time to time, & monthly visits to the hobby store.

Good to know about the N & Z scale manufacturers. I'm admittedly ignorant about all that. And from what i've seen with N-scale, it's come a long way from their clunky looks & terrible speed control in the 80s. I call it the "scenery scale" as it offers so much more of that than HO typically does.

Is there a better brand than woodland scenics out there, or is it just the best? What do you use?
>>

"Better" is subjective; Woodland Scenics certainly have a very large range, and their stuff is generally good quality, so they're certainly one of the best right now.

Anyone follow the model train convention going on right now? Pretty disappointing, Atlas' highly speculated on brand new N scale locomotive ended up being a lame GP39-2. Was hoping for an ALCO C636 or C425 or something more relevant to most people's modeling interests.

I wish someone would do an H20-44 in HO scale along the lines of quality of the LifeLike P1K C-Liners. I'd buy a pair.

Congrats, looks good.

HO desk project put on hold because my kids took and hid the power unit and they are too young (2.5) to figure out where they hid it. Additionally might be moving so would have to figure out how to move the set. Currently living with and caretaking my alzheimers grandma and my wife cant take it anymore, will either get to buy house and turn full room upstairs into trains or need to somehow move it.
